You can deploy a self-hosted project-management app with Docker Compose by using that app’s current official Compose files, environment template, database requirements and storage paths. Compose then starts and manages the app’s containers—often the web application, database, cache, migration job and reverse proxy—as one stack. It does not make different applications interchangeable: service names, database versions, ports, secrets, health checks and production requirements differ. Choose the application first, follow its supported installation path, replace all sample credentials, persist every stateful directory and test backups before exposing the service to users.

What does a Docker Compose deployment actually provide?

Docker describes Compose as “a tool for defining and running multi-container applications.” A Compose YAML file declares services, networks and volumes, while the Compose CLI starts, stops, rebuilds and inspects those components. The result is a repeatable deployment rather than a single container that happens to contain everything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For project-management software, the stack commonly includes an application server and a database. Some products add a Redis cache, a migration runner, a separate API, a web frontend or a reverse proxy. Those differences matter: a Compose file written for one product cannot safely be adapted by changing an image name.

  • Application service: serves the user interface and business logic.
  • Database service: stores projects, users, tasks and configuration.
  • Cache or queue service: handles sessions, jobs or background work when the app requires it.
  • Migration or initialization service: creates or upgrades the schema before the application starts.
  • Web or proxy service: may provide static files, routing or TLS termination.

Read the selected app’s installation page before writing YAML. The official Docker Compose documentation explains the Compose model, but only the application vendor can define the correct image tags, environment variables, database version, ports and volume paths for its product.

Which project-management app should you choose before creating the stack?

Choose according to license, feature boundaries, maintenance activity, documented architecture and operational requirements—not according to which example Compose file looks shortest. The following products demonstrate why there is no universal project-management Compose template.

App and documentation Documented service arrangement License or feature note Published host guidance
Orangescrum Community Edition Application, PostgreSQL and web server in its Compose path. Community Edition is AGPL-3.0. Its product page separates community features from paid cloud and enterprise features. Use the requirements and Compose file supplied on its download and installation material.
Nosdesk Application container, PostgreSQL and Redis. License details are not stated in the cited installation page. Docker Engine 24 or newer; the guide gives 2 vCPUs and 2 GB RAM as a starting point.
TaskView Database, migration runner, API server and web app. License details are not stated in the cited installation page. Follow its documented installation sequence and required secrets rather than substituting another app’s values.
Truetask Use the services and paths in its current Docker/server guide. License details are not stated in the cited installation page. Its listed requirement is 1 GB RAM minimum and 2 GB recommended for production.

These figures are vendor-specific, not a general Docker recommendation. Also compare whether features you need—such as time tracking, integrations, permissions or reporting—are in the self-hosted edition or reserved for a paid offering. Confirm the project’s update policy, issue tracker and recovery instructions before committing important work to it.

What host and software prerequisites are needed?

Use a local workstation, home server or VPS only when it meets the selected application’s requirements and can remain available to your users. There is no single minimum specification for all Compose-based project-management apps.

  • Operating system: use an OS supported by both Docker Engine and the application’s guide.
  • CPU and memory: Nosdesk documents 2 vCPUs and 2 GB RAM as a starting point; Truetask lists 1 GB RAM minimum and 2 GB recommended for production. Treat each number as applying only to that product.
  • Storage: reserve space for database growth, uploaded files, logs, image layers and backups. A small initial footprint can grow rapidly when users attach documents.
  • Network: assign a stable hostname or IP. Public deployments need DNS and the TLS arrangement required by the app.
  • Docker: install a current Docker Engine and the Compose plugin by following Docker’s host-specific instructions. Do not assume that a system package’s old docker-compose binary satisfies a guide that expects the newer docker compose plugin.

Before proceeding, record the app’s required database major version, exposed port, mandatory environment variables, supported image tag and any filesystem permissions it expects. A deployment that starts with the wrong database version can fail during migrations or, worse, leave a partially upgraded data directory.

How do you install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin?

Use the installation method documented for your host operating system in Docker’s official documentation. The Compose guide defines the YAML model and commands, while the host installation pages supply repository, package and post-install steps.

  1. Install Docker Engine for the host OS and enable its service to start on boot.
  2. Install the Compose plugin supplied for that Docker distribution.
  3. Verify both components from a shell:
docker --version
docker compose version

The commands should return versions without a permission error. If your user cannot access the Docker socket, follow the host guide’s permission instructions or run administrative commands as required by that OS. Avoid mixing an old standalone Compose binary with a vendor guide written for the plugin; syntax and behavior can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you create the application directory and obtain the right Compose files?

Work in a dedicated directory owned by the operator account. Download or copy only the Compose file and environment template published by the selected application, then keep the files together so relative bind-mount paths resolve predictably.

mkdir -p ~/project-management-app
cd ~/project-management-app
  1. Open the app’s official installation page and identify its supported Compose download or repository.
  2. Place the supplied compose.yaml (or the filename specified by that guide) in the directory.
  3. Copy the vendor’s example environment file to the filename it expects, commonly .env, without committing the copy containing real secrets.
  4. Read comments in the YAML and environment template. They often identify required hostnames, ports, database names, encryption keys and upload directories.
  5. Do not borrow a PostgreSQL image, Redis configuration, volume name or health check from another product. A shorter file is not evidence of compatibility.

TaskView’s documented layout, for example, includes a database, migration runner, API server and web app. Orangescrum’s documented path starts the app, PostgreSQL and web server, while Nosdesk adds Redis. Each arrangement implies different startup ordering and persistent paths.

How should you configure environment variables and secrets?

Compose reads .env values for interpolation, allowing the YAML to remain reusable while credentials stay outside it. Replace every sample password, token and signing key with unique values before the first launch.

  1. Generate long, random values for database passwords, application encryption keys, session secrets and any mandatory administrator token.
  2. Enter them in the untracked environment file using the variable names required by the app. Do not rename variables merely to make two products look alike.
  3. Set the public URL, hostname and port exactly as the guide specifies. Some applications use the URL to generate links or enforce cookie security.
  4. Add the environment file, backups and private key material to your repository’s ignore rules. Restrict filesystem permissions so ordinary users cannot read them.
  5. Check the app’s build instructions for a .dockerignore. Docker warns in its quickstart that secrets present in a build context can accidentally be baked into an image unless excluded.
chmod 600 .env
# Review the rendered configuration without starting services
docker compose config

The rendered configuration check can expose an unset variable, malformed YAML or an unintended host path. It does not prove that credentials are valid or that the database is reachable, so continue with the application’s own validation steps.

Which data must be persisted, and how do Compose volumes work?

Persist the database directory and every application-specific path that stores uploads, attachments, generated documents, avatars, encryption material or other state. Containers are replaceable; data written only to a container’s writable layer can disappear when that container is removed.

A named volume or a documented bind mount keeps data beyond the lifetime of an individual container. Persistence is not a backup: a corrupted database, accidental deletion or ransomware can affect the persistent volume too.

  • Use the exact volume declarations in the application’s official Compose file.
  • Record where each named volume or bind mount lives and which service owns it.
  • Check filesystem ownership and permissions before the first upload.
  • Include both database content and user-upload directories in backup jobs.
  • Keep backups on a separate destination. A removable external SSD can be one option for a home server, but it is not required for a VPS and does not replace independent copies or restore testing.

Be especially careful with teardown commands. Docker’s Compose quickstart explains that docker compose down removes containers and their writable-layer data, while docker compose down -v also removes named volumes. The latter permanently removes the volume data in that example.

# Stops and removes containers and networks; keep volumes
docker compose down

# Destructive for named volumes—use only when you intend to erase stored data
docker compose down -v

How do you validate and start the stack?

Use the launch command in the selected app’s guide. Two documented examples illustrate the difference: Orangescrum’s path uses docker compose up -d --build, while Okapi’s installation uses docker compose up -d after required secrets are created.

  1. Change to the directory containing the application’s Compose file and environment file.
  2. Render and review the configuration with docker compose config.
  3. Pull or build images as the vendor instructs. Do not replace a documented image tag with latest unless the guide explicitly supports that choice.
  4. Start the stack using the exact command from the app documentation, such as:
docker compose up -d
# Or, when the app requires a local build:
docker compose up -d --build
  1. Check container state and recent output:
docker compose ps
docker compose logs --tail=100

If a service exits, inspect that service rather than repeatedly restarting everything:

docker compose logs --tail=200 SERVICE_NAME
docker compose ps -a

Replace SERVICE_NAME with the name shown by docker compose ps. Typical causes include an unset secret, an occupied host port, a database version mismatch, an unwritable bind mount or a migration that has not completed.

How do health checks and startup ordering prevent false failures?

Starting containers simultaneously does not guarantee that a database is ready to accept connections. Use the health checks and dependency conditions supplied by the application. Docker’s tutorial demonstrates depends_on with condition: service_healthy; Nosdesk and TaskView also document health-conditioned dependencies.

When a migration runner is present, let it complete before the API or web service handles traffic. A container shown as “running” may still be initializing. Check health status and logs, then wait for the application’s documented readiness signal before opening the site to users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not invent a health check by probing an arbitrary path. The correct endpoint, credentials and interval belong to the product’s guide. If the vendor does not provide a health check, monitor the service logs and perform an authenticated browser or API check after startup.

How do you open the app and secure a production deployment?

Open the configured address only after the containers are healthy and complete the application’s first-run setup. Create the initial administrator account, confirm that a test project can be created, upload a small attachment and verify that a second user can sign in with the intended permissions.

For a public deployment, follow the selected app’s TLS and reverse-proxy instructions. Nosdesk explicitly requires HTTPS for browser login in production because it uses Secure cookies; an HTTP-only test on a private network does not satisfy that requirement. Configure DNS, certificates, proxy headers and the application’s public URL consistently so redirects and cookies use the secure hostname.

  • Apply host firewall rules and restrict administrative ports.
  • Set restart policies and health monitoring where the vendor documents them.
  • Rotate any credential that was used during testing before inviting real users.

How do you back up and restore a Compose deployment?

Back up the database and all documented file volumes together, and perform a restore rehearsal on a separate host or directory. A volume snapshot without its corresponding database dump can leave uploaded files and database records out of sync.

Before an upgrade

  • Read the app’s release notes for schema changes and supported upgrade paths.
  • Record the current image tags and save a copy of the Compose and environment configuration without exposing secrets.
  • Stop or quiesce writes if the app’s instructions require it.
  • Dump the database and copy every upload or file volume.
  • Verify that the backup can be read before changing images.

Okapi’s installation documentation instructs operators to back up its database before every upgrade. Doska’s installer documentation says its installer backs up existing database and file volumes before redeployment; that behavior is specific to Doska’s installer and should not be assumed for other applications.

Restore test

  1. Provision an isolated host with compatible Docker and Compose versions.
  2. Deploy the same application version and attach restored copies of the database and file volumes.
  3. Run the vendor’s documented migration or restore command.
  4. Sign in with a test account, inspect projects and attachments, and verify background jobs.
  5. Document the elapsed time and commands so the procedure is usable during an outage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should you update images and manage versions?

Review updates deliberately rather than pulling unpinned images on every restart. Use explicit image versions when the application documents a supported pinning method, and keep a change record containing the old and new tags.

Okapi distinguishes between its downloaded Compose file, which tracks its current published image, and editing the image tag to deploy a specific version. That distinction is useful: decide whether you want vendor-managed tracking or a controlled pin, then test the choice against your backup and rollback procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
# Review available configuration and current state
docker compose config
docker compose ps

# Pull only after reviewing the app's release and upgrade instructions
docker compose pull
# Recreate services using the selected files
docker compose up -d

Never delete old volumes as part of a routine upgrade. If a migration fails, preserve the original database volume, capture logs and follow the vendor’s rollback guidance. A fresh container is usually replaceable; a migrated database may not be reversible without a verified backup.

What are the most common deployment failures?

The app cannot connect to its database

Check that the database service name, port, username, password and database name match the application variables. Confirm that the database is healthy rather than merely running, and inspect both database and application logs for authentication or version errors.

A port is already in use

Find the process occupying the host port, then either stop it or change the host-side mapping in the app’s documented configuration. Do not change the container’s internal port unless the vendor explicitly supports that setting.

Uploads disappear after recreation

The upload path was probably not mounted to the documented named volume or bind mount. Identify the service’s declared file path, move existing data into the persistent location only as instructed by the app, and add that path to the backup set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Login fails only over HTTP

Check whether the application requires HTTPS and Secure cookies in production. Nosdesk documents this requirement explicitly. Configure TLS and the public URL before troubleshooting passwords or browser cache.

A container loops during startup

Inspect logs for missing secrets, failed migrations, permissions or an incompatible database image. If the stack uses a migration runner, wait for it to finish and verify health-conditioned dependencies before restarting dependent services.

The deployment works until the host reboots

Enable Docker and the Compose services to start on boot according to the host OS and app guidance, then verify restart policies. Test a controlled reboot while monitoring database recovery and application readiness.

What should a production readiness checklist contain?

  • The selected app’s current official installation guide is saved with the deployment notes.
  • Docker Engine and Compose versions meet that guide’s requirements.
  • All sample credentials have been replaced with unique secrets.
  • Secrets and private configuration are excluded from source repositories and build contexts.
  • Database and upload/file directories use documented persistent storage.
  • Backups include database content and files, reside separately from the host, and have passed a restore test.
  • Health checks, service ordering and restart behavior are understood.
  • Only intended public ports are exposed; internal services remain private.
  • DNS, HTTPS, secure cookies and proxy settings match the application’s production instructions.
  • An upgrade record, image-version policy and rollback plan exist.

Once these checks pass, Compose gives you a manageable operational boundary: one project directory, one declared stack and familiar commands for status, logs, rebuilds and controlled shutdowns. The application-specific documentation remains the authority for every service, secret, path and upgrade step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run two different project-management apps on one server with Compose?

Yes, provided the host has enough CPU, memory and storage and each stack uses distinct project names, host ports, networks and volume names. Keep their databases and upload directories separate, and place both behind a proxy that routes different hostnames.

Should I use bind mounts or named volumes for the database?

Use the storage type recommended by the application guide. Named volumes reduce path and permission mistakes, while bind mounts can simplify host-level backup tooling; either choice still requires documented backup and restore procedures.

How can I move a Compose deployment from a home server to a VPS?

Install compatible Docker and Compose versions on the VPS, copy the Compose and environment configuration securely, restore database and file backups, then update the public hostname and TLS configuration. Test the restored stack privately before changing DNS.

What happens if I lose the .env file but still have the volumes?

The data may remain intact, but the services can fail to start because required passwords, encryption keys or URLs are missing. Reconstruct variables from secured deployment records; do not guess encryption keys, because changing one can make existing encrypted data unreadable.
