You can use YouTube Music on an Android-based Walkman only when that exact player supports Google Play and the app. Sony documents YouTube Music as preinstalled on models such as the NW-A306, NW-WM1AM2/NW-WM1ZM2 and NW-ZX706/NW-ZX707. Connect the player to Wi-Fi, open YouTube Music, sign in, and play normally. A YouTube Music Premium membership is required for most offline music downloads, while downloaded content must be refreshed by reconnecting the player to the internet at least once every 30 days. “Walkman-style” describes the form factor, not guaranteed app compatibility, so verify your model before buying or troubleshooting.
What do I need before installing YouTube Music?
Start by confirming that the player is an Android device with Wi-Fi, Google Play access and an account setup that permits app downloads. A dedicated player that only plays files from internal storage or a microSD card cannot install YouTube Music simply because it resembles a Walkman.
- Compatible Android software: The manufacturer must support the Google Play framework and current app installation on your model. Sony’s documentation confirms this for several named Walkman players, but not for every Android music player.
- Wi-Fi: You need a network for the initial sign-in, streaming and periodic license checks for offline content.
- Google Account: Sony says a Google Account is needed to use Google Play on the NW-A306.
- YouTube account: Sign in with the account that owns your YouTube Music membership or personal library.
- Available storage: Downloads consume internal or removable storage. The amount depends on the number and length of items and the selected download quality.
Do not assume that an app missing from one player’s store is merely hidden by a setting. It may indicate that the device, Android build or region is not supported. Check the player’s current manufacturer guide and the app’s supported-devices information before attempting workarounds.

Sony’s help guides specifically describe Google Play installation and list YouTube Music on the following Android Walkman families. The documentation is model-specific; it is not a compatibility guarantee for all Walkman products or third-party players.

For the NW-A306, Sony’s “Installing apps to enjoy online music services” help guide says users can access Google Play and install music apps, and it identifies YouTube Music as preinstalled. The corresponding guides for the NW-WM1AM2/NW-WM1ZM2 and NW-ZX706/NW-ZX707 explain installing services through Google Play.
How do I open YouTube Music on a compatible player?
On a documented Android Walkman, the fastest setup is to open the preinstalled app, sign in and test playback while connected to Wi-Fi.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Open the player’s Settings app, choose the network or Wi-Fi section, select your network and enter its password. Wait until the Wi-Fi indicator shows an active connection.
- Open the app list. Swipe up from the home screen or open the launcher, depending on the player’s Android interface.
- Find YouTube Music. On the NW-A306, Sony lists it as an app installed at purchase. Tap the YouTube Music icon.
- Sign in. Follow the on-screen Google sign-in prompts. Use the account whose playlists, subscriptions or Premium benefits you want to access.
- Play a short item. Search for a song or open a playlist and start playback. This confirms that the app can reach the service and that the account is accepted.
Menus can differ by Android version and Sony firmware. Use the labels shown on your player rather than expecting the same home-screen arrangement as a phone.

If the player supports Google Play but the app is not installed, install it from the Play Store. If Google Play itself is absent or the listing says the device is incompatible, treat that as a model-support issue rather than a missing shortcut.
- Open Google Play Store from the app list.
- Sign in with a Google Account if the store requests one.
- Search for YouTube Music.
- Select the official listing and review the developer and permissions before choosing Install.
- When installation finishes, tap Open, or launch the app from the player’s app list.
The official listing is available at Google Play. Sony’s NW-A306 guide explicitly says a Google Account is required for Google Play. If your model cannot display the listing, first install pending system updates and confirm date, time, region and Wi-Fi settings; then consult the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model. Avoid assuming that sideloading an APK will provide a supported or reliable experience, because the cited manufacturer guidance only establishes installation through Google Play on the named devices.
How do I sign in and use the app?
After installation, YouTube Music works much like it does on another Android mobile device, but the player’s controls, screen size and audio settings may differ.
Choose the right account
Sign in to the Google account that contains your playlists and subscriptions. If you use multiple accounts, check the profile avatar before downloading: offline items are associated with the account that downloaded them.
Understand membership-dependent features
The Google Play listing identifies ad-free listening, background play and music downloads as Premium features. The exact benefits shown in the app can vary by country and account, so use the membership screen in your own account rather than relying on a price or feature list from another region.
Check audio and storage settings
Before downloading a large library, open YouTube Music’s settings and review download quality and storage location options that your player exposes. Higher quality generally uses more space; the service does not publish a single fixed storage amount for every song because duration, encoding and quality all affect the result.

How do I download music for offline listening?
YouTube Music Premium members can download songs, albums, playlists and eligible podcast episodes to an Android mobile device. The basic process is:
- Connect the player to Wi-Fi and open YouTube Music.
- Open the song, album, playlist or podcast episode you want to save.
- Tap the Download button or the item’s three-dot menu and choose Download.
- Wait for the download indicator to finish before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Open the Library or Downloads area and play one item with Wi-Fi temporarily disabled to confirm offline access.
YouTube Music’s official instructions, “Download music & podcasts to listen offline,” state that Premium members can download songs, videos and podcasts. They also explain that members can select playlists, songs or albums and may use Smart Downloads to save music automatically based on listening history.
Use Smart Downloads carefully
Smart Downloads can automatically add music based on your listening history. It is convenient on a player with ample storage, but it can consume space without an individual download action. If storage is limited, review the Smart Downloads setting and remove items you no longer need.
Know the podcast exception
YouTube Music says podcasts can be downloaded regardless of membership, although some episodes or shows may not be available for audio-only download. If an episode lacks the expected download option, its availability may be restricted by the show, episode or region rather than by a fault in the Walkman.
Why must the player reconnect to the internet?
Downloaded YouTube Music content is not a permanent collection of unrestricted audio files. YouTube Music Help says members must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. Keep the player on Wi-Fi periodically and open YouTube Music so it can verify the account and refresh the offline entitlement.
If a download stops working after a long period without connectivity, reconnect first, sign in to the same account and allow the app to synchronize. Deleting and downloading everything again should be a later step, not the first response.

There is no universal song count because storage use changes with track length, video versus audio selection, download quality, podcast size and the player’s free capacity. YouTube Music’s help guidance explicitly ties download counts to free storage, content length and quality.
- Check free space in the player’s Android storage settings before starting a large download.
- Prefer audio downloads when you only need listening; video versions require more storage.
- Choose a lower quality when capacity matters more than maximum fidelity.
- Remove completed playlists or old podcasts from the Downloads area rather than deleting the app.
- Recheck storage after enabling Smart Downloads, which can add items automatically.
Storage figures printed for a player describe its capacity, not the amount available to YouTube Music after Android, system files and other apps have taken their share.
What should I do if playback or downloads fail?
Work through the failure that matches the symptom instead of changing several settings at once.

The app will not install
- Confirm that Google Play opens and that a Google Account is signed in.
- Check Wi-Fi and install any pending player software updates.
- Search the exact model in the manufacturer’s support documentation. A device without supported Google Play access may not be compatible.
- Check the official supported-devices page and the current Play Store listing for regional or device restrictions.
The app opens but will not sign in
- Verify that the player’s date and time are set automatically; an incorrect clock can interfere with secure sign-in.
- Test another network or move closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
- Confirm that you are using the intended Google account and that the account can sign in through a browser.
- Install available updates for Google Play services and YouTube Music when the player offers them.
Streaming works but downloads do not
- Check whether the account has the Premium benefit required for music downloads.
- Confirm that the player has enough free storage and that the download quality is not set higher than necessary.
- Try a single short song before selecting a large playlist.
- For podcasts, check whether that specific episode supports audio-only download.
Previously downloaded items are unavailable
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and open YouTube Music so the account can be checked.
- Make sure you are signed in to the account that created the downloads.
- Check whether the membership or regional availability changed.
- Only after those checks, remove one failed item and download it again.
Can I use YouTube Music on any Android music player?
No. Android branding alone does not establish compatibility. The player needs a supported Android implementation, Google Play access or another officially supported distribution path, Wi-Fi and enough resources for the app and its downloads.
Sony’s guides verify installation on the named Walkman families, but they do not provide a complete list of third-party players, current regional availability, supported Android versions for every model or a universal minimum specification. Before purchasing a player, ask the seller or manufacturer for confirmation of the exact model number and current Play Store support, and check whether the device can receive security and app updates.
How should I choose a player for YouTube Music?
Compare devices against the way you intend to listen rather than against the “Walkman-style” label.
| Decision point | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| App-store support | YouTube Music updates and installation depend on a supported store and Android framework. | Can this exact model open Google Play and install the current official app? |
| Wi-Fi hardware | Wi-Fi is needed for streaming, sign-in and periodic offline entitlement checks. | Can it connect reliably to the networks you use? |
| Storage capacity | Downloads compete with Android and other music files. | How much space remains after system storage, and can it be expanded? |
| Software support | App compatibility can change as services update. | Does the manufacturer document updates for this model? |
| Listening mode | Streaming requires connectivity; offline playback requires eligible downloads and periodic reconnection. | Do you need occasional streaming, a downloaded library, or only local files? |
A player intended only for local files may be excellent for a music collection but unsuitable for YouTube Music. Conversely, a compatible Android model may offer the service while requiring more storage management and account maintenance than a simple file-based player.
What is the safest setup sequence?
For a documented compatible model, use this order to minimize avoidable problems:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Update the player’s system software while connected to Wi-Fi.
- Sign in to Google Play with the intended Google Account.
- Open the preinstalled YouTube Music app or install it from the official Play Store listing.
- Sign in and test streaming with a short item.
- Review membership, download quality, storage and Smart Downloads settings.
- Download one song or playlist and test it with Wi-Fi off.
- Reconnect the player to the internet at least once every 30 days while you maintain offline downloads.
This sequence separates device compatibility, account access, streaming and offline licensing. If a later step fails, you know which part to troubleshoot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a YouTube Music free account on an Android Walkman?
You can sign in and use whatever free-account features YouTube Music offers in your region, but the app identifies music downloads, ad-free listening and background play as Premium benefits. Availability can differ by country and account, so check the benefits displayed after signing in.
Why does the YouTube Music app look different on my player than on my phone?
The interface is adapted to the player’s Android version, screen dimensions and firmware. Buttons may be in different menus even when the underlying account and playback functions are the same.
Can I move YouTube Music downloads to a computer or another player?
YouTube Music downloads are managed inside the app and tied to the signed-in account, rather than provided as ordinary audio files for copying. Use the app’s own download and removal controls on each supported device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I check before buying a used Android Walkman for streaming?
Verify the exact model number, that Google Play still opens, that the device can connect to Wi-Fi and that it has enough free storage after a factory reset. Also check whether the manufacturer still supplies software updates, because app compatibility is model- and software-dependent.
