The PlayStation Classic works natively with its USB controllers, but it does not act as a general Bluetooth-controller host. To use most newer wireless controllers—including PS4 and PS5 pads—you need a compatible adapter or converter. The documented options include 8BitDo’s USB Wireless Adapter for PS Classic Edition and Brook’s Wingman PS2; which one fits depends on your exact controller, desired features, and whether you want to use the adapter with other PlayStation hardware.

What controllers work with the PlayStation Classic?

The PlayStation Classic’s native controller setup is its supplied USB controllers. Sony’s launch materials specify that two controllers came in the package, and the console’s instruction manual documents two controller ports. A modern controller’s ability to connect wirelessly to a different console does not make it natively compatible with the Classic.

For a PS4, PS5, Switch, or Xbox controller, plan on using an adapter whose manufacturer explicitly lists that controller family. The adapter is the compatibility bridge: the controller connects to it, and the adapter connects to the PlayStation Classic. Do not treat a controller’s Bluetooth capability alone as proof that it will pair directly with the console.

Controller or connection route PlayStation Classic compatibility Important qualification
Official PlayStation Classic USB controller Native Matches the console’s stock USB controller arrangement.
DualShock 4 Supported through 8BitDo’s documented adapter route; also listed for Brook Wingman PS2 Requires an adapter, not direct Bluetooth pairing.
DualShock 3 Supported through 8BitDo’s adapter route 8BitDo’s instructions require pairing preparation on a PC before using it with the Classic.
DualSense (PS5 controller) Listed for Brook Wingman PS2 Check Brook’s tested compatibility list for the exact controller and firmware.
Switch Pro controller Listed for both 8BitDo and Brook routes Supported features and button behavior may depend on the adapter.
Xbox One Bluetooth controller Brook lists Xbox One support; do not assume support through the original 8BitDo Classic adapter 8BitDo says Xbox Bluetooth controllers on firmware released in September 2021 are no longer supported by that adapter.
Original PS1 or PS2 controller Not a native USB-port connection A converter may be needed; do not assume an original PlayStation controller plugs directly into the Classic.

These entries describe manufacturer-documented routes, not a guarantee for every controller with a similar name. A product family can include revisions, regional versions, or firmware variants, so verify the exact model before buying.

Can I use a PS4 controller on the PlayStation Classic?

Yes, a DualShock 4 can be used through a documented adapter route, but it does not pair directly with the PlayStation Classic as a native Bluetooth controller. The 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter for PS Classic Edition lists DualShock 4 support, and Brook lists PS4 controllers for Wingman PS2.

Using the 8BitDo adapter

8BitDo’s adapter is the more directly targeted option if your main goal is to use a supported wireless controller with the Classic. Its listed controllers include DualShock 4, DualShock 3, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, Wii U Pro, Wii Remote, and 8BitDo Bluetooth Classic controllers. The product is described for PlayStation Classic use, but its documented limits matter: one adapter connects one controller, and rumble is not provided on the Classic.

Use the controller-support information for the adapter’s PlayStation Classic edition rather than assuming that another 8BitDo adapter has the same compatibility. For a two-player setup using two wireless controllers, the documented one-controller-per-adapter arrangement means planning for two adapters and enough USB connectivity.

Using Brook Wingman PS2

Brook’s Wingman PS2 also lists PS4 support and is positioned for PS2, original PlayStation, and PlayStation Classic. Its broader listed controller families include PS5, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox Elite 2, Switch Pro, and wired Xbox 360 controllers. This makes it a candidate if you want a converter for more than the Classic, but Brook advises checking its tested compatibility list. The exact controller and firmware matter.

Does a PS5 DualSense work on the PlayStation Classic?

Brook lists PS5 controllers for Wingman PS2, making that the documented route in this material. The DualSense is not natively supported by the PlayStation Classic, and a Bluetooth connection by itself is not enough; check Brook’s compatibility list for your exact controller model and firmware before purchase.

This is a useful example of why controller compatibility is platform-specific. Sony’s PS5 safety documentation says controllers intended for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3—including DUALSHOCK, DUALSHOCK 2, and DUALSHOCK 3—are not compatible with PS5. That statement concerns using older controllers on PS5, not using a PS5 controller on the Classic. The direction of compatibility matters: a controller working on one platform does not imply that it works on another.

Which adapter should I choose?

Choose based on the controller you own, the hardware you want to use it with, and the features you expect. The published lists are not interchangeable, and neither manufacturer’s family-level list should be read as a promise for every model or firmware revision.

Choose 8BitDo when the listed controller fits

The 8BitDo option is a clear fit to investigate for a DualShock 4, DualShock 3, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, Wii U Pro, Wii Remote, or supported 8BitDo Bluetooth Classic controller. If you need two wireless controllers, account for one adapter per controller. If you use a DualShock 3, follow 8BitDo’s pairing-preparation instructions rather than expecting it to work immediately out of the box.

Do not choose this adapter on the assumption that every Xbox Bluetooth controller will work. 8BitDo identifies a specific exclusion: Xbox Bluetooth controllers on firmware released in September 2021 are no longer supported by the original adapter. The date refers to the firmware release qualification in 8BitDo’s support information, not a general rule that every Xbox controller from that year is incompatible.

Choose Brook when its wider platform scope matters

Wingman PS2 is the more relevant candidate if you want one converter aimed at the PlayStation Classic alongside original PlayStation and PS2 hardware, or if the controller you want is a PS5 controller. Brook publishes a tested compatibility list and recommends checking the exact controller and firmware when a controller does not respond. A broad “PS5” or “Xbox One” entry is a starting point, not a substitute for confirming your specific model.

How do I use a wireless controller with the PlayStation Classic?

Use the adapter’s instructions for the specific controller and adapter version. The general arrangement is to connect the adapter to a Classic USB controller port and pair or connect the controller to the adapter; the Classic itself is not the Bluetooth pairing target for these documented routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the controller precisely. Note whether it is a DualShock 4, DualShock 3, DualSense, Switch Pro, or a specific Xbox model. If you are unsure, check the controller’s model information rather than relying only on its appearance or brand.
  2. Check the adapter’s supported list. Compare the exact controller and, where listed, its firmware against the manufacturer’s compatibility information. For Brook, use the tested-controller list. For 8BitDo, check the instructions for the PS Classic edition.
  3. Check preparation requirements. The 8BitDo instructions require PC pairing preparation for DualShock 3. Do not skip a manufacturer-required preparation step or assume that pairing procedures are identical across controller families.
  4. Connect the adapter to a controller port. The Classic has two controller ports. Follow the adapter manual for any pairing, button, or status-indicator procedure; the cited compatibility information does not establish one universal sequence for every supported controller.
  5. Pair the controller with the adapter. Follow the adapter and controller instructions for the particular model. Pairing to the adapter is different from trying to pair the controller directly to the console.
  6. Check the intended features and player count. With 8BitDo, allow one adapter for each controller and do not expect rumble on the PlayStation Classic. For any other feature or multi-controller arrangement, rely on the adapter maker’s specific documentation.

Why might a controller fail to connect?

A failed connection does not necessarily mean the PlayStation Classic is defective. The most useful first checks are whether the controller is on the supported list, whether its firmware meets the adapter’s compatibility conditions, and whether required pairing preparation was completed.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • The controller is being paired directly to the Classic. The documented modern-controller routes use an adapter. Connect and pair the controller through the adapter instead of treating the Classic as a Bluetooth host.
  • The exact controller revision is not listed. Similar product names do not establish identical compatibility. Confirm the exact model against the manufacturer’s list before concluding that the whole controller family is supported.
  • The firmware is outside the documented support. Brook recommends checking firmware when a listed controller does not respond. For the 8BitDo adapter, the specified Xbox Bluetooth firmware exclusion is particularly important.
  • A required setup step was skipped. 8BitDo’s instructions call for PC pairing preparation for DualShock 3. Consult the adapter’s instructions for the right procedure rather than applying a setup method from another model.
  • You expect an unsupported feature. The documented 8BitDo route does not provide rumble on PlayStation Classic. A working button connection does not mean every feature available on another console will carry over.
  • You are trying to connect two wireless controllers with one 8BitDo adapter. 8BitDo specifies one controller per adapter. Plan for an adapter per wireless controller and sufficient USB connectivity.

If those checks do not resolve the issue, consult the adapter maker’s current compatibility and support instructions for the specific model. Avoid buying a replacement controller until you have ruled out an unsupported revision, firmware condition, or setup requirement.

Can an original PS1 or PS2 controller plug into the Classic?

Do not assume so. The PlayStation Classic’s stock arrangement uses USB controllers, while original PlayStation and PS2 controllers use legacy hardware connections rather than the Classic’s native USB controller ports. A converter may be needed, and Brook specifically positions Wingman PS2 for use with original PlayStation, PS2, and PlayStation Classic hardware.

This is different from saying that every original controller works through that converter. The available compatibility information establishes adapter-based use and directs buyers to Brook’s tested list; it does not establish universal support for every vintage controller or revision. Check the specific pad and the converter’s current instructions before purchase.

What should I check before buying?

Confirm the connection path and the exact compatibility details before paying for an adapter. The key decision is not simply wireless versus wired: it is whether the controller model, adapter, firmware, and console are documented together.

  • For DualShock 3 on the 8BitDo route, check the required PC pairing preparation.
  • For rumble, remember that the documented 8BitDo Classic route does not provide it; the cited Brook information does not state whether it does.

Adapter support can change with firmware and product revisions. Treat manufacturer compatibility pages and instructions as the final check for a purchase, especially when the controller is a less common revision or the adapter will be shared among several consoles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a PlayStation Classic controller on a PS5?

The cited Sony PS5 safety information says controllers intended for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3—including DUALSHOCK, DUALSHOCK 2, and DUALSHOCK 3—are not compatible with PS5. It does not specifically establish support for the PlayStation Classic’s USB controller, so do not assume that it works on PS5.

Do licensed PS4 specialty controllers work on PS5?

Sony says certain licensed specialty controllers made for PS4 may work on PS5 when the game supports them. That limited PS5 rule is separate from using a PS4 controller with the PlayStation Classic.
