To fix a slow streaming chat UI, measure two separate pipelines: the time it takes the model and server to deliver output, and the time React and the browser take to display it. High time to first token usually points upstream; fast token delivery paired with long React commits or paint work points to excessive rendering. Both can be problems at once, so measure before changing the update cadence.

Why can an LLM stream feel slow even when it is streaming?

Streaming shows output as it becomes available instead of waiting for the complete response. That can lower time to first token and make the interface feel more responsive, but it does not make the model generate the full answer in less time. A delay before the first visible text and a pause after text begins are different symptoms, and they can have different causes.

Think of the experience as two connected pipelines. The upstream path includes the request, model generation, server-side work, and delivery to the browser. The client path includes receiving each chunk, updating application state, React rendering, and browser paint. If you measure only total request time, or only React, you can miss the actual bottleneck.

  • Late first text: investigate time to first token (TTFT), request setup, and work that must finish before the stream reaches the client.
  • Text arrives but the interface stutters: investigate React commit duration and browser paint work while output is displayed.
  • Both are slow: measure each pipeline independently; fixing one will not necessarily fix the other.

OpenAI’s latency guidance recommends processing tokens faster, generating fewer tokens, using fewer input tokens, making fewer requests, parallelizing independent work, reducing waiting, and avoiding an LLM when a conventional interface can answer faster. These are upstream and product-design levers; they do not replace measuring client rendering.

How do I find out whether the model or React is causing the delay?

Collect server/API timing, React commit timing, and browser performance data for the same interaction. Compare percentiles, not just averages: P50, P75, and P95 help show typical and slower experiences separately.

1. Measure the stream on the server and API path

Record request start, first event or token, final event, total request time, output-token count, and token velocity. Keep the definitions consistent: for example, use the same start point and the same definition of the first delivered event when comparing requests. A first-token timestamp isolates startup delay from the time spent generating the remainder of the answer.

Review P50, P75, and P95 for these timings. An average can obscure a slower tail, while percentile views make it easier to see whether a delay affects most requests or a smaller share. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes TTFT from overall request time, so keep those measurements separate rather than treating them as one latency figure.

2. Measure React commits around the transcript

Wrap the transcript subtree—and, when useful, the surrounding UI—in React’s <Profiler>. Record actualDuration, baseDuration, startTime, and commitTime. actualDuration describes the work performed for that commit; baseDuration estimates the cost of rendering the subtree without optimizations.

Look for repeated commits during a single response and note how their durations change as the transcript grows. A commit count alone is not a verdict: the important question is whether rendering work is consuming enough time to harm responsiveness. Profiling itself adds overhead, so use it deliberately for diagnosis and remove or limit it in production builds.

3. Inspect browser paint and scripting work

Use Chrome DevTools paint flashing and performance traces while a response is arriving. These help distinguish React’s commit work from browser work such as layout, paint, and repeated text replacement. Chrome warns that repeatedly assigning a complete textContent or innerText value for every chunk can cause unnecessary removal and replacement work.

For plain text, keep updates bounded to the relevant text node. For Markdown or other rich text, incremental parsing and rendering can avoid reprocessing the whole answer on every chunk. If streamed content is inserted as rich output, sanitize it before insertion; incremental rendering is not a substitute for safe handling.

4. Classify the result before editing code

What the measurements show Likely area to investigate Useful next check
High TTFT, short React commits Upstream request, model, server, or delivery path Compare request start to first event, then check work that must complete before delivery.
Low TTFT, long commits or paint work React update frequency or browser rendering Trace commits during generation and inspect whether each chunk triggers broad or repeated work.
High TTFT and long commits Both pipelines Keep the measurements separate and address the largest user-visible delay in each.
Low measured commit time but visible stutter Browser work or another client-side task may be involved Use a performance trace and paint flashing instead of assuming React is the only source.

How should I buffer streamed deltas in React?

Do not make every incoming delta a reason to rerender the entire application. Accumulate deltas in a mutable buffer or stream store, then publish a transcript snapshot on a controlled schedule. An animation-frame schedule or a measured time interval can reduce update frequency; there is no universally safe cadence established by the cited guidance.

A useful component shape separates receiving data from displaying it: a stream reader appends deltas, a scheduler publishes a snapshot, and the transcript renderer receives that snapshot along with stable presentation props. Input state, cancellation controls, and connection status should live in small components that do not need to update for every text change.

Conceptual update flow

onTextDelta(delta):
  buffer += delta
  if no publish is scheduled:
    schedule publish

publish:
  transcriptSnapshot = buffer
  update transcript view

This is a shape, not a drop-in implementation: the transport and scheduler determine how events and cleanup work. If using animation frames, ensure only one publish is pending at a time and cancel scheduled work when the stream or component is finished. If using a time window, measure its effect on both commit cost and perceived smoothness rather than choosing a number by convention.

Choose the update policy with measurements

Policy What it changes Trade-off to measure
Update on every delta Publishes each received piece of text to React immediately. Can create many commits and repeated browser work; the display can be responsive, but update frequency may be excessive.
Animation-frame batching Groups deltas until a scheduled visual update. Can reduce redundant work while keeping updates tied to display scheduling; verify smoothness and commit duration in the target app.
Time-window batching Publishes accumulated text at a measured interval. Can bound update frequency, but longer waits may make text appear less immediate. Tune against observed performance and user experience.

Track the change with the same server timings, React profiler data, and browser traces used for diagnosis. Do not optimize for a target render count or frame rate invented in the absence of application measurements.

Which React tools help reduce unnecessary streaming renders?

Start with component boundaries and update flow, then apply React optimizations where profiling shows they help. A broad memoization pass can leave the underlying cause untouched if stream updates still invalidate a large tree.

Use React 18 automatic batching where it applies

React 18 batches updates from promises, timeouts, and native event handlers, which can combine multiple state updates into fewer renders. This helps when a callback makes several related updates, but it does not mean that a stream producing many separate callbacks is automatically reduced to one render for the whole response.

Use transitions for expensive, non-urgent work

useTransition marks updates as background work that React can interrupt for urgent interactions. It can help keep non-urgent transcript-related work from taking priority over responsive controls. Do not use a transition to control a text input; input updates need to remain responsive.

Memoize children only when props can stay stable

memo can let a child skip rendering when its props are unchanged, but it is not a guarantee that the child will never render. It is ineffective when a parent creates new object or function props on every render, because those props are not unchanged. Profile first, isolate the transcript subtree, and stabilize the specific props that matter before adding memoization broadly.

Remove unnecessary Effect-driven state updates

useMemo can reuse an expensive calculation while its dependencies remain stable. Before adding it, inspect chains of Effects that update state: React notes that these are a common source of repeated renders. Removing unnecessary state synchronization may fix the repeated work more directly than memoizing calculations around it.

How do I keep streamed text, Markdown, and code from slowing the browser?

Plain text and rich text have different rendering costs. A plain transcript can update a bounded text node, while Markdown or code may need parsing and formatting as output grows. Rebuilding the entire rendered answer on every chunk can repeat work for content that has not changed.

For plain text

Append deltas to a buffer and publish a current snapshot according to the measured update policy. Avoid replacing the whole document or repeatedly removing and reinserting the complete text for every small chunk. Inspect browser paint work as well as React commits, because a short React commit does not guarantee that the browser did little work.

For Markdown and code

Use an incremental parser and rendering approach so incoming content does not require needless reprocessing of all prior output. Streamed Markdown can be incomplete at a chunk boundary, so the displayed structure may evolve as more text arrives. Sanitize rich output before inserting it into the page; formatting convenience does not remove the need for safe insertion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right scope of optimization depends on the output format, not just the number of tokens. A text-only response may need a bounded text update, while formatted output may need careful incremental parsing and sanitization.

What should I change in the API or server path?

After measurement identifies upstream delay, reduce avoidable work before or during generation. For new OpenAI integrations, the Responses API provides semantic server-sent events; a React client can handle events such as response.output_text.delta and should also handle the completion event explicitly.

Reduce work that delays useful output

  • Keep answers concise where the task permits and set appropriate stopping limits; generating more output is a major latency contributor.
  • Reduce unnecessary input tokens and requests where doing so preserves the required context and behavior.
  • Parallelize independent operations when correctness permits, rather than waiting for each avoidable sequential step.
  • When moderation, translation, or other server-side processing is needed, stream through the backend in a way that can deliver useful chunks rather than waiting for the entire response to finish.
  • For a task that a conventional UI can answer faster, avoid sending it through an LLM unnecessarily.

Handle event completion and abandoned requests

Treat deltas and completion as distinct parts of the stream lifecycle. Handle the completion event explicitly so the UI can stop presenting the response as active and finalize its displayed state. Add cancellation and disconnect handling so abandoned generations do not continue consuming work; the exact cancellation API depends on the transport and framework, so verify it against the current SDK documentation.

How do I decide which fix to try first?

Use the evidence to choose the smallest relevant change, then repeat the same measurements. That makes it possible to tell whether an improvement came from changing generation or delivery, reducing React work, or reducing browser paint work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Capture a baseline. Record request start, first event, completion, output-token count, token velocity, React commit timings, and a browser trace for the same user journey.
  2. Identify the dominant delay. Separate TTFT from total request time, and compare React commit time with browser paint and scripting activity.
  3. Change one layer. If the delay is upstream, reduce avoidable generation or waiting. If commits dominate, buffer deltas or isolate the transcript from urgent controls. If paint dominates, bound text updates or use incremental rich-text rendering.
  4. Repeat the measurement. Compare P50, P75, and P95 for the server path and inspect commit and paint behavior under the same conditions.
  5. Keep only useful complexity. Retain transitions, memoization, or more elaborate parsing only when they address measured work without making the interface harder to maintain.

There is no authoritative universal maximum for token-update frequency, render count, or guaranteed frame rate. The right cadence depends on the application’s transport, output format, component tree, and observed rendering cost, so tune it against the target app rather than adopting an unsupported threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does streaming make the model finish generating an answer sooner?

No. Streaming exposes available output earlier and can improve perceived responsiveness, but the time needed to generate the complete output is not reduced just by enabling streaming.

Can React Profiler tell me how long the API took to return the answer?

No. React’s profiler measures rendering work in a React tree, not model or network latency. Pair it with timestamps from the request and stream so each measurement describes the stage it actually covers.

Should I keep profiling enabled for every production user?

Profiling adds overhead, so it is best used deliberately for diagnosis or limited production investigation rather than treated as free instrumentation. The measurements are most useful when interpreted alongside request timings and browser traces.
