To convert a date stored as text, try =DATEVALUE(A2) in a helper column, then format the result with Format > Number > Date. This works only when Sheets recognizes the text as a date; accepted formats can depend on the spreadsheet’s region and language settings. If the date is ambiguous or won’t parse, confirm its intended order and build a date from its numeric year, month, and day instead.
Convert a recognized text date with DATEVALUE

Keep the original text column and enter
=DATEVALUE(A2)in an empty helper column beside the first value. -
Check that the result represents the intended calendar date. If it does, copy the formula down for the rest of the rows.

Select the converted results and choose Format > Number > Date. For a different display, choose Format > Number > Custom date and time and select a pattern.

DATEVALUE parses a text string into a date value (an integer serial number) that formulas can use. It does not accept a numeric date value as its input, and it does not understand every date-like string. Google notes that recognized formats can depend on spreadsheet region and language settings. Google’s DATEVALUE reference explains the function’s input and behavior; Google’s number-formatting guidance covers date display options.
Choose the right formula for the source data

Use VALUE when Sheets recognizes the whole string
=VALUE(A2) can convert text that Sheets understands as a date, time, or number. Its result is numeric, so apply a date format if the parsed value is a date. An error means Sheets does not recognize the input in that context.
Use DATE when you can identify each component
If the source has a known, consistent structure, extract numeric components and assemble them in year-month-day order: =DATE(year_cell,month_cell,day_cell). For example, if separate cells contain the year, month, and day, use =DATE(B2,C2,D2). Google documents that DATE uses a date system counting days from December 30, 1899, truncates decimal components, and normalizes out-of-range month and day values. Validate extracted components separately; DATE is not an input-validation function.

Use TEXT only to create a text display
For a date value in B2 that you want to display as year-month-day text, use =TEXT(B2,"yyyy-mm-dd"). Patterns can include d, dd, mmm, mmmm, yy, and yyyy. Because the result is text, use the original date value for date arithmetic and sorting as dates.
Handle separators and convert a consistent column
If DATEVALUE fails because the source uses an unfamiliar separator, first confirm the components’ order and then normalize the separator. For example, a Google Sheets Editors Community answer demonstrates this array formula for consistently structured, dot-separated date strings:

The formula replaces periods with slashes, then asks VALUE to parse the result; blank input stays blank. It is a community-contributed example, not a universal solution or an official Google recipe. It is suitable only when the separator and date order are known and the resulting strings are recognized by the sheet. See the community example. Test a few rows before applying it to a full column, and format its output as a date.
Resolve ambiguous dates before converting
A string such as 03/04/2026 could mean March 4 or April 3. The characters alone do not identify the intended date. Confirm the source convention with the data owner or original file, then check that the spreadsheet’s locale is appropriate before relying on automatic parsing.
Changing the spreadsheet locale can change how ambiguous day/month strings are interpreted. Preserve the original text first and verify representative values before making a locale change. Google’s DATEVALUE documentation also notes that recognized formats can vary with region and language settings.

Troubleshoot dates Sheets does not recognize
DATEVALUE returns #VALUE!

Confirm that the cell contains text rather than an already-numeric date value;
DATEVALUEexpects a string. -
Check the separator and component order against the source’s convention. A string may look like a date but use a format Sheets does not recognize.

Check the spreadsheet’s region and language settings, then test one representative entry in an empty cell before filling the formula down.

Choosing Date format does not convert the text
Number formatting controls how a stored numeric value appears; it does not parse arbitrary text. Convert the source with DATEVALUE, VALUE, or DATE first, then format the numeric result.
The result parses but may be the wrong day or month
Do not assume a successful parse proves the interpretation is correct. Check ambiguous examples and values near month and year boundaries against the source convention. If the order is known but automatic parsing is unreliable, extract the components and use DATE.
Verify the converted values before using them

Keep the source strings until you have checked the helper-column results.

Compare several entries with the intended calendar dates, including ambiguous dates and dates near a month or year boundary.
