The safest way to connect Spotify to an AI assistant is to use Spotify’s approved integration for that assistant, or—if you are building your own app—Spotify OAuth 2.0 with only the scopes your feature needs. ChatGPT and Claude offer opt-in Spotify connections, Alexa links Spotify through the Alexa app, and a custom integration can separate playback control from access to playlists, saved music, listening history, or profile data. You can disconnect official integrations, disable Alexa’s skill, or revoke a custom app’s authorization when you no longer want access.
How do I connect Spotify to ChatGPT?
Start a ChatGPT conversation, mention Spotify, and follow the prompt to connect your Spotify account. After authorization, you can ask for songs, artists, albums, playlists, or podcast episodes; Spotify says relevant conversation context can be used to tailor the request.
Connect the account
- Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation.
- Say that you want to use Spotify—for example, ask for a playlist or a podcast recommendation.
- When ChatGPT presents the Spotify connection prompt, choose the option to connect and complete Spotify’s authorization screen.
- Return to the conversation and make a specific request, such as a genre, mood, artist, album, playlist, or podcast episode.
The connection is opt-in. Spotify’s October 6, 2025 newsroom announcement says you remain in control and can connect or disconnect at any time. The integration initially launched in English across 145 countries; language and market availability can change, so the current connection prompt is the practical test for your account.

Can Claude control my Spotify devices?
Yes, where the Spotify integration is available. Spotify announced the Claude integration on April 23, 2026, describing personalized music and podcast recommendations plus Spotify Connect controls that let you see where playback is occurring and switch or control devices from the conversation.
Connect Spotify in Claude
- Open Claude and begin a conversation about music or podcasts.
- Ask Claude to use Spotify or request a Spotify recommendation.
- Follow the displayed Spotify sign-in and authorization flow.
- After the connection completes, ask for recommendations or request a device action supported by Spotify Connect.
Spotify says you decide whether Spotify stays connected and can disconnect whenever you like. Device control depends on the Spotify Connect devices currently visible to your account; a device that is offline, signed out, or unavailable on the network cannot be selected from the conversation.
Recommendations versus device control
These are separate capabilities in practice. A recommendation request uses your conversation and the Spotify connection to find music or podcasts, while a Spotify Connect request acts on an active playback device. Seeing or switching devices does not, by itself, imply permission to read every playlist or your complete listening history.

Link Spotify from the Alexa mobile app, not from the Spotify app. Spotify’s documented path is More → Settings → Alexa Preferences → Music & Podcasts → Link New Service → Spotify; then follow the on-screen authorization steps.
Link the service
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Under Alexa Preferences, select Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Link New Service.
- Choose Spotify and complete the sign-in and permission screens.
Make Spotify the default and use supported hardware
After linking, open the same music settings and choose Spotify under Your Default Services if you want Alexa to use Spotify without naming the service in every music command. Spotify lists Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Echo Show, Echo Tap, Fire TV Cube, Facebook Portal devices, and Sonos players among supported devices on its cited support page. Availability can depend on the device model, country, and account configuration.
Podcast commands may still require you to say “on Spotify,” even when Spotify is linked. For example, adding “play [podcast] on Spotify” tells Alexa which service should handle the request.

Unlink Spotify from Alexa
- Return to the Alexa app’s linked music services list.
- Select Spotify.
- Tap Disable Skill and confirm.
Disabling the skill stops Alexa from using that linked service. If you also authorized another custom Spotify app, that authorization must be revoked separately through that app’s account controls.

For a custom integration, the answer is determined by OAuth scopes. Spotify issues an access token containing the permissions requested and approved during authorization. Playback control, playback status, playlists, saved items, listening history, and profile details are separate permissions; granting one does not automatically grant the others.
Spotify scopes and what each one permits
| Scope | Access it grants | Typical feature |
|---|---|---|
user-read-playback-state |
Current playback state and Spotify Connect device information | Show what is playing and list available devices |
user-modify-playback-state |
Pause, resume, skip, seek, set volume, change repeat or shuffle, transfer playback, and queue an item | Playback buttons or conversational commands |
user-read-currently-playing |
Currently playing item and queue information | Display the current track or episode |
playlist-read-private |
Private playlist data | Search or summarize a user’s private playlists |
playlist-read-collaborative |
Collaborative playlist data | Read playlists the user can edit collaboratively |
user-library-read |
Saved albums, tracks, episodes, and other saved content | Recommend from a saved library |
user-top-read |
Top-listening signals | Use longer-term listening preferences |
user-read-recently-played |
Recently played items | Use recent listening as a recommendation signal |
user-read-email |
Account email address | Identify an account when an app explicitly needs the email |
user-read-private |
Private profile and subscription details | Show account or plan information |
Can playback control be granted without playlists or history?
Yes. Request user-modify-playback-state for actions such as pause, skip, seek, volume, queue, or device transfer, and add user-read-playback-state only if the feature must inspect the current device or playback state. Do not request playlist, library, top-listening, or recently-played scopes unless the feature genuinely needs them.
Conversely, a recommendation feature that only searches Spotify’s catalog may not need any personal-library or history scope. Design the permission request around the smallest set of actions, explain each one in your own UI, and avoid bundling broad access “for later.”
How does a custom Spotify assistant use OAuth securely?
A custom assistant should send the user through Spotify’s OAuth 2.0 authorization flow. The user approves named scopes, Spotify returns an authorization code, and the app exchanges it for an access token. The token’s permissions are limited to the scopes approved by the user.

Choose the right authorization flow
- Authorization code with PKCE: Use this for mobile apps, desktop apps, browser-based apps, and other public clients where a client secret cannot be kept confidential. PKCE binds the authorization request to the subsequent token exchange.
- Regular authorization code: Use this for a server application that can protect its client secret. Keep the secret on the server rather than shipping it in an app or browser bundle.
Implement the flow
- Register the application and define an allowlisted redirect URI.
- Construct the authorization request with only the required scopes. Spotify’s authorization dialog displays the scopes being requested, so users can review them before approval.
- Send the user to Spotify’s authorization page. Your app should not collect or proxy the Spotify password.
- Receive the returned authorization code at the registered redirect URI.
- Exchange the code for an access token, supplying the PKCE verifier when using PKCE or the protected client secret for a confidential server.
- Call only the Web API endpoints required by the feature, handling expired access tokens according to Spotify’s token rules.
- Store tokens securely, limit staff and service access to them, and provide a clear way for the user to remove the connection.
The redirect URI must exactly match an allowlisted URI. Differences in scheme, host, path, port, or trailing characters can cause authorization to fail. Test the production redirect separately from local development and register each permitted URI explicitly.

What the assistant should say before requesting access
Explain the feature in plain language: “This lets the assistant pause and skip playback,” for example, rather than presenting an unexplained list of scope names. If a later feature needs playlists or listening history, ask for those additional scopes at that time instead of silently expanding the original request.
Can I build a voice assistant that controls Spotify?
Do not assume that Spotify’s public API authorizes a new voice-control assistant. Spotify’s developer policy states: “Do not create a voice-enabled SDA that enables a user to control Spotify with their voice, or any kind of voice assistant that provides voice-control functionality.”
This policy boundary matters even when the OAuth implementation is technically correct. A custom project that accepts spoken commands and then controls Spotify may fall within the prohibited category. Use approved integrations such as the supported Alexa connection, and review Spotify’s current developer policy before building, distributing, or publishing any assistant.
How do I disconnect ChatGPT, Claude, Alexa, or a custom app?
Disconnect at the same layer where you connected the account. Official integrations expose their own controls; a custom OAuth app needs its own revocation and data-deletion path.
ChatGPT
Open the connected-account control presented by ChatGPT and choose the option to disconnect Spotify. Spotify’s October 6, 2025 announcement says users can connect or disconnect at any time; the label and location may change as ChatGPT’s settings evolve.
Claude
Use Claude’s connected-account control to remove Spotify. Spotify’s April 23, 2026 announcement likewise says you can disconnect whenever you like.

Why is the connection failing or behaving differently?
The Spotify option does not appear
Official integrations can be limited by country, language, account tier, rollout stage, or product version. Update the assistant and Spotify apps, sign in to the intended Spotify account, and check again later. The absence of a connection option does not mean your account credentials are wrong.
Authorization returns a redirect or callback error
For a custom app, compare the redirect URI character for character with the URI registered in the Spotify developer settings. Check the scheme, hostname, port, path, and trailing slash. A URI that works locally will fail in production if the production address was not allowlisted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The integration may not include Spotify Connect controls, or the custom app may have requested catalog or recommendation access without user-modify-playback-state. For a custom app, add the playback-control scope only after confirming that the feature requires it and that the user approves the new permission.

A device is missing
For Connect-based control, the device must be online, signed in to the same Spotify account, and visible to Spotify at that moment. Restarting the player or opening Spotify on the device can make it visible again; a device that the account cannot currently see cannot be transferred to from an assistant.
Alexa plays from the wrong service
Set Spotify under Your Default Services in Alexa’s music settings, or include “on Spotify” in the command. Podcast requests may still need the service name even after Spotify is linked.
What should I check before granting access?
- Confirm that the connection prompt is on the official assistant or Spotify authorization domain and that you are signing in to the intended Spotify account.
- Read every requested permission. A playback-only feature should not ask for private playlists, saved-library data, listening history, email, or subscription details.
- For a custom app, verify that it uses PKCE when it cannot protect a client secret and that redirect URIs are exact and allowlisted.
- Find the disconnect or revoke control before approving access, and check how the app deletes stored tokens.
- Review Spotify’s current developer policy before publishing any assistant, especially one that accepts voice commands.
What is the practical takeaway?
Use ChatGPT or Claude’s official Spotify connection for conversational recommendations, Alexa’s documented app flow for supported speakers, and OAuth 2.0 for a custom application. The decisive privacy control in a custom build is scope selection: playback permissions do not inherently expose playlists or listening history. Keep permissions narrow, use PKCE where a secret cannot be protected, and disconnect or revoke access whenever the assistant no longer needs it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Spotify share my password with an AI assistant?
The OAuth authorization flow is designed for the assistant to receive an authorization result and token rather than your Spotify password. If an app asks you to type your Spotify password into the assistant’s own form instead of Spotify’s authorization screen, stop and verify the integration.
Are Spotify’s ChatGPT and Claude connections available in every country?
No availability guarantee is permanent. The ChatGPT launch began in English across 145 countries, while Spotify’s later market and language support can change; the connection option shown for your signed-in account is the current indicator.
Why does a podcast command need the words “on Spotify” in Alexa?
Alexa can route music through a default service, but Spotify notes that podcast commands may still need an explicit service name. Adding “on Spotify” removes ambiguity when Alexa is choosing between linked providers.
Can I add playlist access later to a custom assistant?
Yes, design the app to request an additional authorization when a new feature needs private or collaborative playlists. Do not silently reuse a broad token or assume that an earlier playback permission covers playlist data.
What happens to an assistant’s stored tokens after I disconnect?
A well-designed app should revoke the authorization and delete stored access and refresh tokens according to its privacy policy. Disconnecting an official integration does not automatically remove authorization granted to a separate custom application.
