The quickest way to use an LLM hosted on an Android phone from a laptop or desktop is to run the phone app’s LAN server. Put both devices on the same private Wi‑Fi network, load a model, set the server password, and start the service. Open the address shown by the app with /ui appended for browser chat, or use the same host with /v1 as an OpenAI-compatible API base for scripts and compatible desktop clients.
For development, Termux can run llama.cpp without root, while USB debugging and Android SDK Platform-Tools are useful for installing APKs, copying large model files, and collecting logs. ADB alone does not create a browser or API service; an HTTP-serving app or runtime is still required.
What do I need before connecting to an Android LLM?
You need an Android phone capable of running the selected model, a computer on the same trusted private network, and an Android runtime that can either serve the model over HTTP or run it locally for development. A quantized model that fits the phone’s available memory is essential; an oversized model or context window can terminate the process even when the application itself installed correctly.

Basic checklist
- An Android phone with enough free RAM and storage for the runtime and model.
- A laptop or desktop connected to the same private Wi‑Fi network as the phone for LAN access.
- An Android local-LLM app with a LAN-server option, or a Termux/llama.cpp installation for a developer workflow.
- The server password required by the app. Pocket LLM’s documentation specifies a web-UI password of at least eight characters.
- For USB work, Android Developer Options, USB debugging, Android SDK Platform-Tools, and a USB-C data cable (a charge-only cable cannot carry ADB data).
Keep the phone and computer on a network you control. Do not treat a phone’s LAN address as a public service address; later sections explain how to handle access beyond the home network safely.

How do I connect through an Android app’s LAN server?
A LAN-server app is the shortest path because it supplies both a browser interface and, in apps that implement it, an OpenAI-compatible API. The exact menu names vary, but the sequence documented for Pocket LLM is representative: load a model, open the LAN-server control, set a password, start the service, and use the displayed address from the computer.
1. Put both devices on the same private network
- Connect the phone and computer to the same home or office Wi‑Fi network. Avoid guest Wi‑Fi when it isolates wireless clients from one another.
- Turn off any setting that deliberately separates wireless devices, such as client isolation, if you administer the network and need peer-to-peer access.
- Note that mobile data on the phone does not place it on the same LAN as a computer connected to Wi‑Fi. A phone hotspot can work only when the hotspot permits clients to communicate with each other.
2. Load a model on the phone
Open the Android LLM app, import or select a model, and wait for it to finish loading before starting the server. Model loading can fail independently of networking when the file is too large or the phone cannot allocate enough memory. Close other memory-heavy apps and select a smaller or more aggressively quantized model when the runtime reports an allocation error.
3. Configure and start the LAN server
- Open the app’s LAN-server, network-server, or similar control.
- Create and save a strong web-UI password. Pocket LLM documents a minimum of eight characters; using a longer, unique password is safer.
- Start the server and leave the app running. Android battery management can stop a background process, so check the app’s battery setting if the service disappears after the screen is locked.
- Copy the exact phone URL, including its IP address and port, shown by the app. Do not substitute the phone’s public IP, a guessed port, or an address from an earlier session.
4. Open browser chat from the computer
On the computer, open the displayed address with /ui. For example, if the app displays http://192.168.1.42:8080, the browser address is http://192.168.1.42:8080/ui. Use the password configured on the phone when prompted. If the app already includes a path in its displayed URL, preserve that path and add /ui only as the documentation specifies.

Use the same host and port as an OpenAI-compatible base URL, with /v1 appended. In the example above, the base is http://192.168.1.42:8080/v1. A quick reachability check from a computer with curl is:
curl http://192.168.1.42:8080/v1/modelsReplace the example address with the exact one shown by your app. Client-specific authentication differs: some clients ask for an API key even when the phone server uses a web-UI password, while others let you leave the key blank. Use the server’s own instructions rather than assuming the browser password is an API key.
When the endpoint responds, enter that /v1 base URL in the desktop tool’s custom OpenAI-compatible provider field. Select the model identifier returned by the server if the client asks for one; the identifier may not match the filename.

How can I run llama.cpp on the phone with Termux?
Termux is the developer-oriented route. The official llama.cpp Android documentation describes running it without root: update Termux packages, install Git and CMake (plus Android support components where required), build the project, place a GGUF model in the Termux home directory, and run llama-cli. This gives you control over the runtime, but a command-line process is not automatically a browser or network API.
Install the build environment
- Install Termux from a source that provides a current build, then open it and allow the requested storage access.
- Update the package index and installed packages:
pkg update && pkg upgrade- Install the core build tools:
pkg install git cmakeThe exact Android support package depends on the Termux distribution and the llama.cpp revision. Follow the Android instructions for the revision you are building instead of copying a package name from an unrelated release.
Build and place the model
- Clone the llama.cpp source repository in Termux and run the CMake configuration and build commands specified by its Android instructions.
- Copy a GGUF model into the Termux home directory, where the process has straightforward file access and the documentation recommends keeping model files for performance and reliability.
- Start
llama-cliwith the model path and a conservative context size. Increase the context only after a small prompt completes reliably.
A large context allocation can create a sudden memory spike and terminate the Termux session. The model’s quantization, number of layers, context length, and other runtime settings all affect memory use; there is no single safe context value for every phone.
Make a CLI runtime available to the computer
llama-cli is interactive on the phone. To use it from a computer, add a serving layer that listens on the phone’s LAN interface, or use an Android application that wraps the inference engine and provides HTTP endpoints. Bind only to the interface and port you intend to use, protect the service with authentication when available, and then connect from the computer as described for a LAN server.
If you only need terminal access for administration, you can keep the process on the phone and use ADB or a secure shell-style workflow. That is different from exposing a chat page or OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Can I use USB and ADB instead of Wi‑Fi?
Yes, USB/ADB is excellent for installing an APK, moving a multi-gigabyte model, and collecting logs. It is not, by itself, a model-serving protocol. You still need an Android app or HTTP server listening on the phone if the computer is meant to send chat requests.

Prepare Android and the computer
- On the phone, enable Developer Options by opening the Android build-information area and tapping the build number as required by your Android version. In Developer Options, enable USB debugging.
- Install Android SDK Platform-Tools on the computer.
- Use a USB-C data cable. A cable that charges the phone but has no data conductors will not work for ADB.
- Connect the phone, unlock it, and accept the USB-debugging authorization prompt. If the prompt does not appear, disconnect and reconnect after checking that USB debugging is enabled.
Verify ADB and transfer files
From the computer, run:
adb devicesThe phone should appear with an authorized status. Use the APK installation and model-transfer commands documented by the Android runtime you selected. ADB can push a large model to an app-accessible directory and pull log files back for diagnosis, but storage permissions and destination paths differ between apps and Android releases.
When USB is preferable
- First installation: USB avoids relying on a LAN connection while installing and configuring a custom build.
- Large transfers: A wired connection is often more predictable than copying a large model over congested Wi‑Fi.
- Debugging: Log collection and repeated deployment are easier when the development computer is attached directly.
- Offline setup: You can prepare the phone without placing a server on the network, then enable LAN access only when needed.
After the model is installed, disconnecting USB does not automatically make it reachable from a browser. Start the app’s LAN server or a separate HTTP service and use its displayed network address.
Which connection method should I choose?
The right method depends on whether you value immediate browser access, programmable integration, or control over the runtime. The following comparison reflects the documented trade-offs rather than a speed benchmark.

For most readers who simply want to type on a computer, choose the LAN-server app. Choose Termux or a custom MLC/llama.cpp build when you need model-format control, custom runtime settings, or an application you can package and maintain yourself.
How do model size, quantization, and context affect reliability?
Phone-hosted inference is constrained by memory before it is constrained by network bandwidth. Select a quantized model that fits available RAM and leave headroom for Android and the serving process. A model that technically loads may still fail when a longer prompt increases the context allocation.
RAM and context planning
- Start with a smaller quantized model and a short context. Confirm that one request completes before increasing either.
- Watch for an abrupt app exit, a killed Termux session, or an out-of-memory message when you raise context length; these indicate memory pressure rather than a Wi‑Fi problem.
- Close games, browsers with many tabs, and other memory-intensive apps before loading the model.
- Keep model files in an app-accessible location. For Termux and llama.cpp, the Termux home directory is the documented practical location.
MLC-specific controls
MLC LLM’s Android packaging model includes a model path, model ID, estimated VRAM, optional bundled weights, and context/prefill overrides. Those fields let a developer describe the target device and adjust memory-sensitive behavior, but they do not remove the need to test on a physical phone.

Why there is no universal speed number
Performance varies with the phone’s system-on-chip, thermal state, model quantization, context length, and inference runtime. No authoritative cross-device tokens-per-second figure applies to every Android phone, so treat any speed estimate as device- and configuration-specific rather than a promise.

Work from the physical connection toward the application. The displayed address, network membership, server state, and Android background behavior are the usual causes.
The browser says the site cannot be reached
- Confirm the phone and computer are currently on the same private Wi‑Fi network, not merely networks with similar names.
- Read the IP address and port again from the running app. Phone addresses can change after reconnecting to Wi‑Fi.
- Enter the exact address shown, including the port, and add the documented
/uipath. - Check that the LAN server is still running and that the model remains loaded.
- Temporarily keep the app in the foreground and disable battery restrictions for it. Android may stop a background server to save power.
- If other devices on the network are also unreachable, check the router’s guest-network or client-isolation setting.
The page opens but chat requests fail
- Reload the page after confirming the model finished loading.
- Check the server log or status panel for an out-of-memory error.
- Reduce context length or switch to a smaller quantized model.
- For API clients, use the
/v1base URL rather than the browser’s/uiURL. - Use the model identifier reported by the server when a client requests one; a filename is not always the identifier.
adb devices shows no phone
- Unlock the phone and look for the USB-debugging authorization dialog.
- Replace the cable with a known data-capable USB-C cable and try another USB port.
- Confirm Android USB debugging is enabled and reinstall or update Platform-Tools if the installation is incomplete.
- On systems that require it, grant the computer’s USB permissions and restart the ADB service.
- Run
adb devicesagain. An unauthorized entry means the phone is detected but the authorization prompt has not been accepted.
The server stops when the screen is locked
Android’s battery and background policies differ by manufacturer. Set the LLM app to an unrestricted or equivalent battery mode where available, keep the phone charging for long generations, and verify that the app is excluded from automatic sleeping or task cleanup. If the manufacturer provides a per-app “lock” or “allow background activity” control, enable it for the server app.

Keep the service private by default. A LAN address is not an authentication boundary, and an unauthenticated server can expose prompts and generated text to anyone who can reach the port.
- Use the app’s documented password; Pocket LLM requires at least eight characters for its web UI.
- Bind or firewall the service to the trusted LAN where the runtime supports that option.
- Stop the server when you are finished, especially before joining a hotel, conference, or other shared network.
- Do not forward the server port from your router to the public internet.
- For access from outside the home, use a private tunnel or VPN with its own authentication and encryption rather than publishing the phone port directly.
- Avoid placing sensitive prompts into a server whose access controls you have not tested from another device.
USB debugging also deserves care: leave it disabled when you are not developing, and remove previously authorized computers in Android’s Developer Options if a trusted computer is lost or replaced.
What should I know about Android inference frameworks?
llama.cpp, MLC LLM, and Google’s Android inference components solve related problems at different layers. llama.cpp offers a portable inference engine and a Termux path; its Android Studio binding parses GGUF metadata, loads the model, and streams generated tokens. MLC LLM supplies an Android SDK and packaging flow with device-oriented memory and context controls.

Google’s MediaPipe LLM Inference API supports fully on-device Android inference, but its documentation labels that API maintenance-only and recommends LiteRT-LM for new Android work. That status matters if you are starting a new application: an existing MediaPipe integration may continue to function, while a new project should evaluate the recommended successor and its current documentation.
For a personal laptop-to-phone connection, these framework distinctions are usually hidden behind the app’s LAN server. They become important when you are building the Android application yourself, need a particular accelerator, or must control model packaging and updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect from a computer that is not on the same Wi‑Fi network?
Not by using the phone’s ordinary private LAN address alone. Use a properly authenticated private tunnel or VPN to create a secure path, and do not expose the model server directly through router port forwarding.

It may, but Android manufacturers apply different background and battery policies. Set the app to an unrestricted battery mode where available, keep it exempt from task-killing tools, and test a long request while the screen is locked before relying on unattended use.
Can I use an API key from another AI service with the phone server?
No assumption is safe. A phone server’s web password and an API client’s key field are separate controls; follow the server’s authentication instructions and use the model ID returned by its API.
Why does a model work on the phone but fail when I use a long prompt from the computer?
The longer request consumes additional context memory, which can push the phone beyond its available RAM even though the model loaded successfully. Reduce the context setting or choose a smaller quantized model, then retry with a short prompt before increasing limits.
