To delete a ChatGPT conversation, open its chat-history menu, select Delete, and confirm. To remove remembered information too, delete the saved memory separately and remove the chat where you shared it. For future conversations you do not want in chat history or used to create or update memories, start a Temporary Chat before sending your first message.
How do I delete one ChatGPT conversation?
Open your chat history, select the conversation’s more-options menu (•••), choose Delete, and confirm. The conversation disappears from your account view immediately, but permanent deletion from OpenAI’s systems is scheduled within 30 days.
- Open the chat-history list.
- Find the conversation and select its ••• menu.
- Choose Delete.
- Review the prompt and confirm.
OpenAI says deletion may take longer or differ where a chat has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or where retention is required for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored, so use Archive if you may want it later.
What is the difference between deleting, archiving, and Temporary Chat?
Delete removes an existing conversation and schedules its permanent deletion; Archive hides an existing conversation while keeping it saved; Temporary Chat is a mode for new conversations, not a way to clean up existing ones.

The retention periods in the table describe OpenAI’s stated handling, not a guarantee that every copy disappears at the same moment. The documented security and legal exceptions apply to deleted chats.
How do I archive or find a chat later?
Choose Archive from the same ••• menu used to delete a conversation. The chat leaves the regular sidebar but remains saved and searchable.
- Open the conversation’s ••• menu and select Archive.
- To manage archived conversations, open Settings > Data controls > Archived chats.
- Depending on the interface, select View archived chats or Manage.
- Choose Unarchive to return a chat or Delete to remove it.
How do I delete or archive all my ChatGPT chats?
Use the bulk controls in Settings > Data controls. Choose Archive all chats to hide them while keeping them saved, or choose Delete all chats to remove them.

- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Choose Archive all chats or Delete all chats.
- Review the confirmation screen and continue only if you intend to apply the action.
These controls can affect conversations in the current account or workspace, including project chats. Bulk deletion cannot be undone; if you are unsure, archive instead.
How do I delete a saved memory?
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and use the memory-management controls available on your account. Depending on the interface, those controls may be labeled Manage or Saved memories.
- Open Settings, then Personalization, then Memory.
- Open the saved-memory management option shown for your account.
- Delete the memory or memories you no longer want retained.
Memory settings vary: you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, or Memory summary. Turning Memory off changes future personalization behavior; it does not delete past chats or, by itself, remove previously saved memories.

Does deleting a chat delete the memory ChatGPT saved from it?
Not necessarily. Chat history and saved memories are separate, so deleting the conversation where you shared information may leave a memory created from that conversation in place.
To remove the information as completely as the available controls allow, delete both the saved memory and the conversation where you first shared it. Also check the memory summary, saved memories, Library files, and connected apps for other copies, where applicable. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
- Chat deleted, memory retained: the conversation is removed, but a separate saved memory may remain.
- Memory disabled, chat retained: turning off Memory does not erase the conversation from history.
- Information copied elsewhere: deleting the chat and memory does not automatically remove copies from Library files or connected apps; check those locations where relevant.
How do I use ChatGPT without saving a conversation?
Start a new Temporary Chat and select Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending your first message. While the conversation is temporary, it does not appear in history unless you save it, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve OpenAI models.

- Start a new conversation and choose Temporary Chat.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Confirm the conversation is in Temporary Chat mode, then send your message.
- Do not save the chat if you want it to remain temporary.
OpenAI may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat and normal personalization and model-improvement settings apply.

Pay attention to the distinction between controls: chat deletion and archiving are in Data controls, while saved-memory management is under Personalization. A different label does not make Archive equivalent to Delete, and turning Memory off is not a substitute for removing a saved memory or its source chat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover a ChatGPT chat after deleting it?
No. OpenAI describes chat deletion as permanent, and a deleted conversation cannot be restored. If you might need the conversation later, archive it instead of deleting it.
If I turn off ChatGPT Memory, will it forget everything already saved?
Turning Memory off does not itself delete past chats, and it is not the same as removing saved memories. Use the memory-management controls under Personalization to remove memories you no longer want.
Does a Temporary Chat disappear immediately when I close it?
Temporary Chats do not appear in history unless saved, but that does not mean OpenAI retains no copy at all. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
