Show or hide the title bar and other toolbars

Open the Firefox menu, select More Tools, then Customize toolbar. Or right-click a blank area of the tab strip or toolbar and choose the customization option.

To show the title bar, select Title Bar at the lower left of the customization panel. Clear the checkbox to hide it.

To control the Menu bar or Bookmarks toolbar, open the Toolbars dropdown. The Bookmarks toolbar can be set to Always Show, Never Show, or Only Show on New Tab.

Select Done to finish.
If the Title Bar checkbox or Bookmarks toolbar options are missing, exit full-screen mode with F11. Menu labels and their appearance can vary on Linux depending on the desktop environment. See Mozilla’s toolbar customization guide.
Move toolbar buttons or use the overflow menu
In the customization panel, drag a control to a new position on the toolbar, or drag it into or out of the overflow menu. Select Done when the layout is right. Some controls, including the menu button, cannot be moved into the overflow menu.

If the layout is damaged and you want to start over, select Restore Defaults in customization mode. This also resets the default theme and changes vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs if you had enabled vertical tabs.
Change toolbar colors and background
A theme changes Firefox’s visual treatment, including toolbar colors and background images. Mozilla Support describes it this way: “A theme changes the appearance of Firefox, such as the color scheme and background image of the toolbars.” Menu and built-in page colors follow the toolbar’s light or dark text treatment. Firefox’s Light, Dark, and System appearance choices control its color scheme; System follows your operating system’s light or dark setting.

Browse and apply themes

Open a new tab or window and select the customization button at the bottom right.

Choose Appearance, then Theme, and select a theme.
You can manage installed community themes from the menu’s Extensions and themes section. For more control over tab and toolbar colors or a custom background, Mozilla points to the Firefox Color extension. See Mozilla’s guide to Firefox themes.

Reduce toolbar spacing: check your Firefox version
The supported route to compact toolbar spacing depends on whether you have Firefox 157 or later, or Firefox 156 or earlier.

This is an advanced workaround; Mozilla recommends Normal density for these older versions and warns that changing advanced settings can seriously affect stability, security, and performance. |
Check your installed Firefox version before changing density. Mozilla’s steps and warnings are in its Compact mode guidance.

Should you use custom CSS or hidden preferences?
For most people, the built-in toolbar controls, appearance settings, and themes are the safer way to customize Firefox. Mozilla classifies about:config preferences and userChrome.css or userContent.css rules as advanced options. They can cause unexpected behavior or break Firefox, and future updates may affect them. Mozilla recommends that only developers consider these methods. Read its advanced customization guidance before proceeding.
