You can connect Nanoleaf lights to ChatGPT or Claude using Nanoleaf’s official Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration. Pair your lights in Nanoleaf Desktop first, add Nanoleaf’s published MCP endpoint in the assistant’s connector settings, then review the access and action prompts before approving anything. The computer and Nanoleaf Desktop app must stay running for the connection to remain available.
Before you connect: check these requirements
- Pair your lights in Nanoleaf Desktop. Nanoleaf’s setup instructions require desktop app version 3.0.0 or later. Keep the app and its computer running while you use the MCP connection. If the assistant reports that a firmware update is needed, update the device before continuing. See Nanoleaf’s MCP setup guide.
- Confirm your product supports the action you want. Nanoleaf says compatibility and capabilities depend on product, firmware and AI platform. Shapes is among its listed compatible products; its setup guide uses Shapes Hexagons for RGB color and Elements for warm-to-cool white, which cannot produce blue. Check your own model and firmware rather than assuming every light supports every color or command. The compatible-device list is at Nanoleaf’s MCP page.
- Check account and workspace eligibility. Connector availability and controls can vary by plan, region, account role, model, interface and workspace policy. Claude’s remote custom connectors are documented for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise; organization owners control whether Team and Enterprise users can use them. ChatGPT app availability and permission controls also vary. Review the current requirements in OpenAI’s connector guide and Anthropic’s remote MCP connector guide.
Connect Nanoleaf to ChatGPT
Use the Nanoleaf-published endpoint, https://integrations.nanoleaf.me/mcp. ChatGPT’s labels and menus may change, so use its current connector or app settings rather than relying on an old menu path.
- Open ChatGPT settings and find the section for Connectors, Apps or Plugins, as labeled in your current interface.
- Choose the option to add a connector or app and enter Nanoleaf’s endpoint: https://integrations.nanoleaf.me/mcp.
- Continue to Nanoleaf, sign in to your Nanoleaf account, and review the requested access before approving it.
- When ChatGPT offers permission or action controls, select the narrowest option that suits your use. Keep confirmation enabled for actions you want to review before they happen.
- Try a low-impact request, such as asking for device status or adjusting a light’s brightness, and read any action prompt before confirming.
OpenAI documents controls that may include asking before actions, allowing read actions or allowing low-risk actions. The available settings depend on the app and account or workspace configuration; a permission setting does not give the connector access beyond what the app itself has been granted. See OpenAI’s connector documentation.
Connect Nanoleaf to Claude
Anthropic’s documented path for remote custom MCP connectors is Claude’s Settings > Connectors. Check the current Nanoleaf setup instructions for its endpoint and follow the labels shown in your Claude account.

- Test with a simple request and inspect the tool and action details before accepting changes.
Anthropic lists remote custom connectors for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Team and Enterprise availability is subject to organization-owner controls. Check Anthropic’s connector guide for the current account requirements and controls.
What you can control—and what may vary
Nanoleaf lists operations such as switching devices on or off, adjusting brightness and color or color temperature, creating and managing scenes, playing scenes and playlists, checking device status, and using some 4D, Screen Mirror, Sync+ and Circadian Lighting features. The available operations depend on the specific device, firmware and AI platform; the list is not a promise that every Nanoleaf product supports every operation. Nanoleaf’s feature page describes MCP as “an open standard that lets an AI assistant communicate with other apps and services.” See its MCP feature and compatibility information.

For example, Nanoleaf gives “Create a cozy Scene for movie night in the living room” as a sample prompt. Treat the assistant’s interpretation as a proposed action: check which devices or scene it intends to change, then approve only if that matches your request.
Use the integration more safely
Verify the endpoint and the request
Add only the endpoint Nanoleaf publishes: https://integrations.nanoleaf.me/mcp. Before authenticating or approving an action, check the connector identity, requested access, tool name and effect. Anthropic advises adding custom connectors only from trusted organizations listed on their own websites; it also warns that custom connectors may not be verified by Anthropic and can read or modify external data within the permissions granted. See Anthropic’s guidance.

Limit enabled tools and keep confirmations useful
Enable only what you need, and review the details of any action that changes a device or scene. Anthropic advises limiting enabled tools and monitoring their use, noting that a connector developer can change tool behavior. ChatGPT’s available approval choices depend on the app and workspace; choose the most restrictive usable option instead of treating convenience settings as a substitute for reviewing actions. Take extra care with Claude Research
Anthropic says connected tools can be invoked during its Research feature without another approval. If you use Research, disable connector tools that can write to external services before starting it. See Anthropic’s Research guidance.

Disconnect when you no longer need access
To revoke the connection, disconnect Nanoleaf in Claude’s connector settings or in the third-party service’s settings. In ChatGPT, disconnect the app; in a managed workspace, an administrator may need to disable it. Follow the current controls described by Anthropic and OpenAI.

Nanoleaf also documents a do-it-yourself local OpenAPI route. That is separate from its hosted MCP connector and uses an API token for requests. Nanoleaf says a token lasts until the device is reset and can be revoked by deleting it; its security guide warns, “Treat tokens like passwords!” Do not paste a local API token into an AI chat or an untrusted connector. ChatGPT or Claude: how to choose
There is no cited head-to-head security test establishing that one assistant is universally safer for Nanoleaf control. Compare the options using the controls and practical requirements that apply to your account:
- Whether your plan, region, account role and workspace policy permit the connector.
- How clearly the assistant presents action details and what approval choices it offers.
- Whether you can enable only the tools you need and easily disconnect or revoke access.
- Whether your specific Nanoleaf model and firmware support the lighting operation you want.
- Whether you are comfortable keeping Nanoleaf Desktop and its computer running while connected.
Nanoleaf says its MCP integration is free for Nanoleaf customers; that does not establish the cost or eligibility of your ChatGPT or Claude plan. Check the current plan terms with the relevant assistant provider.
