You cannot reliably identify an AI-generated scam by grammar, spelling, or production quality. Generative AI now lets criminals write polished, personalized messages, clone voices, fabricate video, and build convincing websites. The dependable test is independent verification: inspect the real sender and destination, question the context and requested action, then confirm the person through a channel you already trust before clicking, paying, sharing credentials, or acting on an urgent instruction.
This guide gives you a repeatable method for email, text, voice, images, and video; explains what visual and audio clues can (and cannot) tell you; and sets out the recovery steps if you clicked or replied.
Why is AI-generated phishing harder to recognize?
Traditional phishing often contained awkward wording, obvious spelling mistakes, or generic greetings. Generative AI removes many of those clues. It can produce fluent copy in multiple languages, tailor a message to a specific job or relationship, create a matching fraudulent website, and scale thousands of variations quickly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe FBI said in 2025 that AI-generated content had advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify. The agency describes spoofing as disguising an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL so it appears trusted. A familiar display name, a perfect logo, or an error-free paragraph therefore proves nothing.

Judge the message by four things instead:
- Identity: Is the account, phone number, or site genuinely controlled by the person or organization named?
- Context: Does the timing and subject fit an existing conversation and the sender’s normal behavior?
- Destination: Where will a link, attachment, QR code, or callback actually take you?
- Requested action: Is it asking for money, credentials, an MFA code, secrecy, or an unusual account change?
One weak clue should not overrule a strong one. A message can have an authentic-looking address and still come from a compromised account, and a legitimate message can contain an unusual typo. Verification outside the message is the deciding control.
How can I inspect a suspicious email or text before acting?
Use this sequence before opening an attachment, following a link, replying, or making a payment. If any check fails, stop and verify through a separate trusted route.
- Pause the pressure. Urgency, fear, secrecy, threats of account closure, and claims of unusual authority are designed to shorten your decision time. Do not let a countdown or a request to keep the matter confidential prevent a check.
- Expand the sender details. Look at the complete address and the reply-to address, not just the display name. Compare the domain character by character with the known organization. Watch for added words, substituted letters, extra hyphens, unusual country-code endings, and look-alike characters. A message that appears to come from a colleague may use a different mailbox or route replies elsewhere.
- Inspect every destination. Hover over a link on a computer or press and hold it on a phone to preview the destination without opening it. Read the complete domain and path. Be cautious with shortened links, unexpected cloud-storage pages, QR codes, and domains that do not match the organization you are supposedly contacting. Do not use the phone number or URL supplied by a suspicious message; find contact details independently.
- Classify attachments before opening them. Unexpected documents, archives, executable files, macro-enabled files, and HTML files that ask you to sign in deserve special scrutiny. Confirm that the sender intended to send the file through a known channel. If your organization provides a safe file-isolation or preview service, use it rather than downloading directly.
- Examine the requested action. Treat unsolicited requests for passwords, MFA codes, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, payroll changes, bank-detail changes, or account recovery as high risk. The FBI notes that companies generally do not ask for usernames or passwords in an unsolicited message.
- Compare with normal behavior. Check the prior conversation, signature, language, timing, and usual payment or approval process. A polished message that suddenly changes the process is still suspicious.
- Verify independently, then report. Call a known number, start a new chat with a saved contact, ask in person, or use a second trusted colleague. Do not reply to the suspicious thread for verification. Afterward, use your organization’s phishing-report mechanism and preserve the original message if an investigation may be needed.
Which signals deserve an immediate stop?
| Signal | Why it matters | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Urgency plus secrecy | It prevents a second opinion and increases the chance of an impulsive action. | Pause and require confirmation through an existing, trusted channel. |
| Display name matches, address does not | Display names are easy to spoof. | Inspect the full address and compare the domain exactly. |
| Unexpected sign-in or payment page | The destination may harvest credentials or payment data. | Open the organization’s known app or type its address yourself. |
| Request for an MFA code | The code can complete an attacker’s login even when your password is correct. | Never disclose the code; reject the sign-in and contact support independently. |
| New bank, payroll, or vendor details | Changing destination details is a common way to divert funds. | Use the established approval and callback process, with a second person involved. |
How do I verify a request from my boss, bank, family member, or a government official?
Match the verification method to the relationship, but never use contact information supplied by the suspect message or call. Start a new conversation with a saved number, a known app, an existing chat thread, or an in-person check.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Impersonated source | Independent verification | Stop signs |
|---|---|---|
| Manager or executive | Call the manager’s saved number or ask face to face. Confirm the request in the normal purchasing or approval system and involve another authorized colleague. | “Keep this secret,” bypassing approval, buying gift cards, sending a wire, or changing payroll details. |
| Bank or payment provider | Hang up and call the number on your card, statement, or the institution’s official site. Open the official app rather than a link in the message. | Requests for a one-time code, full password, remote access, or transfer to a “safe” account. |
| Family member or friend | Call the person’s known number or ask a private context question that an impersonator is unlikely to know. A family secret phrase can help with unexpected crisis calls. | Emergency claims, isolation from other relatives, pressure to pay immediately, or refusal to speak normally. |
| Government office | Find the agency’s published contact details independently and ask whether the notice is genuine. Check your official account or mailed correspondence. | Threats of arrest, demands for gift cards or cryptocurrency, or instructions to move money to protect it. |
| Supplier or coworker | Use the existing vendor record, procurement portal, or a previously known phone number. Have a second person confirm any changed account details. | New bank information, an unusual file-sharing service, or a sudden request outside the normal workflow. |
Verification should confirm both who is asking and what they are asking you to do. A real employee’s account may be compromised, so a familiar address alone is not sufficient.

How can I spot a deepfake image or video?
Visual artifacts are useful prompts to investigate, not proof of fraud. High-quality synthetic media can avoid obvious defects, while compression, poor lighting, and ordinary camera artifacts can make genuine footage look strange.
What visual clues should I check?
- Hands or feet with distorted anatomy, fused fingers, or impossible joints.
- Teeth, eyes, ears, or facial features that change shape between frames or do not align naturally.
- Hair, jewelry, glasses, and clothing edges that shimmer, melt, or merge with the background.
- Lighting and shadows that disagree with one another, or reflections that do not match the scene.
- Background geometry, text, logos, or watermarks that warp or change when the camera moves.
- Unnatural head movement, frozen expressions, excessive smoothing, or video lag around the face.
- Lip movement that does not match the spoken words, especially on consonants.
How should I verify a person in live or recorded video?
- Stop the transaction or disclosure while you check. Do not assume that a live video call is automatically authentic.
- Contact the person through a different channel you already trust. Use a saved number or start a new call; do not switch to a link or number provided during the suspicious session.
- Ask a context question about a shared event, current location, or detail that is not public. Do not rely on a question whose answer is visible on social media.
- Compare the request with the person’s normal behavior and authority. An executive who appears on camera can still be asking for something outside company policy.
- Preserve the recording, message headers, and surrounding conversation if a fraud report or investigation may be required.
For a high-value payment, account recovery, or identity decision, require a second control such as an approval workflow, a callback, or an in-person check. Visual inspection should never be the only control.
How can I tell whether a voice call is AI-cloned?
Listen for timing and behavior rather than expecting a single telltale sound. A synthetic or altered voice may have unusual cadence, abrupt pauses, flat emotion, odd word choices, or a mismatch between the speaker’s tone and the claimed emergency. Those clues are not conclusive: genuine calls can sound distorted, and modern cloning can sound natural.
Hang up and call the person’s known number yourself. If the caller claims to be a bank, employer, agency, or service provider, use the number on a card, statement, official site, or existing contract. Never provide an MFA code, password, remote-access permission, or payment solely because a familiar voice requested it.

A private family phrase can help with an unexpected crisis call, but it only works if the phrase is kept secret and changed when necessary. Do not publish it in social posts or share it in a group where an impersonator could obtain it.
Are AI-detection tools reliable enough to prove a message or deepfake is real?
No. Detectors can provide an advisory signal, but there is no authoritative general consumer accuracy percentage for identifying AI-written phishing or deepfakes. Attackers can alter files, re-record audio, crop video, or generate new versions that evade a particular detector. Identity confirmation through a trusted channel remains decisive.
When assessing a detection service or an internal workflow, compare these capabilities:
| Capability | Questions to ask | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Independent verification | Does the process let a user confirm the person or organization through a separate channel? | No detector can establish that the person making a request is authorized. |
| Phishing and spoof resistance | Can it expose look-alike domains, reply-to mismatches, redirects, and impersonated sender names? | A new domain or compromised legitimate account may evade reputation checks. |
| Header and URL inspection | Can analysts review authentication results, routing, complete URLs, and attachment behavior? | Technical indicators still require context and can be forged or incomplete. |
| Media provenance and artifact analysis | Can it examine file history, encoding, frame consistency, and signs of manipulation? | Missing provenance is not proof of fabrication, and provenance does not prove the speaker’s identity. |
| Incident-response integration | Can a finding trigger message removal, session revocation, blocking, and case tracking? | A score without a response path leaves the exposure in place. |
| Privacy and retention | What happens to uploaded messages, voices, faces, and documents, and how long are they retained? | Sending sensitive media to an external service can create a separate privacy risk. |
| Accessibility and update quality | Can people with different devices and abilities use it, and how often are detection rules updated? | Static signatures lose value as file and message-generation methods change. |
Use tools to prioritize human review and gather evidence, not to grant permission to pay, log in, or disclose information. A low-risk message can still be malicious, and a high detector score should lead to verification rather than an automatic accusation.

What should I do if I clicked a link, opened an attachment, or replied?
Act quickly, but do not panic or conceal the event. The right response depends on what you did and what information was exposed.
Immediate steps for an individual
- Stop interacting. Close the page or call, do not enter additional information, and do not approve an MFA prompt you did not initiate.
- Separate a potentially infected device. Disconnect it from sensitive networks, such as a work VPN or home file share, while leaving it available for your security team or provider to examine. Do not wipe it before receiving guidance if an investigation may be needed.
- Use a clean device. From a device you trust, change any exposed password. Change reused passwords on other services, and use unique passwords.
- Revoke suspicious access. Review recent sign-ins, active sessions, connected applications, forwarding rules, and recovery details. Sign out unknown sessions and remove unauthorized mailbox rules or applications.
- Report the incident. Tell your security team, email provider, or service immediately and preserve the original message, headers, attachment, URL, screenshots, and timeline.
- Protect money and identity. If you sent funds or identity information, contact the bank or service through its official channel, ask what recall or account-protection actions are available, and report fraud to the relevant authority.
If you only opened a message and did not click, open a file, enter credentials, or respond, report it and monitor the account. Do not assume that a warning banner or a failed page means no information was exposed; let your security team assess logs.
How does an organization investigate a suspected phishing event?
Microsoft’s phishing investigation playbook uses six stages. Adapt the sequence to your systems and preserve evidence while containment proceeds.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Identify and confirm the message. Determine whether it is malicious, spoofed, or a legitimate message that was misreported. Capture headers, URLs, attachments, and message IDs.
- Scope affected users. Search for delivery across mailboxes, forwarding, replies, and related domains or campaigns.
- Assess interaction. Determine who clicked, opened an attachment, submitted credentials, approved an MFA prompt, or downloaded a file.
- Find downstream activity. Check sign-ins, token use, mailbox-rule changes, new applications, privilege changes, and endpoint activity after the interaction.
- Contain the threat. Remove messages, reset affected accounts, revoke sessions and tokens, block malicious indicators, isolate endpoints, and stop unauthorized payment or account changes.
- Recover and improve. Re-enable access with MFA, restore safe settings, tune filtering and detections, notify affected people, and update the response playbook based on what happened.
How can I prevent AI phishing and deepfake fraud?
Controls for individuals
- Enable multifactor authentication, preferably with a method resistant to phishing, and never give an MFA code to someone who contacts you.
- Use a password manager or another method that prevents reuse and makes look-alike login pages less effective.
- Keep operating systems, browsers, email apps, and security software current.
- Limit public exposure of voice recordings, high-resolution face images, personal schedules, and family relationships where practical. Public material gives impersonators more context to copy.
- Agree on a callback routine for financial or account changes. For family emergencies, keep a private verification phrase.
- Use the official app or a manually typed address instead of links in unexpected messages.
Controls for organizations
- Mark external mail clearly and configure gateway filtering for spoofing, suspicious URLs, and risky attachment types.
- Provide a simple, visible reporting button and train people to report near misses without blame.
- Require independent approval and callback verification for payments, payroll changes, new suppliers, and password or MFA resets.
- Protect administrator and financial accounts with strong MFA, least privilege, separate approval roles, and monitored sign-ins.
- Log mailbox-rule changes, token use, unusual locations, mass forwarding, and endpoint execution so investigators can trace activity.
- Review filters, training examples, and response playbooks as file-based and AI-assisted attack methods change.
Security awareness should teach people to verify context and identity, not to hunt for a magic typo or a single deepfake artifact. The goal is to make a second trusted check routine even when the message or media looks flawless.
What do recent authorities report about AI-enabled fraud?
The FBI’s 2025 guidance warns that generative AI is being used for believable text, fraudulent websites, images, cloned voices, and videos, and that visual inspection alone is unreliable. FinCEN reported in 2024 that suspicious activity involving deepfake media was increasing, particularly fraudulent identity documents used to bypass identity verification and authentication.

Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 reported that its controls thwarted USD 4 billion in fraudulent transactions and rejected 49,000 bogus partner-enrollment attempts. Those figures describe Microsoft’s observed defensive activity, not the probability that a consumer can detect a particular message or video. No general consumer detection-success rate was established by an authoritative source, so treat percentage claims without a clearly defined study, sample, and test conditions skeptically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a phishing email come from a real, familiar account?
Yes. An attacker may compromise a colleague’s mailbox or messaging account and use its genuine history and address. Verify an unusual request outside the account, and ask the organization to investigate sign-ins and forwarding rules rather than relying on the sender field.
Do AI-generated messages contain special metadata that proves they are fake?
Not reliably. Metadata may be absent, stripped by a service, or changed when a file is edited or re-encoded. Treat metadata as supporting evidence only and base the decision on independent identity and request verification.
What should I give my bank after a fraudulent transfer?
Provide the transaction reference, amount, recipient details, date and time, the message or call record, and the account used. Ask whether the payment can be recalled or frozen, then follow the bank’s documented fraud process and keep the case number.
Can a deepfake detector prove that a video is authentic?
No. A detector can miss a sophisticated manipulation or flag a genuine recording altered by compression. For consequential decisions, combine any technical result with a trusted callback, a context check, and the organization’s approval controls.
