Compare games by first ruling out titles that do not fit your platform, preferred play style, or content requirements. Then compare like-for-like playtime estimates, current prices, and player reviews—keeping critic scores separate. A low cost per hour can be a useful clue, but it cannot tell you whether you will enjoy a game.
How to build a shortlist that fits you
Start with the games you can actually play and the experiences you want. Note your platform, preferred genres, whether you want solo or multiplayer play, and any age or content requirements. Store tags can help you find candidates, but a genre label does not describe every feature or mode; read each game’s listing before deciding it fits.

For U.S. releases, ESRB’s search tool lets you filter by title, platform, and rating category. Check the rating and content descriptors, along with interactive elements when listed. This information can clarify whether a game’s content or purchase mechanics suit you. ESRB ratings are voluntary overall, although console manufacturers and some retailers and storefronts require them, so check the individual listing and platform as well.
Compare playtime estimates on the same basis
“How long is it?” can refer to very different things. Steam’s How Long To Beat curator page presents separate estimates for main story, main story plus side content, completionist play, and all styles. When comparing two games, use the same category for both.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
- Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
- GameStop. Power to the Players.
- Redemption: Instore and Online
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Main story: a useful comparison if you mainly want to finish the central campaign.
- Main story plus side content: a better match if you expect to do optional missions or activities along the way.
- Completionist: relevant if you aim to see or collect nearly everything.
- All styles: a broader estimate, but not interchangeable with any one of the categories above.
These figures are estimates, not promises about your own playtime. Your pace and choices may differ, so treat them as a way to compare similar play goals rather than a guarantee.
Compare prices for the same game version
Before comparing prices, match the platform, region, and edition. A standard edition on one platform is not directly comparable to a deluxe edition on another. Record the date you checked, and note whether the displayed price is a temporary sale or the regular price; storefront deals and availability change.

- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
If you want an additional signal, divide the price by a playtime estimate to get a rough cost per hour. Use the same playtime category for every game in the comparison. This calculation can help distinguish a short game from a longer one at similar prices, but it does not measure enjoyment or quality. A short, focused game may be worth its price to you, while extra hours do not automatically make a longer game better. GamingMetric discusses this limitation in its game-value guidance.

Read player reviews without confusing them with critic scores
Player-review sentiment and critic aggregates are different kinds of evidence. For example, a storefront’s player reviews reflect players’ expressed opinions; Metacritic’s Metascore is a weighted summary of critics’ opinions. Do not treat one as a substitute for the other or combine them into a single score without explaining the difference.

When a storefront provides the information, record the review source, platform, review count, and date checked alongside the player sentiment. Those details give a rating useful context: a score without its platform or the number of reviews is harder to interpret. GamingMetric describes Steam review positivity as player sentiment; Metacritic explains what its Metascore represents.
Use a comparison table for your finalists
Once you have a shortlist, fill in a table using the same platform, edition, region, and playtime category wherever possible. A “best fit for” note makes trade-offs clearer than a single combined score.
Rank #4
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
| What to record | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Title, platform, and edition | Identify exactly which version you are comparing. |
| Genre tags and relevant mode | Check the listing’s description and features; note whether you want solo, multiplayer, or both. |
| Main-story, main-plus-sides, and completionist estimates | Record available categories separately. Compare the same category across titles; if a value is unavailable, write “not stated” and name the source checked. |
| Current price and discount status | Use the same region and edition, and include the date checked. Mark a sale as temporary rather than treating it as the regular price. |
| Player-review sentiment, count, and date | Name the review source and platform, and record the review count and date when available. |
| Critic aggregate | Keep it in its own field, separate from player-review sentiment. |
| Rating, content descriptors, and purchase notices | Include these when relevant to your age or content requirements; note interactive elements such as randomized in-game purchase notices if shown. |
| Best fit for | State the reader priority the game serves, such as a preferred mode or campaign length, rather than declaring a universal winner. |
Make the decision around your priorities
Use the table to identify trade-offs: a game may fit your genre preferences and budget but have a shorter campaign, while another may offer more estimated hours but cost more or have different player-review context. Choose the one that best matches your platform, play style, budget, and content preferences—not the title with the longest estimate or the most favorable-looking number in isolation.
