If an AI agent starts making unexpected changes, contain it in this order: stop new side effects, revoke or narrow its access, preserve an evidence-quality record, assess what already happened, and resume only behind tighter controls. A user-interface “Stop” button may pause generation without cancelling an in-flight tool call, and it normally cannot undo work that has already completed. Verify cancellation and rollback behavior for the specific agent framework, tool host, and downstream service before relying on it. The safest design puts authorization at the tool or service boundary—not in the model’s instructions alone—and requires action-specific approval for destructive, financial, administrative, externally visible, or otherwise irreversible operations.
What should I do if an AI agent goes rogue?
Use a deliberate containment sequence rather than continuing to converse with the agent and hoping it corrects itself. The first objective is to prevent additional side effects; investigation and recovery come after access is constrained and the record is preserved.
- Halt new side effects. Pause the run, disable tool execution in policy middleware, or block the relevant downstream service. If the platform offers separate controls for model generation and tool execution, stop the latter first. Check whether in-flight requests are cancelled or merely prevented from starting; do not assume that a stop control reverses completed actions.
- Constrain access. Revoke credentials and scopes that are no longer needed, switch tools to read-only mode where possible, and separate high-risk tools from routine ones. If a credential may be exposed, disable it and issue a replacement through your normal secret-management process.
- Preserve evidence. Save the task and user instruction, relevant retrieved context, every tool name and parameter, tool output, timestamps, approval decisions, policy results, and operator interventions. Protect secrets and personal data in the log while retaining enough detail to reconstruct events.
- Assess impact. Identify which calls completed, what records or systems changed, whether messages or transactions left your environment, and whether other jobs were triggered. Treat the downstream system’s state as authoritative rather than relying on the agent’s summary.
- Recover deliberately. Use a tested rollback or a documented compensating action where one exists. A rollback path is a control you design and verify; it is not guaranteed by the presence of an agent “undo” command.
- Resume behind controls. Restore only the minimum permissions required, add approval gates for high-impact actions, and exercise the boundaries with safe, instrumented tools and adversarial inputs before returning the agent to normal operation.
Tell incident responders who pressed the stop control, when access was revoked, and which systems were checked. That timeline prevents a second operator from unknowingly re-enabling the same path while the first investigation is still running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I stop an AI agent?
Stop the component that can cause the next side effect, then verify what happened to work already in progress. Depending on the architecture, that may be a run controller, tool gateway, worker queue, credential, or downstream API—not just the chat interface.

Pause the run and gate tools
Use the platform’s pause or cancel control if available, but also disable write-capable tools in the authorization layer. A policy gateway can reject new calls while a worker is being drained. For an agent that can start asynchronous jobs, suspend the queue or disable the service account that submits them.
Verify cancellation semantics
Ask the platform’s current documentation whether cancellation interrupts model generation, prevents queued tool calls, terminates in-flight network requests, or only hides the run from the user interface. A request already accepted by a payment, deployment, messaging, or data service may finish even after the agent displays “stopped.” Record request IDs and check the service directly.
Use an emergency circuit breaker
For repeated or anomalous calls, a circuit breaker can deny tool traffic when volume, destination, error rate, or parameter patterns cross a threshold. Place it outside the model so a prompt, tool result, or generated instruction cannot disable it. Give operators a separate, authenticated path to reopen traffic after review.
What a kill switch cannot promise
There is no universal kill-switch implementation for all agent frameworks. Some systems can terminate a worker; others can only revoke credentials or block the network. Even a successful halt does not erase data already written, messages already delivered, or jobs already handed to another service. Document the exact scope and limitations of your controls.
How do I limit AI agent permissions?
Give each agent and each tool only the authority required for its current task, and enforce that authority independently of the model. A model proposing an action is not authorization to perform it.
Set permissions at the tool and service boundary
Implement authorization in the execution component or downstream service, using the agent identity, tool identity, resource, operation, and parameters. Do not rely on a system prompt that says “never delete” or on a model-generated approval field. The service must reject an unauthorized request even when the model asks confidently.
Separate read from write access
Use distinct tools and credentials for inspection and modification. A reporting agent might receive read-only database queries and a narrowly scoped export destination, while a separate workflow handles updates. Avoid giving one token both broad discovery and destructive capabilities.

Scope by resource, operation, and time
Prefer an allowlist such as “read invoices for this account” over a broad role such as “manage billing.” Limit destinations, file paths, records, and network hosts. Use short-lived credentials and expire elevated access when the task ends. If a task needs a temporary exception, make the exception explicit, logged, and revocable.
Fail closed
If approval validation, policy lookup, identity verification, or audit logging fails, deny the operation rather than allowing it by default. A missing policy response is not evidence that the action is safe.
| Control choice | Lower-risk pattern | Higher-risk pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Permission scope | Read-only, resource-specific, short-lived access | Broad administrator token shared across tools |
| Tool separation | Separate search, preview, and commit operations | One tool that discovers and changes arbitrary resources |
| Authorization location | Independent gateway or downstream service enforcement | Prompt rules or model classification alone |
| Credential handling | Per-tool identity with rapid revocation | Long-lived production credentials in the agent runtime |
Which AI-agent actions require human approval?
Require explicit, action-specific approval when an operation is destructive, financially consequential, administrative, externally visible, security-relevant, or difficult to reverse. Routine, low-impact, readily reversible work can usually run under narrower automatic controls.
Bind approval to the exact action
An approval should identify the tool, target, parameters, expected effect, and expiry. “Approved for this task” is too vague if the agent can change the target or parameters later. Revalidate the approval immediately before execution and invalidate it when the action changes.
Use reversibility as a decision test
Deleting a record, changing access controls, publishing content, sending an external message, moving money, or deploying code deserves a stronger gate than formatting a local draft. A reversible preview or dry run can be automatic; the commit step should require confirmation when the impact is high.
| Action class | Typical control | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Read or analyze approved data | Automatic, read-only authorization | Does not alter the source state |
| Create a draft or proposed change | Automatic with validation and logging | Separates preparation from execution |
| Modify a limited, reversible record | Scoped authorization; approval based on impact | Can be corrected, but still changes state |
| Delete, publish, transfer funds, change privileges, or send externally | Action-specific human approval and confirmation | High impact or hard to reverse |
Approval does not replace technical authorization. The downstream service must still enforce the approved scope and reject a request that differs from it.
How should I validate and isolate an agent’s tool execution?
Validate inputs before a tool runs, execute with low privileges in an isolated boundary, and limit where the tool can connect. These controls reduce the damage from both model mistakes and malicious instructions embedded in data.

Allowlist parameters and destinations
Define permitted operations, argument types, ranges, file paths, database tables, domains, and network destinations. Reject extra or ambiguous fields, canonicalize paths and URLs, and validate the final request—not merely the natural-language explanation supplied by the model.

Isolate the runtime
Run tools in a sandbox or dedicated worker separated from host files, unrelated processes, and production secrets. Mount only the directories and data needed for the task. Restrict outbound network access and prevent the agent from reaching metadata services, internal administration endpoints, or unapproved destinations.
Use safe, instrumented tools during testing
Provide dry-run tools that record intended mutations without applying them. Add correlation IDs, simulated failures, and test fixtures so operators can see how the agent behaves when a policy check, approval, or downstream service is unavailable.
Detect abnormal patterns
Monitor call volume, repeated failures, unusual destinations, rapid privilege changes, and attempts to access unrelated resources. A circuit breaker should stop or quarantine the run when thresholds are exceeded and alert an operator with the relevant evidence.
What logs should I preserve during an AI-agent incident?
Keep a structured, time-synchronized record that lets someone who was not present reconstruct the decision and execution chain. Preserve enough detail for investigation without turning logs into an uncontrolled copy of secrets or sensitive content.
- Run, session, user, agent, worker, and correlation identifiers.
- The original task, system and developer instructions, relevant user inputs, and policy version.
- Retrieved documents, web pages, and tool-returned content that influenced the proposed action, with hashes or immutable references where appropriate.
- Tool names, exact parameters after validation, authorization results, approval identity and expiry, and downstream request IDs.
- Outputs, errors, timestamps, retries, queue events, and the state returned by the downstream service.
- Operator actions, including pause, credential revocation, policy changes, rollback, and restart.
Redact or tokenize credentials, session tokens, payment data, and unnecessary personal information. Protect logs from alteration, restrict who can read them, and retain them according to your incident and privacy requirements. If logging itself fails, fail closed for high-impact actions rather than silently proceeding without an audit trail.
Can I undo what an AI agent did?
Sometimes, but only when the affected system supports a verified rollback or a carefully designed compensating action. An agent’s claim that it “undid” a change is not proof; inspect the authoritative downstream state.

Classify completed effects
Separate actions into four groups: not sent, sent but rejected, accepted and reversible, and accepted but irreversible or externally propagated. Check each downstream system, including queues, caches, notifications, and secondary workflows that the original action may have triggered.
Prefer tested rollback paths
Use version restores, transaction rollback, undelete, or an explicitly documented inverse operation where the service guarantees its behavior. Verify ordering and dependencies: restoring one record may not retract an email, revoke a copied file, or reverse a payment.
Use compensating actions when rollback is impossible
A compensating action may correct the business state—for example, issuing a reversal, restoring an access policy, or sending a correction—but it does not erase the original event. Record both events and notify affected owners when external communication or compliance obligations apply.
Do not improvise recovery in the same uncontrolled run
After containment, use a separate, least-privileged recovery workflow with explicit approvals and a human-readable change plan. Snapshot the current state before making further changes so recovery can be audited and, where possible, reversed again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can external content make an agent behave unexpectedly?
Yes. Retrieved pages, documents, emails, and tool output are untrusted input and can contain instructions that redirect the agent or try to expand its authority. Treat their content as data, not as a new policy or user authorization.
Keep context and authority separate
Label external content clearly, isolate it from system and developer instructions, and prevent it from changing the task, tools, recipients, or permission scopes. The agent should check every proposed action against the original authorized objective and current policy.

Validate tool output before reuse
Tool results can contain malformed data, hidden instructions, or values that cause unsafe follow-on calls. Parse against a strict schema, allowlist values, and route suspicious output to review instead of feeding it directly into another write-capable tool.
How can I compare containment controls?
Evaluate controls on permission scope, action impact, enforcement location, and recovery capability. A control that only stops generation is weaker than one that blocks tool traffic and provides an auditable recovery path.
| Control level | Permission scope | Action impact handled | Enforcement boundary | Recovery capability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt instruction | Broad unless the model follows the text | Not reliably differentiated | Model output | None |
| Model-side confirmation | Depends on generated decision | Can request confirmation, but may miss or misclassify actions | Model and interface | Usually halt only |
| Tool gateway policy | Per-tool, per-resource, read/write scopes | Can require action-specific approval | Independent execution component | Can block, quarantine, and log |
| Downstream authorization plus circuit breaker | Service-enforced least privilege | Can stop anomalous volume and destinations | Tool host and destination service | Supports verified rollback or compensating workflows when designed |
Use layered controls rather than selecting one row. The model can help interpret intent, but authorization, validation, interruption, and recovery must remain enforceable when the model is wrong.

How do I resume an agent safely after containment?
Restart only after the incident record and downstream impact review are complete. A controlled restart is a new change, not a continuation of the old run.
- Document the triggering behavior, affected tools, completed effects, and suspected cause.
- Remove unnecessary tools and restore only the minimum read-only permissions first.
- Add or tighten allowlists, approval gates, rate limits, destination restrictions, and circuit-breaker thresholds.
- Test with benign fixtures, malformed inputs, prompt-injection content, denied approvals, expired credentials, and unavailable policy or logging services.
- Run in a staging or shadow mode that records proposed calls without applying them.
- Release gradually with an operator watching alerts, tool traces, and downstream state.
- Keep the emergency stop and credential-revocation procedures accessible to the on-call operator.
If the agent cannot operate within the reduced boundary, keep it disabled and redesign the workflow instead of widening permissions to make the original plan work.
Containment checklist for operators
- Have new side effects stopped at the tool, host, or downstream-service boundary?
- Were in-flight requests and asynchronous jobs checked rather than assumed cancelled?
- Were unnecessary credentials revoked and write scopes removed?
- Is there an immutable, privacy-protected record of inputs, context, calls, approvals, outputs, and interventions?
- Has every downstream system been checked for completed changes and triggered follow-on work?
- Is the proposed rollback or compensating action documented and tested?
- Are external documents and tool outputs treated as untrusted data?
- Will authorization, approval validation, and logging fail closed?
- Has the resumed agent been tested with safe tools and adversarial inputs?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does closing the chat window stop an AI agent?
Not necessarily. A chat interface may disconnect the user while a worker, queued job, or downstream request continues. Stop the execution path and verify the service state with request or job identifiers.
Should I delete the agent after an incident?
Deletion can destroy useful logs and does not retract actions already sent elsewhere. Preserve evidence, revoke access, and disable execution first; retire or rebuild the agent after impact and control reviews.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What is the safest first permission to remove?
Remove write-capable and externally visible access first, especially credentials that can delete, transfer funds, change privileges, publish, or send messages. Keep only the read access needed to investigate, and revoke it too if the credential may be compromised.
How often should kill-switches be tested?
Test them as part of deployment and incident-response exercises, and after changes to the agent, tool host, credential model, or downstream APIs. Record whether they stop queued and in-flight work, revoke access promptly, and leave an auditable event.
