AI-powered phishing is best detected and blocked with layers, not by judging grammar. Generative tools let criminals produce fluent, personalized email, realistic profile images, cloned voices, and convincing video. A polished message can still lead to a fake sign-in page or payment diversion. Treat unexpected urgency, credential requests, payment changes, and login prompts as unverified; inspect the real sender and destination; confirm consequential requests through a separate trusted channel; report the message; and protect accounts with phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA). Organizations should combine gateway filtering, URL and attachment analysis, identity monitoring, user reporting, and investigation of the complete path from message to sign-in.
This guide explains what AI changes, how individuals can check a suspicious message, which controls block delivery and credential theft, how to respond after a possible compromise, and how to evaluate automated defenses without assuming a vendor claim is an independent test result.
What makes AI-powered phishing different?
Generative AI lowers the effort needed to create social-engineering campaigns and improves the details that once exposed fraud. The FBI says criminals use it to write spear-phishing and social-engineering text, translate messages, create realistic profile images or identification documents, clone voices, and generate video impersonations. It can remove spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing that people have traditionally used as warning signs. A visual, voice, or writing style therefore cannot authenticate a sender.

What the observed campaign data shows
The Canadian Centre reported more than 100 campaigns targeting Microsoft Entra ID accounts from 2023 through early 2025. In its categorized sample, 91% were business-email-compromise (BEC) phishing campaigns and 59% used living-off-trusted-sites techniques. Those percentages describe the Centre’s observed sample, not all phishing worldwide; conventional methods made up the remainder of categorized campaigns.
| Measure | Observed value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Entra ID campaigns observed | More than 100 | Canadian Centre sample covering 2023 to early 2025 |
| BEC share of categorized campaigns | 91% | Sample-specific, not a global prevalence rate |
| Living-off-trusted-sites share | 59% | Sample-specific use of legitimate online services to host or relay activity |
Because attackers can place content on a reputable hosting service or relay a login through a familiar platform, a simple blocklist of newly registered or obviously malicious domains will miss some campaigns. Controls must examine identity, behavior, destination, and the sign-in event as well as the message text.
How can I tell if an AI-written email is phishing?
Do not use fluency as a trust signal. Verify the sender, destination, requested action, and authentication path before you disclose information, approve money, or sign in.
- Pause when the request is unexpected. Urgency, secrecy, a demand to disclose credentials, a request to change payment details, or an unsolicited sign-in prompt should be treated as unverified—even when the message is perfectly written.
- Inspect the actual sender identity. Read the complete address, not only the display name. Check whether the domain is the one your organization or contact normally uses, and be alert to look-alike characters, newly introduced domains, reply-to mismatches, and messages sent from an account that is normally used for a different purpose.
- Check the destination before opening it. On a computer, hover over a link; on a phone, press and hold to reveal the destination. Compare the complete hostname and path with the service you intended to use. A familiar brand name in the visible text or a reputable hosting domain does not prove that the destination is legitimate.
- Evaluate the sign-in context. A page that asks you to log in after an unexpected message may be an adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) relay. Look for an address you reached through a known bookmark or by typing it yourself, and avoid entering credentials into a page reached solely from the message.
- Treat attachments as untrusted until expected. Confirm that the sender actually intended to send the file and that the business reason makes sense. Do not enable macros or bypass browser, mail, or endpoint warnings merely to view a document.
- Verify consequential requests outside the message. Use a saved phone number, a separate work contact route, or another channel you already know is genuine. Do not use contact details supplied in the suspicious message. For impersonation scenarios involving family or colleagues, the FBI advises establishing a secret word or phrase that an impostor is unlikely to know.
- Report instead of replying. Use your organization’s established phishing-report button or forwarding process. Reporting gives defenders the original headers, links, and attachments needed to protect other people.
- Stop and escalate if you entered anything. If credentials, MFA codes, or approval details may have been submitted, follow the incident process immediately; do not wait to see whether an account behaves strangely.
How should I inspect links, attachments, and login pages?
Examine the complete transaction, not just the message. AI can make every visible element look plausible, while the technical destination or authentication flow remains malicious.
Read the destination, not the label
Links can contain a legitimate name in a path while the controlling domain belongs to someone else. Redirect chains can also send a safe-looking URL to a different destination later. If a message asks you to access a cloud document, delivery notice, payroll portal, or account alert, open a fresh browser window and navigate through a bookmark or a manually typed address instead.

Recognize a relayed login
In AiTM phishing, a victim is placed between the real login service and the attacker. The relay can collect a password, MFA secret, or session token while forwarding the interaction so that the page appears to work. A successful login does not prove safety. If the authentication request was unexpected, close it and start from a known entry point.
Use technical inspection as a second opinion
Security gateways can scan URLs at delivery and again at click time, follow redirects, and detonate attachments in an isolated environment. These controls help identify known malicious indicators and behavior, but they do not replace human verification of an unusual business request. A trusted service can be abused, and a newly generated site may have no reputation history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do trusted platforms make AI phishing harder to block?
Living-off-trusted-sites attacks abuse legitimate collaboration, storage, form, or redirect services. The service’s reputation may be good even though the specific page, file, or account is malicious. Blocking the entire platform would disrupt legitimate work, so defenders need URL reputation, content analysis, account and tenant context, and identity telemetry together.
The same issue applies to impersonation media. A cloned voice or realistic video can make a request feel personal, but it is still only a claim of identity. Require an independently initiated callback or another prearranged verification step before transferring money, changing account details, sharing secrets, or granting access.
How do organizations block AI-powered phishing at multiple layers?
AI improves the lure, but an attack still needs a delivery path and an action from the target. Use overlapping controls so that failure of one detector does not become account compromise.

| Layer | Control | What it addresses | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mail gateway | Filter known malicious indicators; enforce authentication and spoofing protections; flag external mail clearly. | Blocks or labels suspicious senders, domains, URLs, and attachments before delivery. | Reputable services and newly created infrastructure may have little negative reputation. |
| URL protection | Scan links at delivery and perform time-of-click verification, including redirect handling. | Catches destinations that change after a message is delivered. | Content can be benign at scan time or hidden behind a legitimate service. |
| Attachment analysis | Detonate files in an isolated environment and apply policy to risky types. | Identifies malicious behavior that static inspection misses. | Some attacks need the user to perform a business action rather than execute malware. |
| User reporting | Train people to identify and report suspicious activity; preserve the original message and headers. | Provides a detection signal for campaigns that bypass automated filters. | Reporting must be easy, and analysts must communicate outcomes so users continue to report. |
| Identity protection | Deploy phishing-resistant MFA and correlate sign-in, token, and session activity with email events. | Limits damage from stolen passwords and exposes unusual account use. | Coverage depends on service support and correct enrollment; monitoring remains necessary. |
| Security operations | Investigate the chain from message to click, login, token issuance, and post-login actions. | Finds affected accounts and related messages rather than treating each report in isolation. | Requires usable logs, retention, and staff who can review context. |
CISA recommends training that covers identifying and reporting suspicious activity, clear external-email indicators, and gateway filtering of known malicious indicators. Microsoft documents anti-phishing policies for spoofing and impersonation, URL scanning and time-of-click checks, attachment detonation, and correlation of email and identity signals. These are documented vendor capabilities, not independent comparative test results; availability and configuration vary by tenant, edition, and deployment.
What is a practical rollout plan for a small or midsize organization?
Implement the controls in an order that reduces immediate exposure while creating the reporting and investigation loop needed for later tuning.
- Define the reporting route. Provide one visible button or address for suspicious mail, tell staff what happens after they report, and ensure the process preserves headers, URLs, and attachments for analysts.
- Mark external messages. Add a prominent external-sender indicator and teach users that the label is a prompt to verify, not proof that a message is malicious.
- Apply gateway and URL policies. Block known malicious indicators, enable impersonation and spoofing protections, scan links at delivery and click time, and inspect redirects. Start with a monitor or quarantine mode where a policy could interrupt essential mail, then tune using reviewed false positives.
- Protect attachments. Detonate supported file types, quarantine suspicious results, and restrict risky active content according to the organization’s business needs.
- Enroll phishing-resistant MFA. Prioritize administrators, finance staff, and other high-impact accounts. A FIDO2 security key is one possible implementation, but verify that every account and service supports the required method before purchasing or mandating a specific device.
- Connect identity and mail telemetry. Make it possible to pivot from a reported message to link clicks, sign-ins, MFA events, token or session activity, mailbox rules, and other changes made after authentication.
- Exercise the process. Run authorized simulations or tabletop scenarios that test reporting, independent verification of payment changes, account containment, and communication. Measure time to report and investigate rather than rewarding users for simply clicking a training message.
- Review exceptions. Record why a legitimate sender, URL, or attachment was allowed, who approved the exception, and when it will be revisited. Permanent broad allowlists can create a trusted path for abuse.
Can phishing-resistant MFA stop an AI phishing attack?
It can substantially reduce account takeover after a lure, but it is not a complete phishing-control strategy. The Canadian Centre describes AiTM phishing as interception between the user and the login server, where credentials, MFA secrets, and tokens can be captured, and recommends phishing-resistant MFA by default.
Methods that bind authentication to the legitimate origin, such as a supported FIDO2 security key, are designed to resist credential relay better than passwords or codes typed into a fake page. Compatibility is service-specific: check the account provider’s authentication documentation, enrollment requirements, recovery path, and support for the exact protocol before deployment.
Keep monitoring even after deployment. A stolen session token, a legacy application that still accepts passwords, an unprotected service account, or a compromised recovery channel can leave gaps. Correlate unusual sign-ins and token use with the original message, and revoke sessions or reset credentials through the incident process when exposure is suspected.

How should security teams use automated phishing triage?
Automation can reduce the queue, extract indicators, group similar reports, and route urgent cases to analysts. Microsoft describes a Phishing Triage Agent that uses large-language-model analysis to classify user reports as threats or false positives, provide rationale, and support analyst workflows.
That description establishes a vendor-stated capability, not universal accuracy or independent effectiveness. Keep a human decision point for ambiguous messages, high-impact accounts, payment requests, and cases where the model’s rationale conflicts with identity or endpoint evidence. Log the original report, extracted indicators, model result, analyst decision, and final disposition so you can measure false negatives and false positives.
When comparing triage products or services, ask whether they retain headers and attachments, show the evidence behind a verdict, correlate mail with identity events, support analyst overrides, and expose confidence and audit logs. Do not treat a fluent automated explanation as proof that a message is safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do after clicking an AI-phishing link?
Act as though exposure is possible until the organization’s response process establishes otherwise. Speed matters because a relay can capture authentication material during the login rather than leaving obvious malware behind.
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not enter additional credentials, approve an unexpected MFA request, download more files, or contact the sender through the same message.
- Report the original message immediately. Include the message, destination, time of click, and any attachment or prompt you saw. Do not delete the evidence unless instructed.
- Contact the service desk or security team through a known channel. Explain exactly what you entered, including whether a password, MFA code, recovery detail, or payment information was involved.
- Contain the account under guidance. The response team may revoke sessions and tokens, reset credentials, disable forwarding rules, remove malicious mailbox changes, or require re-enrollment of MFA. Use the organization’s approved process rather than improvising changes that could destroy evidence.
- Review activity beyond the mailbox. Investigate sign-ins, new devices, token use, administrative changes, sent mail, file access, and financial actions that occurred after the interaction.
- Notify affected parties. If the account sent messages, changed payment details, or exposed customer or employee data, follow the organization’s breach and fraud-notification procedures.
How should I compare phishing defenses?
There is no neutral ranking in the cited material. Compare controls against the attack paths your organization actually has, and require evidence for each claimed capability.

What does a complete detection decision look like?
Imagine a finance employee receives a polished message requesting a supplier bank-account change and linking to a familiar document service. The correct decision is not based on the grammar or the service’s reputation. The employee reports the message, calls the supplier using a saved number, and waits for confirmation. The gateway and URL controls preserve and inspect the message; identity monitoring checks whether anyone followed the link; phishing-resistant MFA limits the value of a stolen password; and analysts search for the same sender, destination, or sign-in pattern across the organization.
That sequence illustrates the central principle: content clues are useful signals, but identity, destination, requested action, independent verification, and authentication telemetry provide stronger evidence. AI makes the lure more convincing; it does not remove the attacker’s need to deliver a message and persuade someone to take an action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI-written message be legitimate?
Yes. Employees and legitimate services may use generative tools for drafting or translation, so AI-like wording is not itself evidence of fraud. Apply the same sender, destination, action, and independent-verification checks to any unexpected request.
Should I block every email that uses a trusted cloud service?
No. Broadly blocking a legitimate collaboration or storage service can stop essential work and still miss abuse on another service. Use reputation, URL and content analysis, tenant context, and identity signals, then quarantine or investigate the specific message or account.
What information should I preserve when reporting a suspected phish?
Keep the original message with its headers, every link, attachments, the time you received and opened it, and any sign-in or MFA prompt. Those details let responders connect the report to other deliveries and identity events.
Are hardware security keys compatible with every login?
No. Support depends on the account provider, application, browser, device, and recovery configuration. Check the service’s authentication documentation and test enrollment and account recovery before standardizing on a key.
