Connect the camera’s Ethernet port to a switch port that explicitly supports PoE, then confirm the switch can supply the camera’s required IEEE PoE standard and power. If the camera does not start, check port settings, the switch’s shared power budget and the cable. If it starts but the NVR or computer cannot find it, troubleshoot network reachability and discovery separately from power.
Before connecting: check PoE compatibility
A matching RJ45 connector does not guarantee that a switch can power a camera. A standard Ethernet port can carry network data without supplying power, so check the exact switch model and port specifications before connecting the camera.
- Camera: Find the exact model’s manual or specifications and note its supported PoE standard and power requirement.
- Switch port: Confirm that the intended port supports PoE, provides a compatible standard and has the required per-port capacity. Make sure PoE is enabled and the port is not administratively disabled.
- Nonstandard power: Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for any proprietary or nonstandard power mode rather than assuming IEEE PoE compatibility.
NETGEAR describes 802.3bt switches as supporting 802.3bt, 802.3at and 802.3af powered devices, and 802.3at switches as supporting 802.3at and 802.3af devices. Compatibility is not universal in the other direction: the manual for one Panasonic camera, for example, says that particular 802.3at camera cannot use an 802.3af source. Check the specific camera and switch documentation, not just the standard labels. See NETGEAR’s PoE guide and the Panasonic camera manual.
Connect the camera to the switch
- Identify the camera’s Ethernet/PoE connection and the switch port documented as PoE-capable.
- Connect them with an Ethernet cable. NETGEAR recommends Cat5e or higher for the troubleshooting guidance in its PoE switch support page.
- If using an injector instead of a PoE switch port, connect its labeled camera/PoE and LAN sides as its manual directs. Verify that the injector’s standard and power support match the camera. Amcrest describes connecting a PoE switch port to a camera over Ethernet and notes that its injectors are IEEE 802.3af compliant; that does not establish compatibility with every camera or injector. See Amcrest’s setup guides.
- Check the switch interface or status indicators and the camera’s indicators or manual to determine whether the camera receives power and establishes a network link. Indicator meanings vary by model.
Check the switch’s total PoE budget
PoE capacity has two constraints: the power available on an individual port and the switch’s aggregate budget shared among its powered devices. A switch can have many PoE-labeled ports without being able to deliver each port’s maximum simultaneously.

- Find the switch’s published total PoE budget and per-port capabilities in its datasheet or management interface.
- Check the stated power needs of the camera and every other device drawing PoE from that switch.
- Compare the combined demand with the aggregate budget, while checking that the camera’s port can meet its individual requirement.
- If the switch reports an over-budget condition or a port loses power, consult its documentation for allocation and priority behavior before changing port assignments.
NETGEAR gives examples of some Ultra60 switches supporting up to 60 W per port and some Ultra90 switches supporting up to 90 W; these are product-specific examples, not a camera requirement or a general switch rating. Its support guidance also describes power priority behavior on its switches in which higher-numbered active ports can lose power when aggregate demand exceeds the budget. Check whether the installed switch behaves that way in the NETGEAR PoE guide and its own documentation.

- Check the port: Confirm that PoE is enabled, the port is active and its power allocation is not blocked by a port limit or an aggregate-budget issue.
- Swap the cable: Test with a short, known-good Cat5e-or-higher cable if practical. NETGEAR advises trying a different cable and notes that a shorter cable may help when power is insufficient. Its support page lists 328 feet (100 meters) as the maximum cable length used in its power-class tables; treat that as context for those tables, not a guarantee of usable reach for every cable, installation or extended-mode product. See NETGEAR’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Try another compatible port: Use a port whose PoE standard and per-port capability meet the camera’s requirements.
- Test an alternate approved power source: If the camera permits it, try another compliant PoE switch or injector, or the camera’s approved external power supply. Do not connect an unapproved supply.
- Use the results to narrow the fault: These tests can help distinguish a camera, switch, cable or installed-run problem, but they do not by themselves identify which component has failed.
A cable tester can be an optional way to investigate a suspect installed run. Swapping in a known-good cable is the documented first diagnostic step; no particular tester or model is established here.
If the camera powers on but the NVR cannot find it
When the camera starts, separate power troubleshooting from network discovery. A powered camera may still be unreachable because of its network path or configuration.

- Confirm that the camera is connected to the intended network and that the viewing device or NVR has a path to it.
- Check whether VLAN settings or port isolation prevent communication between the camera and the viewing device or recorder. Switches vary, so use the installed switch’s manual for the exact settings.
- Follow the camera and NVR manuals for address assignment, discovery, credentials and recording setup. There is no universal default address or discovery procedure established for all camera and NVR models.
Managed switches may offer features such as VLAN configuration, port isolation, cable testing or remote reboot, but availability and controls vary by model. TP-Link advertises a long-distance mode on some surveillance switches; that is a product-specific feature, not a general Ethernet or PoE distance allowance. See TP-Link’s PoE switch information.

| Option | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PoE switch | The existing switch has no PoE ports, lacks compatible ports or cannot meet the planned load. | Camera-compatible IEEE standard, per-port capability, aggregate PoE budget, needed port count and network speed. |
| PoE injector | The camera needs PoE but the network path uses a non-PoE switch, and a separate power source suits the topology. | Injector standard and power rating, camera compatibility, and the correct labeled connections. |
| Ethernet cable | A known-good cable substitution restores power or link, or the installed cable is suspect. | Use a suitable Cat5e-or-higher cable and check the manufacturer-approved reach for the equipment and installation. |
| Managed switch | You need a model-specific management feature such as VLANs, port controls or remote reboot. | Confirm that the exact model supports the required feature; management is not necessary for every camera setup. |
Before choosing between equipment, compare the standards and per-port power, total PoE budget, required port count and speed, any management features you actually need, and manufacturer-approved cable reach. Product documentation is the authority for those specifications; the NETGEAR PoE guide, Panasonic camera manual, TP-Link PoE switch information and Amcrest setup guides illustrate why model-specific checks matter.
