Short answer: Instagram’s Save Audio button does not download an MP3 or M4A to your phone. It bookmarks the sound inside Instagram for use in a future Reel. To create a standalone audio file, you need an accessible Reel video, a screen recording, or an authorized download, followed by an audio-extraction step.
Save Audio is not Download Audio. Instagram does not offer a universal native control that exports any Reel’s soundtrack as an MP3. Also, a Reel downloaded through Instagram may be silent when it uses music from Instagram’s licensed library.
This guide reflects the available Instagram workflows as of August 9, 2026, including methods for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

“Download Instagram Reel audio” can mean four different things. Choosing the wrong option is the main reason people end up with a saved bookmark instead of an audio file.

The audio may be a licensed song, original voiceover, self-recorded music, sound effect, remix, or a combination of voice and music. The type matters both technically and legally.
Identify the type of Reel audio
Instagram distinguishes between original audio and licensed audio. According to Instagram’s audio guidance, original audio can be recorded in Instagram, uploaded with a video, or supplied by another creator. Licensed audio includes music, film and television audio, and sound effects from Instagram’s library.
- Original audio: A creator’s spoken explanation, voiceover, interview, original song, or other self-created recording. It is more likely to remain in an official Reel download.
- Licensed audio: A song or other sound supplied under Instagram’s music agreements. It may play normally inside Instagram but be removed from a downloaded copy.
- Mixed audio: Voice, music, and sound effects combined into one Reel soundtrack. Ordinary extraction produces the combined track; it does not automatically separate the speaker from the background song.
- Muted or unavailable audio: If Instagram no longer serves the soundtrack because of a rights change, regional restriction, deletion, or moderation action, a downloader cannot recover audio that is no longer available from the source.
Tap the displayed audio name at the bottom of a Reel when you want to inspect its audio page. If there is no normal audio page, the Reel may use unrecognized, unavailable, restricted, or mixed audio—or the app interface may have changed.

Use this method when your goal is to reuse a sound in another Instagram Reel. It does not create an audio file in Photos, Gallery, Files, or Downloads.
- Open the Instagram mobile app and locate the Reel.
- Tap the displayed audio name at the bottom of the Reel.
- On the audio page, tap Save Audio.
- To start creating immediately, tap Use Audio when that option is available.
- To find it later, open the Reel creation screen, tap the audio or music control, and browse the Saved audio section.
Labels and locations can vary by app version, account type, country, and the kind of audio used. Not every Reel has a usable audio page or displays Save Audio. Meta describes saving trending audio for later Reel creation in its Reels feature announcement; current coverage also confirms that saved audio remains inside Instagram rather than becoming a local MP3.
Do not confuse Save Audio with the regular Save bookmark. The regular Save stores the Reel in your Instagram Saved collection. Save Audio stores the sound for Instagram creation. Neither option downloads a media file.
Download a public Reel officially
If you want a local copy of the video first, use Instagram’s native download option. The dependable official path is in the mobile app:

- Tap Share.
- Tap Download, if it is shown.
- Save the resulting video to Photos, Gallery, or the device’s media library.
Instagram’s normal public-download path is affected by the account’s privacy settings, the creator’s download setting, the Reel’s eligibility, regional availability, and whether the post is still accessible. Public Reels may be downloadable unless the creator disables downloads. Private-account Reels cannot be downloaded through the ordinary public-download path. Instagram describes this feature as available on mobile devices in its Reel-download help page.
If Download is missing, the likely explanations are:
- The account is private or you do not have the required access.
- The creator has disabled Reel downloads.
- The Reel or account is not eligible for the feature.
- The feature is not available for your account, app version, or region.
- The Reel was deleted, restricted, muted, or otherwise made unavailable.
An official download may include Instagram branding, the creator’s username, or audio attribution. More importantly, it is a video, not an audio-only file. You must extract the soundtrack separately if you need MP3, M4A, or WAV.

Expect possible silence. A Reel that uses music from Instagram’s licensed library may download as a silent video because Meta’s permission to provide that track is limited to playback within its platform. Original audio is more likely to remain, but this is not an absolute guarantee.
Extract audio from the downloaded Reel
Once you have a Reel video, extraction copies or converts the audio stream into an audio-only file. Extraction does not restore missing music, improve the source quality, or separate a song from a voiceover.
iPhone or iPad
First save the Reel video to Photos or Files. Then use either a reputable video editor or an Apple Shortcuts workflow that supports media encoding.
- Open the video in Photos or Files and confirm that it actually has sound.
- In Shortcuts, create or use a shortcut that accepts a video from the Share Sheet.
- Add Apple’s Encode Media action and enable its Audio Only option. The exact action names can vary between iOS versions.
- Add Save File and choose a location such as iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
- Run the shortcut from the video’s Share menu.
- Choose M4A, MP3, or another format supported by the shortcut or editor, then trim unwanted silence if necessary.
M4A or AAC is often a practical choice when the source already uses a compatible compressed audio stream. Choosing MP3 may require re-encoding. Keep the original video as a backup, because converting it again will not recover quality that was lost during Instagram’s processing.
Android
- Save the Reel video to your device.
- Open it in a reputable editor or audio-extraction app.
- Choose Extract Audio, Audio Only, or an equivalent option.
- Choose M4A, AAC, MP3, or another supported output format.
- Export the file and check the app’s export folder, Downloads, or Music folder.
Android menus vary by manufacturer and app. Review an extraction app’s permissions before installing it. A simple audio converter should not need your Instagram password, contacts, device-management access, or an unrelated profile or APK.
Do not simply rename reel.mp4 to reel.mp3. Renaming changes the filename extension; it does not convert the media container or audio codec. The result may fail to play or remain an MP4 file with a misleading name.
Windows, macOS, or Linux with FFmpeg
Technically capable users can extract the soundtrack locally with FFmpeg. With a compatible source audio stream, this copies the audio without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i reel.mp4 -vn -c:a copy reel.m4aIf direct copying is unsuitable or you specifically need MP3, re-encode it:
ffmpeg -i reel.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 reel.mp3Here is what the important options do:
-i reel.mp4selects the input video.-vntells FFmpeg not to include video in the output.-c:a copycopies the existing audio stream without re-encoding when the selected container supports it.libmp3lameencodes the output as MP3.-q:a 2requests high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 encoding; it cannot improve the original source.
If you need WAV for editing, you can use a PCM output such as:
ffmpeg -i reel.mp4 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le reel.wavWAV is larger and does not make a compressed Reel soundtrack higher quality. It is useful when an editor specifically requires an uncompressed working file.

Optional: yt-dlp for repeat workflows
For users who understand command-line tools, the documented yt-dlp audio-extraction pattern is:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 'https://www.instagram.com/reel/REEL_ID/'yt-dlp documents -x and --extract-audio and requires FFmpeg and FFprobe for post-processing. Instagram extraction can fail because of login requirements, rate limits, cookies, anti-bot controls, or changes to Instagram’s delivery system. Consult the yt-dlp documentation and FAQ for current behavior.
Never paste your Instagram password into an untrusted downloader or script. Do not use a command-line tool to bypass a private account, access control, or content you are not authorized to obtain.
Use a browser-based Reel downloader carefully
Third-party websites may accept a public Reel link and return a video or audio file. They are not an official Instagram export feature, and no particular service should be treated as permanently reliable: Instagram changes can break them, and sites can change their advertising, privacy, or permission practices.
- In Instagram, tap Share and choose Copy Link.
- Open a downloader in a browser and paste the public Reel URL.
- Choose video or audio output if the site offers both.
- Preview the result before saving it.
- Scan the downloaded file and close misleading pop-ups.
These services generally work only when the Reel is publicly accessible. A private, deleted, region-restricted, or login-gated Reel may fail. Do not install an offered browser extension, profile, app, or APK merely to obtain one file, and do not grant notification, contacts, photo-library, or device-management permissions without a clear reason.
Examples of sites that describe this type of workflow include SnapDownloader, ReelTools, and StoriesIG. These links are examples of a category, not an endorsement or guarantee that a particular site will work at the time you read this.
A downloaded MP3 from one of these services is the audio available in the Reel—not necessarily the original studio master. “No watermark” also says nothing about copyright permission.

Screen-record a Reel when Download is unavailable
Screen recording is a fallback, not a way to bypass privacy or rights controls. Use it only when you are permitted to retain the audio or need a personal accessibility or reference copy. It captures whatever the device is allowed to play, and you still need to extract the recorded video’s audio afterward.
iPhone
- Open Settings → Control Center and add Screen Recording if it is not already available.
- Open the Reel and prepare it to play from the beginning.
- Open Control Center and tap the Screen Recording button.
- Wait through the countdown, return to the Reel, and play it once.
- Stop recording from the red status control or Control Center.
- Find the recording in Photos and trim the beginning and end.
- Extract its audio with a Shortcuts workflow or editor.
Apple says screen recordings are saved to Photos but warns that some apps may not allow audio or video recording. A successful-looking recording can therefore contain no usable soundtrack. Apple’s current instructions are in Take a screen recording on iPhone.
Android
- Swipe down twice to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Screen record. If it is missing, use the Quick Settings edit control or consult your manufacturer’s instructions.
- Choose whether to capture device audio, microphone audio, or both. On some devices you can record a single app or the entire screen.
- Start recording, play the Reel once, and stop from the notification or status control.
- Open the recording in Photos or the device’s video folder.
- Trim it and extract the audio with an editor or converter.
Android audio controls differ by manufacturer and operating-system version. Google’s Pixel instructions explain the choices for device audio, microphone audio, both, and app-versus-screen capture in its screen-recording guide. Google also documents the broader Android workflow in Android Help.

Download audio from your own Reel
For content you created, first-party recovery is safer and usually produces a better result than a third-party downloader.

Before posting
Keep the original camera video, voiceover, music source, and editing-project file. Instagram allows creators to save a Reel to the camera roll from the editing screen, but its help documentation says that music added from Instagram’s music library is not saved when a draft is downloaded to the camera roll.
A reliable creator workflow is:
- Record and keep the original camera files.
- Record or export the voiceover separately.
- Keep any music source and license information with the project.
- Export a clean master before uploading.
- Add Instagram’s licensed music only at the final publishing stage when appropriate.
- Save the project and source audio in cloud storage or another backup location.
This prevents a licensed Instagram track from being mistaken for part of your own downloadable master.
After posting: export your Instagram information
If the original files are gone, use Instagram’s account export for your own content:
- Open Instagram and go to Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Select Your information and permissions.
- Choose Export your information.
- Select the Instagram profile.
- Choose Create export.
- Select the media or information categories you need.
- Choose the media quality and date range.
- Start the export.
- When it is ready, download it from Available downloads.
Meta says the export link may take up to 30 days to arrive and remains available for four days once ready. See Instagram’s information-export instructions for the current interface. This is a backup method for your own Instagram information, not a way to download another person’s Reel.

Why does the downloaded Reel have no sound?

Meta’s audio guidance notes that licensed audio can later be muted when music-rights agreements change. TechCrunch also reported that official downloads of Reels using licensed audio may omit the sound, while original audio is more likely to be retained.
What extraction can—and cannot—do
- It can: remove the video stream and save the soundtrack as M4A, MP3, WAV, or another supported format.
- It cannot: restore audio removed by Instagram, retrieve a deleted Reel, or bypass a private account.
- It usually cannot: separate a creator’s speech from background music. The extracted file is normally the final mixed soundtrack.
- It does not: produce the original studio-quality master. Instagram may already have compressed, normalized, or otherwise processed the audio.
- It does not change ownership: converting a video to MP3 does not grant permission to repost, monetize, distribute, or use the audio in another service.
Is downloading Reel audio legal?
Public availability is not the same as permission. Downloading a Reel does not transfer copyright ownership or grant permission to repost the video, publish its audio elsewhere, monetize it, or use it in advertising.
Instagram’s Terms of Use prohibit intellectual-property violations, and Meta’s Music Guidelines explain that unauthorized music may be muted, blocked, or removed. A license that lets a song play inside Instagram does not necessarily let you export it to TikTok, YouTube, a podcast, an advertisement, or a client project.
For U.S. users, the Copyright Office explains that downloading copyrighted material without authorization can implicate the owner’s reproduction or distribution rights. Fair use is fact-specific; there is no automatic “30-second,” “10 percent,” or “personal-use” rule that makes a download lawful. Laws differ outside the United States, so obtain local legal advice for a significant or commercial use.
If the audio belongs to someone else, the safest choices are to ask the creator for the original file or written permission, use the sound only through Instagram’s own reuse tools where appropriate, or obtain the music from an authorized service.

Business, branded, and commercial use
Do not assume that a song available in the Instagram music picker is cleared for a business Reel, advertisement, sponsored post, monetized video, or use on another platform. Meta says its licensed music library is intended for personal, non-commercial use, and availability varies by region and business account. For commercial work, use one of these routes:
- Music the business has directly licensed for the exact platforms, territory, duration, and campaign.
- Meta Sound Collection content when its current terms cover the intended Meta use. Meta says Sound Collection includes more than 14,000 songs and sounds and can support commercial uses such as ads, but check the current license scope before using a track elsewhere.
- A commercial music provider whose license explicitly covers Instagram and the campaign’s planned use.
- Original audio supplied by the creator with clear written permission and any required underlying music rights.
Safer alternatives to extracting someone else’s audio
- Use Save Audio if you only need the sound inside Instagram.
- Ask the creator for the original voiceover, music, or clean master.
- Buy or download a song through an authorized music service for permitted personal listening or editing use.
- Use Meta Sound Collection or another commercially licensed library for business content.
- Keep written permission, license receipts, attribution requirements, and usage limits with the project.
The official Download button is a convenience feature, not a blanket license to reuse the creator’s work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download only the audio from an Instagram Reel without the video?
Not through a universal native Instagram MP3 button. Save Audio remains inside Instagram. To get an audio file, download an accessible Reel video or make a permitted screen recording, then extract the soundtrack with a phone app, Shortcuts, FFmpeg, or another converter.

Why is there no Save Audio button on a Reel?
The Reel may not have a standard audio page, the sound may be unavailable or restricted in your country, the post may be private or muted, or Instagram may have changed its interface. Try the current mobile app and tap the audio name at the bottom of the Reel when one is displayed.
Why is my downloaded Instagram Reel silent?
The most common reason is licensed music. Instagram may allow the song to play in the app but omit it from an official download. Rights may also have changed, the Reel may have been muted, or a screen-recording restriction may have prevented audio capture.
Can I download audio from a private Instagram account?
Not through the ordinary public-download path, and you should not bypass the account’s privacy controls. If you are authorized to view the Reel, ask the creator to send you the original file or grant permission through an appropriate first-party workflow.
Does Instagram notify a creator when I download a Reel?
Do not use notification behavior as a permission test. Interface behavior can change, and a download—whether or not a notification appears—does not grant copyright permission. If you plan to reuse the audio, ask the creator and clear any music rights.
Can I use downloaded Reel audio on TikTok or YouTube?
Not automatically. Instagram’s permission to play licensed music may be limited to Instagram, and the creator may own rights in the voiceover or recording. Obtain permission and any platform-specific music license before publishing it elsewhere.
Can I turn an Instagram Reel into an MP3 on iPhone?
Yes, if you have a video containing an accessible soundtrack. Save the video to Photos or Files, then use an audio-extraction shortcut based on Encode Media with Audio Only enabled, or use a reputable editor that exports M4A or MP3. If the source video is silent, conversion cannot restore the missing sound.
Can I use downloaded Reel audio in a business Reel?
Do not assume so. Meta says its licensed music library is intended for personal, non-commercial use, with availability varying by region and account. Use music with commercial rights, eligible Meta Sound Collection content, or a provider whose license covers the intended campaign.
Does screen recording capture Instagram audio?
Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. iPhone apps may block audio or video recording. Android devices vary and may require you to select device audio, microphone audio, or both. Test a short permitted recording before relying on the method.

No. Renaming changes only the filename extension; it does not convert the container or codec. Use an audio-extraction or conversion tool instead.

For a real MP3, M4A, or WAV, obtain an accessible video or permitted screen recording and extract its soundtrack locally.
