To configure SmartGuard on Android TV, install or update the hide.me app, sign in, connect to any hide.me VPN server, then open Settings > SmartGuard and enable the protections you want. SmartGuard is a DNS-based filter for ads, trackers, malicious websites and optional parental categories. It only operates while the hide.me VPN tunnel is connected, so enabling Settings > Auto Connect > Enable VPN helps it return after a TV restart or network change. You do not need to change Android TV’s DNS manually when you use the hide.me client.

What do I need before configuring SmartGuard?

You need an Android TV device running Android 7.0 or newer, the hide.me Android TV application, a hide.me account, and a Premium subscription. SmartGuard is a Premium feature. The Android TV application must also include the SmartGuard component; hide.me added SmartGuard to its TV app in version 6.1.0.

  • Compatible software: Android TV 7.0 or newer.
  • Application: the current hide.me Android TV app from Google Play, or hide.me’s official Android TV APK if Play Store installation is unavailable.
  • Account: valid hide.me credentials.
  • Connection: an active hide.me VPN tunnel. SmartGuard is not a standalone DNS switch that remains active when the VPN is disconnected.
  • Subscription: Premium access is required for SmartGuard.

SmartGuard filters DNS requests against lists of known advertising, tracking and malicious domains. Optional parental categories and custom allow or block entries are available from the SmartGuard page. Filtering is associated with the hide.me app’s active VPN connection; the documentation does not describe a separate per-app SmartGuard mode.

How can I check Android TV compatibility?

Check the TV’s Android version before installing anything. hide.me states that its Android TV app is designed for Android TV 7.0 and newer. Older televisions may not appear as compatible in Google Play, and sideloading an APK onto an unsupported version can produce installation or runtime errors.

Check the Android TV version

  1. Open Settings on the television.
  2. Choose Device Preferences or System; the wording varies by manufacturer.
  3. Open About and look for Android TV OS version or Android version.
  4. Install pending system updates if the device offers them, then check the version again.

If the device reports Android 7.0 or later, continue with the normal installation route. If it reports an earlier release, SmartGuard compatibility is not established by hide.me’s current Android TV requirements.

How do I install or update hide.me on Android TV?

Use Google Play whenever possible. It provides the normal TV build and handles updates. Sideloading is a fallback for devices where the Play Store listing is unavailable or installation fails.

Install from Google Play

  1. From the Android TV home screen, open Apps and launch Google Play Store.
  2. Search for hide.me and select the official hide.me VPN application.
  3. Choose Install. If an older copy is already installed, choose Update.
  4. After installation finishes, open the app from the same Play Store page or your Apps row.

If SmartGuard is missing after installation, first check the app version. The TV feature was added in hide.me version 6.1.0, so an older build may have VPN connectivity without the SmartGuard menu.

Sideload the official Android TV APK

Only use hide.me’s official Android TV APK. Sideloading requires Android TV to grant the utility you use permission to install unknown applications.

  1. Install Downloader from Google Play, or prepare a USB drive containing the official APK and install File Commander.
  2. When Android TV blocks the install, open the prompt’s settings and allow the specific utility—Downloader or File Commander—to install unknown apps. On some TVs the path is Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
  3. Open the utility and select the official hide.me Android TV APK.
  4. Confirm Install, wait for the package to finish, then choose Open.
  5. After the first launch, return to the unknown-app permission and disable it for the utility if you no longer need sideloading.

Android TV may reject an APK built for a different Android edition or architecture. If the package will not install, return to the Play Store route, verify that the APK is the Android TV release, and confirm that the device meets the Android 7.0 requirement.

How do I sign in and establish the VPN connection?

SmartGuard settings become useful only after the hide.me tunnel is connected. SmartGuard is not tied to a particular server, so you can connect to any hide.me location that is available to your account.

  1. Open the hide.me app on Android TV.
  2. Select Log in and enter your hide.me account credentials using the on-screen keyboard or a paired remote keyboard.
  3. On the main screen, choose a server or the app’s default connection option.
  4. Select Connect and wait until the app reports that the VPN is connected.
  5. Leave the app connected while you configure SmartGuard. If the status still says disconnected, DNS filtering will not be active.

A server change does not require a separate SmartGuard setup. Once the tunnel is active, the SmartGuard policy is available regardless of which hide.me server you selected.

Where is SmartGuard in the hide.me Android TV app?

Open Settings > SmartGuard. The page contains the filtering switches and category controls. If you cannot see SmartGuard, update the app before changing Android TV network settings; the feature was added to the TV app in version 6.1.0.

  1. With hide.me connected, move to the app’s navigation rail or menu.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select SmartGuard.
  4. Turn on the protections you want.
  5. Wait briefly for the setting to save, then return to the main screen without disconnecting the VPN.

SmartGuard works through DNS filtering. It checks requested domains against lists of known malicious websites and ad or tracker domains before the device can reach them. This is domain filtering, not a guarantee that every advertisement, script or unwanted element inside an otherwise permitted website will disappear.

How do I customize SmartGuard’s categories and exceptions?

The SmartGuard page lets you choose optional parental categories and create your own allow or block entries. Use the narrowest setting that solves your problem: a broad category can affect legitimate sites, while a custom entry targets one domain.

Enable parental categories

  1. Go to Settings > SmartGuard.
  2. Locate the optional parental controls.
  3. Enable the categories you need, such as gambling or adult content.
  4. Save or leave the page only after the controls show as enabled.

Category names and the exact switch layout can change between app releases. If a category is not shown, update the hide.me application rather than assuming that Android TV’s network settings control it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a custom allow or block entry

  1. Open Settings > SmartGuard.
  2. Choose the section for custom websites, allow entries or block entries.
  3. Enter the website domain exactly as requested by the app.
  4. Save the entry and reconnect the VPN if the app asks you to do so.

Use an allow entry when a trusted site is incorrectly blocked. Use a block entry for a domain that is not covered by the built-in lists. DNS filtering is domain-based, so adding a single domain may not affect separate domains used by the same service.

How do I keep SmartGuard active after a restart?

Because SmartGuard requires an active VPN, configure automatic reconnection. In the hide.me app, open Settings > Auto Connect and choose an action such as Enable VPN.

  1. Open hide.me and connect once manually.
  2. Go to Settings > Auto Connect.
  3. Select Enable VPN as the automatic action.
  4. Restart the TV or briefly change networks to test the behavior.
  5. After Android TV finishes starting, open hide.me and confirm that the VPN status is connected before testing a filtered domain.

Auto Connect improves continuity but does not change SmartGuard’s lists or categories. If Android TV restricts background activity for the hide.me app, the app may still need to be opened after a major system update or an aggressive power-saving event.

Do I need to change DNS on Android TV?

No. When you use the hide.me client, manual DNS changes are not required for SmartGuard. The feature applies its DNS filtering through the connected hide.me VPN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual DNS settings matter only when you are configuring a VPN connection by hand rather than using the hide.me application. hide.me gives 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 as example public DNS values, but those addresses are not SmartGuard controls and entering them does not enable SmartGuard categories, custom rules or the hide.me filtering policy.

When should you inspect DNS settings?

  • If you are using the hide.me Android TV app, first check the VPN connection and SmartGuard switches.
  • If you created a manual VPN profile, review that profile’s DNS configuration separately; the SmartGuard menu in the app is not replaced by a manual DNS address.
  • If another router, VPN or ad-blocking service is also rewriting DNS, disable the competing configuration temporarily while diagnosing the hide.me connection.

Why is SmartGuard not working?

Most failures come from one of four causes: the VPN is disconnected, the app is too old, installation permissions blocked the correct TV package, or another DNS configuration is taking precedence. Work through the checks below in order.

The SmartGuard menu is missing

  • Open the app’s information page and check for an update.
  • Install a version that includes the TV SmartGuard feature; hide.me records its addition in version 6.1.0.
  • Confirm that the device is running Android TV 7.0 or newer.
  • If the app was sideloaded, replace it with the official Android TV APK rather than a phone-only build.

The switches are visible but filtering appears inactive

  • Return to the hide.me home screen and confirm the status says Connected.
  • Reconnect the VPN, then test again. SmartGuard requires an active hide.me tunnel.
  • Check that the domain you are testing is actually covered by an enabled category or a custom block entry.
  • Temporarily remove a custom allow entry that could override the block.

Android TV refuses the APK

  • Use Google Play first.
  • If sideloading, grant install-from-unknown-apps permission to the exact utility performing the install.
  • Verify that the APK is the official Android TV package and that the device has enough storage.
  • After installation, revoke the temporary unknown-app permission if Android TV continues to block later installs unexpectedly.

The VPN disconnects after sleep or a network change

  1. Open Settings > Auto Connect in hide.me.
  2. Select Enable VPN.
  3. Reconnect manually once, then restart the TV to confirm that the setting persists.

If the TV reconnects to Wi-Fi but hide.me remains disconnected, SmartGuard cannot filter requests during that interval. The fix is to restore the tunnel, not to enter a different DNS address.

Filtering differs between websites

SmartGuard uses domain lists. A site can load while some ad, tracker or malicious domains are blocked, or a page can fail if a required domain is classified incorrectly. Add a trusted domain to the allow list only when you understand the effect, because doing so can permit requests that the default protection would block.

What exactly does SmartGuard protect against?

SmartGuard is designed to block intrusive advertising, tracking domains and known malicious websites at the DNS stage. It also offers optional parental categories, including gambling and adult-content categories, plus user-defined allow and block entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capability Documented behavior Practical implication
Advertising domains Filters listed ad domains through DNS Requests to listed domains can be stopped before connection; it is not a guarantee that every ad format disappears.
Trackers Filters listed ad and tracker domains Coverage depends on the maintained lists and the domain a website uses.
Malware Blocks known malicious websites and domains Useful as a DNS safety layer, but not a replacement for device updates or account security.
Parental categories Optional categories such as gambling and adult content Enable only the categories appropriate for your household; category classification can affect legitimate sites.
Custom rules User-added allow and block website entries Use exceptions for false positives or targeted blocking.
VPN dependency Requires an active hide.me VPN connection No filtering while the tunnel is disconnected.

There is no independent published performance statistic or third-party study establishing a block percentage or latency result for SmartGuard. Treat it as a domain-filtering feature with the documented controls, not as a measured guarantee of complete ad removal or malware prevention.

How does SmartGuard compare with another Android TV filter?

Compare products by behavior rather than by a claimed block count. The following questions expose the differences that matter on a television.

Comparison question What to verify SmartGuard’s documented position
Does it require a tunnel? Whether filtering continues when the VPN is off SmartGuard requires an active hide.me VPN connection.
Where does filtering apply? Whole VPN connection, selected apps, or only a browser The Android TV documentation describes VPN-dependent DNS filtering and does not document a separate per-app mode.
Which threats are covered? Ads, trackers, malware and parental categories SmartGuard documents all four areas, with category and list coverage determining results.
Can you override a decision? Allow-list and block-list controls Users can add their own website entries.
What platform is supported? Android TV release and minimum OS The app is designed for Android TV 7.0 and newer.
Is a paid plan required? Whether filtering is available on the account tier SmartGuard is available to Premium users.

This comparison also prevents a common mistake: judging SmartGuard as if it were a router-wide DNS service. The documented setup is inside the hide.me Android TV application and depends on that app’s VPN connection.

What are SmartGuard’s privacy and subscription implications?

hide.me states that SmartGuard stores no logs of the websites you visit and describes the feature as respecting privacy like its VPN. SmartGuard nevertheless needs the hide.me app and an active tunnel, so turning it off or disconnecting the VPN removes the feature’s filtering path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SmartGuard is a Premium-only capability. The available documentation does not establish a current price, billing interval or regional promotion, so check the account page for the terms that apply to your country instead of relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.

What is the shortest reliable setup checklist?

  1. Confirm Android TV 7.0 or newer.
  2. Install or update the official hide.me Android TV app.
  3. Sign in with a hide.me account that has Premium access.
  4. Connect to any hide.me server.
  5. Open Settings > SmartGuard.
  6. Enable ad, tracker, malicious-domain or parental protections as needed.
  7. Add custom allow or block entries only when necessary.
  8. Open Settings > Auto Connect and choose Enable VPN.
  9. After a restart or network change, confirm the VPN is connected before expecting filtering.

Following those steps gives Android TV the configuration SmartGuard is designed for without manually replacing the television’s DNS settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can SmartGuard run when the hide.me VPN is disconnected?

No. SmartGuard requires an active hide.me VPN tunnel. If the app disconnects during sleep, startup or a Wi-Fi change, DNS filtering is unavailable until the VPN reconnects.

Can I use SmartGuard with a manually created VPN profile?

The documented SmartGuard workflow is inside the hide.me Android TV app. Manual DNS values such as 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 do not turn on SmartGuard’s categories or custom rules.

Does SmartGuard block every advertisement inside an app?

No guarantee of complete in-app ad removal is documented. SmartGuard filters domains listed as advertising, tracking or malicious, so an app may still display content served from an allowed or unlisted domain.

Why might a legitimate website stop loading after I enable a category?

A required domain may match a broad parental, tracker or malicious-domain rule. Add the trusted domain to SmartGuard’s allow list, then retest; allowing it can also permit requests that the default protection would have blocked.

Is there a published SmartGuard blocking or speed score?

No independent performance statistic or third-party study is documented. Evaluate it by the categories, custom controls and VPN requirement rather than by an assumed percentage.
