A fair AI-audio A/B preview uses one unchanged source excerpt, renders an unprocessed reference (A) and an AI-processed version (B), matches their loudness with an ITU-R BS.1770-aligned meter, and keeps every other playback variable constant. Randomized or counterbalanced order, neutral labels, separate questions about artifacts and preference, and complete measurement notes prevent a louder or technically different file from winning by accident. The result is not merely a polished demo: it is a listening test another person can repeat and audit.

What makes an A/B audio preview fair?

It is fair when the listener’s decision is driven by the processing rather than by level, timing, encoding, or presentation clues. Render A and B from the same source, align their listening windows, match loudness before the blind comparison, and disclose enough technical detail for someone else to reproduce the result.

Potential confound Control to apply Why it matters
Different excerpt or edit point Use identical start and end points, fades, and silence handling A different musical event or spoken phrase can dominate the judgment.
Loudness difference Measure integrated loudness and apply the same declared target and tolerance A level advantage can be mistaken for better quality.
Peak or codec difference Check true peak after gain changes and use the same sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, and codec Clipping, inter-sample overs, or a different encoder can create artifacts unrelated to the AI process.
Playback-chain difference Use one player, device, output mode, and monitoring path Different resampling, volume, or spatial processing changes what listeners hear.
Order and labels Randomize A/B order or counterbalance it across listeners; use neutral labels People can form a preference from the first sample or from knowing which file is processed.

How do I choose an excerpt that reveals AI artifacts?

Choose a short, fixed passage that contains the material your processor is supposed to improve and the material on which it can fail. One excerpt is acceptable for a stable process; use several fixed excerpts when the behavior changes with content or over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include revealing events

  • Transients: drum attacks, consonants, plucked strings, or other fast edges expose smearing and transient damage.
  • Sustained material: pads, held notes, room tone, and long vowels make warbling, pumping, and spectral movement easier to notice.
  • Speech: connected speech tests intelligibility, sibilance, and unnatural modulation.
  • Dense and sparse passages: a processor may behave differently when many sounds compete or when a quiet background is exposed.

Lock the edit

Export A and B from exactly the same source range. Keep the same fades, pre-roll, post-roll, sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, and silence. If the AI process adds latency or changes duration, document that behavior and define a fixed listening window rather than trimming one file by ear. A listener should never have to decide whether a timing shift is part of the treatment or an editing error.

Use more than one passage when necessary

If artifacts appear only after several seconds, repeat a fixed excerpt or provide multiple excerpts with the same rules. Label passages with neutral identifiers such as “Excerpt 1” and “Excerpt 2,” not with descriptions that reveal which one is expected to sound better.

Which loudness and peak measurements belong in the preview?

Use a meter aligned with ITU-R BS.1770 and record integrated loudness, short-term or momentary loudness, and true peak for both files. BS.1770 uses K-weighting and RMS-based blocks, with quiet blocks gated, and reports values as LUFS or LKFS; true-peak measurement catches peaks that ordinary sample-peak meters can miss.

Measurement What it tells you Where to record it
Integrated loudness (LUFS/LKFS) The average level over the defined excerpt or programme, with the standard’s gating behavior Before matching and after the final export
Short-term loudness How level changes over a short moving window Useful for spotting pumping or a local level shift hidden by the integrated value
Momentary loudness Very brief level behavior Useful around attacks, speech consonants, and abrupt processing changes
True peak Estimated analog-domain peak, including inter-sample overs After gain matching and again after encoding or final export

Keep the meter name and version in your test record. A meter’s display can use LUFS or LKFS terminology; the important requirement is that its measurement method is aligned with BS.1770 and that A and B are measured with the same settings and window.

How do I loudness-match A and B without changing their character?

Measure each file, choose one declared target and tolerance, apply a uniform gain correction to the quieter or louder file as required, and measure again. Do not keep adjusting one version by ear after the blind test starts.

  1. Measure the unmodified renders. Capture integrated LUFS, short-term or momentary behavior, and true peak for A and B over the exact listening window.
  2. Declare the target. State the target loudness, tolerance, meter, and whether the target applies to the excerpt or to a longer programme.
  3. Calculate a uniform correction. A practical correction is the difference between the target and the measured integrated value, applied as one gain change to the whole file. Do not use compression, limiting, or automation merely to make the readings agree.
  4. Re-measure before delivery. Confirm that both integrated readings fall within the declared tolerance and that their short-term behavior remains interpretable.
  5. Check true peak after the gain change. If the correction creates clipping or excessive inter-sample overs, lower the declared target or revise the render while preserving the same treatment for the comparison.
  6. Repeat after encoding. A codec can alter peak readings and introduce artifacts, so measure the files in the format listeners will actually hear.

Audio Engineering Society guidance defines normalization as active level matching of file-based audio to a defined target loudness and describes applying a uniform gain correction after measuring integrated LUFS. That is different from peak-normalizing each file to the same sample maximum: equal peaks do not guarantee equal perceived loudness.

Is -23 LUFS the right target for an AI preview?

No single target is mandatory for every preview. EBU R 128 version 5.0, issued in November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of -23 LUFS together with Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak descriptors, while internet and on-demand previews have a different distribution context.

How should I run a blind or double-blind A/B listening test?

Randomize which file is presented first, or counterbalance the order so half of the listeners hear A first and half hear B first. Use neutral labels and conceal the processed identity whenever practical; then ask about preference, audible artifacts, and overall quality as separate judgments.

  1. Prepare matched files. Finish loudness and true-peak checks before creating the listener interface.
  2. Assign neutral labels. The player can call the files “Sample 1” and “Sample 2.” Keep the mapping from label to processing condition outside the listener view.
  3. Randomize or counterbalance order. Randomization changes the order for each trial; counterbalancing deliberately splits first-listen order across listeners.
  4. Keep controls identical. Provide the same play, pause, replay, seek, and volume behavior for both files. Do not let one button apply extra gain or processing.
  5. Separate the questions. Ask whether an artifact is audible, how acceptable the sound is, and which sample is preferred. A listener can prefer one file while still hearing an artifact in it.
  6. Capture the task wording. Store the exact instructions, labels, order method, and any time limit with the results.

This protocol is an editorial application of ITU-T P.833.2, approved 29 May 2024, which describes subjective listening-only impairment testing for fullband speech codecs. The recommendation supplies a disciplined listening approach; it does not define one universal AI-audio interface or listener sample size.

What should listeners rate separately?

Separate dimensions prevent a single “which is better?” response from hiding the reason for a choice. Use wording that names the task without suggesting the expected answer.

Question What it isolates Useful follow-up
“Do you hear an unwanted artifact?” Detectability of warbling, pumping, clicks, phase movement, or transient damage Ask the listener to identify the time range or event, if the interface supports it.
“Which sample is more intelligible?” Speech clarity and consonant preservation Use only when the excerpt contains speech.
“Which sample preserves dynamics more naturally?” Whether contrast between quiet and loud material remains intact Explain that “natural” refers to the excerpt, not to a preferred genre aesthetic.
“Which sample do you prefer overall?” Holistic choice after the more specific judgments Do not treat preference as proof that one file has fewer artifacts.

What should I compare when testing two AI processing options?

Compare subjective scores only after the files are matched and blinded, and report objective measurements separately. A useful comparison covers the following axes rather than collapsing everything into one rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Evidence to report
Loudness-matched perceived quality Listener preference and quality ratings with the target and tolerance stated
Audible artifacts Reports of warbling, pumping, phase damage, clicks, or transient softening, tied to excerpts or time ranges
Speech intelligibility Separate listener judgments for speech passages
Dynamics preservation Listener comments or ratings plus short-term loudness behavior; do not substitute integrated LUFS for dynamics
Latency Processing latency and any alignment treatment used for playback
True-peak headroom True-peak values before and after matching and after encoding
Codec robustness Whether the same artifacts remain, worsen, or appear after the delivery codec
Blinded listener preference Order method, exact question, and response counts, reported apart from meter readings

Which technical settings must remain identical?

Keep the following settings fixed unless the setting itself is the experimental variable. If a model requires a different format, create a controlled format stage and disclose it rather than comparing unlike files.

What details make an A/B preview reproducible?

Publish a compact methods panel next to the player. Another person should be able to recreate the two renders, verify the level match, and understand exactly what listeners were asked to do.

  • Describe the source excerpt, including content type, duration, and why it exposes the process.
  • Identify the unprocessed reference and the AI model/version and processing settings.
  • Name the loudness meter and version, measurement standard, integration window, target, and tolerance.
  • Report integrated LUFS and true peak for A and B before matching and after matching, including each gain offset.
  • State sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, codec, bitrate, and export container.
  • Document latency, alignment, fades, and any fixed listening window.
  • Explain whether order was randomized or counterbalanced and how labels were concealed.
  • Publish the exact listener task wording and the response categories.
  • Keep objective meter results separate from subjective ratings and comments.

What common mistakes make an AI audio test unfair?

The louder file wins

Matching only peak level or trusting a player’s automatic volume behavior leaves perceived loudness uncontrolled. Re-run integrated LUFS and true-peak measurements on the final encoded files.

The files are edited differently

A one-sample offset, unequal fade, or different tail can expose a different transient or room sound. Re-export both versions from one locked session and compare the file lengths and channel structure before listening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gain matching creates clipping

Raising a quiet file can push sample peaks and inter-sample peaks beyond safe headroom. True-peak-check the gain-adjusted file and the delivery encode; do not hide clipping with a limiter in only one condition.

The codec is part of only one condition

Comparing an uncompressed reference with a compressed AI render tests both processing and codec behavior. Encode both versions through the same final path, then state that codec in the preview.

Order reveals the answer

If every listener hears the reference first, the second file may be judged as a change rather than on its own merits. Randomize or counterbalance order and avoid labels such as “clean” or “enhanced.”

How do I troubleshoot a preview that still sounds uneven?

Integrated readings match, but one file still seems louder

Inspect short-term and momentary loudness around the exact events listeners mention. A matched average can contain different local dynamics; report that behavior rather than repeatedly moving the overall gain by ear.

The matched file clips only in the player

Check true peak after the player’s decode stage and disable any playback enhancement, replay-gain mode, or automatic normalization. If the delivery path cannot provide adequate headroom, lower the common target and repeat the same procedure for both files.

Listeners hear a timing shift

Measure processing latency and verify the alignment rule. If latency is intrinsic to the AI system, disclose it and use a fixed comparison window so timing is not silently corrected in one condition.

Results change between devices

Verify that both files use the same channel layout and that the device is not applying different resampling, mono summing, equalization, or spatial effects. Record the approved playback chain and ask listeners not to use additional enhancement modes.

Listeners cannot agree on a preference

That is a valid outcome, not a reason to discard the test. Report the separate artifact, intelligibility, dynamics, and preference responses, along with excerpt identity and order, so disagreement can be tied to content or listener task.

What is the minimum defensible setup?

For a credible public preview, render one locked excerpt as A and B, measure both with the same BS.1770-aligned meter, apply one declared loudness target and tolerance, verify true peak after encoding, keep the playback chain identical, randomize or counterbalance order, and publish the settings and measurements. Anything less can still be a useful demonstration, but it should not be presented as evidence that the AI treatment itself sounds better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is -23 LUFS mandatory for every AI-audio preview?

No. It is the EBU R 128 v5.0 average programme recommendation, not a universal rule for internet demos or internal experiments. Choose a target that fits the distribution context and state it beside the player.

Can I tell listeners which sample was processed?

You can, but that changes the task from a blinded comparison to a disclosed demonstration. If disclosure is necessary for accessibility or training, run a separate concealed condition when you want preference results that are less influenced by expectation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the AI processor changes the file duration?

Record the latency or duration change and define a fixed listening window before collecting ratings. Do not silently trim only one version, because the edit itself can become the perceived difference.

How many listeners do I need for a useful preview?

The cited listening methodologies do not prescribe one universal sample size for AI previews. Report how many listeners participated, how many responses each excerpt received, and the individual or grouped results instead of implying that an unstated threshold proves superiority.
