Compare OpenAI and Anthropic API costs by modeling your actual workload, not by choosing the lower headline rate. Keep request volume, input and output tokens, model and context tier, processing mode, geography, cache behavior, tool calls, retries, and billing period constant. Then calculate both the monthly bill and the effective cost per successful task. This approach exposes cases where a model with a higher per-token price is cheaper overall because it needs fewer retries, uses more cache hits, or handles more work in batch mode.
Anthropic’s published list prices are effective May 27, 2026. For Claude Sonnet 4.6, standard global processing is $3.00 per million input tokens and $15.00 per million output tokens; global batch processing is $1.50 and $7.50 respectively. OpenAI publishes separate rates for input, output, cached input, cache writes, and processing-mode tiers. Treat every figure as time- and scope-sensitive, and recheck both providers’ current pricing before committing to a design.
What is the right way to compare the two APIs?
Build a provider-neutral cost model first, then insert each provider’s current prices. A fair comparison uses the same request count, token distribution, output limits, model capability, context length, region, time period, and success definition. It also separates synchronous work from asynchronous work eligible for batch pricing.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe result should contain two primary measures:
- Monthly total: the amount charged for all successful requests, retries, cache operations, processing tiers, tools, and searches during the period.
- Effective cost per successful task: monthly total divided by tasks that reached your accepted quality or business outcome.
Per-million-token rates are only inputs to this model. They do not account for how much text your application sends, how much it asks the model to generate, whether prompts are reused, or how often a request must be retried or corrected.

Which cost components must be in the worksheet?
List every billable component as its own column. Combining categories too early hides the reason one provider is cheaper or more expensive.
| Component | What to record | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| New input tokens | Tokens that are sent without an existing reusable cache entry | They use the provider’s ordinary input rate. |
| Cache-write tokens | Tokens stored when a reusable prefix is first created | A cache write can have a different price from ordinary input. |
| Cache-hit tokens | Tokens read from an existing, valid prefix | High hit rates can reduce recurring input cost, but only when prompts are actually reused. |
| Output tokens | Tokens generated, including any completion up to the configured cap | Output rates are often materially different from input rates, so long answers can dominate spend. |
| Processing mode | Standard, batch, or another speed tier, with the share of requests in each | Asynchronous work may qualify for a lower batch rate, while interactive work generally needs standard processing. |
| Model and context tier | Exact model, context range, and output limit | Long-context or higher-capability tiers can have different prices and limits. |
| Geography and endpoint | Global, US-only, regional-processing, or compliance endpoint | Endpoint scope can change the rate and the data-handling trade-off. |
| Tools and search | Any separately priced tool invocation, retrieval, or search operation | Token charges may not be the complete request cost. |
| Retries and failed attempts | Attempts made before a task succeeds, including validation or repair calls | A low nominal rate can be outweighed by extra attempts. |
How do I measure my token mix before choosing a provider?
Use production-like observations rather than a single average. Export at least one representative billing period, or replay a fixed evaluation set, and record request count, input tokens, output tokens, cache status, model, region, processing mode, outcome, and retry count for every call.
Capture median and p95 token counts
Record the median and 95th-percentile (p95) input and output tokens. The median describes a typical request; p95 reveals the large prompts and long completions that can drive capacity and cost. Keep both values by workflow, because a chat endpoint, document extraction job, and coding assistant usually have different distributions.
Separate input states
Split input tokens into three mutually exclusive groups: new tokens, cache-write tokens, and cache-hit tokens. Measure the hit rate from request logs instead of assuming that a repeated-looking prompt will be reused. A small change at the beginning of a prompt can prevent a prefix from matching.
“Prompt caching preserves that state for a reusable prefix: the unchanged tokens at the beginning of a prompt.”
— OpenAI documentation
Keep system instructions, policy text, tool definitions, and user content separate in your measurements. This shows which portion is stable enough to cache and which portion changes on every request.
Measure output behavior, not just the cap
Record actual output tokens and the configured maximum. A high cap is not the same as high usage, but it can affect model selection, latency, and the cost of long-tail requests. Include truncated or refused outputs in your quality log so that a cheap request that fails to finish is not counted as a successful task.
How should cache writes and cache hits be priced?
Apply each provider’s published rate to the correct token bucket. Do not subtract cache-hit tokens from total input and then apply the ordinary input rate; cache hits need their own rate, and cache creation may have a separate write charge.
For a monthly period, calculate:
Input cost = (new input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × new-input rate) + (cache-write tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × cache-write rate) + (cache-hit tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × cache-hit rate)

Output cost = output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate
Then add tool, search, endpoint, and processing-mode charges. Run at least three cache scenarios:
Recommended Free Tools
- Low hit rate: a conservative case for changing prompts, new users, or short-lived sessions.
- Measured hit rate: the value observed in your logs.
- High hit rate: a sensitivity case showing the best result your architecture could plausibly reach.
Cache economics are workload-specific. A large stable prefix reused many times can make caching valuable; a mostly unique prompt may incur writes without enough hits to repay them.
When does batch processing change the comparison?
Separate interactive and asynchronous traffic before applying rates. Interactive requests have a user-visible latency requirement, while batch jobs can often wait for a provider’s batch window in exchange for lower processing prices.
Classify each workflow
- Interactive: chat replies, autocomplete, live agent actions, and other requests where the user is waiting.
- Asynchronous: overnight classification, bulk extraction, back-office summarization, and evaluation runs that can be submitted together.
- Mixed: a pipeline with an interactive first step and a deferred enrichment or audit step.
Calculate standard and batch spend independently, then weight them by the measured share of tokens in each mode. Do not apply a batch rate to the entire workload merely because some jobs can be delayed.
Anthropic example using the published Sonnet 4.6 rates
Anthropic lists Claude Sonnet 4.6 standard global processing at $3.00 per million input tokens and $15.00 per million output tokens. Its global batch rates are $1.50 and $7.50. The list prices are denominated in USD and effective May 27, 2026.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For an illustrative month containing 100 million input tokens and 20 million output tokens, with no cache, tools, or retries:
| Mode | Input calculation | Output calculation | Illustrative token subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard global | 100 × $3.00 | 20 × $15.00 | $600 |
| Global batch | 100 × $1.50 | 20 × $7.50 | $300 |
This is a rate application example, not a forecast of your bill. A real estimate must add cache writes and hits, the actual model mix, endpoint scope, tools, and retries. It also must confirm that the jobs meet the provider’s batch eligibility and timing requirements.
How do model and context choices affect a fair comparison?
Compare models that can perform the same task at the required quality level, not merely models with similar names or advertised positioning. Record the exact model identifier, context tier, maximum output, and any qualification attached to the published rate.

Match capability and output limits
If one model needs a larger output cap to complete the task, include that cap and its observed usage in the model. If one model produces more concise answers while meeting the same acceptance test, its lower output-token consumption is part of the economic result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Account for short and long contexts
Keep short-context and long-context requests in separate rows when a provider publishes different tiers. A workload with occasional very long documents should not be priced using the short-request average. Track the fraction of tokens and requests in each tier.
Use the same quality gate
Define success before comparing cost: for example, a structured record that passes schema validation and human sampling, or an answer that meets a task-specific rubric. Count a request that returns syntactically valid but unusable content as unsuccessful if it requires another model call or human repair.
How do geography and compliance endpoints affect the bill?
Document geography as part of the price, not as a deployment footnote. Separate global processing, US-only inference, regional-processing endpoints, and compliance-specific endpoints into distinct scenarios.
OpenAI documents a 10% uplift for eligible regional-processing and FedRAMP endpoints. Apply that uplift only when the request uses an eligible endpoint and retain the endpoint qualification beside the calculated rate. Anthropic’s published pricing separates standard, US-only inference, and batch-processing scopes; do not assume that a global rate applies to US-only processing.
For each scenario, record:
- Endpoint or processing scope.
- Whether all requests, or only a subset, must use it.
- Any price uplift or separate list price.
- Data-residency, compliance, and latency requirements.
- The percentage of traffic that can remain on a lower-cost global endpoint.
A compliant endpoint that costs more may still be the only acceptable option. Report it as a constrained scenario rather than calling the uplift waste.
What formula gives a realistic monthly total?
Use a row for each provider, model, endpoint, and processing mode. A general monthly formula is:
Monthly total = new-input cost + cache-write cost + cache-hit cost + output cost + batch or tier adjustments + tool/search charges + retry cost
Calculate every token term in millions. If a rate is expressed per million tokens, divide the measured token count by 1,000,000 before multiplying. Keep rates and quantities in separate cells so a price update does not require rewriting formulas.

How do I include retries and quality in the decision?
Token spend per request is not the same as cost per outcome. For each workflow, count initial attempts, automatic retries, validation calls, human-requested regenerations, and tasks abandoned after repeated failure.
Use:
Effective cost per successful task = total spend for all attempts ÷ number of tasks that met the acceptance test
Also report the success rate and median and p95 latency beside the cost. The available published pricing does not provide a controlled cross-vendor benchmark of quality, latency, or reliability, so a final choice requires an evaluation set that represents your own prompts and acceptance criteria.
Design a representative evaluation
- Select prompts from each important workflow, including long-context and difficult cases.
- Keep the input, tool definitions, output cap, temperature or equivalent controls, and retry policy constant where the APIs permit.
- Run enough repetitions to expose occasional failures rather than judging from one response per prompt.
- Score correctness, completeness, formatting, safety requirements, and human-review effort.
- Record tokens, latency, failures, retries, and successful-task status for every attempt.
- Insert those measurements into the same pricing worksheet used for production estimates.
What sensitivity cases should I run before selecting a provider?
At minimum, vary the factors most likely to change your bill or capacity plan:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Traffic growth: increase monthly requests to the next realistic operating level and a high-growth case.
- Output expansion: model longer answers or a higher proportion of tasks reaching the output cap.
- Cache-hit decline: reduce the measured hit rate to account for new users or prompt changes.
- Batch availability: move asynchronous traffic between standard and batch scenarios.
- Endpoint constraint: price the share that must use US-only, regional, or compliance processing.
- Retry increase: test the effect of a higher failure or repair rate.
- Model substitution: compare a less expensive model only if it passes the same quality gate.
Show the monthly total and effective cost per successful task for each case. A decision that wins only under one optimistic cache or batch assumption is fragile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes make API pricing comparisons misleading?
Comparing list rates without token volumes
A lower input rate does not help a workload dominated by expensive output tokens. Use your measured input-to-output ratio and retain separate calculations for each category.
Mixing standard and batch traffic
Applying the batch price to interactive calls understates cost. Label every request by processing mode before aggregating.
Ignoring cache creation
Counting only cache hits overstates savings. Include the initial write, the number of times a prefix is reused, and the portion of the prompt that actually remains unchanged.
Using averages that hide long tails
A mean token count can conceal p95 requests that drive spend or exceed a context limit. Keep median and p95 values and model long requests separately.

Leaving endpoint uplifts out of the total
Regional or compliance requirements can alter the rate. OpenAI’s documented 10% uplift for eligible regional-processing and FedRAMP endpoints must be applied when those endpoints are used.
Counting attempts instead of outcomes
If one provider requires more repair calls, request-level cost will look better than the real economics. Divide by successful tasks and include all attempts.
Treating a price page as permanent
Model catalogs, rates, context tiers, and processing options change. Record the effective date and scope beside every rate, and recheck the providers’ current pricing before publication, launch, and major budget reviews.
How can I turn the worksheet into a procurement or architecture decision?
- Set non-negotiables: identify required geography, compliance endpoint, latency, context length, output cap, and quality threshold.
- Build a common workload file: use the same request and token observations for every provider.
- Price each permitted scenario: separate model, context, endpoint, cache, standard, and batch rows.
- Run the quality evaluation: measure successful-task rate, latency, retries, and reviewer effort.
- Calculate effective economics: report monthly spend and cost per successful task, not just a per-million-token headline.
- Stress-test assumptions: vary traffic, cache hits, output length, batch share, and retries.
- Choose with an audit trail: save the rate source, effective date, endpoint scope, token logs, acceptance rubric, and formulas used.
The most defensible result is a range: a measured base case plus clearly labeled downside and upside scenarios. If the providers are close, latency, quality, operational tooling, and endpoint constraints may matter more than a small rate difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare prices in USD or my company’s billing currency?
Keep the provider calculation in the currency used on the price list, then convert the final monthly total using one documented exchange-rate date. Show the unconverted USD amount as well, because currency movement can otherwise look like a model-price change.
How often should an API pricing worksheet be updated?
Review it whenever a provider changes a model, rate, context tier, endpoint policy, or batch offering, and on a regular budget cadence even if no change is announced. Store the effective date with each rate so historical invoices can be reconciled to the correct version.
What should I do when one provider’s model has no directly equivalent counterpart?
Compare against the least expensive model that passes your predefined quality and output requirements, and label the capability mismatch. If no model passes, report that provider as failing the workload requirement rather than forcing a numerical price comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a lower monthly bill still be the worse choice?
Yes. A lower bill can accompany more failed tasks, slower completion, extra human review, or a compliance endpoint your application cannot use. Include those operational outcomes in the same decision record as token spend.
