Compare Watch time (hours) for the same date range and at the same reporting level in YouTube Analytics. Choose the Live, On demand, or Live and on-demand filter to match what you want to measure. A stream running for 24 hours does not automatically earn 24 hours of watch time: the metric records how long viewers actually watched.
Compare the right reports in YouTube Studio
- Choose the level of comparison. Open Analytics for each video to compare a specific stream with a specific regular video. To compare channel totals, use channel-level Advanced Mode instead; do not compare a video-level figure with a channel-level total. YouTube Analytics supports specific comparisons and data exports through Advanced Mode. See YouTube’s Analytics guidance.
- Set the same date range. Use identical start and end dates for both reports. This matters especially if one video or stream was published earlier, or if a broadcast continued across multiple dates.
- Apply the same content-type filter. Select Live, On demand, or Live and on-demand, depending on the report and the question. For a stream that also has an archive, decide whether you mean viewing during the live event, playback of the archived video, or both. Use the appropriate filter consistently.
- Compare Watch time (hours). Treat this as the primary measure of accumulated viewing. Record views and average view duration as separate context, not substitutes.
- For monetization, check Earn separately. General Analytics watch time is not the same as valid public watch hours used for YouTube Partner Program thresholds.
What each metric tells you
| Metric | What it answers | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Watch time (hours) | Total time viewers watched the video. YouTube defines it as “The amount of time viewers have watched your video.” | Use this for the direct comparison of accumulated viewing. YouTube’s video reach guidance. |
| Views | Counted view starts under YouTube’s rules; a view does not represent a fixed amount of watch time. | Use to understand how often viewing began, not how long people watched. |
| Average view duration or average watch time | Average minutes watched per view or playback, as named in the relevant report. | Use to assess typical viewing-session depth, alongside total watch time. Definitions and report context are in YouTube’s engagement guidance. |
| Concurrent viewers or peak concurrent viewers | How many viewers watched simultaneously, or the highest simultaneous audience during a live stream. | Use to describe live audience size at a moment or peak; it is not accumulated viewing time. See YouTube’s live metrics guidance. |
Why live dashboard numbers can differ from Analytics
The Live Control Room supplies real-time measures, while Analytics is based on video ID and processes and despams data. YouTube says Analytics measures different information from the Live Control Room, so differences between the reports do not by themselves establish that one is erroneous. For a like-for-like comparison, use the appropriate Analytics reporting level, date range, and content-type filter rather than mixing a live dashboard snapshot with processed Analytics totals. YouTube’s live metrics documentation describes the distinction.
Check whether the 24/7 stream has a complete archive
Do not assume that a continuous stream will be available as a complete video afterward. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Its warning is explicit: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” See Archive live streams.
If you are comparing live viewing with later replay performance, first verify that the archive exists and determine which reporting filter represents the activity you intend to compare. Missing or incomplete archive footage can limit what you can assess about later on-demand viewing.

Do not confuse general watch time with monetization eligibility
If your question is whether viewing advances a YouTube Partner Program threshold, consult the Earn area’s valid public watch hours, not just the Watch time (hours) metric in general Analytics. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance retrieved in 2026 lists one route as 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months; a separate Shorts route is 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. These are published thresholds, not a promise of acceptance: policy review also applies, and YouTube may change requirements. Check the current Earn page and YouTube Partner Programme overview and eligibility.
For the public watch-hour thresholds, live streams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count. General Analytics watch time and valid public watch hours therefore answer different questions. The eligibility guidance explains the qualifying categories.
