Compare the exact phone model and regional variant across four separate questions: how long it gets operating-system, security, and feature updates; when that support period starts and how updates reach your device; how practically you can replace its battery, screen, and other parts; and how its battery and body are expected to hold up. A long software promise is not enough on its own: a worn battery or hard-to-replace display can end a phone’s useful life first.
What should you compare before buying a phone for long-term use?
Use the same checklist for every candidate, and record the answers against the exact model number, region, and carrier variant you intend to buy. Marketing phrases such as “long-term support” or “repairable design” are not comparable unless you know what each covers and how it works in practice.
- Software coverage: record operating-system upgrades, security updates, and feature updates separately.
- Support dates and delivery: identify when the support clock starts, its promised end date, and whether rollout timing depends on your carrier or region.
- Repair route: check whether batteries, displays, and other critical parts are sold, who may buy them, what tools and instructions are available, and how quickly parts can arrive.
- Physical and battery durability: compare charge-cycle information and the phone’s drop, scratch, dust, and water resistance.
- Ownership terms: check the warranty and any commercial guarantee for the exact sale, not just a headline support policy.
Keep evidence with your comparison: save the manufacturer’s support page and repair documentation, and, for eligible phones sold in the EU from 20 June 2025, save the product energy label and its European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) entry. Policies and stock can change, so check the current model-specific information before paying, especially for older stock or a used phone.

How many years of phone updates will you get?
There is no single update number that answers this question. Separate the update types, then compare the support clock and its dates for the exact phone.

Separate operating-system, security, and feature updates
An operating-system upgrade moves the phone to a newer major Android version. A security update addresses security issues, while a feature update may add functions without being a major OS upgrade. A manufacturer may include all three in one promise, but do not assume one category automatically guarantees the others.
Google’s 2023 announcement and current support documentation say Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of OS and security updates; the policy also includes Feature Drops. The support period begins when the device first became available on the US Google Store. That start-date detail matters if you are considering a phone well after launch: the remaining support is not necessarily seven years from your purchase date.
Fairphone’s current support roadmap for Fairphone 5 lists at least five Android-version upgrades and at least eight years of security updates. Its stated security-update cadence is monthly for about three years, then every two months from August 2026 through the end of support in August 2031. A long end date therefore does not mean the update frequency stays constant throughout the period.
Compare the dates and terms, not just the biggest number
| Comparison point | Google Pixel 8 and later | Fairphone 5 | EU baseline for covered models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating-system coverage | Seven years of OS updates, from first availability on the US Google Store, according to Google’s support policy. | At least five Android-version upgrades, according to Fairphone’s current support roadmap. | At least five years of operating-system updates after the last unit is placed on the EU market when the manufacturer provides security, corrective, or functionality updates, under European Commission rules in force in 2025. |
| Security-update coverage | Seven years, from first availability on the US Google Store, according to Google’s support policy. | At least eight years, with monthly updates for about three years and then updates every two months from August 2026 to August 2031, according to Fairphone’s current roadmap. | The 2025 rules establish an OS-update baseline and parts requirements for covered products; do not treat that OS figure as a universal security-update promise for every phone. |
| Feature updates | Google includes Feature Drops in its stated seven-year Pixel 8 policy. | Not stated in Fairphone’s current support roadmap as a separate feature-update commitment. | Not stated as a separate feature-update duration in the European Commission’s 2025 baseline. |
| Support clock | Starts when the device first became available on the US Google Store. | Not stated here as a comparable start-date rule in Fairphone’s current roadmap. | The OS-update period is measured after the last unit is placed on the EU market. |
The table illustrates why “years of support” can conceal important differences: the policy may start from a sale or availability date rather than your purchase, different update types can have different commitments, and update cadence can change. The EU baseline applies only to covered models and is not a promise that every manufacturer will deliver updates quickly or add every new feature.

Does the update promise apply where you live?
Check the support policy and update availability for your country and carrier, rather than assuming a global product name guarantees identical delivery. Google says updates may roll out gradually and can depend on the carrier and device.
Before buying a new phone, open the manufacturer’s model-specific support page and look for the security-update end date, supported OS versions, and any regional qualifications. For older inventory or a used phone, also check the currently installed security-patch level. A phone can have a multi-year policy on paper but already have used part of its support period while sitting in storage.
- Match the variant: verify the precise model and carrier version, not only the family name printed in a listing.
- Confirm the support clock: establish the policy’s start point and calculate the time remaining from today.
- Check current status: confirm that the model is still within its stated support period and note its current security-patch level.
- Allow for rollout timing: a published update date may not mean the update arrives on every device at once.
How do you check whether a phone is repairable?
Look beyond whether a repair is theoretically possible. A useful comparison asks which parts are available, who can obtain and replace them, what information and tools the job requires, and how long the repair could keep the phone out of service.
Check the parts and the repair route
Start with the battery and display because damage or wear to either can make an otherwise supported phone difficult to keep using. Then check whether charging components and other likely failure parts are available. For each part, find out whether the manufacturer or seller offers it directly, whether it is restricted to professional repairers, and whether a local repair option exists for your region.

Availability is not the same as accessibility. A battery may be listed but require professional service; a repair may be allowed for an owner but require specialized tools or a difficult disassembly. Check manuals and software requirements as well as the part listing. Record fastener type, tools, disassembly steps, and whether the repair requires software or calibration after installation. The evidence does not establish a universal repair price or repair time, so get a quote for your particular model and location rather than inferring one from a repairability label.
Use the EU label and EPREL record when available
For a phone sold in the EU after 20 June 2025, save its energy label and open the associated EPREL record. The record provides model-level information to compare repair logistics, including repairability class and index, disassembly depth, fastener and tool scores, spare-parts score, repair-information score, minimum update duration, and commercial guarantee.
Read the fields together. A strong spare-parts score does not by itself tell you whether a part is sold to end users or only to professional repairers. A repair-information score does not show that a nearby shop has the part in stock. Use the record to identify what to verify with the manufacturer, seller, or repairer.
Understand the EU spare-parts rules
European Commission rules effective in 2025 require key spare parts for covered models to remain available for seven years after the end of sales, with delivery within five to ten working days. Check which parts are covered, when the end-of-sales period applies, and whether the part you need is restricted to professional repairers. The delivery window is a stated requirement for covered parts, not a guarantee that a local technician can complete a repair within that time.

What do battery-cycle and durability ratings tell you?
Battery-cycle information helps you compare a regulated minimum for eligible EU models; it is not a prediction of exactly how long your particular battery will last. A phone’s real useful life also depends on how it is used, stored, charged, and repaired.
Under the European Commission’s 2025 rules for covered EU models, batteries must retain at least 80% of their initial capacity after 800 charge cycles. Treat this as a product requirement for covered models, not a promise that every user will see the same capacity or service life. Compare it with the practical battery replacement route: even a battery that meets the criterion will eventually wear, and a hard-to-source or professional-only replacement can affect ownership costs and downtime.
The EU label also provides information on drop, scratch, dust, and water resistance for covered models. These indicators help distinguish physical durability from software longevity. They do not establish that a phone is immune to damage, and they cannot tell you the condition of a used phone or whether it has already been repaired.

How should you compare two phones side by side?
Use a worksheet with one column per exact candidate. Fill it from official model-specific documents and the EU label where applicable; mark information that is unavailable as “not stated” and name the source you checked rather than guessing.

Choose according to the risk you want to reduce
- If you keep phones until updates end: prioritize the remaining support period, not merely the original promise. A new-in-box older phone may have less time left than its purchase date suggests.
- If battery wear is your main concern: prioritize clear battery-part availability and a replacement route you can use, alongside cycle information.
- If accidental damage is likely: consider display availability, repair instructions, local service, and drop information together.
- If you need the newest software features: confirm that feature updates are explicitly covered; a security-update promise alone does not establish feature parity.
- If you buy in the EU: check whether the exact model is covered by the post-20 June 2025 label and spare-parts rules, then use its EPREL record rather than extrapolating from another model.
There is no universal winner from support years alone. A phone with a longer software term may still be expensive or difficult to repair; a highly repairable phone may not offer the high-end features you want. Make the trade-off explicit: compare how long the phone can remain secure and current with how realistically you can keep its hardware working.
What should you verify for iPhone or Samsung models?
Do not assign one fixed support duration to an entire brand when the available evidence does not establish a universal, model-independent promise. For an iPhone, check Apple’s documentation for the exact model’s compatibility and security releases; for a Samsung phone, use its model-specific official support information before recording a number.
Apply the same worksheet regardless of brand: distinguish OS compatibility from security releases, confirm the relevant dates and region, and inspect repair parts and documentation for the exact model. If an official page does not state a comparable duration or start date, record it as not stated rather than turning an assumption into a guarantee.

Can I keep using a phone after its security updates stop?
It may still function, but newly discovered vulnerabilities may no longer be addressed through the phone’s operating-system updates. The risk depends on how you use it and what protections remain available, so avoid treating continued operation as equivalent to continued security support.
Do carrier-locked phones get updates later than unlocked phones?
There is no universal delay established for every carrier or model. Because update delivery can depend on carrier and device, check the support information for the exact variant and ask the carrier about its rollout process.
Does buying a used phone restart its update-support period?
No support-clock reset is established by the policies described here; the cited examples tie support to a defined availability or market event. Check the model’s original support start and end dates, then compare them with the phone’s current patch level before buying used.
Does a repairability score mean I can replace the battery myself?
Not by itself. Check whether the battery is sold to end users, what tools and disassembly steps are required, and whether the repair documentation or software is restricted to professional technicians.
