Quick-commerce orders are often dearer than buying the same basket in a nearby shop, but the gap depends on item markups, delivery and service fees, pack sizes, promotions, membership and substitutions. The only reliable way to find the cheapest option for your address is to price one fixed basket at the physical shop, the retailer’s own delivery service and each relevant rapid-delivery app, then compare the final checkout totals and normalised unit prices under identical conditions. Record the date, postcode, delivery slot, account membership and every fee so the result can be repeated rather than guessed from an advertised discount.
Is quick commerce more expensive than going to the shop?
Usually, yes, when all mandatory charges are included, although a promotion, a membership benefit or a cheaper nearby store can reverse the result for a particular order. Item prices may already be higher online, and delivery, service, convenience, bag, small-order and tip charges can widen the difference.
Do not treat a search result or a headline discount as the answer. Compare the same products, quantities and delivery conditions, and use the checkout total that you would actually pay. Keep the shop price as the baseline:

Also calculate unit prices. A 400 g pack and a 500 g pack are not comparable merely because both are labelled “one pack.”
How do I build a basket that can be compared?
Start with a repeatable list of products you genuinely buy. A fixed basket prevents a cheap-looking order from being created by quietly switching brands, pack sizes or quantities.
Record the product identity
- Brand and exact product name.
- Variant, such as full-fat milk, a particular roast, flavour or dietary formulation.
- Pack size or weight and the number of packs.
- Quantity required for the order.
- Any quality requirement, such as loose fruit versus pre-packed fruit.
Include a mixture of staples, branded goods and fresh items if those are typical for you. If you normally accept a store-brand substitute, write that rule beside the item; otherwise compare like-for-like first and assess substitutions separately.
Freeze the comparison conditions
Use the same delivery address or the same physical branch catchment, the same day and an equivalent delivery slot. Sign in or sign out consistently so one service does not receive a member price while another is priced as a guest. Note whether a coupon, loyalty price or free-delivery threshold is available to that account.
Separate the core basket from extras
Keep optional impulse purchases out of the comparison. If you need a tip, reusable bags or a rush slot, record those as separate selected costs so you can see both the unavoidable total and the total for your preferred service level.
How should I record prices fairly?
Take a time-stamped screenshot or spreadsheet entry for every item and the checkout page. Online prices can change by postcode, seller and time, so an unrecorded number cannot be audited later.

- Choose the baseline shop. Record shelf prices at a nearby physical branch, including any loyalty-card price that you could obtain under the same conditions. If the product is unavailable, mark it unavailable rather than replacing it silently.
- Price the retailer’s own delivery service. Use the retailer’s site or app at the chosen address and slot. Capture the item subtotal before fees.
- Price each third-party rapid-delivery app. Search for the exact brand, variant and pack size. Select the same quantity and delivery speed wherever the service allows.
- Capture the full checkout. Record item subtotal, discounts, delivery, service or convenience fee, bag or packing fee, minimum-order charge, tax and tip. A fee that appears only at the last screen still belongs in the comparison.
- Save promotion conditions. Write down the code, expiry, minimum spend, eligible products, membership requirement and whether it is limited to a first order. Do not assume a banner applies until the checkout total changes.
- Log availability outcomes. Mark each item as available, substituted, refunded or unavailable. Note the replacement and its size or price.
- Calculate both totals. Compare the delivered basket total and the item-only total after normalising units. The first answers “what will this order cost?”; the second shows where an online markup is occurring.
What fees and charges belong in the comparison?
Include every mandatory charge and any cost you deliberately select. Showing fees line by line explains why two services with similar item prices can finish far apart.

A useful worksheet has separate columns for item subtotal, each fee, discount, tax, tip and final total. This prevents a “free delivery” label from hiding a higher service fee or item markup.
How do I compare different pack sizes?
Convert each comparable product to a common unit before deciding which listing is cheaper. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says, “Unit prices help consumers compare prices and find the best value for money.”
Unit price = pack price ÷ pack quantity × chosen reference quantity. Choose 100 g, 1 kg, 100 ml, 1 litre or one item according to the product. For example, a A$3.60 400 g pack costs A$0.90 per 100 g; a A$4.20 500 g pack costs A$0.84 per 100 g, so the larger pack is cheaper per weight even though its shelf price is higher.
Apply the same calculation to multi-packs and promotional bundles. A two-for-one offer should be divided by the number of usable units only if you will actually use both; otherwise its apparent unit price is misleading. For fresh produce, record whether the comparison uses a priced weight, an average item count or a variable-weight adjustment.

Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission advises that comparisons should use goods “accepted to be similar or equivalent by consumers or trade norms.” That means a branded 500 g product should not be replaced in the calculation by a 1 kg own-label product simply because it lowers the average.

What do published basket checks show?
Independent snapshots illustrate the size of the gap, but they are not universal price lists. The Australian examples below were reported by CHOICE in 2025 under its test conditions; your postcode, promotions, membership and stock can produce a different result.

Which? reported in 2025 that rapid-delivery grocery baskets were at least 20% more expensive on average in its snapshot, with some individual products costing more than twice supermarket prices. Its percentage comparison excluded delivery charges, so the amount paid at checkout can be higher still.
These results come from investigations in Australia and the UK, not a guarantee for every country. An academic study by Aparicio, Metzman and Rigobon (2024), using US online-grocery data, found that online prices vary more than offline prices over time, by delivery ZIP code and across sellers. Treat the figures as evidence that you should measure your own basket, not as a permanent ranking.

Record the price you can legitimately obtain today, then show the underlying price so a temporary deal does not masquerade as a structural advantage.
Promotions and coupons
Apply a promotion only when your basket meets its conditions. Record whether the discount is a percentage, a fixed amount, a multi-buy, a first-order offer or a credit that will be awarded later. If a code cannot be used on all channels, keep the channels’ totals separate rather than spreading the saving across products.
Memberships
A delivery membership can make frequent orders cheaper but may be poor value for occasional use. Allocate the recurring fee to the orders you expect during the billing period:

Membership cost per order = membership fee ÷ expected qualifying orders.
Add that allocated amount to each member order, and calculate a second scenario for your actual order count. Include free-delivery thresholds and excluded stores in the assumptions; otherwise a nominally free delivery benefit is overstated.
Substitutions and refunds
Log the originally requested item and the item actually supplied. A higher-priced substitution can increase the final charge; a refund can lower it while leaving you without the product. For a pre-order comparison, report an “as requested” total and an “as fulfilled” total after delivery.
How do delivery speed and stock change the value?
The cheapest basket is not automatically the best choice if it arrives too late, lacks essential products or requires replacements you would reject. Add service performance to the price sheet without converting it into an invented dollar value.
- Speed: record the promised window and actual arrival time.
- Reliability: note late, cancelled or split deliveries.
- Minimum order: record the spend needed to avoid a surcharge.
- Range: count missing products and unavailable pack sizes.
- Freshness: record short dates, damaged packaging or poor produce separately from price.
- Substitution control: note whether you can reject replacements or set “refund only.”
For an urgent order, you may rationally pay a premium for a 30-minute window. For a weekly stock-up, a slower slot with a lower fee may be better. State the priority before comparing so convenience does not get mistaken for a hidden saving.
How often should I repeat the check?
Repeat the same basket periodically, especially when you change postcode, membership, delivery time or preferred store. Aparicio, Metzman and Rigobon’s 2024 findings on greater online price dispersion mean one evening’s result can age quickly.

A practical schedule is monthly for a regular grocery order and whenever a membership renews or a major promotion ends. Keep the basket definition unchanged for trend tracking; create a second “current needs” basket when your household’s products change. Record date, time, postcode, app version if shown, account state, slot, weather or surge notice, item availability and final total.
What are the most common comparison mistakes?
- Comparing different products: a different brand, flavour or pack size invalidates the item comparison.
- Using a search-page price: fees and taxes often appear only after entering the address and slot.
- Ignoring the small-order charge: a low item subtotal can trigger a large fixed fee.
- Counting a future credit as cash today: separate immediate savings from rewards that require another order.
- Mixing member and non-member prices: either price every option under your current status or show member economics as a separate scenario.
- Spreading a basket-level coupon incorrectly: show the coupon at basket level unless the service explicitly assigns item discounts.
- Replacing unavailable goods without a note: substitutions change both price and usefulness.
- Comparing different delivery windows: rush and scheduled slots can carry different charges.
- Assuming one app is always cheapest: prices vary by seller, postcode and time, so rankings can change from one order to the next.
How do I decide which option is cheapest for this order?
Use a two-stage decision: first eliminate options that fail your product or timing requirements, then compare the remaining landed totals and unit prices.
- Set hard requirements. Keep only options that can supply essential items, meet your delivery window and stay above or below any order minimum you accept.
- Compare landed totals. Add every mandatory fee, your normal tip scenario and the allocated membership cost if you are measuring recurring use.
- Check unit prices. Identify whether the lowest total is achieved by smaller packs, lower-quality substitutes or a genuinely better price.
- Review fulfilment risk. Use your availability and substitution notes to choose between a slightly cheaper but unreliable basket and a dependable one.
- Save the result. Keep the screenshots and assumptions so the next check measures a real change rather than a different basket.
For a one-off urgent order, the winner is the option with the lowest acceptable total at the required speed. For routine shopping, calculate the average delivered cost over several orders, including memberships and occasional refunds, before deciding which service is cheapest for your household.

Yes, but it is a basket-specific outcome rather than a general rule. A targeted coupon, a member’s waived delivery fee, a nearby dark-store promotion or a shop with unusually high local prices can produce a lower final total. Verify the saving against the physical-shop baseline and unit prices, and check whether the deal is repeatable after its expiry.

Should loyalty points, cashback or store credit reduce the grocery total?
Count only value that you can use under the same order conditions. Show the immediate amount charged first, then a separate line for points or credit earned; this prevents future, conditional rewards from making today’s basket look cheaper.
How can I compare a retailer’s app with a third-party delivery app when the catalogues differ?
Create a matched core basket containing only products listed in both services, then report missing products separately. A second, service-specific basket can show range, but it should not be presented as a like-for-like price comparison.
What spreadsheet columns make repeated price checks easiest?
Use date and time, postcode, channel, membership status, product identifier, pack quantity, item price, discount, each fee, tip, substitution result and final total. Add calculated unit price and premium percentage columns so a new check requires entering observations rather than rebuilding formulas.

Record the fee and the condition displayed at checkout, such as a surge or weather notice. Keep that observation in the time series and run a second comparison at a normal slot if you want to measure the service’s usual cost.
