Yes. Start music in your chosen app, fold the Galaxy Z Fold8, wake the 5.5-inch Cover Display, and use the app’s playback buttons. If the app is no longer visible, swipe down from the top edge and use Android’s media-player notification card to pause, resume, skip, scrub, or change the audio output when the app exposes those actions. For the smoothest handoff, turn on Settings > Advanced features > Continue Apps on Cover screen. This setting lets compatible music apps remain available after you fold the phone, although the exact buttons and behavior depend on the app and your One UI revision.

What do I need before controlling music on the Cover Display?

You need a Galaxy Z Fold8 with music already playing, a compatible music app, and an audio route such as the phone speakers, Bluetooth headphones, or USB-C audio. Samsung’s current support listing identifies the Fold8 as model SM-F971B and includes Android 17 user-manual files, including a September 2026 revision. A current review describes the phone as running Android 17 with One UI 9, with a 5.5-inch Cover Display and a 7.6-inch Main Display.

  • Music app: Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, a podcast player, or another app that creates an Android media session.
  • Playback: Start a track, album, playlist, or podcast before folding, or start it directly on the Cover Display if the app is available there.
  • Audio connection: The Fold8 has no 3.5 mm headphone jack. Use the built-in speakers, Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, USB-C headphones, or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter.
  • Optional continuity setting: Enable Continue Apps on Cover screen if you want a compatible app to stay open when the phone is folded.

No special control utility is required. The Cover Display and Android’s standard media notification provide the control surfaces.

How do I control music from the Galaxy Z Fold8 cover screen?

Open the music app, begin playback, fold the phone, and wake the Cover Display. When the app remains available, its playback interface supplies the controls; otherwise, use the media-player card in notifications or Quick Settings.

  1. Start playback. Open your music app on the Main Display or Cover Display and play a track. Confirm that sound is coming from the intended output.
  2. Fold the phone. Close the Fold8 so the Cover Display becomes the active screen.
  3. Wake the Cover Display. Press the side key, tap the screen, or use your configured wake gesture.
  4. Use the app interface. If the music app stays open, tap its play/pause button. Depending on the app, you may also see previous, next, a progress scrubber, repeat or shuffle, playlist controls, and an output selector.
  5. Open the system media card when needed. If the app is not visible, swipe down from the top edge of the Cover Display. Find the media-player card in notifications or Quick Settings.
  6. Choose an exposed action. Tap pause or play, previous or next, drag the progress control if available, or select an audio output. Android shows only the actions supplied by the app’s media session.
  7. Return to the app for advanced controls. Tap the media card or app notification to reopen the full player when you need an album view, queue editing, lyrics, or another control that the compact card does not expose.

The Cover Display is designed for quick interactions rather than a full replacement for the 7.6-inch Main Display. It is practical for changing a track or pausing audio without unfolding the phone.

How do I keep a music app open after folding?

Enable Samsung’s Continue Apps on Cover screen option. It allows compatible apps to remain available on the outer display when you fold the Fold8, so you can continue interacting with the player instead of reopening it.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Tap Continue Apps on Cover screen.
  4. Turn on the setting, then review the app list if your software version offers per-app choices.
  5. Enable the music app you use, if it is listed.
  6. Start playback and fold the phone to test the handoff.

Samsung describes this feature as applying to compatible apps, not every installed application. If a service does not appear in the list or does not resume on the Cover Display, use the notification media card instead. Compatibility can change after an app update or a One UI update.

What can the notification media-player card do?

The media-player card is the most consistent fallback because it is generated by Android rather than being tied to one app’s Cover Display layout. It can show playback buttons and an output selector when the active app publishes those controls through its media session.

Action When it appears What to expect
Play or pause Usually available for an active media session Stops or resumes the current item without reopening the app
Previous or next Available when the app exposes skip actions Moves through tracks, episodes, or queued items
Scrubbing Only when the app publishes a seek position Lets you drag through the track or episode; some services provide no scrubber
Audio output When the app and Android expose route selection Switches among available phone, Bluetooth, USB-C, or cast-style outputs shown by the system
Expanded player When the notification is tappable Reopens the app or a larger system player for more controls

Button labels and placement vary. One service may show a three-button row, while another may provide separate skip intervals or no seek bar. The absence of a button generally indicates that the app did not publish that action, not that the Fold8’s Cover Display is defective.

Can I pause or skip songs without opening the Fold8?

Yes. Once playback is active, you can normally pause or resume from the app’s Cover Display interface or the media-player card without unfolding the phone. Skipping and seeking work when the app exposes those actions to Android.

For a quick pause, wake the Cover Display and tap the visible pause control. If the screen is showing another panel, swipe down from the top edge and use the media card. You do not need to navigate back to the Main Display simply to stop audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a track change, use next or previous on the app player or media card. Streaming services may apply their own limits—for example, a service can restrict skips or show a different action for podcasts—so the control shown on the Fold8 reflects the service’s current media session.

How do I get Spotify, YouTube Music, or Apple Music controls on the outer screen?

Start playback in the service, then fold the phone and check whether the app remains open. If it does not, open the notification shade and use the media-player card. There is no complete app-by-app compatibility matrix for the standard Fold8, so behavior can differ by app release and One UI revision.

When the app stays open

With Continue Apps on Cover screen enabled and supported by the service, the player can remain on the outer display. You can use the controls that the app’s compact layout provides, such as play/pause, track navigation, a progress bar, or an output button.

When the app closes or switches away

The media card should still represent the active session if the service continues playback and notifications are permitted. Swipe down on the Cover Display and use that card rather than searching for the app icon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When controls are incomplete

Some apps publish only play, pause, and skip actions. Others add seeking or output selection. Missing controls are app-dependent; reopening the full app is the only way to access functions that the compact player does not publish.

Why don’t my music controls show when I fold the Galaxy Z Fold8?

Most missing-control problems come from an inactive media session, blocked notifications, unsupported app continuity, or a player that has been dismissed. Work through these checks in order.

1. Resume playback in the app

Open the music app on the Main Display or Cover Display and start a track again. Android may remove the media card after playback has been stopped for a while or the app has been closed.

2. Check notifications

Open Settings > Notifications, select the music app, and make sure its notifications are allowed. The media-player card relies on the app’s Android notification and media-session integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Reopen the app on the Cover Display

After folding, wake the outer screen and launch the app again if it is not present. This can establish a fresh session and make the player card reappear.

4. Verify Continue Apps on Cover screen

Return to Settings > Advanced features > Continue Apps on Cover screen. Confirm that the setting is on and that the service is included when your One UI version provides an app list.

5. Expand Quick Settings

Swipe down from the top edge more than once if necessary. Some layouts show the media card in the notification shade first and place additional controls in the expanded Quick Settings view.

6. Check the active audio route

Open the output selector on the media card. If Bluetooth headphones disconnected or a USB-C adapter was removed, playback may have paused or moved to the phone speaker. Reconnect the intended device and select it from the route list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Update the app and phone software

App developers can change media-session behavior, and Samsung can change Cover Display handling in One UI updates. Install available updates, then start playback again before testing the fold transition.

If none of these steps restores controls, the service may not expose a usable Android media session on your current release. In that case, the notification card is still the correct general fallback when it appears; otherwise, control playback from the app itself.

Does the Fold8’s Flex mode panel control music?

Samsung foldables can provide a Flex mode panel with media, volume, and brightness controls in certain folded or partially folded positions. However, the related Samsung guidance available for this behavior is written for the Fold8 Ultra, not as a complete compatibility statement for the standard Galaxy Z Fold8.

Do not assume that every standard Fold8 app will expose the same Flex panel. For the model covered here, rely on the app’s Cover Display interface and the Android media-player card. If a Flex panel appears on your device, treat it as an additional convenience rather than the guaranteed control method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which audio connections work while using the Cover Display?

Cover-screen controls are independent of the physical audio route. You can control playback while listening through the Fold8’s speakers, Bluetooth accessories, or USB-C audio.

Audio route What you need Important limitation
Phone speakers Nothing extra Playback is audible from the handset and can be controlled from the Cover Display
Bluetooth earbuds or headphones Paired Bluetooth device Keep the device connected; route options can change when it disconnects
USB-C headphones USB-C headset Uses the Fold8’s USB-C port
Wired 3.5 mm headphones USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter The Fold8 has no built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack

Changing the output does not require unfolding the phone when the media card provides an output selector. The available routes depend on what is connected and recognized at that moment.

What changes between the Cover Display and Main Display?

The 5.5-inch Cover Display is optimized for short interactions: checking the current item, pausing, skipping, and making a quick output change. The 7.6-inch Main Display gives music apps more room for queues, playlists, album artwork, lyrics, downloads, and account controls.

Folding can therefore change the app’s layout even when playback continues. A full-screen queue may collapse to a compact player, and a control that was visible on the Main Display may be hidden behind the media card or an overflow menu on the outer screen.

Use the Cover Display for transport controls and the Main Display when you need to manage the queue or settings. This division matches Samsung’s description of the outer display as a quick-interaction surface.

How should I set up the Fold8 for reliable one-handed music control?

A small setup routine prevents most interruptions during commuting, exercise, or travel.

  1. Enable Continue Apps on Cover screen and include your preferred music service if the app list allows it.
  2. Allow notifications for that service so Android can create and retain the media card.
  3. Pair Bluetooth headphones or connect USB-C audio before starting playback if you do not want to use the speakers.
  4. Start one track, fold the phone, and verify that the outer-screen player or media card appears.
  5. Test pause, next, and output selection. If a control is missing, note that the app may not publish it rather than assuming the phone is misconfigured.
  6. Keep the app and One UI current, especially after changing music services or installing a major Android update.

This test takes less than a minute and reveals whether your particular app supports continuity and which controls it exposes.

What are the practical control options?

Option Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Music app left open on Cover Display Users who want the app’s own player May show artwork, a scrubber, queue access, and service-specific controls Requires Continue Apps compatibility and can vary after updates
Notification media-player card Fast pause, resume, skip, and output changes Works across many apps and does not require the full app to remain visible Shows only actions published by the active media session
Main Display Queue, playlist, lyrics, and account management Largest layout and fullest app interface Requires unfolding the phone

For most situations, leave the app available through Continue Apps and use the media card whenever the app is not visible. The two surfaces complement each other rather than competing as separate music systems.

What software details matter on the Galaxy Z Fold8?

The device context documented for the Fold8 is Android 17 with One UI 9, and Samsung’s support listing includes a September 2026 manual revision for model SM-F971B. Menu names can change in later revisions, so look for the same Continue Apps on Cover screen function under Advanced features if the wording or order differs.

App developers also control their media-session implementation. A service can add, remove, or rename actions in an update without Samsung changing the phone. When troubleshooting, identify whether the issue affects one app or every app: a single-service problem points to that app’s session or notification settings, while all services suggest a system setting, connection, or software issue.

Can I control podcasts and other audio apps the same way?

Usually, yes, when the app publishes an Android media session. Podcast players, audiobook apps, and local audio players can appear in the same media-player card and provide play, pause, skip, or seek actions.

The labels may represent different functions: a podcast app may offer 15-second forward and backward buttons instead of previous and next track, while an audiobook app may expose chapter navigation. The Fold8 does not translate those actions; it displays what the app supplies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: what is the fastest method?

Start playback, fold the Fold8, wake the Cover Display, and use the visible player. If the app is missing, swipe down and operate the Android media-player card. Turn on Continue Apps on Cover screen for compatible services, and remember that exact controls depend on the app’s media session and your One UI revision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to unfold the phone to change from Bluetooth headphones to the speakers?

Not necessarily. If the active media-player card includes an output selector, open it on the Cover Display and choose an available route. The list changes when a Bluetooth device disconnects or USB-C audio is attached.

Why does one music service show a seek bar while another shows only play and skip?

The app decides which actions it publishes through its Android media session. The Fold8 can display a seek control only when the service provides a seek position, so different apps can legitimately present different cards.

Will a music app remain available on the outer screen after a major One UI update?

Only if the app is still treated as compatible with Continue Apps on Cover screen. Check the Advanced features setting after the update and test the app again, because compatibility and menu presentation can change between revisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the Cover Display control music while the phone is partially folded?

A Flex mode panel may appear in some folded positions, but Samsung’s related guidance is for the Fold8 Ultra rather than a complete standard Fold8 compatibility list. Use the regular Cover Display player or notification media card as the dependable method.
