If you regularly search for an epoch converter, jwt decode, a cron expression generator, or base64 decode, Castov puts those jobs in one developer toolbox instead of sending you to a succession of unfamiliar websites. It offers browser tools, a local npm CLI and SDK, and a VS Code extension. The practical security benefit is reducing the chance that a production credential or sensitive timestamp is pasted into a service you have not evaluated. Castov’s documented time, date, and converter tools do not upload input, while its CLI runs in your local Node.js environment. You should still check the data path for every feature: Castov identifies Env Vault and P2P tools as network-using exceptions, and a local-decoder claim does not make every Castov feature automatically offline.

What is Castov, and why does it matter for JWTs and timestamps?

Castov is a three-surface toolbox for common inspection and conversion tasks: a web suite for visual, one-off work; an npm-based command-line interface and SDK for terminal or application workflows; and a VS Code extension for working without leaving an editor. Its documented scope includes timestamps and time zones, JWT headers and claims, UUIDs, Base64, JSON, cron expressions, and local secret scanning.

The problem it targets is context switching. A developer may search for an epoch converter to translate a Unix value, open another page for jwt decode, and use a third page for Base64 or cron syntax. Every tab is another place to disclose data, misread a result, or lose the surrounding code context. Keeping the operation in a local CLI or editor command can be safer and faster, especially when the value is copied from a production log or configuration file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Castov is not a blanket guarantee that every operation is offline. The official privacy FAQ says its time, date, and converter tools do not upload input to Castov servers, while Env Vault and P2P are named network-using exceptions. Treat the privacy statement as feature-specific, and verify the data path before handling credentials.

Which Castov surface should you use?

Choose the surface that matches where the data already is. The same general task can feel very different in a browser, terminal, application, or editor.

Surface Best fit Typical tasks Data-handling point
Web suite Visual, one-off conversions Time and date conversion, JSON formatting, encoding, UUID and related utilities Castov says most tools run in the browser; its FAQ specifically says time, date, and converter inputs are not uploaded.
CLI Terminal work, scripts, and pipelines Timestamp parsing, JWT inspection, UUIDv7 generation, and local secret scanning The CLI page says commands execute entirely in the local Node.js environment without sending tokens, timestamps, or hashes to remote servers.
SDK Using the same kinds of operations inside an application Programmatic conversion or inspection as part of a development tool Review the SDK’s own usage and any application integrations; the CLI’s local-execution statement should not be generalized to unrelated network features.
VS Code extension Inspecting values in source, logs, or configuration Hover timestamps, decode a selected JWT, Base64 actions, and UUID insertion Editor commands avoid a browser tab, but evaluate extension permissions and the specific command before using sensitive production material.

How do I install and run the Castov CLI?

You can try the CLI without a permanent global install or install the command for repeated use. Both documented routes use npm.

  1. Run it on demand: open a terminal with Node.js and npm available, then run npx castov. This is convenient for a quick conversion or when you do not want a global command.
  2. Install globally: run npm install -g castov. After npm finishes, use the castov command directly in new terminal sessions.
  3. Check the command’s help: run the help option exposed by your installed version before scripting. Command names and flags can change, so treat the output from your installed package as the current reference.
  4. Keep sensitive values out of shell history: avoid putting a live token directly in a command line if your shell records history or your terminal is shared. Prefer the CLI’s documented input method for your situation, and clear accidental history entries according to your shell’s procedure.

The package page documents local execution in Node.js. That is useful for credentials and internal timestamps, but local execution does not remove other risks such as terminal scrollback, process inspection, copied output, or CI logs.

How do I convert Unix timestamps with Castov?

Castov’s timestamp command accepts a value and converts it for inspection. The documented example is castov ts 1700000000.

  1. Copy the timestamp from a trusted log or application output, checking whether it is in seconds or milliseconds.
  2. Run castov ts 1700000000 with the value substituted for the example.
  3. Read the resulting date and time, then confirm the time-zone interpretation before using it in an incident report or deployment decision.

Unix timestamps are commonly represented as ten-digit seconds or thirteen-digit milliseconds. The VS Code extension automatically interprets those two lengths when you hover over a value, which helps when the unit is not labelled. A value with a different length is not automatically proof that it is invalid; ask the producing system what unit and precision it uses.

What timestamp mistakes does this prevent?

  • Seconds versus milliseconds: treating milliseconds as seconds can place an event far in the future, while treating seconds as milliseconds can place it near the Unix epoch.
  • Time-zone assumptions: the numeric value is an instant, but a displayed local date depends on the selected time zone. Record the zone used for your interpretation.
  • Copying formatting characters: remove surrounding punctuation or labels if the command expects only the numeric value.
  • Relying on a single display: compare the converted instant with a nearby log line or known event when investigating a production incident.

How can I inspect a JWT without sending it to a random website?

A JWT is a credential when it is accepted by an application, even though its middle section often looks like ordinary encoded text. Use a local Castov CLI command or the VS Code extension for inspection, and confirm where the selected feature processes data before pasting a production token.

Using the CLI

  1. Obtain the token from a controlled source and avoid placing it in a shared ticket, chat room, or shell history.
  2. Run the documented form castov jwt <token>, replacing the placeholder with the token.
  3. Inspect the decoded header and payload, paying attention to issuer, subject, audience, issued-at, and expiration claims when they are present.
  4. Remove the token and any copied output from temporary files or logs when the investigation is complete.

The CLI documentation says commands execute entirely in the local Node.js environment and do not send tokens, timestamps, or hashes to remote servers. That is a product claim about the documented CLI behavior, not a reason to assume that every Castov feature, plugin, or network-connected function has identical handling.

Using VS Code

  1. Install the official Castov extension from the VS Code Marketplace.
  2. Select the JWT in a file, editor buffer, or log opened in VS Code.
  3. Open the Command Palette and choose Castov: Decode Selected JWT Token.
  4. Review the header, payload, and expiration information in the result, then close or clear the output when it is no longer needed.

The extension is designed for inspection rather than for replacing your identity provider or validating a token’s acceptance by an API. Decoding reveals claims; it does not, by itself, prove that the signature is valid, that the issuer is trusted, or that the token has not been revoked. Use your service’s normal verification path before making an authorization decision.

What does the VS Code extension do?

The extension adds lightweight actions to the editor so you can inspect values where they appear in code or logs.

  • Timestamp hover: hover over ten-digit seconds or thirteen-digit milliseconds for an automatic interpretation.
  • Selected timestamp conversion: select a timestamp and run Castov: Convert Selected Timestamp to Date.
  • JWT inspection: select a token and run Castov: Decode Selected JWT Token to view its header, payload, and expiration details.
  • Base64 actions: encode or decode selected text from the editor command set.
  • UUID insertion: insert UUID version 4 or version 7 values without leaving the file.

These actions are useful in a code review or incident investigation because the value remains next to the surrounding variable name, endpoint, or log message. They also make accidental disclosure easier if you work in a shared screen recording or an editor workspace synced to another service, so use the same handling discipline you would apply to a terminal.

How do I use Castov for Base64, JSON, UUIDs, and cron expressions?

These formats are often adjacent to the timestamp or token that prompted the investigation. Castov gives you a common place to inspect them, but each format has different security and correctness implications.

Base64 encode and decode

Use the web tool, CLI capability, or VS Code Base64 action for text that is safe to expose to the chosen surface. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: decoding can reveal the original bytes, and a decoded JWT segment is not confidential merely because it was encoded. Preserve the character set and padding when moving binary data, and do not treat successful decoding as proof that the content is trustworthy.

JSON inspection

Format JSON before reading nested claims or comparing configuration. Check that the parser accepted the entire document, not just the first valid fragment, and avoid copying secrets into public formatters. A neatly indented document can still contain credentials, private keys, or production endpoints.

UUID generation

The CLI documents castov uuid --v7 for generating a UUID version 7. The VS Code extension can insert UUID v4 or v7 values. Select the version based on the consuming system’s requirements; do not substitute a newly generated identifier for an existing database key unless the application explicitly permits it.

Cron expressions

A cron helper is valuable for checking field order and the next run time, particularly when schedules cross time zones or daylight-saving changes. Confirm which cron dialect your scheduler uses before deploying an expression, because field counts and special syntax vary between schedulers. Treat a generated schedule as a candidate to test, not as evidence that a production scheduler will interpret it identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Castov actually private and local?

For the documented CLI, Castov says execution is 100% local in Node.js and that tokens, timestamps, and hashes are not sent to remote servers. Its FAQ separately says time, date, and converter tools do not upload input. Those are useful boundaries, but they do not cover every possible feature.

Features that need separate scrutiny

  • Env Vault: named by Castov as a network-using feature.
  • P2P: also identified as network-using, so data may leave the process even if a basic converter does not upload input.
  • Extensions and integrations: inspect their permissions, update behavior, and any connected service before selecting a production value.
  • Browser environment: local browser execution still exposes data to the page, browser extensions, clipboard managers, screen capture, and shared profiles.

For high-impact credentials, use a redacted or expired token when you only need to understand the shape of a JWT. If a live token was pasted into an untrusted service, revoke or rotate it according to your identity system’s incident procedure rather than assuming that deleting the browser tab removed the exposure.

What should I check before putting Castov into a production workflow?

Start with the smallest workflow that solves the problem, then document its handling assumptions.

  1. Classify the value: mark it as public, internal, sensitive, or credential-bearing. A live JWT belongs in the last category.
  2. Select the surface: prefer the local CLI or in-editor command when the value already exists in a controlled development environment.
  3. Read the feature-specific privacy statement: do not extend the CLI’s local claim to Env Vault, P2P, or another networked capability.
  4. Control copies: review shell history, editor backups, clipboard history, terminal logs, CI artifacts, and screen recordings.
  5. Verify the interpretation: check timestamp units, time zone, JWT claim names, UUID version, or cron dialect against the producing system.
  6. Record only what is needed: retain a redacted claim set or hash rather than a complete token when an incident record requires evidence.

This checklist separates two questions that are often conflated: whether a tool can parse a value correctly and whether the value was handled safely. Castov addresses the first across several formats and offers local paths for many operations; your environment still determines the remaining exposure.

What are the common failure modes?

Most problems are caused by an incorrect unit, an incomplete token, or a mismatch between the tool and the system that produced the data.

The timestamp looks decades off

Try the other common unit first: seconds versus milliseconds. Then verify whether the source emitted a decimal, an integer, or a value with fractional precision, and confirm the time zone used for display.

The JWT command rejects the value

Check that the complete three-part token was copied, including its separators, and remove surrounding quotation marks or log prefixes if the command does not expect them. A value that is merely Base64 text is not necessarily a complete JWT.

The decoded claims look unreadable

JWT payloads can contain compact names, numeric dates, nested JSON, or application-specific strings. Formatting the JSON improves readability, but only the issuing service’s documentation can tell you what an unfamiliar claim means.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The UUID is accepted but behaves unexpectedly

Confirm whether the application expects v4, v7, or another identifier format. Generation and insertion do not update database constraints, collision policy, sorting assumptions, or ownership rules.

A cron preview differs from production

Check the scheduler’s dialect, server time zone, daylight-saving rules, and whether it uses five or six fields. Test the expression in a non-production schedule before replacing an existing job.

When is Castov a good fit, and when is it not?

Castov is a good fit when you repeatedly perform small conversions or inspections and want one consistent workflow across a terminal, editor, and browser. It is especially useful for checking a timestamp copied from a log, reading non-secret JWT claims locally, generating a UUID during development, or formatting JSON during a review.

It is not a substitute for an identity provider’s token-validation endpoint, a secrets-management policy, a scheduler’s own test environment, or an incident-response process. Its local execution claims reduce one class of disclosure risk; they do not authenticate a token, establish trust in a claim, or guarantee that a networked feature has no external handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the practical takeaway?

Use Castov to keep routine developer conversions close to the code and terminal where they originate. Start with npx castov for a quick trial, use castov ts, castov jwt, and castov uuid --v7 for documented CLI tasks, and use the VS Code commands when the value is already selected in an editor. For any production credential, choose the feature whose data path you have verified, minimize copies, and rotate the credential if it was exposed to a service you do not trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Castov replace a JWT signature verifier?

No. Decoding displays the token’s structure and claims, but authorization still depends on signature verification, issuer and audience checks, expiration handling, and your service’s revocation rules. Keep those checks in the application or identity platform that makes the access decision.

Should I paste a live access token into the browser tool?

Only after confirming the specific tool’s handling and accepting the residual browser risks. A redacted, expired, or synthetic token is safer for learning the format; if a live credential reaches an untrusted page, treat it as potentially exposed and follow your rotation procedure.

Why does the same timestamp show different clock times on two machines?

The Unix instant can be identical while each interface renders it in a different time zone or daylight-saving state. Compare the numeric value first, then compare the named zone and formatting settings used by each machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which UUID version should a new service generate?

Use the version required by the consuming schema and its ordering or privacy assumptions. Castov documents v7 generation and v4 insertion, but the tool cannot decide whether your database, API, or interoperability contract expects one of them.

Can a cron expression generated in Castov be deployed unchanged?

Not necessarily. Validate it against the exact scheduler, field count, server time zone, and daylight-saving behavior used in production, then run a controlled test before changing a live job.
