To connect an AI assistant to WordPress with the Model Context Protocol (MCP), choose the connection that matches your hosting setup. WordPress.com sites and self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack can use WordPress.com’s hosted MCP server at https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1 and authorize it in a browser with OAuth 2.1. A completely self-hosted site can install the official WordPress MCP Adapter and expose capabilities from the site itself. WordPress.org also offers a separate MCP server for plugin-directory development, not ordinary post or page management.
Start with read-only access, test a harmless request such as listing recent posts, and grant write permissions only after you understand which tools the assistant can call.
Which WordPress MCP connection should I use?
Your hosting arrangement determines the correct MCP server. The three routes are different in purpose, authentication and maintenance.

The hosted route is usually the least operational work: there is no adapter package to deploy, and authentication is handled in a browser. The trade-off is that your tools operate through the connected WordPress.com account and the permissions exposed by that service. The on-site adapter gives a self-hosted administrator more control over where the connection runs, but it also makes WordPress and PHP compatibility, plugin updates, backups and server security your responsibility.
What does MCP change when an assistant works with WordPress?
MCP is a standard interface through which an AI client discovers tools and resources. Instead of asking an assistant to guess how WordPress is structured, the client presents registered capabilities, requests your authorization, calls the selected tool and returns the result to the model.
On a site using the official adapter, WordPress abilities are mapped into discoverable MCP tools. Depending on the installation and the tools registered by its plugins, an assistant may be able to read site data, inspect resources or propose actions. The connection does not give the language model an unrestricted database channel; the MCP client and WordPress permissions control what is available.

That distinction matters when you compare a content assistant with an automation account. A tool might list posts, retrieve a draft, create content, update metadata or perform another action registered by WordPress. Those are separate capabilities, not a guarantee that every MCP client can perform every WordPress operation. The assistant can only call tools that the selected server advertises and that the connected identity is allowed to use.
WordPress.com describes its design this way: “At no point in time is data shared between the MCP server and the LLM that you don’t have complete control over.” You should still review every requested action, because a tool that can write is materially more consequential than one that only reads.
How do I connect WordPress.com or a Jetpack-connected site?
Use the hosted endpoint when your site is on WordPress.com or is self-hosted but connected through Jetpack. WordPress.com documents MCP access for every WordPress.com plan, including free sites; a Jetpack-connected self-hosted site can use the same service without a Jetpack plan. The important requirement is the WordPress.com account and site connection used during authorization, not a particular paid tier.
1. Enable MCP access in your WordPress.com account
Sign in to the WordPress.com account that controls the site and enable MCP access in the account settings. If several sites are attached to the account, confirm which site the assistant should be allowed to reach. This is a useful point to remove old or unused site connections as well, so the authorization screen presents a manageable list.
2. Add the hosted server URL to your MCP client
Use this exact server URL:
https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1
Most MCP-capable applications have an option such as “Add server,” “Add MCP server” or a configuration file where you enter an HTTP server address. Use the client’s normal remote-server flow rather than creating a local command that proxies the connection. A typo in the path, especially omitting /wpcom/v2/mcp/v1, can make a healthy account look like an unavailable server.
3. Complete browser authorization
When the client starts the connection, it opens a WordPress.com authorization page. The service uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE, dynamic client registration, token rotation and expiring access tokens. Approve the requested account and site only after checking the client name and destination. The browser step is intentional: credentials are entered at WordPress.com rather than copied into an assistant prompt or a plain-text configuration file.
If the authorization window opens under the wrong WordPress.com identity, stop rather than accepting the first option. Sign out of unrelated accounts or use a private browser window, then restart the client flow. When an account controls multiple sites, read the site selector carefully and choose the installation that matches your intended workflow.

4. Select the least access you need
Choose read-only access while evaluating the integration. Full access enables both read and write tools; read-only disables write tools. WordPress.com also lets you customize individual tools later, so a writing assistant can receive only the operations required for a specific workflow. For example, an editorial helper may need to read posts and update drafts but not delete content or change settings.

5. Test a read operation first
Ask the assistant to list recent posts or inspect a small, non-sensitive piece of site information. Confirm that the returned site and content are the ones you intended to connect before allowing any update, publication or deletion operation. Test one narrowly scoped request at a time and compare the result with the WordPress dashboard; this catches an incorrect account or site selection early.
Client examples
For Claude Code, add the server from a terminal, then authenticate in the client:

Run /mcp in Claude Code to start the authorization flow.
For Codex, add the server with:
codex mcp add wpcom-mcp --url https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1
Authentication is normally automatic; if it does not start, run:
codex mcp login wpcom-mcp
Cursor, VS Code, Gemini and Perplexity use their own MCP configuration screens or files, but the server address remains the same. Their menus and labels can change, so follow the client’s remote HTTP MCP instructions and use the endpoint exactly as shown. Do not paste an OAuth access token into a prompt as a substitute for the browser flow.
How do I connect a completely self-hosted WordPress site?
Install the official MCP Adapter on the WordPress installation when the site is not using the hosted WordPress.com route. The adapter is maintained by the WordPress AI Team and runs on your site, so you are responsible for compatibility, updates, hosting security and access control.

- WordPress 6.9 or higher.
- PHP 7.4 or higher.
- An MCP-compatible AI client.
- Administrator access to install and activate a plugin, or equivalent deployment access.
Check the PHP and WordPress versions on the actual production site, not only on a staging copy. A staging site can be useful for testing, but it may expose different plugins, users or registered abilities from production.

Install and activate the adapter
- Download
mcp-adapter.zipfrom the official MCP Adapter GitHub Releases page. - In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin.
- Upload
mcp-adapter.zip, install it and activate the plugin. - Configure the adapter and the MCP client according to the site’s deployment and authentication requirements.
The official lesson also documents a WP-CLI installation method. Use that method when plugin deployment is managed from the command line, but do not bypass your normal change-control and backup process. Record the adapter version, activation date and configuration owner so another administrator can understand the connection later.
Understand the permission boundary
The Automattic wordpress-mcp implementation states that default MCP operations require administrator privileges and rely on standard WordPress capabilities. In practice, that means a client with a powerful account may be able to perform consequential site actions. Connect only clients you trust, use a dedicated account where appropriate, and review the capabilities granted to that account.
Do not assume that installing the adapter alone creates useful editorial tools. The adapter exposes abilities registered by WordPress and its plugins. If a required operation is not registered, the assistant cannot invent it; install or configure the appropriate integration only after checking that it is compatible with the adapter and your security policy.
How do I use the WordPress.org MCP server?
Use this route only for WordPress plugin-directory development. It helps an author read plugin guidelines, validate a readme, check submission status and submit a plugin; it is not the general-purpose MCP connection for managing posts, pages or settings on a production site.
Quick setup
The documented quick-start command is:
npx -y @wporg/mcp
You need a WordPress.org account, an MCP-compatible client and Node.js 18 or later. Node.js is a prerequisite for this command even when the WordPress site itself is hosted elsewhere. Keep the command and its credentials in the development environment used for plugin work, not in a production WordPress server unless that is part of your documented process.
Manual endpoint setup
The WordPress.org handbook lists this endpoint:

Its manual configuration uses the environment values WP_API_URL, WP_API_USERNAME and WP_API_PASSWORD. The application password is displayed once after authorization, so store it in a secrets manager or another protected location immediately. Do not paste it into a prompt, commit it to a repository or place it in a publicly readable configuration file. If the password is lost, create a replacement through the normal WordPress.org authorization process rather than guessing or reusing a regular account password.
How should I configure authentication and permissions safely?
Authentication answers who is connecting; WordPress capabilities determine what that connection can do. Treat both layers as part of the integration design. Hosted OAuth gives you an account-level consent screen and revocation controls. A self-hosted adapter depends more directly on the site’s user roles, capabilities and client configuration.

Begin with read-only access
- Use read-only mode while checking that the assistant sees the correct site.
- Test listing posts, pages or other harmless resources before attempting a change.
- Enable only the write tools required for the task, such as drafting or updating a specific content type.
- Keep a human approval step before a post goes live, deletion, user changes or configuration edits.
- Ask the assistant to identify the target by an exact post ID or slug when a write is approved.
Protect the self-hosted route
- Keep WordPress, PHP, the adapter and related plugins within their supported versions.
- Use normal WordPress roles and capabilities instead of giving every connected client an administrator account.
- Connect only AI clients that you trust and can identify.
- Review server logs and WordPress activity records when an assistant performs write operations.
- Back up the site before enabling a new write-capable integration.
- Test updates on staging when the site’s deployment process supports it, then repeat the authorization and capability checks on production.
A prompt is not a security boundary. State the allowed scope in the prompt, but enforce the real boundary with OAuth settings, tool selection, WordPress roles and server controls. Also make the assistant report what it changed, the resulting post status and any error returned by WordPress.
Revoke a hosted connection
For WordPress.com OAuth connections, open Security → Connected applications in your account and revoke the client. Revocation is useful when you stop using an assistant, lose confidence in a client or need to rotate access during an incident. Because access tokens expire and rotate, do not treat a token found in an old log as a permanent credential; revoke the connection and review the logs anyway.
What can I ask the connected assistant to do?
The available operations depend on the route, the tools registered by WordPress and your permissions. Good first requests are narrow and observable:

- List the five most recent posts and show their status.
- Find drafts containing a particular phrase without changing them.
- Read the title, excerpt and categories of a named post.
- Prepare proposed edits in the response rather than applying them.
- After approval, update one identified draft and report the resulting status.
- Compare the current title and excerpt with a proposed version, without saving either one.
- Return the exact tool result and WordPress status after a requested update.
Phrase destructive or high-impact requests with explicit limits. For example, identify a post by its exact ID or slug, state whether the change should be a draft or a publication, and ask the assistant to show the proposed result before it calls a write tool. Avoid broad instructions such as “clean up the site” until you know which tools and records the client will select.
What are the most common connection problems?
The client cannot discover the server
Check that you entered the hosted endpoint exactly, including /wpcom/v2/mcp/v1, and that the client supports remote HTTP MCP servers. For a self-hosted adapter, verify that the plugin is active and that the site meets WordPress 6.9 and PHP 7.4 requirements. For the WordPress.org route, confirm Node.js 18 or later when using the npx command.
Authorization returns to the wrong account
Sign out of unrelated WordPress.com accounts in the browser, restart the client’s login flow and select the account that owns the intended site. If multiple sites are attached, inspect the authorization choices rather than assuming the first site shown is correct. A successful OAuth callback does not prove that the selected site is the one you meant to connect.
The assistant can read but cannot write
On the hosted route, read-only access intentionally disables write tools; change the access level or individual tool settings only after testing. On a self-hosted route, check the connected WordPress user’s role and capabilities and confirm that the requested ability is registered by the site. Also verify that the client has refreshed its tool list after a permission or plugin change.
The assistant sees no useful site tools
An MCP connection exposes what the selected server and installed abilities provide. The WordPress.org server will not expose ordinary site-editing tools, and a self-hosted adapter cannot offer capabilities that no plugin or integration has registered. Confirm that you connected the intended route rather than a plugin-directory endpoint.
A token or application password was exposed
Revoke the affected WordPress.com connected application or invalidate the exposed application password, then create a replacement through the normal authorization flow. Remove the secret from shell history, logs and source control, and review recent activity for unexpected changes. If a write-capable identity was exposed, treat the incident as urgent and temporarily disable its access while reviewing the site.
The site works in the dashboard but not through MCP
Dashboard access does not automatically mean an MCP tool exists for the same action. Check the server’s advertised tools, the connected user’s capabilities and the adapter’s supported WordPress and PHP versions. A feature supplied by a plugin may also need that plugin’s ability registration before an MCP client can discover it.

WordPress.com documents MCP access on every WordPress.com plan, including free sites, and says a self-hosted site connected through Jetpack can use the hosted service without a Jetpack plan. The documentation does not establish a separate MCP usage price. A self-hosted adapter does not remove your ordinary hosting, maintenance, backup or security responsibilities, and the WordPress.org development route still requires the documented Node.js and account prerequisites.
Which route is best for a typical workflow?
Choose the hosted WordPress.com endpoint when the site is on WordPress.com or already connected through Jetpack and you want the shortest setup with browser OAuth. Choose the MCP Adapter when the site is fully self-hosted and you need capabilities to run within your own WordPress installation, accepting the version and maintenance responsibility. Choose the WordPress.org server only when your task concerns developing or submitting a plugin to the directory.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI assistant publish a WordPress post without asking me each time?
It can do so only if the connected server exposes a publication tool and the account has the required write capability. Whether that is wise depends on your review process; a safer pattern is to let the assistant create or update a draft and require a human to publish it.
Does a Jetpack-connected site need a paid Jetpack plan for MCP?
No. The documented hosted service can be used by self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack without a Jetpack plan. The site still needs to be connected to the WordPress.com account used for authorization.
Where can I see which MCP tools an assistant is allowed to use?
For a hosted connection, review the access level and individual tool settings in the WordPress.com authorization and account controls. For a self-hosted connection, inspect the adapter configuration, registered abilities and the WordPress capabilities of the connected user.

Can I connect more than one WordPress site to the same assistant?
That depends on the MCP client’s support for multiple server entries and on the account authorization choices. Add each site as a separately named connection and include the site name in prompts so an edit is not sent to the wrong installation.

Revoke the WordPress.com client under Security → Connected applications. For a self-hosted setup, disable or remove the client connection, review the WordPress user’s capabilities and inspect logs for unexpected activity. Replace any exposed application password.
Why can the assistant list posts but not update one?
The connection may be read-only, the relevant write tool may be disabled, the WordPress user may lack the required capability or the site may not have registered that ability. Check each layer rather than assuming the MCP connection is broken.
