In New Yahoo Mail on a desktop browser, create a filter from More options > Settings > Filters > Add new filters, set matching rules and a destination folder, then save. Use a filter to sort or divert matching messages; use Yahoo’s separate blocked-address setting when your goal is to block a sender.
How to create a filter in New Yahoo Mail
These steps are for New Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser. Yahoo’s help material does not establish that the same menu labels or procedure apply to every mobile app, account interface, or region.
- Open Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser.
- Select More options, then Settings.
- Select Filters, then Add new filters.
- Enter a name for the filter, define the message rules, and choose an existing destination folder or create one.
- Select Save.
A filter can route matching messages to a folder, including Trash. Yahoo says New Yahoo Mail supports up to 500 filters; its help page does not state when that limit was published. Yahoo Help: Use filters to organize in New Yahoo Mail.
Choose between sorting mail and blocking a sender

A filter is useful when the match is based on message criteria or when you want mail sorted rather than blocked. If mail still appears after blocking an address, Yahoo says the displayed From address may have been spoofed. Inspect the full message headers and compare the bottom From address with the address shown in a Received or Mailfrom field; Yahoo identifies the topmost Received or Mailfrom field as showing the true sending address. You can block that address or create a filter to route those messages to a folder such as Trash. Yahoo Help: Spot and stop emails from a blocked address.

Set filter priority and manage existing filters
Yahoo applies filters in list order, from top to bottom. If two filters apply to the same email, the top filter is used. A broad rule above a more specific one can therefore take precedence. Select a filter and use the up or down arrow controls at the top of the list to change its priority. Yahoo Help: Use filters to organize in New Yahoo Mail.
To change a filter, select it in the list, edit its name, rules, or destination folder, and save. To remove one, select it and use the delete control.

Fix common filter problems
- A message did not go where expected: Check the filter list for another matching rule higher up, and inspect rules that may redirect the message away from Inbox.
- A new filter did not move older messages: Yahoo says filters do not apply to mail already received. Move older messages manually if needed.
- A message seems to bypass your filter: Yahoo says messages pass through its spam filter before other filters. Check Spam first.
- You expected any one of several criteria to match: Yahoo says a filter uses all rules defined for it. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends separate filters when messages need to meet different criteria. It also advises avoiding negative criteria such as “does not contain” and preferring positive criteria such as “begins with.”
- Mail is missing from another mail client: Yahoo says POP clients download only from Inbox, so a filter that moves messages to another folder can prevent that client from downloading them. Yahoo also says filters do not work on third-party mailboxes connected through IMAP.
