To read coordinates on an Arduino Uno, use a UART GNSS breakout documented as safe for a 5 V Uno, connect its TX output to an Uno receive pin, and parse its NMEA output with a library such as TinyGPSPlus. Check the breakout’s power-input and UART logic-level specifications first: a bare GNSS chip or module is not necessarily 5 V tolerant.

What you need to check before wiring

“GPS” is one satellite navigation system; “GNSS” is the broader term for receivers that may use multiple systems. The u-blox NEO-M8 family lists GPS/QZSS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BeiDou, with up to three systems received concurrently across the family. Capabilities vary by variant, so verify the exact receiver and breakout documentation. u-blox NEO-M8 series

The breakout board—not just the GNSS chip—determines how it can be powered and connected. The NEO-M8 series documentation lists variant-dependent supply ranges of 2.7–3.6 V and a maximum supply of 3.6 V. That specification is for the receiver module, not every carrier board: a breakout may add a regulator or level shifting, but do not assume it does. Confirm the board’s input-voltage range and UART signal levels before connecting it to the Uno’s 5 V supply or signal pins. u-blox NEO-M8 series

  • Choose a UART GNSS breakout whose documentation explicitly supports your supply voltage and 5 V Uno logic, or provides the required regulation and level shifting.
  • Check the receiver variant, antenna connection and requirements, UART baud rate, and default output messages.
  • Do not treat a product title that says “Arduino compatible” as a substitute for checking its electrical specifications.

How to wire a UART GNSS breakout to an Uno

The Uno R3 has one hardware UART on digital pins 0 (RX) and 1 (TX), and those pins are connected to the USB-to-serial chip. For a simple setup that also uses the USB Serial Monitor, a software serial port on other digital pins can keep receiver traffic separate from USB output. The Uno R3 operates at 5 V and has 14 digital I/O pins and six analog inputs. Arduino Uno R3 documentation

GY-NEO6MV2 NEO-6M GPS Module for Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi, ESP32 2pcs
  • Accurate Positioning: Based on NEO-6MV2, supports GPS and GLONASS, supports simultaneous tracking of 22 satellites, tracking sensitivity -162dBm, cold-start sensitivity -148 dBm, positioning accuracy up to ±2.5m in open environments, stable positioning even in complex environments such as urban canyons or dense jungles
  • Low Power Consumption: Supporting 3.3V-5V power supply, the continuous operating current is 67mA, 11mA in standby mode, and 1mA during sleep, which ensures the positioning accuracy while controlling the energy consumption to the maximum, especially suitable for the scenarios that are sensitive to the endurance, and significantly reduces the cost of post maintenance
  • Hardware Interface: Standard UART-TTL level, support 3.3V/5V dual voltage compatibility, can be directly connected to Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32 and other development boards; 4Pin interface ( VCC, GND, TX, RX), reserved hardware reset pin; baud rate support 4800bps~115200bps (default 9600bps), real-time switching through AT instructions or UBX commands, to adapt to different master performance
  • Plug and Play: Onboard EEPROM chip operates independently of the main control chip, saves configuration parameters after power failure, and automatically reads the parameters (baud rate, positioning mode, NMEA statement screening) from the EEPROM when the power is on, eliminating the need to repeat the initialisation, and realising Plug and Play
  • Widely Application: Widely used in vehicle monitoring, UAV navigation, handheld terminals and other scenarios that require high-precision positioning. You can also combine with Arduino, STM32, LoRa module, etc. to quickly build GPS tracker, weather station and other IoT applications
GNSS breakout connection Arduino Uno connection Purpose
TX Chosen software-serial RX pin Sends NMEA data from receiver to the Uno.
GND GND Provides a shared electrical reference.
Power input Supply specified by the breakout documentation Powers the breakout within its rated input range.
RX Chosen software-serial TX pin, only if needed Lets the Uno send configuration commands. Verify signal-level compatibility first.

For receive-only coordinate reading, the receiver’s TX, ground, and correctly rated power connections are the essentials; leave the receiver RX unconnected unless you need to configure it. UART directions are named from each device’s perspective, so receiver TX goes to the Uno’s RX input.

Set the serial speed and read NMEA data

Many receivers send position and other navigation data as NMEA sentences over UART. The NEO-M8 data sheet specifies a default UART setting of 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and one stop bit (8-N-1), with several NMEA messages enabled at startup. Other receivers or firmware configurations may differ; follow the documentation for the specific board. u-blox NEO-M8 data sheet

A parser turns the incoming character stream into fields such as latitude and longitude. TinyGPSPlus is a library for parsing NMEA streams from GPS modules. TinyGPSPlus project

  1. Identify the breakout’s documented UART baud rate and configure the software-serial receiver port to match it. For a NEO-M8 using its documented default, use 9600 baud and 8-N-1.
  2. Keep the Uno’s hardware Serial available for USB output to the Serial Monitor, and initialize software serial on the digital pins selected for receiver communication.
  3. Pass each character received from the GNSS port to the NMEA parser. Print parsed values to the USB serial connection for inspection.
  4. Before using a coordinate, check that the parser reports a valid location and that the location has been updated recently. Receiving raw NMEA characters alone does not establish that the receiver has a valid position fix.

Software serial is convenient for separating a receiver from USB monitoring, but it has implementation and timing limits. If your project adds other time-sensitive tasks or several serial devices, account for those constraints rather than assuming software serial behaves like another hardware UART.

Get a first position fix

Test outdoors with a clear view of the sky and give the receiver time to acquire satellites. There is no single reliable first-fix time or accuracy figure for an unspecified breakout: both depend on the receiver, antenna, configuration, sky visibility, and other conditions. Avoid treating a particular wait time or accuracy as guaranteed unless it is documented for the exact hardware and conditions.

Troubleshoot missing or invalid coordinates

  • No characters arrive: Check that receiver TX goes to the Uno’s selected software-serial RX pin, the grounds are shared, the breakout is powered within its specified range, and the sketch uses the receiver’s configured baud rate.
  • Characters arrive but do not parse: Confirm the stream contains NMEA messages and that the parser is being fed each received character. Check the board documentation for its default output and serial settings.
  • Data parses but location is invalid or stale: Do not use the coordinate yet. Check the parser’s validity and update-age information, then test with a clearer sky view and allow acquisition time.
  • The board may be electrically incompatible: Stop and verify the breakout’s supply input and UART logic levels. A bare NEO-M8 module’s listed maximum supply is 3.6 V; that does not establish that an unspecified carrier board accepts 5 V.

When to choose a different board or receiver

When comparing receiver boards, check their documented power input and UART logic levels, supported constellations, antenna options, baud rate and default messages, and the documentation for the exact variant. A bare module and a breakout are different wiring choices. The NEO-M8 family page marks NEO-M8N-0 as NRND and recommends NEO-M8M-0 for new designs; verify the status and board-level specifications before choosing a particular variant. u-blox NEO-M8 series
