You can use FFmpeg to loop authorized sleep music, rain recordings, and visuals into a YouTube livestream, but a 24/7 broadcast needs more than a loop flag: you must configure YouTube ingest, match encoder settings to your connection, test transitions, and plan for process failures and recording. This guide gives you the setup decisions and checks without presenting an unverified one-size-fits-all command as tested.
Before you start: confirm rights and prepare your media
Use media licensed for continuous livestreaming
Use music, rain recordings, and visuals only when you have rights that cover public YouTube livestreaming. A “royalty free” label by itself does not establish permission for continuous streaming. Check the license for livestream use, attribution, monetization, and restrictions on looping or redistribution. YouTube identifies an active stream receiving a copyright strike and a stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast as copyright-restriction cases: YouTube live-stream restrictions.
Check durations, format, and loop seams
Decide whether your audio and visual are one combined file or separate inputs. With separate sources, their durations and loop points can differ: the audio may end before the visual, creating silence or a perceptible break. Listen and watch through several transitions, check sync and levels, and confirm that the result behaves as intended before going public. Loop-boundary behavior depends on the media and command configuration; the documented guidance does not validate one universal end-to-end command for separate loops, encoding, and recovery.
Understand FFmpeg looping and real-time pacing
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an input option for looping an input indefinitely. The -re option (equivalent to -readrate 1) reads file input at its native rate. FFmpeg says pacing can be useful when output flow speed matters, such as live streaming, and describes it mainly as a way to simulate a capture device from a file. Place input options before the relevant -i and verify behavior with your installed FFmpeg version. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Use real-time pacing for file input where appropriate; do not apply it carelessly to an actual live input. A correct loop flag alone does not provide automatic recovery if FFmpeg exits, nor does it prove that audio and video will remain continuous. Test the exact combination of inputs, output, and installed build you plan to use.
Choose an ingest method and encoder settings
RTMP or RTMPS: the general-purpose route
YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. The listed audio bitrates are 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. The settings page does not state a publication year, so treat these as the guidance displayed there and check it again when configuring your stream: YouTube encoder settings.

Run an upload speed test and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably; do not select a higher resolution just because it is available. Test before launch and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. Your FFmpeg binary’s support for a protocol, including RTMPS, depends on how that binary was built; FFmpeg documents its available protocols at FFmpeg protocols.
HLS: use only when its constraints fit
YouTube also accepts HLS ingest, but its requirements are more involved: TS segments, segment durations from one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Consider it only if your encoder supports the required form and you have a reason to accept its latency and implementation complexity. Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the livestream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and locate its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the server URL and key in your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, shell history, or public logs. If it is compromised, YouTube documents how to manage or reset it in Manage live stream settings.
- Match output to current platform guidance. Configure your output for the selected ingest protocol, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, audio codec, and bitrate. Verify the exact values in YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than assuming settings from an old example remain appropriate.
- Start privately or test before going public. Check the preview, confirm that audio is audible and continuous, and inspect stream health before relying on the setup for a long run.
Test, monitor, and plan for a true 24/7 run
Test with representative content
Use the same kind of audio and visual motion you intend to broadcast. Watch and listen across loop transitions, check for silence, clipping, sync problems, or a frozen image, and review YouTube’s stream-health notices. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring quality during an event; its live-streaming tips also say expensive equipment is not required.
Plan for failures and recovery
A process can stop, a connection can fail, or YouTube can drop the stream. For continuous operation, decide how you will notice the interruption, restart FFmpeg, inspect logs, and verify that YouTube is receiving the stream again. These are operational design needs, not automatic guarantees provided by the FFmpeg loop option or YouTube ingest. Test restart behavior before depending on the broadcast.

Decide how you will retain a recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single continuous 24-hour broadcast is outside that stated condition, so do not count on YouTube automatically retaining the full day. If you need a complete recording, plan a separate archive workflow, such as recording locally or splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance.
