You can turn off Firefox’s AI enhancements with its Block AI enhancements switch, disable built-in AI features in Visual Studio Code with chat.disableAIFeatures, and manage Chrome’s documented generative-AI controls through organizational policies for enrolled browsers. The options differ: Firefox provides per-feature controls for individual users, VS Code has one setting for its built-in AI and Copilot extensions, and Google’s cited Chrome instructions are for administrators—not a universal switch for personal, unmanaged installations.

What can you disable in each app?

The best method depends on whether you want to hide AI features for yourself or enforce a setting for other users. These controls also cover different parts of each app: Firefox exposes several browser features, VS Code has a broad AI setting, and the documented Chrome mechanism is policy management.

App Who the documented controls are for Scope Can users change the choice? What the controls cover
Firefox Individual users and administrators One global block or per-feature choices Yes for ordinary preferences; administrators can lock policy choices Translations, PDF image alt text, AI tab groups, link previews, and the sidebar chatbot
Visual Studio Code Individual users or workspace configuration One setting, chat.disableAIFeatures Setting is available at User or Workspace scope; the cited documentation does not establish an administrator lock mechanism Built-in Chat and inline suggestions, and Copilot extensions
Chrome on Linux Administrators of enrolled browsers Generative-AI defaults and individual feature policy controls Policies are managed by the organization Generative-AI browser features covered by Google’s policy catalog

Firefox currently has the most explicit consumer-facing choice among these three. For a current desktop release, Mozilla’s AI Controls page provides a global switch and feature-level controls. Microsoft documents one setting that disables VS Code’s built-in AI features and Copilot extensions. Google’s cited documentation describes policies for enrolled browsers, not a consumer-facing toggle for every unmanaged Chrome installation.

How do I turn off or selectively limit AI in Firefox?

Open Firefox > Settings (or Preferences) > AI Controls. Turn on Block AI enhancements to block current and future AI-enhanced features, or leave it off and block only the features you do not want.

Block all AI enhancements

  1. Open the Firefox menu bar and choose Firefox > Settings or Preferences, depending on the interface label.
  2. Select AI Controls.
  3. Turn on Block AI enhancements.

This is the simplest choice if you want a broad default rather than reviewing each browser feature. Mozilla describes the control as applying to current and future AI-enhanced features, so the set of affected features can change as Firefox adds or updates them.

Block only selected features

  1. Go to Firefox > Settings/Preferences > AI Controls.
  2. Leave Block AI enhancements off.
  3. For each feature you want to restrict, open its dropdown and choose Blocked.

Mozilla lists controls for translations, PDF image alt text, AI tab groups, link previews, and the sidebar chatbot. The dropdown states are meaningful: Available means the feature is visible and usable, Enabled means you opted in, and Blocked means it is hidden and unusable. If you want selective control, use the feature dropdowns rather than the global switch.

What if AI Controls is missing?

The documented controls apply to desktop Firefox releases with the AI Controls page. Mozilla’s feature set and labels may change as new features ship, so check the Firefox version and the current Settings page after an update. The cited instructions do not establish that the same page or controls are available in every Firefox release or on every platform.

How can an administrator manage Firefox AI features?

Administrators can deploy Firefox’s GenerativeAI enterprise policy. Use its Enabled setting for a default-off posture, set supported feature keys to false to control individual features, and use Locked when users must not be able to change the organization’s choice.

Choose a policy scope

  • Enabled: false sets AI features off through policy.
  • Chatbot, LinkPreviews, and TabGroups allow individual feature control.
  • Locked prevents users from overriding the policy choice.

The policy is useful when a preference alone is not enough—for example, when an organization needs a consistent configuration across managed Firefox installations. A user’s local choice and an administrator’s locked policy are not equivalent: the first is reversible by the user, while the second is intended to enforce the administrator’s configuration.

Mozilla’s documented policy keys name the chatbot, link previews, and tab groups individually. Do not assume those keys are a complete list of every setting on Firefox’s consumer-facing AI Controls page; check the policy schema that corresponds to the Firefox version you deploy.

How do I disable AI in Visual Studio Code on Linux?

Set chat.disableAIFeatures to true in VS Code Settings at either User or Workspace scope. Microsoft says this hides built-in AI features such as Chat and inline suggestions and disables Copilot extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings in Visual Studio Code.
  2. Search for chat.disableAIFeatures.
  3. Set the setting to true at User scope to apply it to your user settings, or at Workspace scope for the current workspace.

Microsoft also lists this control in its AI settings reference. The effect is broader than hiding the Chat interface alone: the documented setting also hides inline suggestions and disables Copilot extensions. If you want to keep some AI features available, the cited Microsoft instructions establish this broad disable setting, not a separate per-feature configuration method.

What the VS Code setting means for data sent to Copilot

Microsoft’s FAQ says that when AI is disabled, or when a user is not signed in to Copilot, data is not sent to Copilot backend services. This is a statement about Copilot backend transmission under those conditions; it should not be read as a claim that disabling the setting removes data previously sent, changes unrelated extensions’ behavior, or governs every service installed in VS Code.

How do organizations block Chrome generative AI on Linux?

Google documents administrative policies for enrolled Chrome browsers, including Linux. Administrators can use the Generative AI policy area to set defaults and control individual generative-AI features; the cited source does not establish a single equivalent consumer switch for an unmanaged personal installation.

For enrolled browsers

Use Chrome Enterprise and Education policy management for the enrolled browser. Google says these policies apply when users open Chrome on a computer where the browser is enrolled, including Linux. The policy catalog contains generative-AI defaults and controls for individual features, so administrators can choose the scope supported by the specific policy rather than relying on a user preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a personal, unmanaged installation

Do not assume that an organization policy applies to your personal browser: Google’s cited instructions are explicitly about enrolled browsers. For unmanaged Chrome, check the settings available in the Chrome release installed on your system. The cited Google documentation does not establish one consumer-facing switch that disables all generative AI features in unmanaged Chrome.

Which approach should I use?

Use a per-feature preference when you want to keep useful features while restricting others; use a global setting when you want a simple off posture; use policy when an organization needs to enforce a choice across managed installations.

  • Personal Firefox: choose Block AI enhancements for a broad block, or set individual dropdowns to Blocked for selective control.
  • Managed Firefox: deploy GenerativeAI; set defaults or feature keys, and use Locked if users must not override them.
  • Personal VS Code: set chat.disableAIFeatures to true at User scope for the broad documented disable behavior.
  • Workspace-specific VS Code: set the same control at Workspace scope when the choice should apply to the current workspace rather than your general user settings.
  • Managed Chrome: use the applicable policies for enrolled browsers; for unmanaged Chrome, verify the controls in the installed release rather than assuming the policy instructions apply.

What should I check after changing a setting?

Confirm the setting in the same app and scope where you changed it, then check that the affected feature behaves as expected. Updates can change feature names, controls, and policy schemas, so re-check the exact UI or administrative policy documentation after major application updates.

  • In Firefox, verify whether the global block is on or whether the intended feature dropdowns show Blocked.
  • In VS Code, confirm chat.disableAIFeatures is true at the intended User or Workspace scope.
  • In Chrome, distinguish an enrolled, policy-managed browser from an unmanaged one before troubleshooting a policy that does not appear to take effect.

Some VS Code AI controls are labeled experimental or preview in Microsoft’s settings reference, and available controls can change between releases. The same general caution applies to Firefox feature availability and Chrome policy behavior: use documentation matching the installed application version and, for managed deployments, the management configuration in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does disabling AI in VS Code delete data already sent to Copilot?

No such deletion is established by the documented setting. Microsoft’s FAQ describes whether data is sent to Copilot backend services when AI is disabled or the user is not signed in; that does not say the setting erases prior transmissions.

Does Firefox’s global AI block include features added later?

Mozilla describes the switch as blocking current and future AI-enhanced features. The exact feature set can still change as Firefox releases new features or updates its controls.

Can I block Chrome AI for one Linux user without enrolling the browser?

The cited Google documentation covers policies for enrolled Chrome browsers and does not establish a consumer-facing all-AI switch for an unmanaged installation. Check the settings in the Chrome release you have installed.
