Start with the status code: 401 points to authentication, 403 to permission, 404 to a missing or concealed resource, and 500 to an unexpected server-side failure. Record the failing request and its response, then investigate the evidence that matches the code.
What each API error tells you
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | The request does not contain valid authentication credentials for the requested resource. The response should include a WWW-Authenticate challenge describing the expected authentication scheme. |
| 403 Forbidden | The server understood the request but refused it. The caller may be authenticated but lack permission to perform the requested action. |
| 404 Not Found | The server cannot find the requested resource. A service may also return 404 to conceal a resource that the caller is not allowed to know about. |
| 500 Internal Server Error | The server encountered an unexpected condition and could not provide a more specific server-error response. |
These codes belong to different HTTP response classes: 401, 403, and 404 are 4xx client-error responses; 500 is a 5xx server-error response. The class helps locate the likely failure stage, but the code alone does not establish the root cause. See MDN’s HTTP response status codes.
Capture the failing request before changing it
Reproduce the failure and record the HTTP method, complete URL, status, response headers, and response body. Keep the exact request details, including the resource identifier and any authentication context, so you can compare a failing request with a corrected one. Response details and status are useful diagnostic evidence; MDN also recommends checking reported status and verifying paths when troubleshooting a 404 (website troubleshooting guidance).
Debug a 401: check authentication
Inspect the request’s Authorization header and compare its scheme with the server’s WWW-Authenticate response header. The request may omit credentials, use the wrong scheme, contain an invalid or expired token, or present credentials in the wrong context. The HTTP authentication pattern uses WWW-Authenticate to challenge and Authorization to supply credentials; see MDN’s HTTP authentication guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the client is sending the header on the request that actually fails.
- Check that the credential is valid for this API, environment, and requested resource.
- Use the challenge to determine what authentication scheme the service expects rather than guessing.
MDN describes 401 as a response for a request that lacks valid authentication credentials (401 Unauthorized).
Debug a 403: check permissions
Do not assume that changing or refreshing credentials will fix a 403. First determine which identity the service recognizes, then check whether that identity has the required role, scope, resource-level access, and permission for the requested action. Compare the exact target resource and operation against the service’s access rules.

An unchanged request is expected to be refused again if the authorization conditions have not changed. The status means the server understood the request but refused to process it (MDN: 403 Forbidden).
Debug a 404: check the route and resource
Verify the exact URL path, route, HTTP method, and resource ID. A valid API endpoint can still return 404 when the particular resource is absent. Also consider whether the service intentionally conceals a restricted resource by responding as though it were not found; a 404 response alone does not prove that the resource never existed.

MDN defines 404 as the server being unable to find the requested resource and notes that the condition can be temporary or permanent (404 Not Found).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Debug a 500: investigate the server-side event
A 500 is deliberately generic: it tells the client that the server failed unexpectedly, not why. If the response includes a request ID or correlation identifier, use it to find the matching server-side event. Then inspect the application and infrastructure logs for the corresponding exception or failure, including relevant configuration, resource, or permission problems in that system.

Because the status does not identify a root cause, resolving a 500 requires access to the service’s own logs or diagnostics. See MDN: 500 Internal Server Error.
