To stop a compressed request from exhausting a reverse proxy, enforce limits on the decoded stream while it is being decompressed. Use route-scoped, opt-in decoding; stream output into a bounded counter; apply both a maximum decoded-body size and a maximum expansion ratio; and apply the same controls to every enabled codec, including gzip, Brotli, Zstandard, and Snappy. Treat the wire Content-Length as the size of encoded data, not as a safety limit for memory or downstream parsing.

This matters because a small body can expand by orders of magnitude. A 2026 security advisory described 150 KB of compressed data expanding to 150 MB—about 1,029 times amplification—when decoding was unbounded. The safe design aborts during decoding, before the expanded body can consume the proxy’s memory or reach an unsuspecting application.

What is a decompression-based attack, and why is Content-Length not enough?

A decompression bomb is an encoded request or response that is cheap to transmit but expensive to expand. A proxy, gateway, HTTP client, or application that automatically decodes it can allocate memory, spend CPU, or fill buffers until the process becomes slow or is terminated. The result is a denial-of-service condition rather than a data-integrity exploit.

The dangerous boundary is the decoded stream. For a request with Content-Encoding: gzip, the HTTP Content-Length normally describes the gzip bytes on the wire. Apache’s mod_deflate documentation states: “The Content-Length header reflects the length of the incoming data from the client and not the byte count of the decompressed data stream.” A 200 KB encoded body can therefore produce a decoded body many megabytes larger while still satisfying a small wire-size check.

Use two measurements for every decoded request:

  • Encoded bytes: bytes received before decompression. This controls bandwidth and connection-level buffering.
  • Decoded bytes: bytes produced by the decoder. This controls memory, parser work, and the size handed to the upstream service.

The expansion ratio is calculated as decoded bytes ÷ encoded bytes. A ratio limit catches tiny, highly amplified payloads that might remain below an absolute decoded-size limit. An absolute limit catches ordinary payloads that are large enough to exceed the route’s memory or application contract even when their ratio is modest.

The 2026 httplib2 advisory illustrates the scale of the problem: approximately 150 KB compressed data expanded to 150 MB, an amplification of about 1,029×. The affected design lacked a maximum decompressed size, streaming size tracking, and a compression-ratio check.

What controls should every reverse proxy enforce?

A robust gateway treats decompression as a controlled transformation, not as a transparent convenience. The following controls work together; omitting one leaves a distinct attack path.

Control Purpose Where to enforce it
Route-scoped opt-in Prevents unexpected endpoints from invoking a decoder. Request-routing and policy layer.
Encoded-byte limit Bounds wire transfer and pre-decode buffering. Connection or request reader.
Decoded-byte ceiling Caps the body that parsers and upstream services receive. Streaming decoder output.
Expansion-ratio ceiling Stops extreme amplification even when the absolute body limit is high. Streaming decoder, using encoded and decoded counters.
Codec parity Ensures gzip, Brotli, Zstandard, Snappy, and any future codec receive equivalent limits. Each decoder implementation and policy test.
Header normalization Prevents downstream components from trusting stale encoding or length metadata. Immediately after transformation.
Observability Shows amplification, failures, resource use, and rejected traffic. Proxy metrics, logs, and alerts.

Choose numeric thresholds from the route’s legitimate payloads, memory budget, and measured traffic. The vendor documentation cited here provides enforcement mechanisms but does not define a universal safe byte or ratio value.

How do I enable request decompression without creating an unbounded buffer?

Configure decoding only where the application needs compressed uploads or API payloads, then enforce limits while bytes are being produced. Do not first read the complete encoded body into memory and decode it afterward.

  1. Inventory routes. List every endpoint that accepts Content-Encoding. Mark whether it needs gzip, Brotli, Zstandard, or another codec. Leave decoding disabled on routes that do not require it.
  2. Reject unsupported and chained encodings. Before selecting a decoder, validate the complete Content-Encoding value. Return 415 Unsupported Media Type for an unsupported codec. Reject multiple encodings such as a gzip-then-Brotli chain unless the route explicitly implements and limits each stage.
  3. Apply an encoded-size limit. Enforce a maximum number of wire bytes before buffering or passing data to the decoder. This protects bandwidth and the input queue, but it is not a substitute for a decoded-size limit.
  4. Decode incrementally. Feed small chunks into the codec and write output to a bounded stream, parser, or temporary storage. Never append output to an unbounded in-memory string or byte array.
  5. Count decoded output. Increment a counter for every byte emitted by the decoder. Stop reading as soon as the counter exceeds the route’s decoded-body ceiling. Microsoft ASP.NET Core guidance describes the same boundary: the maximum request-body size is applied to bytes read from the decompressed stream, and further reads stop when that limit is exceeded.
  6. Check the ratio continuously. At each chunk, calculate decoded bytes divided by encoded bytes received. Abort when the configured ratio is crossed rather than waiting for end-of-stream.
  7. Map the breach to a deliberate response. A decoded-size or ratio breach should terminate the request and produce a documented client error, commonly 413 Payload Too Large. A bad or truncated compressed stream should produce a decoding error, commonly 400 Bad Request. Do not forward partial decoded data to the upstream application.
  8. Normalize metadata. Remove or rewrite Content-Encoding after decoding. Remove the encoded Content-Length; set a new length only when the complete decoded length is known. Otherwise use streaming transfer semantics and make sure downstream code does not rely on the old value.

Envoy’s decompressor follows this metadata rule by removing content-length when decompression occurs and exposing compressed and uncompressed byte statistics. Apache requires an explicit input filter for gzip request bodies, so enabling response compression alone does not safely implement request decoding.

How should I choose decoded-size and ratio limits?

Start with the largest legitimate decoded payload for each route, add operational headroom, and keep a lower global ceiling as a last-resort memory guard. A file-upload endpoint, a JSON API, and a webhook should not inherit the same limit merely because they share a listener.

Set the decoded-body ceiling from downstream reality

Include the parser’s working memory, validation copies, and any fan-out to other services when estimating a route’s budget. If an endpoint normally accepts a 2 MB JSON document, a limit of several tens of megabytes may be unnecessary and increases the blast radius of malformed input. If an endpoint legitimately accepts large archives, place it on an isolated route or service with a separately sized budget.

Set the ratio ceiling from observed traffic

Measure the ratio for normal clients and codecs, then choose a limit that leaves room for legitimate compression without permitting extreme amplification. A ratio is not a replacement for the absolute ceiling: a 20× ratio on a 100 MB encoded upload could still produce a 2 GB decoded body.

Keep both checks active during streaming

Evaluate limits after every output chunk. Checking only at end-of-stream permits the decoder to allocate the entire expanded body first. Checking only a declared header value is ineffective because encoded and decoded lengths are different quantities.

Document scope and units

Record whether a limit is per request, per connection, per route, or global; whether decimal or binary units are used; and whether it applies before or after any multipart or transfer decoding. Include the policy in configuration tests so a future codec cannot silently bypass it.

How do common proxies and gateways handle decompression limits?

Implementations differ substantially. The table separates documented capabilities from controls that are not stated in the cited product material.

Implementation Request decompression Codecs and response controls Decoded-size or ratio behavior Header and telemetry behavior
NGINX Its documented gzip and gunzip features concern response handling; they do not by themselves provide a decompressed request-body quota. gzip on, gzip_types, and gzip_min_length control response compression. gunzip can expand stored gzip responses for clients that do not accept gzip. Enforce request decoded-size limits in the application or an upstream gateway with bounded decoding. Request-limit and decoded-byte telemetry must come from the layer performing request decompression.
Envoy Proxy The decompressor can be enabled independently for requests and responses. Supports gzip and Brotli in the decompressor filter. Configure a bounded streaming decoder externally or through the deployment’s request-body policy; verify that the policy applies to every enabled direction. Removes content-length after decompression and exposes decompressed/not-decompressed counters plus compressed and uncompressed byte totals.
Envoy Gateway Request decompression behavior depends on the Envoy policy used for the route. BackendTrafficPolicy supports Brotli, Gzip, and Zstd response compression. The documented minContentLength minimum is 30 bytes. The cited documentation does not prescribe a universal decoded request ceiling or ratio. Use Envoy statistics and route logs to confirm transformed byte counts.
Cloudflare Edge transformations can decompress and recompress when origin and visitor encodings differ; route rules can disable or order codecs. Response compression supports Brotli, Gzip, and Zstandard. Documented minimum response sizes are 48 bytes for Gzip and 50 bytes for Brotli and Zstandard. Set separate upstream protections for decompressed request bodies; edge compression settings do not establish an application payload quota. Keep origin and edge policies consistent; Cache-Control: no-transform can prevent transformations in supported cases.
Amazon API Gateway Can decompress compressed method request payloads before applying mapping templates. Response compression uses minimumCompressionSize, an integer from 0 through 10,485,760 bytes (10 MiB). Retain an independent decoded-request limit at the route or upstream service. Verify that logs distinguish encoded request size from the post-decompression payload size.
Apache mod_deflate Can be inserted as an input filter to decompress gzip request bodies. Also provides response compression. Downstream code must count decoded bytes itself or use a server limit explicitly applied after decompression. The incoming Content-Length remains the encoded client length, so it cannot represent the decoded stream.

HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 must be covered by the same policy. Test both protocols because a limit attached only to one request path, listener, or buffering implementation can leave another path unprotected.

What did the gzip, Brotli, Zstandard, and Snappy advisories reveal?

Codec coverage must be tested independently. A 2026 Netty advisory documented a bypass in which a maxAllocation safeguard protected gzip and deflate but was ignored for Brotli, Zstandard, and Snappy. The lesson is operational: adding a codec is a security change, not a format-only change.

  • Exercise malformed headers, truncated streams, dictionary features, and unusually large decoder windows.
  • Review release notes and security advisories before enabling a new codec.

The 2026 httplib2 advisory similarly identifies unbounded response decoding as dangerous for clients as well as gateways. Any component that automatically expands attacker-controlled content needs streaming output accounting, a maximum decoded size, and a ratio check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should response compression be configured?

Response compression is a separate resource-control problem. It can consume CPU, alter cache keys, and trigger transformations between an origin and a visitor. Compress only responses for which the bandwidth saving justifies that work.

Use a minimum response size

Set a minimum-size threshold so tiny responses are not compressed unnecessarily. Envoy Gateway documents a minimum minContentLength of 30 bytes. Cloudflare documents minimums of 48 bytes for Gzip and 50 bytes for Brotli and Zstandard. Amazon API Gateway permits minimumCompressionSize from 0 through 10,485,760 bytes (10 MiB); choose a route-appropriate value rather than assuming the maximum is desirable.

Skip data that is already compressed

Exclude formats such as JPEG, PNG, many video containers, and compressed archives unless measurements show a benefit. Recompressing them wastes CPU and can increase latency without reducing transfer size.

Keep negotiation and caching correct

When the selected representation depends on Accept-Encoding, send Vary: Accept-Encoding so caches do not serve a Brotli response to a client that cannot decode it. Dynamic transformations may require decompression and recompression; Cache-Control: no-transform can prevent transformations where the platform honors it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect sensitive or expensive paths

Use route rules to disable compression for responses containing data that must not be transformed, or for CPU-heavy endpoints during overload. Ensure edge and origin policies agree about whether a response may be transformed, stored, or passed through unchanged.

How do I normalize headers after a gateway transforms a body?

Header errors can turn a correctly bounded decoder into a downstream parsing problem. After request decompression, remove Content-Encoding unless another encoding remains. Remove the original encoded Content-Length; it describes bytes that no longer exist in the forwarded representation.

If the gateway has fully buffered the decoded body and knows its exact length, it may set a new Content-Length. A streaming gateway should instead use streaming transfer semantics and ensure the upstream framework reads until the transformed stream ends. Apply the same discipline to response transformations, and add Vary: Accept-Encoding whenever negotiation changes the representation.

How can I test the limits before production?

Use benign fixtures that exercise the boundaries without relying on a live attack. Test each route, codec, protocol, and transformation direction.

  1. Send an uncompressed body exactly at the decoded-size limit and one byte over it.
  2. Send compressed bodies whose decoded output reaches the ratio limit at different encoded sizes.
  3. Send a tiny, highly compressible fixture to verify that the decoder aborts during streaming rather than after full expansion.
  4. Try unsupported and chained Content-Encoding values and confirm a clean 415 response with no decoder invocation.
  5. Truncate and corrupt each codec stream; verify a 400-class response and no partial upstream request.
  6. Repeat the tests over HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2, through every listener and route variant.
  7. Check that transformed headers contain no stale encoded length or encoding declaration.
  8. Load-test boundary cases while watching memory, CPU, latency, queue depth, and 413/415 rates.

Run these tests after proxy upgrades and whenever a codec, decompressor library, buffering mode, or HTTP/2 implementation changes.

What are the most common configuration mistakes?

Relying on wire Content-Length

Symptom: very small requests produce unexpectedly large decoded bodies. Fix: enforce the limit on bytes emitted by the decoder and keep encoded and decoded counters separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buffering before checking

Symptom: memory spikes occur before a request is rejected. Fix: stream decoder output into a bounded sink and abort as soon as a ceiling is crossed.

Compressing every response

Symptom: CPU rises while response sizes barely change. Fix: set a minimum size, exclude already-compressed media, and disable compression on expensive paths when necessary.

What is a practical deployment checklist?

  • Inventory every route accepting Content-Encoding.
  • Reject unsupported and chained encodings unless explicitly required.
  • Set per-route decoded-byte ceilings and a global safety ceiling.
  • Set an expansion-ratio ceiling and abort during streaming decode.
  • Verify equivalent limits for gzip, Brotli, Zstandard, Snappy, and custom codecs.
  • Keep compressed and decompressed lengths in separate telemetry fields.
  • Normalize Content-Encoding, Content-Length, and Vary after transformations.
  • Set response-compression minimums and exclude already-compressed media.
  • Load-test boundary fixtures while monitoring memory, CPU, latency, and 413/415 responses.
  • Review proxy and decompressor release notes and advisories before enabling new codecs.

The security boundary is the decoded stream. A gateway is protected only when it can prove, for every accepted codec and route, that expansion is counted, bounded, observable, and stopped before memory or downstream limits are exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I safely accept gzip request bodies if I set a large Content-Length limit?

No. Content-Length normally measures the encoded bytes, so a large enough expansion can still overwhelm the decoder or application. Accept gzip only with streaming decoded-byte and expansion-ratio checks, plus a route-specific limit.

Should a decompression limit be global or per endpoint?

Use both: a per-endpoint ceiling that matches the endpoint’s payload contract and a lower global safety ceiling for unexpected paths. A single generous limit gives small API routes the same blast radius as legitimate large-upload routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What status code should a gateway return when decompression expands beyond the limit?

Use a documented 413 Payload Too Large response for a decoded-size or ratio breach, and a 400-class response for malformed or truncated compressed data. The gateway should stop decoding and forward no partial body.

Does response compression create the same decompression-bomb risk?

Response compression mainly creates CPU, caching, and transformation concerns for the sender, while decompression of attacker-controlled content creates the expansion risk. If a gateway decompresses responses or recompresses between hops, apply the same bounded-stream principles to that transformation path.
