A game subscription is worth paying for when the games you actually want to play are available on your platform, you expect to use them enough to justify the recurring cost, and the plan’s extras matter to you. Judge it against your likely play and the games you would otherwise buy—not the size of its advertised catalog.
How to decide in five steps
- Estimate an ordinary month. Use your typical available play time, not a holiday or unusually busy month. List the games you genuinely expect to play and the platform you will play them on.
- Check the exact plan and current catalog. Confirm that those games are included in the tier you are considering and available on your device and in your region. Catalog access is conditional: Xbox says access ends when a subscription expires or a title leaves the library, and availability varies by region, plan, and platform. PlayStation likewise says catalog availability varies by tier and over time. Xbox Game Pass plans and FAQ; PlayStation Plus plans and benefits.
- Compare the cost with your real alternative. Put the local subscription fee beside what you would pay to buy or otherwise access the few games you expect to play during the same period. Do not add up the retail price of every catalog title. Trying unfamiliar games and having a convenient library can be worthwhile, but only if you expect to use those benefits.
- Count only extras you will use. Online multiplayer may be valuable if you play with friends. Cloud gaming, trials, classic games, discounts, and bundled services should count only when they fit your habits. The tiers differ: PS Plus Essential includes multiplayer and monthly games; Extra adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds trials, cloud streaming, and a Classics Catalog. Xbox tiers also differ in games, devices, and features. PlayStation Plus plan details; Xbox Game Pass plan details.
- Account for renewal and uncertainty. Both are recurring subscriptions. Xbox says recurring billing is on by default and can be turned off; PlayStation says membership automatically continues until canceled. If you are unsure how much you will play, compare a month first, set a reminder before renewal, and check the cancellation terms for your region. Xbox Game Pass FAQ; PlayStation Plus terms and plans.
What to compare when choosing a plan
Use the same time period for each option—such as the next month or the next few months—and compare the factors that affect your own use.
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Cost | The local fee over the period you expect to play, including whether the displayed price is monthly or for a longer billing term. |
| Games and platform | Whether the specific games you want are currently included on your platform and in your region. |
| Time available | How much you realistically expect to play before a game leaves the catalog or your interest shifts. |
| Useful extras | Whether you will use multiplayer, cloud play, trials, classics, discounts, or bundled services. |
| Renewal and cancellation | How the plan renews, how to stop future billing, and the terms that apply in your region. |
| Access preference | Whether you are comfortable with rotating access or would rather buy games for a more predictable personal library. |

If cloud gaming is a major reason you subscribe
Check the allowance as well as the plan’s price and device support. On September 3, 2026, Xbox announced that starting in November 2026, monthly included cloud-gaming hours are planned at 15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. At announcement time, Xbox said it would provide more detail on extra-hour prices and implementation before the change. Cloud-heavy players should verify the terms that are actually in effect before subscribing. Xbox cloud-gaming changes announcement.
Use a short trial period to test your estimate
- Write down the games you expect to play and the platform you will use.
- Check that those games are in the current catalog for the exact tier and region you are considering.
- Compare the local subscription fee with buying or otherwise accessing those games for the same period.
- Subscribe for a short period if available, then note what you actually played and which extra features you used.
- Before renewal, compare your actual use with the cost and decide whether to keep the plan, change tiers, or cancel.
There is no reliable universal number of weekly play hours that makes a subscription worthwhile. The break-even point depends on the local fee, the games you would otherwise pay for, and the value you personally place on convenience and other benefits.

When buying games may fit better
Buying may suit you better if the titles you care about are not included, you play only a small number of games over a long period, or you want continued access without depending on a subscription catalog. A subscription can fit better when several games you want are currently included, you expect to play them during the same period, and the features bundled into that tier have practical value to you. Neither model is automatically cheaper: compare the titles and costs you would actually use.
