Connect your laptop to an input supported by the powered speaker system or amplifier that drives the subwoofer—not to a bare passive subwoofer. Use Bluetooth, USB audio, or an analog AUX connection only when both devices support that method, then select the matching input on the speaker system and the playback device on the laptop.
Check compatibility before connecting
“Subwoofer” can refer to the bass speaker in a powered 2.1 system, its speaker hub, or a standalone passive speaker. Look at the model label, manual, and input panel to identify what you have and which inputs it accepts.
- Powered speaker system or hub: Connect the laptop to a supported input on the system. The system’s amplifier drives the subwoofer.
- Passive subwoofer: It has no built-in amplifier and cannot connect directly to a laptop. Teufel explains that passive subwoofers connect to an amplifier using speaker cables (Teufel Support). Connect the laptop to a suitable amplifier or receiver instead.
- Wireless subwoofer paired to a speaker system: Its radio link may be proprietary rather than Bluetooth. Teufel notes that its subwoofer connection uses a special radio link, not Bluetooth; connect the laptop to the system’s hub, not to the subwoofer’s wireless link.
Choose a connection method

All three methods require the speaker system or amplifier to be powered. The connector, source controls, and operating-system menus vary by model. The available manufacturer instructions do not establish a universally best-sounding connection, so choose based on supported inputs and your setup.
Connect over Bluetooth
- Turn on the powered speaker system and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode using the model’s instructions.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the laptop, scan for devices, and pair with the speaker system.
- Open the laptop’s sound-output settings and select the paired system as the playback device.
- Play audio and check the laptop, app, and speaker-system volume.
Menu names and pairing steps differ between operating systems and devices. Sony cautions that its general pairing process varies by Bluetooth device and computer operating system (Sony’s computer-pairing guide). A subwoofer’s proprietary wireless connection to its speaker hub does not by itself make the subwoofer a Bluetooth receiver.

Connect by USB audio
- Check the speaker-system manual to confirm that its USB port carries audio and identify the supported connector and cable.
- Connect the system to the laptop using a compatible USB data cable.
- Switch the system to its USB input if required.
- In the laptop’s sound settings, select the speaker system as the playback device, then test audio.
USB ports and controls are model-specific. For example, Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Lumina uses USB-C and directs users to select “ProMedia Lumina” in computer sound settings (Klipsch ProMedia Lumina FAQs). Logitech Z407’s instructions describe a micro-USB port and a wired-input control (Logitech Z407 setup guide). These examples do not mean that every USB port on a speaker system supports audio.
Connect through the laptop’s audio jack
- Connect the laptop’s headphone or audio output to the speaker system’s AUX or analog input. Use the cable that matches the actual ports—commonly 3.5 mm-to-3.5 mm or 3.5 mm-to-RCA.
- Select AUX, Analog, or the equivalent input on the speaker system if it does not switch automatically.
- Select the laptop’s headphone output in sound settings if needed, then play audio and adjust levels.
If your laptop has no separate headphone jack, use an adapter compatible with its audio output and the speaker system’s input. The system’s input-selection controls are not universal: Logitech Z407 uses a wired-input button for its 3.5 mm mode, while Klipsch The Fives instructions call for selecting “Analog” (Logitech Z407 setup guide; Klipsch The Fives control options).

Fix a connection with no sound
- Confirm power: Make sure the speaker system or amplifier is on.
- Check the selected source: Match it to the connection in use—Bluetooth, USB, AUX, or Analog.
- Check laptop output: In Windows, Microsoft’s instructions point to Settings > System > Sound to select an external playback device (Microsoft Surface audio instructions). On other operating systems, use the corresponding sound-output settings.
- Check volume at each point: Raise the laptop and speaker-system volume, and make sure the app playing audio is not muted.
- For a wired connection: Reseat both ends of the cable and verify that it matches the system’s input. A charging-only USB cable or a cable plugged into the wrong input will not provide the intended audio connection.
- For Bluetooth: Confirm the system is paired and connected, then repeat pairing according to its manual if needed. Check whether it is connected to another source.
Follow the specific product manual for exact pairing, source-switching, or reset steps; controls and procedures differ across models.
