For most TVs, connect the Bose soundbar to the television’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. That single connection carries TV audio and can allow volume and power control through HDMI-CEC. If the TV has no ARC/eARC, use an optical cable from the TV’s optical OUT to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN. A standard HDMI input will not return TV audio to the soundbar. When audio fails, check the selected output, mute and volume, ARC/CEC settings, cable seating, software updates and power sequence before changing equipment. The steps below apply broadly to Bose soundbars, including Smart Soundbar models, although menu names and available formats vary by TV and soundbar model.

Which connection should I use for a Bose soundbar?

Use HDMI ARC or eARC when both the TV and soundbar provide those ports. It is the preferred connection because it carries TV audio over one HDMI cable and can use HDMI-CEC for shared power and volume commands. Use optical when ARC/eARC is unavailable or when HDMI-CEC compatibility is unreliable.

Feature HDMI ARC/eARC Optical
TV port required HDMI port specifically labeled ARC or eARC Optical digital audio OUT/output
Soundbar port HDMI ARC OPTICAL IN
TV control Can carry HDMI-CEC commands for power and volume, when enabled and compatible Does not carry HDMI-CEC commands
Audio capability eARC provides higher bandwidth for advanced formats such as Dolby Atmos; ARC capabilities depend on the TV, source and soundbar Supports the formats available through the TV’s optical output, with less bandwidth than eARC
Best use Primary one-cable setup Fallback or workaround for ARC/CEC problems
Extra hardware High Speed HDMI cable or better TOSLINK optical cable; converter only if the TV lacks optical output

Check the labels on the physical ports rather than assuming that every HDMI socket works the same way. The soundbar must be connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC socket, not a regular HDMI input.

How do I connect a Bose soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC?

HDMI is the simplest option when the required ports are present. Complete the wiring first, then select the TV’s external audio output and enable the control settings your television uses.

  • HEAR YOUR TV BETTER: Designed with simplicity in mind, the Bose TV Speaker is an all-in-one soundbar that clarifies speech and is a simple fix for better TV sound
  • WIDE, NATURAL SOUND: 2 angled full-range drivers deliver a more realistic, spatial audio experience for overall better TV sound from a small soundbar
  • ENHANCED DIALOGUE: This sound bar for smart tv is designed to specifically focus on clarifying and elevating vocals and pronunciation
  • BLUETOOTH TV SPEAKER: Pair your device to this Bluetooth soundbar to wirelessly stream your favorite music and podcasts. Connect up to 3 devices through the inputs (HDMI, Optical in, and AUX in); the first powered on device will automatically connect
  • SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
  1. Locate the ports. Find the TV socket labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. On the Bose soundbar, locate the socket labeled HDMI ARC. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Use the correct cable. Connect a High Speed HDMI cable or better between those two labeled ports. If audio cuts out, Bose recommends trying a different High Speed HDMI cable.
  3. Turn on the soundbar and TV. Select the TV source on the Bose soundbar if it does not switch automatically.
  4. Choose external audio in the TV menu. Look for a setting such as Sound output, Audio output, Receiver, External speaker or Soundbar. Select the external device rather than the internal TV speakers.
  5. Enable ARC/eARC. Some televisions have a separate ARC or eARC toggle. Set it to enabled or automatic. If the TV offers an eARC mode, use it when the soundbar and source support it; otherwise use the available ARC mode.
  6. Enable HDMI-CEC. CEC may be called a manufacturer-specific name, so consult the TV’s manual if you cannot find it. CEC is what allows compatible devices to exchange power and volume commands; it is separate from the physical ARC label.
  7. Test a TV channel and an app. Raise the soundbar volume and confirm that the TV indicates an external audio device. Test more than one source to determine whether the issue is limited to a particular app or input.

If the TV has several HDMI sockets, only the one marked ARC/eARC returns sound from the TV’s built-in tuner and apps. Connecting to a normal HDMI input can still show video from an external device while producing no TV audio through the soundbar.

How do I connect a Bose soundbar with an optical cable?

Optical is the reliable fallback when the TV has no ARC/eARC or when HDMI-CEC causes repeated compatibility problems. It carries digital audio but not HDMI control commands, so volume and power behavior may differ from an HDMI setup.

  1. Find the TV’s optical output. Use the socket labeled Optical OUT or Digital Audio OUT. A socket labeled IN cannot send TV audio.
  2. Remove protective caps. TOSLINK connectors often have small plastic caps. Remove them before inserting the cable.
  3. Connect the cable. Plug one end into the TV’s optical OUT and the other into the Bose soundbar’s OPTICAL IN. The connector should seat firmly without being forced.
  4. Select the TV source. Choose the TV or optical source on the soundbar, depending on the model’s remote or app labels.
  5. Set the TV’s audio output. Select optical, digital audio out or external speaker output. If the TV asks for a digital format and a particular format produces silence, try the compatible automatic or PCM option, then test again.
  6. Test at moderate volume. Confirm that the soundbar is not muted and that the TV is no longer routing sound only to its internal speakers.

Optical is also a useful diagnostic step. If the soundbar works immediately over optical but not over HDMI, the speakers and TV audio are probably functioning; the remaining problem is likely ARC wiring, CEC settings, cable quality or cross-brand compatibility.

What if my TV has neither HDMI ARC/eARC nor optical output?

A TV without ARC/eARC and optical output is not directly compatible with Bose’s Smart Ultra Soundbar setup guidance. If the only outputs are analog, coaxial or 3.5 mm, an audio converter may be required, and the correct converter depends on the exact output type and the soundbar input available.

  • Identify the TV output precisely: analog left/right, 3.5 mm headphone, coaxial digital or another connector.
  • Choose a converter that accepts that output and provides an input the soundbar supports.
  • Check whether the converter needs USB or wall power.
  • Expect to control volume with the TV or soundbar remote rather than HDMI-CEC when the signal no longer travels through HDMI.
  • Verify the converter’s supported audio format before buying; a format mismatch can result in silence even when the wiring is correct.

Do not connect a cable by appearance alone. Coaxial digital, analog and optical signals are different, and a passive cable cannot convert one signal type into another.

Why is there no sound from my Bose soundbar?

Work through the checks in order. They eliminate the most common causes without changing several settings at once.

1. Check power, mute and source selection

  • Confirm that the soundbar has power and shows its normal status indicator.
  • Press mute once to clear a mute state, then raise the soundbar volume.
  • Select another source on the soundbar. If another source plays normally, the fault is probably limited to the TV connection or TV settings.
  • Make sure the TV itself is not muted and that its volume is not set to zero.

2. Verify the physical port

  • For HDMI, the cable must run from the TV’s port labeled ARC/eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI ARC port.
  • For optical, the cable must run from the TV’s optical OUT/output to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN.
  • Reseat both ends. A connector that is only partly inserted can cause silence or intermittent audio.

3. Select the correct TV output

Open the TV’s sound or audio menu and select an external soundbar, receiver, HDMI ARC/eARC or optical output as appropriate. Menu labels differ by manufacturer. If the TV offers both internal speakers and an external output, choose the external option or turn the internal speakers off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check ARC and CEC settings

For HDMI, enable ARC/eARC and the TV’s HDMI-CEC feature. CEC has different names on different televisions, so use the TV manual if the setting is not obvious. A TV can have ARC enabled while CEC remains disabled, which may prevent automatic switching or volume control.

5. Replace the HDMI cable if audio is intermittent

Use another High Speed HDMI cable or better. A cable can pass video from an external source yet still fail to maintain a stable ARC audio connection. If a replacement cable does not help, switch temporarily to optical to bypass HDMI-CEC and ARC negotiation.

6. Power-cycle every device

Turn off the TV, source device and soundbar. Unplug the soundbar and any optional Bose modules for 30 seconds, then reconnect them. Reconnect devices to power in sequence, allowing the TV and soundbar to finish starting before testing TV audio again. This clears many handshake states that a normal remote-control restart does not.

7. Update software and isolate the source

Check for available TV and soundbar software updates. Test a broadcast channel, a built-in streaming app and an external HDMI source. If only one app or source fails, its audio-output or passthrough setting may be responsible rather than the soundbar connection.

Why does sound still come from the TV speakers?

The TV is still using its internal speaker output or has not recognized the ARC connection. Set the TV to External, Receiver, Soundbar or Fixed audio output, then verify the cable and CEC settings.

  1. Open the TV’s sound-output menu and disable internal speakers or select the external audio device.
  2. Confirm that the HDMI cable is in the ARC/eARC-labeled TV port, not a standard HDMI socket.
  3. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC if the TV provides separate switches.
  4. Reseat the HDMI cable and lower the TV’s own volume while testing.
  5. If routing still fails, connect optical and select optical output, or use optical alone as the permanent connection.

Some TVs briefly play through their own speakers during startup before switching to the soundbar. Judge the result after the TV has finished booting and a program is playing.

How do I fix poor, distorted or missing surround sound?

First determine whether the problem affects every source or only one device. Then verify the TV’s output format and passthrough settings instead of assuming the soundbar is defective.

Test the source and volume

  • Play a different channel, app or external source.
  • Reduce the volume on a connected source device if distortion occurs only from that device.
  • Check whether dialogue, music and effects are all affected or whether one channel is missing.

Check the TV’s surround and passthrough options

Confirm that the TV can output surround sound over the selected connection. Settings may include digital audio format, passthrough, bitstream, Dolby or PCM. The available choices depend on the TV, source and connection; use a compatible automatic or passthrough setting when supported.

Inspect the detected format in the Bose app

When TV audio is playing, open the Bose app and inspect the detected signal format. Formats that may appear include LPCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos and AAC. An unexpected format does not automatically mean the soundbar is faulty; review the TV and source device’s output and passthrough settings first.

eARC’s higher bandwidth can support advanced formats such as Dolby Atmos when the TV, source and soundbar all support them. Optical has lower bandwidth and may not carry the same advanced formats, so a change from eARC to optical can alter the format the soundbar reports.

How do I fix Bose soundbar audio delay or lip-sync problems?

A small processing delay can make speech appear out of sync with the picture. Use the TV or soundbar’s Audio Delay, Lip Sync or similarly named control to adjust timing.

  1. Play content with clear dialogue and pause on a visible mouth movement.
  2. Open the TV’s audio settings and look for Audio Delay or Lip Sync. If the TV has no useful control, check the Bose app or soundbar settings.
  3. Adjust in small increments, watching and listening after each change.
  4. Test another app or source. If only one source is delayed, inspect that device’s audio processing or passthrough setting.
  5. If delay appears only over HDMI, test optical. If it appears only over optical, return to ARC/eARC and check the TV’s processing mode.

The correct setting is the one that matches the specific source and display mode; changing the value for one input may not correct another.

What should I check before replacing the soundbar?

Use this short checklist after troubleshooting:

  • The TV port is labeled ARC/eARC, or the optical port is labeled OUT.
  • The soundbar input matches the cable: HDMI ARC or OPTICAL IN.
  • The TV output is set to an external device rather than internal speakers.
  • ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC are enabled for HDMI connections.
  • The soundbar and TV are not muted and their volumes are raised.
  • A different High Speed HDMI cable has been tested when HDMI audio is intermittent.
  • The soundbar, optional modules and TV were unplugged for 30 seconds and restarted in sequence.
  • TV and soundbar software are current.
  • Another source has been tested to separate a TV-routing problem from a speaker problem.
  • The Bose app’s detected format has been checked when surround sound is missing or unexpected.

If these checks fail with both HDMI and optical, note the exact Bose model, TV model, source, cable type and result of each test before contacting support. That information helps support staff distinguish a configuration issue from a hardware fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an old HDMI cable cause ARC audio to fail even when video works?

Yes. Video from a connected source can work while ARC audio remains unstable. Replacing the cable with a High Speed HDMI cable or better is a practical test, especially when audio drops out intermittently.

Can I control volume through an optical connection?

Optical carries audio but not HDMI-CEC commands. You may therefore need the Bose remote, Bose app or separate TV and soundbar controls instead of expecting the TV remote to control both devices automatically.

Why does my soundbar show PCM instead of Dolby audio?

The TV or source may be converting the signal to PCM rather than passing a Dolby bitstream through. Review the TV’s digital-audio and passthrough settings, then compare the detected format in the Bose app with another source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need both HDMI and optical cables connected?

Usually one connection is sufficient. HDMI ARC/eARC is the normal primary connection, while optical can be used alone or added as a troubleshooting fallback when ARC or CEC negotiation is unreliable.
