Compare cybersecurity companies by lining up the same fiscal periods, separating reported results from estimates, and assessing scale, growth, recurring revenue, retention, cash generation, and valuation together. Revenue shows how large a business is; growth shows its direction; retention helps indicate whether subscription customers renew and expand. No single percentage or company ranking captures all three.

What should a fair cybersecurity-company comparison include?

A useful comparison answers several different questions rather than collapsing company performance into one score. Revenue indicates the business’s scale. Growth shows how quickly that scale is changing. Recurring-revenue and retention measures help explain the durability of subscription sales, while cash generation and valuation add context about efficiency and what investors are paying for that performance.

Start by recording each figure with its period, scope, and status. A reported full-year result is not interchangeable with an analyst estimate, and annual revenue is not interchangeable with annual recurring revenue (ARR). A comparison table should make those distinctions visible rather than implying that figures are directly comparable when they are not.

  • Scale: revenue for a named fiscal year or quarter, plus the company’s main market segment.
  • Growth: year-over-year revenue growth calculated over comparable periods, with estimates clearly labeled.
  • Recurring-revenue quality: ARR or another recurring-revenue measure, if the company reports one.
  • Retention: gross retention and net retention, including the date and definition used.
  • Profitability and cash: operating margin, billings, and free cash flow where available.
  • Valuation: a dated multiple such as enterprise value to revenue (EV/revenue), considered after operating performance.

Keep a source and date beside every number. If a company does not report a particular measure, mark it as not stated rather than substituting a different metric or guessing.

How do I align periods and separate actual results from estimates?

First put the companies on a common time basis—or explicitly label their different fiscal year-ends. Then separate historical reported results from forecasts. This prevents a calendar-year estimate for one company from appearing equivalent to another company’s completed fiscal-year result.

Build the comparison around a period label

Use labels such as “FY2025 reported,” “trailing 12 months ended July 31, 2025,” or “2025A–2026E estimate dated March 31, 2026.” “A” denotes an actual period and “E” an estimate in the cited benchmark. If a source calendarizes financials to December year-end, say so: Houlihan Lokey’s valuation table is based on dated 2025 estimates and calendarized to December year-end.

Keep unlike measures in separate columns

Revenue, ARR, billings, and free cash flow answer different questions. Revenue is recognized over the reporting period; ARR is a point-in-time annualized measure of recurring contracts; billings reflect amounts invoiced under a company’s accounting presentation; and free cash flow describes cash generation under the company’s reported calculation. Do not put one in a column labeled as another, or compute growth by comparing an estimate with a reported period unless that estimate’s basis is clear.

When fiscal periods differ, show the date next to each value. Do not silently shift a result into a calendar year or treat a trailing-12-month measure as a fiscal-year measure. The point of normalization is transparency, not making every row look identical.

How should I compare revenue and growth?

Use revenue to understand scale and comparable year-over-year growth to understand momentum. A smaller company can grow faster from a lower base, so growth rate alone does not establish that it is larger, more profitable, or a better investment.

Illustrative revenue-growth benchmark

The figures below are revenue-growth estimates for 2025A–2026E, based on PitchBook/company filings and dated March 31, 2026 by Momentum Cyber. They are estimates—not current reported revenue or a record of completed 2026 results.

Company 2025A–2026E revenue growth Basis and date
Cloudflare 27% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
Netskope 23% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
Rubrik 23% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
CrowdStrike 22% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
Zscaler 21% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
SentinelOne 20% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
Palo Alto Networks 13% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
Fortinet 11% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026
Okta 9% Estimate; Momentum Cyber, dated March 31, 2026

For a separate reported-results example, Fortinet reported $6.80 billion in revenue for full-year 2025, up 14% year over year, in results released in 2026. That reported growth rate is not the same observation as the 11% 2025A–2026E estimate above: the periods and status differ. Preserve both labels rather than selecting one as the company’s unqualified “growth rate.”

For companies with data across several years, calculate a compound annual growth rate only when the starting and ending values cover a clearly stated interval and use a consistent revenue definition. A single-year growth rate can be affected by timing, acquisitions, or a difficult comparison year; a multi-year rate can smooth those effects but may conceal a recent slowdown. Use whichever period best matches the decision, and display the underlying years.

When does ARR tell me more than revenue?

ARR can add useful context for subscription-heavy cybersecurity businesses because it indicates the annualized value of recurring contracts at a point in time. It is not a substitute for recognized revenue: contract timing, usage, services, and accounting treatment can create differences between ARR and revenue.

CrowdStrike reported $5.252751 billion in ARR and 24% ARR growth as of January 31, 2026. Those figures describe ARR at that date and its growth, not the company’s revenue growth for the same period. Keep that distinction explicit when comparing it with companies that report revenue but do not provide a directly comparable ARR figure.

ARR is most helpful when read with retention and customer-expansion information. A high growth figure driven primarily by new customer acquisition tells a different story from one supported by renewals and expansion in the existing customer base. If the company does not publish a compatible recurring-revenue measure, do not manufacture one from revenue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between gross retention and net retention?

Gross retention measures how much recurring revenue from an existing customer cohort remains after renewals, before expansion is counted. Dollar-based net retention (DBNR) includes the effects of expansion, contraction, and churn within that existing cohort. Net retention can exceed 100% when expansion among retained customers more than offsets lost or reduced contracts.

Reported retention figures need their definitions

Company Measure Reported value and period Comparability detail
CrowdStrike Dollar-based net retention 115%; year-end January 31, 2026 Includes renewals, expansion, contraction, and churn; excludes incident-response and proactive-services revenue.
CrowdStrike Gross retention 97%; reported in a 2025 statement by CFO Burt Podbere Do not treat as the same measure or period as the 115% DBNR figure.
Zscaler Dollar-based net retention 114% for the trailing year ended July 31, 2025; 116% in 2024 Zscaler defines the measure by comparing recurring revenue from a customer cohort with the same metric for the prior 12-month period.

These figures should not be ranked as if they were calculated on an identical basis. The reporting dates differ, and companies may define their cohorts, included revenue, and measurement windows differently. Even when two metrics share a name, check the company’s definition before drawing a conclusion.

Gross retention and net retention complement each other. Gross retention focuses on how much recurring business survives without the benefit of expansion; net retention shows the combined outcome after expansion and losses. A company can therefore have net retention above 100% while still losing some customer revenue through churn or contraction.

How should profitability, cash generation, and valuation affect the comparison?

Growth is more informative when considered alongside the resources a company uses to achieve it. Compare operating margin, billings, and free cash flow where the companies report them on a sufficiently clear basis. Strong cash generation can indicate that growth is translating into cash, but one figure alone does not establish the quality or durability of a business.

Fortinet reported $2.21 billion in free cash flow for full-year 2025 in its 2026 results and said it exceeded its Rule of 45 for the sixth consecutive year. Treat the free-cash-flow amount and the Rule of 45 statement as company-reported facts for that period; they are not a substitute for aligning peer metrics or examining how a company defines its rule.

Consider valuation only after the operating comparison. Houlihan Lokey’s dated 2025E estimates show the following EV/revenue examples. The table is a snapshot of estimates, not a timeless valuation or a current trading multiple.

Company 2025E EV/revenue Source and basis
CrowdStrike 17.5x Houlihan Lokey; dated 2025 estimates, calendarized to December year-end
CyberArk 12.1x Houlihan Lokey; dated 2025 estimates, calendarized to December year-end
Palo Alto Networks 11.3x Houlihan Lokey; dated 2025 estimates, calendarized to December year-end
Fortinet 10.5x Houlihan Lokey; dated 2025 estimates, calendarized to December year-end
Zscaler 10.0x Houlihan Lokey; dated 2025 estimates, calendarized to December year-end
Okta 5.8x Houlihan Lokey; dated 2025 estimates, calendarized to December year-end

A higher EV/revenue multiple means investors are assigning a higher enterprise value relative to the revenue basis used in that estimate. It does not, by itself, prove that a company is overvalued or undervalued. Growth expectations, margins, retention, risk, and the date of the valuation all affect interpretation; compare multiples only when the revenue basis and estimate date are clear.

What is a practical step-by-step way to compare companies?

Use a worksheet that preserves each metric’s source and definition. The process below helps prevent the most common apples-to-oranges comparisons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the peer group. Include companies serving relevant security segments, and note that segments may differ. A revenue comparison across unlike business mixes can obscure what each company sells.
  2. Set the comparison date. Decide whether the question concerns the latest completed fiscal year, a common trailing period, or a forecast horizon. Label each company’s fiscal year-end.
  3. Collect reported revenue. Record the amount, currency, fiscal period, geography or scope if specified, and whether it is reported. Do not mix it with ARR or an estimate.
  4. Add comparable growth. Use the same year-over-year basis for every company where possible. Mark estimates with the estimate period and date, and keep them apart from reported growth.
  5. Add recurring metrics. Record ARR and retention only when the company reports them. Copy the stated cohort window and included or excluded revenue into the notes.
  6. Assess cash and profitability. Add free cash flow, operating margin, or billings with the company’s period and definition. If a peer does not disclose a comparable measure, write “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an inference.
  7. Add valuation last. State the multiple, estimate year, and valuation snapshot date. Do not compare a dated estimate with a current multiple as if they were observed together.
  8. Write a qualified conclusion. Describe which company leads on each dimension, then explain the trade-off. Avoid declaring an overall winner unless the comparison criteria and their weights are explicit.

A well-labeled table is more useful than a league table without context. If one company leads on growth while another is larger or generates more free cash flow, preserve those distinctions rather than forcing them into a single rank.

Which comparison mistakes should I avoid?

  • Mixing estimates with actuals: label forecasts and reported results in separate fields.
  • Comparing fiscal years as calendar years: show the actual reporting period and any calendarization applied by the source.
  • Treating ARR as revenue: state which metric is being used and its measurement date.
  • Ranking retention without definitions: put cohort, period, included revenue, and metric type beside the percentage.
  • Assuming growth means quality: examine cash generation and margins as well as the growth rate.
  • Using valuation as a standalone verdict: a multiple is meaningful only with its date and revenue basis, and in the context of operating performance.

The central discipline is to preserve the qualifications attached to each number. When period, definition, or status is unavailable, make that limitation visible rather than implying precision the data does not support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does calendarized financial data mean?

Calendarizing adjusts a company’s fiscal-year presentation to a common calendar-year basis so analysts can compare estimates across businesses with different fiscal year-ends. It is an adjustment to the presentation, not a change to the company’s own reported fiscal period.

How do I calculate cybersecurity revenue CAGR?

Use the formula: (ending revenue ÷ starting revenue)^(1 ÷ number of years) − 1. The start and end values must use the same revenue definition and currency basis; state the endpoints so the result cannot be mistaken for one-year growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can customer retention be below zero?

A retention percentage based on revenue retained from a starting customer cohort is ordinarily bounded at zero on the downside; it can exceed 100% when expansion is included. If a reported metric appears outside the expected range, verify whether it is actually a retention rate or a different measure.

Why might two sources show different growth rates for the same company?

They may use different fiscal periods, actual versus estimated values, or differing data cutoffs and calculation methods. Check each source’s date and basis before treating the difference as a contradiction.
