Use the pdf2docx Python package for a normal PDF-to-Word conversion. It combines PyMuPDF for reading the PDF, layout rules for interpreting its structure, and python-docx for writing the DOCX file. Install it with pip install pdf2docx, create a Converter, call convert(), and close the converter. You can limit the job to a page range or an explicit list, supply a password for an encrypted file, and enable multiprocessing for long continuous documents. A scanned, image-only PDF needs OCR first or an OCR-assisted workflow; conversion alone cannot invent an editable text layer. Always inspect the resulting DOCX because tables, unusual fonts, graphics, reading order, and OCR output may need correction.

What does PDF-to-DOCX conversion with Python actually do?

pdf2docx is the documented Python route for turning a PDF into an editable Word document. It uses PyMuPDF to extract PDF objects and text, applies parsing rules to infer paragraphs, columns, tables, and other layout relationships, then generates a DOCX through python-docx. The result is a reconstructed document, not a pixel-for-pixel copy of every page.

This distinction matters because PDF stores a fixed visual arrangement, while DOCX stores editable runs, paragraphs, tables, and drawing objects. A simple text report usually converts cleanly. A magazine-style page, engineering drawing, unusual font, vector-heavy chart, or tightly positioned form can require manual cleanup after conversion.

How do I install the Python PDF converter?

Install the package in the same virtual environment that will run your script. The package and its documented dependencies provide the PDF parser and DOCX writer.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Create or activate a virtual environment for the project.
  2. Install the converter:
pip install pdf2docx

Then verify that the interpreter used to run your script can import the package:

python -c "from pdf2docx import Converter; print('pdf2docx is ready')"

Use a writable output directory and make sure the input PDF is not locked by another application. For automated jobs, use absolute paths or build paths with pathlib so that a change in the current working directory does not silently send the DOCX somewhere unexpected.

How do I convert an entire PDF to DOCX?

For an ordinary, text-based PDF, the complete workflow is to construct Converter, call convert with the output path, and close the converter. The default conversion covers all pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
from pdf2docx import Converter

pdf_file = "input.pdf"
docx_file = "output.docx"

cv = Converter(pdf_file)
try:
    cv.convert(docx_file) # all pages by default
finally:
    cv.close()

The finally block is important in scripts that may fail partway through parsing. It closes file handles and releases resources even when an exception is raised. Do not open the generated DOCX for editing until convert has returned successfully; a partially written file is not a reliable result.

A documented shorthand is the parse function:

from pdf2docx import parse

parse("input.pdf", "output.docx")

The Converter form is preferable when you need page selection, a password, multiprocessing, or explicit lifecycle control.

How do I convert only selected PDF pages?

Use start and end for a continuous section, or pass pages for an explicit list of zero-based page indexes. This avoids creating a full DOCX when you need only an appendix, a chapter, or a few evidence pages.

Convert a continuous range

from pdf2docx import Converter

cv = Converter("input.pdf")
try:
    cv.convert("chapter.docx", start=10, end=20)
finally:
    cv.close()

The range arguments identify the beginning and end of the continuous run according to the package API. Confirm the intended boundary with a small test file before processing a large batch, especially when your source document uses a cover or unnumbered front matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convert specific pages

from pdf2docx import Converter

cv = Converter("input.pdf")
try:
    cv.convert("selected.docx", pages=[0, 2, 4])
finally:
    cv.close()

The list is zero-based: 0 means the first PDF page, 2 the third, and 4 the fifth. The order in the list determines the order written to the DOCX, so you can assemble a smaller document from nonadjacent pages. Keep the source PDF unchanged while you verify that the selected indexes correspond to the pages you intend.

How can I speed up conversion of a large PDF?

For a long continuous page range, enable the package’s multiprocessing option. You can let it choose the available worker count or provide cpu_count explicitly.

from pdf2docx import Converter

cv = Converter("large-report.pdf")
try:
    cv.convert(
        "large-report.docx",
        multi_processing=True,
        cpu_count=4,
    )
finally:
    cv.close()

Multiprocessing is most useful when the work is CPU-bound and the input is large. It is not a guarantee of faster completion: process startup, disk speed, memory pressure, and PDF complexity all affect the result. Test the setting on a representative subset, and avoid launching several high-worker conversions simultaneously on a small machine. The documented option is intended for continuous page ranges; for a handful of unrelated pages, explicit selection may be simpler than parallelizing the job.

How do I convert a password-protected PDF?

Pass the PDF password when constructing Converter. The password belongs in the constructor, not in convert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
from pdf2docx import Converter

pdf_file = "protected.pdf"
docx_file = "protected.docx"
pdf_password = "correct-horse-battery-staple"

cv = Converter(pdf_file, pdf_password)
try:
    cv.convert(docx_file)
finally:
    cv.close()

If the password is wrong, the PDF cannot be decrypted and conversion will fail before a useful DOCX is produced. Do not hard-code credentials in source code that is committed to a repository; obtain them from a protected environment variable or secret store. A PDF can also have permissions that restrict editing or copying even after it opens. In that case, confirm that you are authorized to process the file and test whether the parser can read its content.

How do I convert a scanned PDF into an editable Word file?

A scan is usually a set of page images with no text layer. pdf2docx can reconstruct a DOCX from extractable PDF content, but it cannot make image pixels editable without OCR. First create or use an OCR-assisted text layer, then convert and proofread the result.

Check whether a text layer exists

Open a page with PyMuPDF and inspect ordinary text extraction. Empty or nearly empty output on pages that visibly contain words is a strong sign that the document is image-only.

import fitz  # PyMuPDF

doc = fitz.open("scan.pdf")
for number, page in enumerate(doc):
    text = page.get_text("text").strip()
    print(number, len(text), "characters")
doc.close()

Use PyMuPDF’s OCR-assisted extraction

PyMuPDF exposes page.get_textpage_ocr(); pass the resulting text page to page.get_text(textpage=...). OCR requires a supported OCR engine and the appropriate language data. The document API also exposes use_ocr, force_ocr, ocr_language, and ocr_dpi controls for OCR-aware processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import fitz  # PyMuPDF

doc = fitz.open("scan.pdf")
page = doc[0]
tp = page.get_textpage_ocr(
    language="eng",
    dpi=300,
    full=True,
)
text = page.get_text(textpage=tp)
print(text)
doc.close()

The exact OCR engine and language data must be installed for your environment. The PyMuPDF project documents Tesseract language data for its built-in OCR path and identifies RapidOCR as an alternative pip-installable ONNX-based engine. Choose the language matching the scan; using an English model on a multilingual page will produce avoidable errors.

Put the OCR result into the conversion workflow

For a repeatable production process, OCR the pages with the required language and resolution, preserve the OCR text layer in a searchable PDF (or generate a DOCX directly from the OCR text and coordinates), and then run pdf2docx on the searchable version. If the OCR tool only returns plain text, it does not preserve enough positional information for faithful tables and columns; treat the resulting DOCX as a draft and rebuild complex sections manually.

Scan quality controls accuracy more than the conversion command. Skewed pages, faint ink, bleed-through, handwriting, stamps, and low resolution can all create incorrect words. Search the DOCX for common OCR confusions, compare every number and name with the scan, and inspect headings, footnotes, and table boundaries before sharing the file.

What layout should I expect in the generated DOCX?

Expect an editable approximation of the PDF’s structure, not a guarantee of identical pagination. The parser must infer reading order and object boundaries from fixed-position elements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Paragraphs and headings: ordinary single-column text generally transfers well, while decorative spacing and floating text boxes may move.
  • Columns: reading order can be ambiguous when columns contain overlapping or unusual positioning.
  • Tables: visible grid lines and regular cells are easier to reconstruct than borderless tables, merged cells, or tables containing nested graphics.
  • Fonts: a missing or unusual font can trigger substitution, changing line breaks and page count.
  • Graphics: vector drawings and positioned images may be represented differently in Word, even when they look correct in the PDF.
  • Forms and annotations: interactive PDF fields, comments, and signature behavior are not necessarily reproduced as equivalent Word controls.

Review the DOCX at the intended viewing size. Check headings, list numbering, table totals, hyperlinks, page breaks, headers and footers, and any content that must remain legally or numerically exact. The cited documentation describes conversion mechanics but does not establish a universal accuracy, speed, or layout-fidelity benchmark, so avoid treating one successful file as a guarantee for every PDF.

Which Python workflow fits my PDF?

PDF situation Recommended call Important qualification
Text-based PDF, all pages Converter(pdf).convert(docx) Default conversion processes all pages.
One continuous section convert(docx, start=..., end=...) Confirm the range boundaries against the source pagination.
Nonadjacent pages convert(docx, pages=[...]) Indexes are zero-based and list order controls output order.
Long continuous document multi_processing=True, optional cpu_count Throughput depends on hardware, storage, and document complexity; benchmark your workload.
Password-protected PDF Converter(pdf, password) You need the correct password and authorization to process the file.
Image-only scan OCR first, then convert OCR engine, language data, resolution, and scan quality determine text accuracy.

How do I make a conversion script safer for repeated jobs?

Use explicit input and output paths, close every converter, and fail loudly when the output is missing or suspiciously small. A batch script should write to a temporary name and rename it only after conversion succeeds, preventing a downstream process from consuming a partial document.

from pathlib import Path
from pdf2docx import Converter

source = Path("input.pdf").resolve()
target = Path("output.docx").resolve()
temporary = target.with_suffix(".partial.docx")

if not source.is_file():
    raise FileNotFoundError(source)

cv = Converter(str(source))
try:
    cv.convert(str(temporary))
finally:
    cv.close()

temporary.replace(target)
print(f"Created {target}")

Add logging around each file, page selection, password-handling branch, and OCR decision. Keep the original PDF so that a reviewer can compare the DOCX with its source. For regulated or high-value material, retain a human approval step rather than silently overwriting an earlier version.

What should I do when conversion fails or looks wrong?

The import or installation fails

Check that pip and python point to the same environment, then rerun the installation inside that environment. A small import test identifies interpreter mismatches before you process any files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The output DOCX is empty

Test text extraction with PyMuPDF. If pages contain images rather than a text layer, perform OCR and convert the searchable result instead of repeating the same command.

Only some pages are missing

Check zero-based indexes and the selected range. Create a small DOCX from one known page, compare it with the PDF, and expand the selection only after the mapping is correct.

Tables or columns are scrambled

Inspect the source for borderless cells, floating objects, overlapping text, or unusual reading order. Try converting a smaller section, then repair the affected table in Word or generate that section separately from structured source data.

The file opens but formatting is unacceptable

Check fonts, page size, headers, footers, and graphics first. Conversion reconstructs layout; it does not promise pixel identity. If visual fidelity is more important than editability, keep the original PDF as the authoritative presentation copy and use the DOCX for text edits only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PDF-to-DOCX with Python suitable for automation?

Yes, when inputs are predominantly text-based and you can validate the output. The API supports repeatable paths, page filtering, passwords, and multiprocessing, making it practical for batch jobs. Automation becomes riskier when scans, multilingual OCR, complex tables, or legal formatting are involved; route those files through OCR and human review rather than assuming that a successful return from convert() means the content is correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a PDF to DOCX without installing Microsoft Word?

Yes. The Python package writes the DOCX file through python-docx, so Microsoft Word is not required on the conversion machine. You still need a DOCX-compatible editor or viewer to inspect and revise the result.

Are PDF page numbers the same as the indexes used by pdf2docx?

No. The pages option uses zero-based indexes, so the first page is index 0. Printed page labels inside a PDF can also restart or skip numbers, which is why you should verify a sample page before batching a selection.

Can OCR preserve the exact formatting of a scanned form?

Not reliably. OCR can supply editable words, but scans with checkboxes, handwriting, stamps, skew, or complex tables require visual proofreading and often manual reconstruction of the form layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does multiprocessing always make pdf2docx faster?

No. Worker startup, available CPU cores, memory, storage speed, and page complexity determine the outcome. Measure a representative file on your own machine before enabling a high worker count for every job.
