Design a production actor architecture by giving each actor one clear ownership boundary, a versioned message protocol, and an explicit failure policy. Let agent actors handle interpretation and tool selection, while durable entity actors enforce business invariants. Put a supervisor or durable workflow above workers, assume at-least-once delivery, and make retries, idempotency, context limits, authorization, and tracing part of the design rather than afterthoughts. Use a deterministic workflow for known steps; use autonomous delegation only when the model genuinely needs to choose specialists or iterate. This structure lets an AI system recover from crashes, scale concurrent work, and remain auditable without pretending that actors solve model errors or distributed transactions by themselves.
What is an actor, and why does it fit production AI agents?
An actor is an isolated unit of state and behavior with an identity and a mailbox. It receives one message at a time, updates its private state, and sends messages to other actors. The sender and receiver do not share a mutable call stack; as Akka’s actor guide puts it, “Sending a message does not transfer the thread of execution from the sender to the destination.” That boundary makes concurrent work explicit and limits the places where state can be changed.
For an AI system, an actor can represent a conversation, tenant, job, tool adapter, specialist agent, order, or other domain entity. The useful unit is not “anything that calls a model.” It is a component that owns state, has a protocol, and can be scheduled, observed, restarted, or moved independently. A conversation actor might hold a short-lived task state; an order actor might own an order’s lifecycle for months. Both use messages, but their durability and authorization requirements differ.
Actors do not guarantee correct answers, prevent prompt injection, or turn side effects into transactions. They provide isolation and message-oriented concurrency. Correctness still comes from validation, authorization, idempotency, explicit compensation, evaluation, and policies for every failure mode.

How should I choose actor boundaries?
Choose a boundary where one component owns state and a stable protocol, needs independent concurrency, or must fail and scale independently. Avoid creating an actor for every function call; excessive fragmentation adds hops, serialization, and operational overhead.
Start with ownership, not model capability
- Conversation actors: Own a session’s task identity, turn state, approvals, and compacted context. They should not own shared account balances or inventory.
- Tenant actors: Enforce tenant-level quotas, policy, and routing. Keep tenant identity on every message so authorization cannot depend on ambient process state.
- Job or workflow actors: Track a durable unit of work, its step results, deadlines, retries, and compensation status.
- Domain-entity actors: Own invariants such as balances, permissions, orders, or reservations. They accept validated commands and emit state changes; an LLM never mutates their state directly.
- Tool-adapter actors: Encapsulate a provider’s credentials, rate limits, request format, and response normalization. This prevents provider-specific failures from leaking into every agent.
- Specialist-agent actors: Perform a narrow reasoning task with a typed input and output contract. They should not silently change shared business state.
Define a message contract before writing prompts
Every command, event, and reply should have a versioned schema. Include an actor or tenant identity, a correlation ID, a deadline, an idempotency key, and provenance describing who or what supplied the data. Distinguish commands (“reserve inventory”) from events (“inventory reserved”) and replies (“reservation rejected”) so a retry cannot be mistaken for a new business request.
Version messages compatibly: readers should tolerate fields added by newer senders, and senders should not depend on fields that older readers cannot understand. Reject malformed or unauthorized messages at the boundary, before a model call. Keep payloads small and pass references to large documents or artifacts rather than copying them through every mailbox.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould an agent actor own business state?
No. Separate probabilistic reasoning from deterministic state. An agent actor can interpret a goal, select a tool, and propose a command. A durable entity actor or transactional service must validate that command and apply the invariant.
A safe command path
- The conversation or agent actor receives a user goal and creates a correlation ID and deadline.
- The model produces a structured proposal, such as a payment request or permission change.
- A policy layer validates the schema, actor identity, tenant scope, limits, and required approval. Structured output constrains shape but does not prove that the values are safe or true.
- The proposal becomes a typed command sent to the owning entity actor.
- The entity actor checks its current state, idempotency key, and authorization, then commits an event or rejects the command.
- The entity emits an outcome event. The agent actor may explain the result, request clarification, or continue a workflow, but it cannot bypass the entity.
This pattern keeps balances, orders, permissions, and other invariants deterministic even when a model hallucinates, repeats a tool call, or receives adversarial instructions.
When should I use a workflow, a request-based agent, or an autonomous agent?
Use a request-based agent for a bounded interaction, a workflow when the sequence is known in code, and an autonomous agent when the model must decide what to consult, whom to delegate to, or whether to iterate. The choice is about who controls sequencing, not about how many models you call.

| Request-based agent | The application handles one bounded request and response. | Short support answers, extraction, or a single tool-assisted turn. | Timeout, output validation, tool allow-list, and a clear response deadline. |
| Deterministic workflow | Code defines the order, branches, retries, and compensation. | Known business processes with independent steps. | Durable step state, retry limits, idempotency, deadlines, and compensation for non-transactional effects. |
| Autonomous agent | The model chooses tools, specialists, or additional iterations within policy. | Open-ended investigation, planning, or delegation where the path is not known in advance. | Persisted task identity and progress, iteration and tool-call caps, budget, approval gates, and supervisor-enforced timeouts. |
Use autonomy inside a bounded envelope
Autonomy should be a capability of a supervised task, not an untracked loop. Persist the task ID, current objective, completed actions, pending approvals, and budget. Set maximum iterations, tool calls, wall-clock time, and model spend. If the agent reaches a limit, return a resumable state or escalate to a human instead of silently continuing.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I supervise workers and recover from crashes?
Put a supervisor above workers. The supervisor selects workers, controls concurrency, applies retry and timeout policies, and records outcomes. A parent should own the decision to restart, stop, or escalate a failed child; this is the core of actor supervision.
Classify failures before choosing a reaction
- Transient provider failure: Retry with exponential backoff and jitter, bounded by a deadline and attempt count.
- Rate limit: Honor the provider’s delay signal, reduce concurrency, and apply queue backpressure.
- Malformed model output: Reject and request a constrained repair or escalate; do not apply a guessed command.
- Authorization failure: Stop the operation and record the decision. Retrying cannot create permission.
- Deterministic code defect: Stop or quarantine the worker, alert operators, and preserve the input for replay.
- Unknown failure: Capture the stack, message metadata, and state version, then escalate rather than endlessly restarting.
A restart is safe only when the actor can reconstruct state or deliberately discard it. Durable entities commonly recover from an event log or snapshot; ephemeral conversation workers may be restarted with a persisted task record. Never assume a restart undoes an external email, payment, deployment, or data mutation.
How do I handle duplicate messages and partial side effects?
Design for at-least-once delivery unless your runtime explicitly provides stronger semantics for a particular path. A crash after an external call but before recording its result can cause the same message to be delivered again. Consumers must therefore be idempotent.
Idempotency checklist
- Require an idempotency key for every command that can change external state.
- Store the key and outcome at the state owner before acknowledging completion.
- Make retries return the recorded outcome instead of performing the side effect again.
- Use a deduplication window appropriate to the business operation; long-lived entities may need durable deduplication.
- Attach correlation IDs so a duplicate can be distinguished from a legitimate new request.
For non-transactional effects, use a saga-style compensation plan. If a workflow reserves stock, charges a card, and creates a shipment, each action needs a compensating action or a human-reconciliation path. Compensation is not the same as rollback: an already-sent message cannot be unsent, and a refund may require a separate approval.
Protect the mailbox and downstream services
Bounded mailboxes or queues prevent an overloaded actor from consuming unlimited memory. Backpressure should propagate to producers, or the system should shed low-priority work explicitly. Circuit breakers stop calls to an unhealthy provider, while dead-letter handling preserves messages that exceeded retry policy for inspection and replay. Queue depth, mailbox age, and dead-letter volume are early indicators that capacity or a dependency is failing.

How should context and memory work in an actor-based agent?
Keep the model context focused and store durable memory outside it. A session actor can maintain the current conversation summary, while long-term preferences, documents, and audit records live in durable stores with access control.
Use three distinct memory scopes
- Turn context: The messages and tool results needed for the current decision. Remove irrelevant history before each model call.
- Session memory: A compact summary, task state, and approved facts for one conversation or job.
- Long-term memory: Durable records such as preferences or past outcomes, retrieved selectively and filtered by tenant and authorization.
Compact long sessions by summarizing completed work and retaining decisions, unresolved questions, identifiers, and evidence links. Do not let a summary silently become authoritative business state; store authoritative facts in the owning entity. Cap tool calls and iterations, because model calls add latency and token cost even when the final answer is short.
What should I observe and audit?
Trace the complete causal path from an incoming request to the final response or side effect. A useful trace includes actor message IDs, correlation and idempotency keys, state versions, model and tool calls, retries, timeouts, approvals, and emitted events.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Operational metrics to collect
- Queue depth and mailbox age by actor type and tenant.
- Success, failure, retry, cancellation, escalation, and dead-letter rates.
- Model latency, tool latency, end-to-end latency, and timeout counts.
- Token usage and cost by model, workflow, tenant, and outcome.
- State-transition failures, duplicate-command rate, and compensation volume.
- Human-approval wait time and the percentage of tasks requiring intervention.
Keep payload logging proportional to sensitivity. Redact secrets and personal data, separate audit records from debugging logs, and make retention policies explicit. An audit trail should answer who requested an action, which policy allowed it, which model and tools were used, what state changed, and whether a human approved a high-impact step.
How do I secure actor and tool boundaries?
Authenticate every message and authorize actions using the actor’s identity and tenant, not merely the process that happens to execute it. Give each tool the minimum permissions required for its task and isolate provider credentials from prompts and model-visible text.
Apply defense in depth
- Verify message signatures or transport identity at ingress.
- Check tenant, actor role, resource scope, and approval status before dispatching a command.
- Validate structured model output against a strict schema and business rules.
- Treat retrieved documents and tool results as untrusted input; they may contain prompt-injection instructions.
- Require explicit human approval for irreversible, high-value, regulated, or externally visible actions.
- Record the policy decision and the exact command that was approved.
Do not expose internal state, credentials, or another tenant’s context merely because an agent requested it. A valid JSON response can still contain a wrong account, unsafe destination, or fabricated fact, so semantic checks remain mandatory.

Which runtime shape is appropriate?
Choose a runtime according to who owns deployment and how much actor-native durability you need. Compare candidates on sequencing, durable state and recovery, supervision, delivery guarantees, backpressure, idempotency, model and tool routing, memory controls, observability, deployment ownership, multi-region behavior, cost, governance, and evaluation support.
| Runtime approach | Strengths | Trade-offs and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Actor-native platform such as Akka SDK | Actors, clustering, sharding, durable entities, event sourcing, views, workflows, streams, timers, endpoints, and supervision are designed as one operating model. | Strong fit when durable state, actor identity, and cluster operation are central. The team still owns model policies, evaluation, authorization, and application-specific recovery. |
| Managed Agents API harness | Hosted sessions, environments, tool handlers, events, streaming, webhooks, and recovery reduce lifecycle work in the application. | Useful when hosted orchestration is preferred. Verify deployment boundaries, data retention, governance, and integration limits before moving critical state into the harness. |
| In-process Agents SDK | The application controls deployment, storage, approvals, and runtime integration while using agent abstractions. | Best when existing infrastructure and compliance requirements demand application ownership. The team must implement durable execution, observability, and recovery deliberately. |
These approaches can be combined: a durable actor or workflow can supervise model calls through an application SDK, while a managed service handles a bounded interaction. Keep the business entity and audit source of truth in the system whose recovery and governance you control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I scale across workers, tenants, and regions?
Scale by partitioning actors according to identity and access patterns. Shard durable entities by a stable key such as tenant or order ID, route all commands for one key consistently, and keep hot entities from becoming single-actor bottlenecks.
Capacity decisions
- Limit concurrent model calls separately from ordinary message processing; model providers often become the bottleneck.
- Give tenants quotas and fair scheduling so one noisy tenant cannot exhaust the cluster.
- Separate interactive queues from batch queues and assign distinct deadlines.
- Use regional placement for data residency and latency, but define what happens when a region is unavailable.
- Design cross-region commands as explicit messages with conflict policy; do not assume two active regions can safely mutate the same invariant without coordination.
Measure mailbox age and provider latency while load testing. More actors do not help if every actor waits on one rate-limited model endpoint or a serialized database transaction.
What is a practical implementation sequence?
Build the smallest durable slice first, then add autonomy only after its controls work under failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose one bounded use case. Define the user outcome, allowed tools, irreversible actions, latency target, and escalation path.
- Map ownership. Draw conversation, workflow, tool, tenant, and domain-entity boundaries. Assign one authoritative owner to each mutable fact.
- Write typed protocols. Add versions, correlation IDs, deadlines, idempotency keys, provenance, and authorization fields to commands and events.
- Implement deterministic state owners. Validate commands, persist state or events, deduplicate retries, and expose read views for agents.
- Add a supervised worker. Enforce concurrency, timeout, retry, circuit-breaker, and dead-letter policies in one place.
- Constrain the model. Use focused context, strict tool schemas, iteration and token budgets, and approval gates for high-impact actions.
- Instrument before scaling. Trace messages, model calls, tool calls, state transitions, and approvals; publish queue, latency, cost, and failure metrics.
- Replay and inject faults. Re-run recorded tasks, kill workers, delay providers, duplicate messages, return malformed outputs, and verify recovery and compensation.
- Expand gradually. Add parallel branches or autonomous delegation only when quality, cost, security, and recovery measurements meet explicit thresholds.
What commonly goes wrong?
Making every agent call every other agent
Ad-hoc agent-to-agent calls create hidden sequencing, circular waits, and poor auditability. Route work through a supervisor or durable workflow that owns deadlines, retries, and outcomes.

Putting shared mutable state in prompts
Prompt text is not a transaction boundary. Keep authoritative state in an entity actor or database, and give the model only the fields needed for its decision.
Retrying side effects blindly
Retries without idempotency can charge, email, or provision twice. Require keys, record outcomes, and use compensation or reconciliation when an external system cannot participate in a transaction.
Allowing unbounded autonomy
An agent that can loop forever can exhaust tokens, provider quotas, or time. Bound iterations, tools, wall-clock time, and spend, then persist a resumable checkpoint.

Logging only the final answer
A final response cannot explain a duplicate charge or a missing approval. Trace the messages, model decisions, tool results, policy checks, and state transitions that produced it.
Assuming structured output is trustworthy
Schema-valid output may still target the wrong resource or contain a fabricated value. Apply authorization, business-rule validation, provenance checks, and human approval where impact warrants it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one actor process multiple conversations at once?
A single actor processes its mailbox serially, so it should not own unrelated conversations if one slow task would block them all. Use one actor per conversation or job, then shard those identities across workers; reserve a shared actor for state that truly requires serialized access.
How do actor systems handle a model provider outage?
The supervisor should stop or defer new calls through a circuit breaker, honor provider retry guidance, and keep task state durable. Queued work can resume after recovery, while expired deadlines should move to an explicit cancellation or human-reconciliation path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I use event sourcing for every agent?
No. Event sourcing is valuable for durable entities and regulated or reconstructable workflows, but short-lived conversational actors may need only a task record and compacted context. Choose the persistence method based on recovery, audit, and replay requirements.
How can I test an autonomous agent safely?
Run it against recorded tasks with tools replaced by deterministic fakes, then inject duplicate messages, delayed responses, malformed outputs, and revoked permissions. Compare not only answer quality but also tool selection, policy decisions, cost, latency, and whether forbidden side effects were attempted.
