Use Budgie Desktop Settings to change panels and applets, and Budgie Control Center → Keyboard → Shortcuts to configure keyboard shortcuts. The steps below describe Budgie 10.10; menu labels and available applets can differ by distribution and installed version.
Check your Budgie version and open the right settings app
Budgie keeps desktop-specific controls separate from system settings. The official Budgie FAQ identifies Budgie Desktop Settings as the place for panels and applets, and Budgie Control Center as the place for system settings such as keyboard and mouse options.
To check the panel workflow, either right-click the panel and choose Panel settings, or open Applications → Budgie Desktop Settings. For shortcut settings, open Budgie Control Center → Keyboard → Shortcuts.
These directions are specifically documented for Budgie 10.10. The project homepage lists Budgie 10.10.3 as released September 27, 2026; check the version and packaging on your own system if a label or control is missing. Budgie’s homepage

Change a panel’s position, size, and visibility
- Open Budgie Desktop Settings using either entry point above.
- Select the panel you want to modify. If the change seems to affect the wrong area—or has no visible effect—confirm that the selected panel is the one you intended.
- Adjust the panel’s position to the top, bottom, left, or right, then set its size, transparency, and auto-hide behavior as desired.
Panel selection matters because settings apply to the selected panel. Keep this distinct from applet management: changing panel properties does not require removing or reordering an applet.
Add, remove, and reorder applets
- In Budgie Desktop Settings, select the panel where you want the applet.
- Use that panel’s add and remove controls to manage its applets.
- Use the up and down controls to change an applet’s position in the panel.
The Budgie FAQ lists examples including Icon Tasklist, Clock, System Tray, Workspace Switcher, Show Desktop, Spacer, Separator, Keyboard Layout Indicator, Places, and Applications Menu. This is a representative list, not a promise that every distribution’s package includes every applet.

Configure or add a keyboard shortcut
- Open Budgie Control Center → Keyboard → Shortcuts.
- To create a custom shortcut, click the add control.
- Enter the command you want the shortcut to run, then press the key combination you want to assign.
- Apply the change.
Before assigning a combination, consider whether it is already used by another shortcut. Budgie’s FAQ groups shortcuts into system actions, window management, workspace navigation, application launching, and custom shortcuts. Examples it gives include Super + A or Super + N for Raven depending on configuration, Super + Space for the application menu, Super + arrow keys for tiling, Ctrl + Alt + Delete for the lock screen, and Alt + Tab for switching windows. Budgie 10.10 is the project’s Wayland release series. Its January 10, 2026 release announcement says the desktop retains panels, applets, Raven, and familiar keyboard shortcuts. The project recommends a wlroots-based compositor and describes labwc integration through a bridge that mirrors settings from Budgie Control Center and Budgie Desktop Settings into labwc configuration. The bridge supports default shortcuts for actions such as opening the Budgie Menu and Raven, launching the run dialog, switching workspaces, and taking screenshots. For ordinary panel and shortcut changes, start with the settings applications rather than editing compositor configuration. Compositor-level configuration is a separate layer, and the exact behavior can depend on the installed version and distribution packaging.

Troubleshoot missing controls or unexpected changes
- A panel change appears to do nothing: Check that you selected the visible panel you intended in Budgie Desktop Settings.
- An applet is missing from the list: Applet availability is not identical across all packaged builds. Check your distribution’s Budgie version and packaging.
- A shortcut behaves differently than an example: Examples in the FAQ are not universal defaults; inspect the shortcut list on your system and check for conflicts.
- Settings do not behave as expected under Wayland: Confirm your Budgie version and compositor. Budgie 10.10’s Wayland and labwc integration involves compositor-level behavior in addition to the regular settings workflow.
