Yes—but only for eligible audio files you own or are authorized to reproduce. Apple’s Music app on Mac and iTunes for Windows can create an MP3 copy of a local track in your library, an imported folder, or a disk. The original remains available beside the new file.
An Apple Music subscription download is different. Apple documents offline playback inside the Apple Music app, not an official way to export those downloaded tracks as ordinary, unprotected MP3 files. The three practical outcomes below therefore cover the two supported conversion paths and the correct option when your source is a subscription download, without treating unverified DRM-removal tools as equivalent methods.
What can you actually convert to MP3?
The first step is identifying what kind of “Apple Music” audio you have. The app can convert an eligible local audio file, but a subscription download is licensed for playback in Apple Music and is not established by Apple as an MP3-export source.
| Source on your device | Official Apple-supported result | Best choice |
|---|---|---|
| Local, unprotected file in the Music library, a folder, or a disk | Create an MP3 copy with the Music app on Mac or iTunes for Windows | Use Method 1 or Method 2 |
| Older purchase encoded as Protected AAC | Apple says it cannot be converted using these instructions | Locate an authorized, non-protected source instead |
| Apple Music subscription download | Download for offline listening in Apple Music; no documented MP3 export workflow | Use Method 3 for offline playback |
Apple’s conversion pages also limit reproduction to material that is non-copyrighted, owned by you, or otherwise authorized or legally permitted. A conversion button does not grant permission to copy someone else’s recording.

Quick checklist before you start
- Identify whether the item is a local file, a purchased download, or an Apple Music subscription item.
- Confirm that you own the recording or have permission to reproduce it.
- Make sure the source is available on the computer, not merely listed in a cloud library.
- Keep the original file; conversion creates a second copy.
- Decide where the MP3 will be played and verify that device’s specifications.
- If the file is protected, stop and find an authorized, non-protected copy rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
How to tell which kind of track you have
Select the item and inspect its information in Music or iTunes. A local file has a file location you can access on the computer or an attached disk. A subscription item may show Apple Music availability instead of a normal local path, or it may require the account that added it. The exact labels vary by software version, but the key question is whether you can access an ordinary source file that you are allowed to reproduce.
How do I convert a local song to MP3 on a Mac?
Use the Music app’s import encoder, then create an MP3 version from the selected track. This works for eligible files; it does not bypass protection on subscription downloads or older Protected AAC purchases.
1. Set MP3 as the import encoder
- Open the Music app on your Mac.
- Choose Music > Settings.
- Open the Files tab and select Import Settings.
- Open the encoding-format menu and choose MP3, if it is offered.
- Confirm the setting, then close the preferences window.
The encoder setting controls the format used when Music creates the new copy. It does not change the format of existing files or upgrade their sound quality. Set it before converting; changing the preference later does not retroactively alter files already created.
2. Select the source track
In your Music library, select the song you are authorized to reproduce. If the file is still in a folder or on a disk, import it into Music first, or use Apple’s documented import-and-convert workflow for that location. Confirm that the item is a local file rather than a cloud-only subscription download.
If the source is on an external disk, keep that disk connected until the import and conversion finish. If Music is only referencing the file’s old location, moving or disconnecting the disk can make the item unavailable. For a large collection, convert a single test track first and verify that the resulting file opens before processing everything.
3. Create the MP3 copy
- With the eligible song selected, choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version.
- Wait for Music to finish processing. Large files or multiple selections can take longer than a single short track.
- Look beside the original in your library. Music places the converted copy alongside the source rather than replacing it.
You can now locate the new MP3 through the song’s file information or the library folder and copy it to an authorized device or application that accepts MP3 audio.
Converting several Mac tracks at once
You can select multiple eligible songs before opening the Convert menu. This is useful for a short album or a group of personal recordings, but inspect the results afterward. A mixed selection can include a protected item, a missing local file, or a subscription track that cannot be processed. Keep the original entries so you can compare names and locations and remove only copies you have verified.

Windows uses the same basic process, but the settings are in iTunes preferences. Set the encoder first, select an eligible track, and create the MP3 version from the File menu.
1. Choose the MP3 encoder
- Open iTunes for Windows.
- Choose Edit > Preferences.
- On the General tab, select Import Settings.
- Choose the desired encoder and select MP3.
- Confirm the setting and close the preferences.
The preference applies to new conversions. It does not convert files already in the library, and it does not remove protection from a purchased or subscribed item.

2. Convert the selected track
- Select the authorized, eligible song in your iTunes library.
- Choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version.
- Allow iTunes to finish. The converted copy appears alongside the original in the library.
If the source is stored outside the library, import it into iTunes first or follow Apple’s instructions for converting a file from a folder or disk. The procedure creates a second file; it does not delete or overwrite the source.
Windows batch conversion and file locations
Multiple selected tracks can be converted in one operation when they are eligible. Afterward, inspect the new entries and their file locations rather than assuming every selected item succeeded. If the source is on removable storage, leave it connected until iTunes finishes. Copy the resulting MP3s to a separate destination folder if you are preparing them for another device; this keeps the library originals easier to identify.

What is the third method if my track is an Apple Music subscription download?
There is no verified Apple workflow that turns an Apple Music subscription download into a standalone MP3. The supported alternative is to download the track for offline playback and keep listening inside Apple Music.
Use offline playback instead of MP3 export
- Open Apple Music on a supported device and sign in to the subscription that provides the track.
- Add the song, album, or playlist to your library if necessary.
- Use the app’s download control to save it for offline listening.
- Play the downloaded item from Apple Music when you do not have an internet connection.
This download is tied to Apple Music’s playback system and subscription terms. It should not be described as an unprotected MP3, and Apple’s conversion pages do not provide a supported command for exporting it. If the subscription or account access changes, offline availability follows the service’s rules rather than becoming a permanent file you can keep elsewhere.
Why online “Apple Music to MP3” tools are not a substitute
Commercial downloaders and DRM-removal products make claims that are not validated by Apple’s instructions. Their output, quality, security, continued operation, and authorization can vary, so this guide does not present them as a third official method. Do not assume that a tool is safe merely because it produces a file, or that a successful download is permitted by the recording’s license. If you need a portable MP3, obtain an authorized local source and convert that file instead.
Which method should I use?
Your operating system and the source’s licensing status determine the appropriate path.
| Your situation | Use | What you receive | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible local file on macOS | Music app conversion | A separate MP3 beside the original | Requires an accessible, authorized source |
| Eligible local file on Windows | iTunes conversion | A separate MP3 beside the original | Requires an accessible, authorized source |
| Apple Music subscription track | Apple Music download | Offline playback inside Apple Music, not a standalone MP3 | Remains subject to subscription and app access |
| Older Protected AAC purchase | Neither conversion path | No MP3 under Apple’s documented process | Find an authorized, non-protected source |
Choose conversion when you need a normal file for an MP3-compatible player or application and you have the right to reproduce the source. Choose Apple Music’s download feature when the priority is listening without a connection and you are willing to remain within the Apple Music app.
Why is “Create MP3 Version” missing or unavailable?
The command can be unavailable when no eligible local track is selected, the item is protected, or the encoder was not set correctly. Check these causes in order.
Verify that you selected a real local file
- Click the track and inspect its information to determine whether it is stored locally or is only an Apple Music subscription item.
- If it is in a folder or on a disk, import it into Music or iTunes before converting.
- Make sure the file is not still downloading or unavailable offline.
- Keep external storage connected if the library points to that location.
Check for Protected AAC
Apple specifically says older purchases encoded as Protected AAC cannot be converted with these instructions. The restriction is different from an ordinary AAC or MP3 file. Find an authorized, non-protected copy—such as a file you purchased or created without that protection—rather than trying to force the command.

Confirm the encoder setting
On Mac, return to Music > Settings > Files > Import Settings. On Windows, return to Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings. If MP3 is not selected, choose it, confirm, and then select the source track again.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look for the second copy
Conversion does not replace the original. Sort or search the library for a duplicate entry, inspect each item’s file information, and check the folder that contains the source. A separate copy may have a similar title, so verify the file format before moving or deleting anything.
Check software wording
Apple changes menu labels between operating-system and app versions. If the names differ slightly, look for the equivalent Music or iTunes settings, an import-encoder choice, and the File menu’s conversion command. Do not interpret a changed label as permission to convert a subscription download.
Does converting to MP3 reduce sound quality?
Usually, yes. Apple warns that converting between compressed formats can lose data. MP3 conversion is therefore a compatibility choice, not an audio-quality upgrade.
Lossy source to MP3
If the original is already compressed, creating an MP3 requires another encoding pass. The result can discard additional audio information, even when the new file sounds acceptable for everyday listening. Keep the original file as your archive and use the MP3 only where its compatibility is useful.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Converting to an uncompressed format does not restore detail
Changing a compressed source into an uncompressed format can produce a larger file, but Apple notes that it does not improve the source’s quality. A larger container cannot recreate data that was removed during an earlier compression step.
Avoid unnecessary conversion cycles
Convert once from the best authorized source you have. Repeatedly changing a file from one compressed format to another can introduce further loss without adding information. If you need several destinations, keep one original and create the minimum number of MP3 copies required.
When MP3 is still the practical choice
MP3 remains useful when a car stereo, basic player, older software, or another device does not accept the source format. Make the smallest conversion set you need, retain the original, and avoid repeated conversions between lossy formats.
What files and rights do I need before converting?
You need access to the source file and permission to reproduce it. Apple’s guidance covers non-copyrighted material, material you own, or material you are authorized or legally permitted to reproduce.

- Purchased downloads: Check whether the file is protected. Older Protected AAC purchases cannot be converted under Apple’s documented process.
- Subscription tracks: Offline downloads are for playback under the subscription service, not a documented MP3-export source.
- Shared or borrowed files: Authorization depends on the copyright holder and applicable law; possession of a file alone is not proof of permission to reproduce it.
This is a technical guide, not legal advice. If you are unsure whether a reproduction is permitted in your country or situation, Apple advises seeking legal advice.
How can I use the resulting MP3 on another device?
After conversion, copy the standalone MP3 through the transfer method supported by the destination device or application. Confirm the model’s specifications before transferring: “supports music” does not always mean it accepts every MP3 profile, storage size, or metadata arrangement.
A portable MP3 player can be useful for files you legitimately converted, but hardware cannot remove subscription restrictions or Protected AAC limits. Keep a backup of the original and test one converted file before transferring a large library.
For a watch, car system, or specialized player, check whether the manufacturer requires a particular folder structure or synchronization process. Transfer one known-good file, play it from start to finish, and only then copy a larger batch. This catches compatibility or storage problems without putting your whole library at risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should I preserve when organizing converted files?
Keep the source and converted copies clearly distinguishable. A simple naming or folder convention can prevent accidental deletion of the higher-quality original.
- Retain the original in its existing folder or library location.
- Place MP3 copies in a separate, clearly labeled folder when you are preparing them for another device.
- Check the extension and file information before deleting duplicates.
- Back up both sets if the recordings are difficult to replace.
- Record which files were converted so you do not repeatedly transcode the same source.
Because Apple’s process leaves the source alongside the converted copy, organization is part of the workflow rather than an automatic cleanup step. Do not delete the source immediately after seeing a new library entry; first open the MP3, confirm its location, and test it on the intended player.
What are the three practical outcomes in one view?
- Mac conversion: Set MP3 in Music settings and choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version for an eligible local file.
- Windows conversion: Set MP3 in iTunes import preferences and use the same conversion command for an eligible local file.
- Subscription playback: Download Apple Music content for offline listening in Apple Music; do not represent that download as an exported MP3.
The decisive question is not which converter looks fastest. It is whether the source is an authorized local file that Apple’s app can convert, or a subscription download that remains inside Apple Music.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert an Apple Music song after my subscription ends?
An Apple Music offline download is available only under the service’s playback rules and does not become a normal MP3 when the subscription changes. A separately owned, eligible local file can still be converted with Music or iTunes while you have access to it.

Can I convert several eligible songs at once?
You can select multiple eligible tracks before choosing the Create MP3 Version command. Review the resulting copies afterward so you do not confuse them with the originals or convert a protected item unintentionally.
Why does my MP3 play on a computer but not on an older player?
Device support varies by model, firmware, file system, and storage limits. Check the player’s specification for supported MP3 files and test a single converted track before loading the rest of your collection.
Can I convert a song directly from an external drive?
Yes, Apple’s workflow supports eligible files in a folder or on a disk. Keep the drive connected, import or select the file in Music or iTunes, and verify that the resulting MP3 is stored where you expect.
Does creating an MP3 delete the original?
No. Apple’s process creates a converted copy alongside the source. Confirm the new file plays correctly before moving or deleting either version.
What should I do with an older Protected AAC purchase?
Apple says Protected AAC files cannot be converted with these instructions. Locate an authorized, non-protected copy instead; do not treat the limitation as a reason to bypass protection.
Is there an official third-party converter for subscription downloads?
Apple’s documented pages provide offline playback for subscription downloads, not an MP3-export command. Commercial tools may make their own claims, but their operation, output, security, and authorization are not established by Apple’s instructions.
Why is the MP3 option not listed in Import Settings?
Menu choices can vary by app version. Look for the encoding-format menu in Music or iTunes preferences and choose MP3 if it is offered. If the option remains unavailable, use Apple’s current instructions for your installed version rather than converting a protected or subscription item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Apple’s supported MP3 conversion is for eligible local files you own or are authorized to reproduce: set MP3 as the encoder in Music on Mac or iTunes for Windows, then choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version. The original stays intact, but conversion can reduce quality. Apple Music subscription downloads are for offline playback in Apple Music, not documented standalone MP3 exports.
