Use the Mac apps already installed for most everyday conversions: Preview converts images, Finder Quick Actions quickly changes an image format or size, and QuickTime Player exports video or extracts an AAC audio track. The important limitation is that QuickTime exports video as a .mov file, not an MP4 video. For images, Preview also supports batch conversion and gives you quality, PDF-filter, and encryption controls.
Choose the workflow according to your source file, the format your destination requires, the desired resolution or file size, codec compatibility, and whether you must retain transparency or metadata.
Which Mac tool should I use for each conversion?
The fastest choice depends on what you are converting and how much control you need.

Apple’s built-in tools do not document a general conversion path for every audio format, such as arbitrary WAV, FLAC, and MP3 conversions. Do not assume that Audio Only will produce MP3 or FLAC; it is documented as AAC in an MPEG-4 container.

How do I convert an image with Preview?
Preview is the best built-in option when you need to select a precise output type, adjust JPEG quality, apply a PDF filter, encrypt a PDF, or process multiple files.
- Open the image in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Open the Format menu and select HEIC, JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG, or TIFF.
- If the format menu does not show a specialized or older option you need, hold the Option key while opening the menu. Additional formats may appear.
- For JPEG or JPEG-2000, adjust the quality control when it is available. Higher quality generally produces a larger file; lower quality produces a smaller file with more compression.
- For PDF, optionally choose a Quartz filter and enable encryption if the document requires protection.
- Enter a new filename, choose the destination, and click Save.
Exporting creates a converted copy at the name and location you specify. Keep the original until you have checked the new file in the application or service that will receive it.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?
Open the HEIC image in Preview, choose File > Export, select JPEG or PNG, choose a destination, and save. JPEG is commonly useful when a service accepts photographs but not HEIC; PNG is preferable when you need lossless image data or transparency support from the destination.

- Open the images so they appear together in one Preview window. You can open them from Finder or open one and add the others to that window.
- Show the sidebar if it is hidden, then select the images you want to convert. Use the usual multi-selection gesture to select more than one.
- Choose File > Export, select the destination format, and set quality when offered.
- Choose a destination and save. Preview exports the selected images using the format and settings you chose.
Batch export is useful when every selected file should receive the same format and quality treatment. If different images need different settings, export them in separate selections.

How can I convert an image quickly in Finder?
Finder’s Convert Image Quick Action is the shortest route for a single image or a simple size reduction.
- In Finder, select the image.
- Control-click the file.
- Choose Quick Actions > More > Convert Image.
- Choose the output format and a size.
- Confirm the action and inspect the resulting file in Finder.
Apple gives conversion from an iPhone .heic image to .jpeg or .png as an example. Use Preview instead when you need JPEG quality control, PDF filters, encryption, specialized formats, or batch selection.
How do I export a smaller video on a Mac?
QuickTime Player exports a movie at a selected resolution. The output is a QuickTime movie (.mov) encoded with H.264 or HEVC (H.265), and the exact resolution and data rate depend on the source.

- Open the movie by double-clicking it in Finder, or open QuickTime Player and choose File > Open File.
- Choose File > Export As.
- Select 4K, 1080p, 720p, or 480p, if that choice is available for the source.
- For 4K or 1080p exports, choose Smaller File Size for HEVC or Greater Compatibility for H.264 when QuickTime presents those choices.
- Enter a filename, choose a destination, and save.
- Play the exported file and verify its dimensions, sound, and compatibility before deleting the source.

These are export settings, not guarantees that every source can be enlarged to that resolution. A lower-resolution source cannot gain real detail by being exported at a higher setting, and QuickTime may restrict choices based on the original movie.

What is the difference between HEVC and H.264 in QuickTime?
HEVC usually targets a smaller file at a comparable visual quality, while H.264 is accepted by a broader range of older players and services. Choose Smaller File Size when storage or upload size matters and the recipient supports HEVC; choose Greater Compatibility when you do not control the playback environment.
If the source movie has an alpha channel, QuickTime may display a Preserve Transparency checkbox when HEVC is selected. Enable it only when the destination needs the transparent areas; otherwise, the resulting file can be larger than necessary.
Can I turn a video into an audio file without installing software?
Yes. QuickTime Player’s built-in Audio Only export creates an MPEG-4 audio file containing an AAC track.
- Open the movie in QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > Export As > Audio Only.
- Choose the filename and destination.
- Save, then open the resulting MPEG-4 audio file in the player or service where you intend to use it.
This workflow extracts the movie’s audio; it does not document a choice of MP3, WAV, or FLAC output. If a service specifically requires one of those formats, check its accepted formats before relying on QuickTime’s Audio Only file.

How do I trim an image, audio file, or video on a Mac?
Finder Quick Actions include Trim for movie and audio files. You can preview the selection, then either replace the original or create a new file.
- Select the audio or movie file in Finder.
- Control-click it and choose Quick Actions > Trim.
- Drag the start and end handles to define the section you want to keep.
- Preview the result.
- Choose whether to replace the original or save a new file, then confirm.
For more familiar playback controls, double-click the file to open it in QuickTime Player and use its trimming command. Make a new file when you may need the untrimmed recording later.

Because QuickTime Player does not export movie video as MP4. Its documented video export is a QuickTime movie (.mov) using H.264 or HEVC.
Changing the filename extension from .mov to .mp4 does not convert the container and can make the file confusing or unusable. If the receiving service requires MP4 specifically, QuickTime alone does not satisfy that requirement; use a separately verified converter that supports MP4 and check its codec and privacy implications.

What should I do when an export option is missing?
- The resolution is unavailable: QuickTime’s choices are subject to the source movie. Try a setting that does not exceed the source’s practical dimensions.
- HEVC or transparency controls are absent: Those controls appear only for applicable sources and export settings.
- Audio Only is unavailable: Confirm that the file contains an audio track and that it opened successfully in QuickTime Player.
- An image format is missing in Preview: Hold Option while opening the Format menu to reveal additional specialized or older formats.
- The converted file is too large: For images, lower JPEG quality or choose a smaller Finder size. For video, use a lower export resolution or HEVC when the recipient supports it.
- The recipient cannot open the file: Re-export video with H.264 using Greater Compatibility, or choose a more widely accepted image format such as JPEG or PNG.
How should I choose a format before converting?
Start with the destination’s requirement rather than the source extension. Then check the following factors.
- Source type: A camera photo, screenshot, movie, and voice recording may expose different export choices.
- Required destination format: Confirm whether the recipient accepts HEIC, JPEG, PNG, PDF, MOV, or AAC in an MPEG-4 file.
- Resolution or file-size target: Lower dimensions reduce video size; JPEG quality and Finder size presets affect image size.
- Codec compatibility: HEVC can be smaller, while H.264 is generally the safer choice for older or unknown playback systems.
- Batch versus one-file processing: Preview handles a selected group; Finder Quick Actions are convenient for individual files.
- Transparency and metadata: Preserve transparency when QuickTime offers that checkbox for an alpha-channel movie, and test converted images if the destination depends on transparency or embedded information.
What should I check after conversion?
- Open the new file rather than trusting its extension.
- Confirm that the image orientation, colors, transparency, or PDF security settings are as expected.
- For video, check picture dimensions, sound, synchronization, and playback in the destination app.
- For Audio Only exports, verify that the file contains the expected AAC track and that its duration matches the source section.
- Keep the original until the converted copy has passed the destination’s upload or playback test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can QuickTime Player convert a video directly to MP3?
No MP3 output is documented in QuickTime Player’s Audio Only export. Apple documents an MPEG-4 audio file with an AAC track, so an MP3-specific requirement needs a separate, MP3-capable converter.
Can I convert a whole folder of images with Finder Quick Actions?
The documented Finder command is a file-based Quick Action. For a group that needs the same output format, open the images together in Preview and export the selected sidebar items.

Will exporting a video at 4K improve a low-resolution original?
No. The 4K setting can be limited by the source, and exporting a smaller movie at a higher nominal resolution does not recreate missing detail. Choose the resolution that matches the source and the destination’s needs.
Where does Preview save a converted image?
Preview uses the filename and destination you enter in its Export dialog. Selecting a new name helps keep the converted copy alongside the original without overwriting it.
