Use results from the same test publisher and version, then check how the phone performs in the activities you actually do, such as browsing, video, calls, or gaming. Test hours are useful for comparing phones under controlled conditions, but they are not a promise of how long your own phone will last.
Why battery capacity alone does not tell you runtime
Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe rated battery capacity, not how many hours a phone will run. Runtime also depends on the complete device and how it is used, so a larger capacity figure alone cannot establish which of two phones lasts longer.
An EU product sheet illustrates the distinction: Samsung’s information sheet for model SM-S936B/DS lists 43 hours of battery endurance per cycle and a separate rated capacity of 4,755 mAh. These are different specifications, not two ways of expressing the same result. The sheet is issued under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669 and was accessed October 4, 2026: Samsung EU product information sheet.
How to compare two phones fairly
- Find measured runtime. Look for a published, repeatable battery test that reports hours, rather than treating capacity as a runtime estimate.
- Match the test publisher and version. Scores from different methods—or different versions of one method—may not measure the same thing.
- Check activity-specific results. Compare calls, web browsing, video, and gaming with your own routine. A combined score can hide a weak result in the activity that matters most to you.
- Read the test setup. Note brightness, refresh-rate settings, network conditions, and workload; these affect both the measurement and how well it reflects your use.
- Check the exact model variant and test date. Ensure the result applies to the regional or hardware variant you are considering, and avoid treating a dated score as a permanent ranking.
- Use official product disclosures as a separate cross-check. A product sheet’s endurance and capacity figures add useful context, but do not combine its endurance number with a lab result from a different protocol as though they were measured the same way.
Read the activity results, not only the headline score
GSMArena’s Battery Life Test 2.0 reports runtimes for calls, web browsing, video streaming, and gaming, then combines them into an Active Use Score. Its balanced mix gives slightly more weight to web and video. That means the score is a useful summary, but your own priorities may differ: someone who streams video heavily should inspect video runtime, while a frequent gamer should look closely at gaming results.

For a dated example, GSMArena’s buyer guide, last updated May 3, 2026, reported a OnePlus 15 Active Use Score of 23:07 hours, with separate results of 39:12 hours for calls, 21:48 for web, 32:57 for video, and 13:05 for gaming. Make sure the scores are actually comparable
A score’s meaning depends on its protocol. GSMArena says its older Endurance rating cannot be compared with its Battery Life Test 2.0 Active Use Score: the old schedule included standby power draw, while the newer score assumes active use and omits standby. For Battery Life Test 2.0, GSMArena’s stated screen-on setup uses 200 nits, location enabled, airplane mode with Bluetooth off, Wi-Fi connected, and volume at 15%. Web browsing uses the phone’s default Auto or High refresh setting, preferring variable refresh where available. The controlled setup helps make the publisher’s comparisons consistent, but it will not represent every use case—for example, outdoor high-brightness use or mobile-data reception.
Refresh rate matters particularly for demanding games. GSMArena warns that high-refresh-rate gaming can produce runtimes up to 50% shorter than its 60 Hz gaming test. That is a method-specific warning, not a universal penalty for every phone or game session. If you play at a high frame rate, prioritize results that resemble that use rather than relying on a 60 Hz test alone.

Use a comparison checklist when choosing

Why your results may differ from a test
Lab tests use controlled settings to make comparisons more repeatable, but real use changes. Network reception, background processes, ambient temperature, ambient light, screen brightness, and the apps you use can all affect runtime. A 200-nit, Wi-Fi-connected screen-on test is therefore best read as comparative evidence under stated conditions—not as a prediction of your personal screen-on time or days between charges.
When two phones look close, give more weight to the test conditions and activity results that resemble your routine. If one result is substantially better only in an activity you rarely use, that difference may matter less to you than a weaker result in your everyday workload.
