A custom Eclipse DLTK editor does not gain debugging support just because it can open, edit, or run a program. Debugging requires a launch configuration type that supports debug mode, a launch delegate that starts the target for that mode, and language-specific debug integration for breakpoints, execution state, and source lookup. Start by identifying exactly which stage fails; each points to a different part of the plug-in.
First, identify what is failing
Check these milestones in order: can the editor open the source, can the program launch in run mode, is a debug configuration available, does a debug session start, do breakpoints and execution state appear, and can a stack frame open its source? Editing, launching, debugging, and source navigation are separate capabilities. A working earlier milestone does not prove that the later ones are implemented.

Check the launch configuration type
Eclipse launch configurations are named sets of attributes associated with a launch configuration type. The type identifies the kind of launch, declares which modes it supports, and associates a delegate that performs the launch. A run action alone does not establish that a language supports debug mode. Inspect the language plug-in’s launch contribution and confirm that debug is among its supported modes, and that the type is available in the Debug Configurations dialog.
See the Eclipse reference for the launch configuration types extension point. The reference marks the fileExtension child as deprecated and identifies launch shortcuts as its replacement for that use. Because the reference uses the latest documentation path, check the documentation and API bundle for the Eclipse release your plug-in targets before relying on extension-point details.

If the configuration appears but launch fails
The launch delegate is responsible for launching the application for the selected configuration and mode. Confirm that the selected configuration supplies the values your language runtime needs and that the delegate reads them correctly. Depending on the language, useful checks include the interpreter or executable path, arguments, working directory, environment, and project mapping; these are language-specific possibilities, not a shared list of required DLTK attributes.
- Validate the runtime. Confirm the configured interpreter or executable exists and can run the target program outside the launch path, where applicable.
- Check the configuration values. Compare the values saved for the selected launch configuration with what the delegate expects, including paths and project references.
- Inspect mode handling. Make sure the delegate responds appropriately when asked to launch in debug mode, rather than treating the request as an ordinary run.
- Verify the returned launch. The delegate should return a platform launch representing the session so Eclipse can manage and present it.

If the program starts but debugging does not work
A running process is not by itself a usable debug session. Eclipse’s platform provides shared infrastructure—including debug events and listeners, breakpoint management, expression management, and UI framework services—but does not supply a language-specific debug model for a custom editor. Language tooling must connect the target runtime’s behavior to the concepts users see in the debugger, such as suspended execution, breakpoints, stack frames, and variables.
The Eclipse Debug Core API documentation explicitly says the core plug-in does not implement a debug model itself; integrated language tooling supplies one using an underlying debug architecture of its choice. Eclipse’s “Debugging a Program” guidance puts the requirement plainly: “If you support debug mode, then you need to implement a debug model and UI that allow users to interact with your programs while under debug.”

- If breakpoints are ignored, check whether the language debug integration recognizes the workspace breakpoints and translates their locations into a form the runtime understands.
- If the debugger does not show suspension, frames, or variables, check whether runtime events and state are being mapped into the language’s debug model.
- If expressions disappear between sessions, note that Eclipse’s expression manager does not automatically persist expressions. The platform does maintain, persist, and restore breakpoints through its breakpoint manager.
The Debug Core package reference describes the launch manager’s management of launches, targets, and processes, as well as the breakpoint and expression managers. These shared services help manage a debugger integration; they do not remove the need to implement one.
If stack frames do not open the right source
Source navigation is distinct from launching and from presenting debug state. A launch type can specify source path computation and a source locator identifier so Eclipse can connect a frame to the corresponding language source. Check that the computed paths match the project layout and that the paths or line information reported by the runtime can be resolved against those sources.

Use the launch-type reference’s source lookup attributes to verify the relevant contribution for your target release. If frames themselves are missing, investigate the debug model and runtime mapping first; a source locator can resolve a frame’s source, but it cannot create missing execution state.

Runtime preferences are supplied by the language tooling, so do not assume a custom DLTK language has the same preference pages as another language. The official DLTK Tcl setup guide directs Tcl users to Window > Preferences > Tcl > Interpreters, where an interpreter can be added manually or located with Search. That is a Tcl example, not a universal DLTK path. For another language, use its own runtime configuration and verify that the selected interpreter is available to the launch delegate.

What the DLTK Tcl example does—and does not—show
The official DLTK Tcl/Xotcl overview describes a broader IDE contribution that includes project tooling, views, editors, wizards, code assistance, and a builder. Its Tcl editor documentation lists syntax highlighting, content and code assist, and debugging features. Together with the Tcl interpreter setup guide, these pages illustrate a shipped language environment that integrates editor and runtime features. They do not establish that a newly created DLTK editor automatically receives a debugger.
Use the failure boundary to choose the next fix
- No debug option: inspect the launch configuration type, its supported modes, and whether the contribution is discoverable.
- Debug option but no session: inspect configuration values, runtime setup, and the delegate’s handling of debug mode.
- Session starts but no usable breakpoints or state: inspect the language debug model and how it maps runtime events and source positions.
- State appears but source navigation fails: inspect source path computation, source locator configuration, and runtime-reported locations.
The Eclipse reference pages cited here use latest paths and do not consistently identify a specific Eclipse or DLTK release. Verify API and extension-point details against the release your plug-in targets; in particular, do not use the deprecated fileExtension contribution as though it were a current recommendation.
