To stop a consumer chatbot from using new conversations for model training, change its provider-specific privacy control: turn off Improve the model for everyone in ChatGPT, switch off Keep Activity in Gemini, disable Copilot’s Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations, and deselect Grok’s training option under X’s Grok & Third-party Collaborators. These are usually forward-looking controls. They do not automatically erase old chats, delete memories, stop all safety processing, or disable advertising and personalization. Use a temporary or private-chat mode for one-off sensitive conversations, and check business or school-account terms separately.
What does turning off AI training actually change?
A training opt-out tells a provider not to use eligible future conversations to improve or fine-tune its general AI models. It normally leaves the conversation available in your history and may still allow the service to process it so the chatbot can answer, detect abuse, secure the system, comply with law, or deliver other product functions.
Keep these controls separate:
- Training: whether future text, voice, images, uploads, or other interactions can be included in model-improvement work.
- Storage and deletion: whether a conversation remains in history or is removed from an activity log. Deleting a chat is not the same as opting out of training.
- Memory and personalization: information used to tailor replies. A provider can offer independent switches for saved memories or personalization.
- Feedback: a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, report, or written comment can create an exception. Some providers say a conversation attached to submitted feedback may be used for training even after you opted out.
- Safety, security, and compliance: providers may retain or inspect data for abuse prevention, fraud detection, legal obligations, or system security.
- Advertising and connected services: a training switch does not automatically govern ad targeting, third-party apps, account activity, or public posts.
Because labels and availability change by country, age, subscription, sign-in state, and administrator policy, use the exact menu path for your account and confirm the resulting status before sending sensitive material.

Which chatbot controls training, retention, and sharing?

How do I stop ChatGPT from training on my chats?
On a personal ChatGPT account, turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI states: "When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models."
Web instructions
- Open ChatGPT and select the account menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone, then select Done if the dialog presents a confirmation.
iPhone and Android instructions
- Open the sidebar and tap your profile icon.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
The setting follows your signed-in account across web and mobile, so you do not normally need to repeat it on every device. Existing regular and archived conversations remain in history; turning the switch off does not delete them.
When should I use Temporary Chat?
Use Temporary Chat when you want a one-off session that does not appear in chat history, does not create memories, and is not used to improve OpenAI models. OpenAI says Temporary Chats can be retained for up to 30 days for safety before deletion. This is a separate mode, not merely another name for the account-wide training switch.
What exception applies to feedback?
If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback after opting out, OpenAI may use the conversation associated with that feedback for training. Avoid attaching sensitive content to feedback unless you accept that exception.
Do business accounts work the same way?
OpenAI says inputs and outputs from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API offerings are not used to train models by default. Those products have different contractual and administrative controls, so an organization should rely on its workspace terms rather than a personal-account screenshot.
How do I turn off Gemini activity and training?
Gemini combines saved activity and model-improvement behavior in Keep Activity. Turning it off prevents future chats from appearing in Activity and from being used to train Google’s AI models, unless you deliberately send feedback.

Change Keep Activity on the web
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- Open Settings & help.
- Under Activity, select the status shown as On.
- Choose Turn off to stop future saving, or Turn off and delete activity to remove the activity displayed there as part of the same action.
Keep Activity off does not mean Gemini stops processing a prompt. Google says conversations can be held for up to 72 hours so Gemini can answer requests, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public.

Gemini Apps Activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default. Google provides choices of 3 months, 36 months, or no automatic deletion. This retention preference is distinct from the immediate training opt-out and should be reviewed if your goal is to minimize stored history.
Handle voice, video, and screen sharing
Audio and Gemini Live video or screen-share data use a separate improvement control, and that control is off by default. Check it independently if you use voice or Live features; changing Keep Activity alone is not evidence that every media-improvement setting has changed.
Understand the feedback exception
Google’s statement qualifies the opt-out with an exception for feedback: future chats are not used for training unless you choose to send Google feedback. Treat a feedback submission as a deliberate data-sharing action even when Keep Activity is off.
How do I opt out of Microsoft Copilot conversation training?
Copilot exposes separate switches for typed and voice interactions. Turn off both if you do not want future conversation activity or voice conversations included in training.

Windows and macOS

Microsoft’s opt-out is narrower than a universal “do not process” command. It excludes future conversation activities from training, but Microsoft says other general product or system improvement, advertising, digital-safety, security, and compliance uses are not excluded by this choice.

Separate personalization, memory, and history
Copilot personalization and memory have their own controls. You can disable personalization or delete all saved memory without deleting conversation history. Copilot conversation history is retained for 18 months by default, and you can remove individual items or all history through the history controls.
Consumer Copilot versus Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot used with an organizational account follows enterprise data-protection terms and can behave differently from consumer Copilot. A work administrator may control retention, auditing, and available privacy switches, so employees should consult their organization’s policy before treating the consumer path as authoritative.
How do I stop Grok from using my X data?
Grok’s relevant control is in X’s account-level privacy settings, not only inside a Grok chat. X says: "Opting out means your data will not be used for training. You can still use Grok Bot normally."

This option is broader than a prompt-history toggle: it names public X data as well as your Grok interactions, inputs, and results. If you change only a setting inside a chatbot interface, public-post training permissions may remain unchanged.
What is known about Claude’s training opt-out?
A consumer-account comparison dated 17 October 2026 reports a path of Settings → Privacy → Help improve Claude for Free, Pro, and Max accounts. It says switching that control off excludes future chats from training, while safety-classifier exceptions may still apply.
Because that path was not confirmed against an official Anthropic help page, treat it as a verification item: open your own Claude account, read the current wording beside the switch, and check Anthropic’s live privacy policy before relying on it for regulated or highly confidential work. Do not assume that an account-level training choice deletes old conversations or controls every safety and security process.

Can Meta AI users opt out of training and ad-related use?
For U.S. users, the current comparison indicates that Meta generally does not provide one simple, universal switch to opt out of Meta AI training or ad-targeting use. Availability is region- and account-dependent, so the absence of a toggle in one account is not proof that every country has the same policy.

Open the privacy controls in the Meta product where you use AI and read the scope of each available option. A control for deleting activity, managing connected apps, or limiting ad personalization may address a different use than model training. Because the available evidence does not establish one global menu path or retention period, do not promise a complete opt-out based on a setting intended for another Meta service.
Does turning off training delete old chats?
No. In the documented services, turning off training is generally forward-looking. ChatGPT keeps regular and archived chats in history; Copilot keeps conversation history for 18 months by default; and Gemini’s Keep Activity control offers a separate Turn off and delete activity choice.
Use the matching deletion control
- ChatGPT: delete individual conversations or use Temporary Chat for future sessions that do not appear in history. The training switch alone does not remove existing chats.
- Gemini: choose Turn off and delete activity when changing Keep Activity, then review the Activity page for remaining entries. Google still describes up to 72 hours of retention for service, feedback, and safety purposes.
- Copilot: delete individual history items or all conversation history separately from the training switches. The default history period is 18 months.
- Grok: the X training option covers future use of the named data categories; use X’s account and post controls separately for deleting existing content.
- Claude and Meta AI: follow the deletion tools shown in the current account and policy. The available comparison does not establish a universal retention period for either service.
Deletion requests can have processing or safety-retention windows. Do not describe a deleted item as instantly absent from every provider backup or review system unless the provider explicitly makes that promise.

Coverage is not uniform. Copilot has an explicit second switch for voice conversations. Gemini separates audio and Gemini Live video or screen-share improvement from Keep Activity. Grok’s X setting expressly includes public X data, interactions, inputs, and results.
ChatGPT’s documented account switch refers to new conversations generally, while Temporary Chat describes chats rather than a universal guarantee for every external connector. For any service, read the wording beside the control before uploading images, files, recordings, or content pulled from connected apps. If the label names only “conversation activity,” do not infer that it governs public posts or a separate voice or media pipeline.

How should teams configure chatbot privacy?
Consumer and workplace accounts can have different defaults, retention schedules, and administrator visibility. OpenAI’s business and API offerings are not used for training by default; Microsoft 365 Copilot follows enterprise data-protection terms; and a school or company administrator may hide or enforce consumer controls.
Team checklist
- Identify whether the account is personal, managed by an employer or school, or connected to an API or enterprise workspace.
- Record the provider’s exact training, retention, memory, feedback, and deletion settings in the organization’s policy.
- Decide whether voice, images, files, public posts, and connected applications need separate restrictions.
- Tell users that a training opt-out does not necessarily prevent safety, security, legal, advertising, or general product-improvement processing.
- Provide an approved workflow for deleting a conversation or requesting account-level deletion when a project ends.
Administrators should test the controls with a non-sensitive prompt and verify which history, memory, and activity pages change. Never use a consumer account for confidential material merely because one training toggle is off.
How can I verify that an opt-out is working?
- Open the privacy page again and confirm the switch visibly reads Off or is deselected. Take a dated screenshot for your own records if the setting matters for compliance.
- Check a second signed-in device where the provider says the setting should synchronize, such as ChatGPT web and mobile.
- Review the provider’s activity or history page to distinguish a training status from stored conversation history.
- Do not submit thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written feedback, or bug reports containing confidential text after opting out unless you understand the provider’s feedback exception.
- For voice or live-media features, inspect their dedicated improvement setting rather than assuming the text-chat switch covers them.
- If the control is missing, confirm that you are signed in to the intended account, check country and age eligibility, and ask the workspace administrator whether a policy controls it.
A setting can change names or move after an app update. Recheck the provider’s current privacy page whenever you change plans, switch from a personal to a work account, or enable a new modality such as voice or screen sharing.

Can I keep chatbot history while preventing model training?
Usually, yes. ChatGPT and Copilot document separate history and training controls, and Gemini lets you choose whether to turn off activity alone or turn it off and delete activity. Keeping history still leaves the provider with stored content, so use deletion or a temporary mode when storage itself is the concern.
Which privacy switch covers voice conversations?
