The right combination depends on your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and other assets—not on a universal formula. More funds do not automatically mean more diversification; compare their holdings and costs before adding them.
What “diversifying beyond the S&P 500” means
Diversification means spreading investments both across asset categories and within each category. An S&P 500 index fund provides exposure to large U.S. companies. It may be a useful part of a portfolio, but adding another fund that owns many of the same companies may change little. Check the funds’ holdings, market coverage and concentration rather than counting how many funds you own. The SEC’s Investor.gov explains diversification and why holdings matter.
For example, a total U.S. stock-market index fund reaches beyond large companies; Investor.gov notes that “A total stock market index fund, for example, owns stock in thousands of companies.” That broader reach can add smaller-company exposure, but check how much the fund overlaps with your S&P 500 fund. A fund focused on one industry or theme may add concentration rather than broad diversification.
What investments can add a different kind of exposure?
Broader U.S. stock-market exposure
A broad-market U.S. stock fund may include small- and mid-sized companies as well as large ones. Compare its index and holdings with those of the S&P 500 fund: the degree of overlap determines how much distinct exposure it contributes. Smaller-company exposure still carries stock-market risk and is not a guarantee of better returns.

International stock funds
International funds add exposure to companies outside the United States. Review which regions and company sizes the fund covers, and consider that foreign investing can involve currency fluctuations, higher costs, different liquidity, less readily available information and legal or market risks. U.S.-registered mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are possible ways to access foreign markets. Read the fund’s prospectus and holdings; an international label alone does not tell you how broad its coverage is. The SEC’s investor bulletin on international investing discusses these considerations.
Bonds and cash equivalents
Bonds and cash equivalents can change a portfolio’s risk profile compared with an all-stock allocation. Their roles and risks differ: bond values can fluctuate, while cash equivalents may serve a different purpose from long-term growth investments. Whether either belongs in your portfolio, and in what amount, depends on your goals, time horizon, ability and willingness to accept losses, and existing assets. Do not treat a particular stock-and-bond split as right for everyone.

How to choose an approach that fits your circumstances
- Set the purpose and time horizon. Identify what the money is for and when you expect to use it. A portfolio for a near-term need may call for different risk choices from one intended for a distant goal.
- Assess risk honestly. Consider both your willingness to tolerate market losses and your financial ability to absorb them. Investor.gov cautions that risk questionnaires sponsored by companies may be biased toward products or services sold by their sponsors, so use them as one input rather than a verdict.
- Review your whole portfolio. Include workplace retirement plans, other investment accounts and relevant household assets. A new fund’s role depends on what you already own.
- Compare holdings, exposure and costs. Check the index or strategy, top holdings, geographic and company-size coverage, and fund expenses. When funds own substantially overlapping holdings, extra fund count may mean added costs without meaningful diversification.
- Choose a management method. Decide whether you want to select and monitor investments yourself or use a fund that manages an allocation over time.
DIY fund selection or a target date fund?
If you manage the allocation yourself, you choose the funds and decide how to keep their proportions aligned with your plan. A target date fund can package an allocation of underlying funds and adjust its stock-and-bond mix as its target date approaches. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance describes them this way: “Target date funds are investment funds that hold a mix of investments, such as stock, bond, and other investment funds.” The SEC bulletin is investor education, not a rule or Commission statement.
A target year by itself does not establish that a fund is suitable. Compare its glide path (how its mix changes over time), strategy, fees—including costs of underlying funds—and holdings. Also consider how it fits with investments elsewhere in your household portfolio; a target date fund’s allocation may overlap with other holdings. SEC guidance is available in the Investor.gov target date fund bulletin.

Rebalance when the portfolio drifts from its plan
Market movements can change the proportions of a portfolio over time. Rebalancing means bringing those proportions back toward the allocation you chose. Decide on a method that suits your circumstances, then review the portfolio periodically or when it moves meaningfully away from its intended allocation. There is no single interval established as correct for everyone. Before trading, consider costs and any tax consequences that apply to your account.

Diversification can spread exposure, but it does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. Different investments can fall at the same time, and a diversified portfolio can still lose value. Historical comparisons illustrate only what happened over a specified period, not what will happen next.

As one dated illustration, Fidelity Investments describes a 2025 portfolio with 60% stocks and 40% short-term and fixed-income investments: 42% U.S. total stock market, 18% international stocks, 35% U.S. aggregate bonds and 5% three-month Treasury bills. Its comparison uses specified indexes and Fidelity data as of December 31, 2025; Fidelity reports a less severe interim drawdown for that example than for its U.S.-stock comparison. This is one provider’s retrospective illustration, not a personal allocation recommendation or evidence of future results. Fidelity cautions that past performance does not guarantee future results and that diversification does not ensure a profit or prevent loss. See Fidelity’s portfolio diversification explanation for the example and its context.
