Can you digitize an Xbox game disc?
Yes, for eligible titles through Xbox’s announced disc-to-digital entitlement process. “Digitize” in this context means claiming a limited license associated with your Xbox account; it does not mean copying the game files from the disc to a PC. The process announced by Xbox Wire on August 26, 2026 supports eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs used on a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with a disc drive.
Xbox described the feature as beginning with thousands of titles, while noting that not every title would be available at launch. That is a launch-era description, not a current count or a guarantee that a particular game qualifies. Xbox may add or remove eligible titles, so check current Xbox guidance and your console before relying on the option.
How to add an eligible disc game to your digital library
- Check the game and console. The announced process applies to eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs on supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X consoles with a disc drive. Not every game or disc qualifies.
- Insert the qualifying disc. Use the disc-drive console where you want to claim the entitlement.
- Launch the game. Xbox’s announcement describes inserting the supported disc and launching the game to claim its digital entitlement. Exact menu labels and prompts may vary; no specific button sequence is established in the announcement.
- Check your account’s library experience. If the entitlement is available, install or play the game using the options supported for that title. Xbox says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming apply only where supported, so do not assume that every claimed game can be played on a PC, another device, or through cloud streaming.
- Keep the qualifying disc. The license remains conditional on continued possession of that disc; the entitlement is not an independent digital copy that can be transferred without it.
What happens to the disc after claiming?
Keep it. Microsoft’s Microsoft Services Agreement sets out usage rules under which the digital entitlement is tied to continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require revalidation and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it. Treat the digital entitlement as a convenient account-linked way to access an eligible game, not as permission to sell or give away the disc while keeping an unconditional digital license.

Can you play an Xbox disc on Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no physical game-disc drive, so it cannot read an Xbox game disc for either the announced disc-to-digital claim process or an ordinary disc-based install. The disc-reading route requires a supported disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Attaching a USB optical drive does not make Series S a disc-reading console.

Is the feature available to everyone?
The official Xbox announcement located here, dated August 26, 2026, says Insider testing was starting August 31. It does not confirm that the feature had reached general availability by October 4, 2026. Reports of a broader rollout are not enough to establish that it is available for every region, account, console, or title. Check current Xbox announcements and your console’s game experience for availability rather than assuming the option will appear.
Jason Ronald, VP Next Generation at Xbox, described the motivation as: “preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.” That aim does not change the eligibility and continued-possession conditions on the entitlement.
