The best cloud security platform is not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one that covers your actual cloud services and workloads, detects and can contain threats while they run, and fits your identity, development, monitoring, and response systems without creating an unmanageable permissions or alerting burden. Compare platforms in that order: coverage, runtime protection, and integration. Then validate the shortlist with a proof of concept using your own accounts, containers, Kubernetes clusters, infrastructure-as-code (IaC), and incident workflows.

This method applies whether you are evaluating a cloud-native application platform, a cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP), or a set of specialized tools. It also prevents a common mistake: treating cloud security posture management (CSPM), which finds configuration and compliance problems, as equivalent to cloud workload protection (CWPP), which protects running machines, containers, Kubernetes, and serverless workloads.

What should you compare first: coverage, runtime protection, or integration?

Start with coverage, score runtime protection separately, and assess integration only after you know what must be protected. A platform cannot compensate for an unsupported service, and a broad inventory of posture checks does not prove that it can detect a live attack. Integration determines whether useful findings reach the people and systems that can act on them.

  1. Coverage: map cloud accounts, services, regions, workload types, and security functions.
  2. Runtime protection: verify live behavioral telemetry, prevention, response, and attack-path context.
  3. Integration: test account onboarding, identity, DevSecOps, Kubernetes, SIEM/SOAR, ticketing, and bidirectional actions.
  4. Operations and commercial fit: document permissions, sensors, data handling, feature packaging, and usage metering.

Use the same test workloads and acceptance criteria for every vendor. Otherwise, a polished demonstration can hide gaps that appear only in your environment.

What does “coverage” mean in a cloud security platform?

Coverage is the combination of security functions, cloud providers, services, regions, and workload types that a platform can actually inspect and protect. Counting dashboard checks is insufficient; two products may advertise thousands of checks while covering very different parts of your estate.

Which security functions should a CNAPP include?

A cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) typically brings together these functions:

  • CSPM: cloud security posture management for configuration, compliance, and exposure findings.
  • CWPP: cloud workload protection for virtual machines (VMs), containers, Kubernetes, and sometimes serverless workloads.
  • KSPM: Kubernetes security posture management, including cluster configuration and workload controls.
  • CIEM: cloud infrastructure entitlement management, which analyzes identities, permissions, and excessive privilege.
  • DSPM: data security posture management, including discovery and exposure of sensitive data stores.
  • Vulnerability management: prioritization of vulnerable hosts, images, packages, and services.
  • Code and IaC scanning: checks for insecure source code, Terraform or other IaC templates, container images, and registries before deployment.
  • Cloud detection and response: correlation and investigation of suspicious activity after deployment.

Tenable describes CNAPP as correlating identity, workload, configuration, data, and runtime context across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Treat that as a capability to verify, not as proof that every service or plan includes every module.

How do you measure cloud-provider and service coverage?

Create a service inventory for each provider rather than recording a single “AWS/Azure/GCP supported” checkbox. Include production and nonproduction accounts, managed services, private endpoints, and regulated or government regions. Ask the vendor to identify the first supported release date for newly introduced services and how quickly coverage is updated.

Coverage dimension Questions to document
Cloud providers Are AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud supported in the editions you are buying? Are there differences between providers?
Service families Are compute, storage, databases, networking, serverless, containers, Kubernetes, identity, and managed data services covered?
Regions Which commercial, sovereign, and government regions are supported? Where is collected telemetry stored?
Collection model Is inspection agentless, agent-based, or both? What visibility or controls are lost with an agentless deployment?
Plan boundaries Which checks, sensors, response actions, and compliance frameworks require a paid protection plan?

Elastic documents both agentless and agent-based CSPM for AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, with posture evaluations running every 24 hours. That schedule may be adequate for configuration drift but is not the same as real-time runtime monitoring; score those capabilities independently.

How should workload coverage be recorded?

List every workload class and its required control. VMs may need host telemetry and exploit prevention; containers need image, registry, and process visibility; Kubernetes needs API, admission, node, and workload controls; serverless needs function, dependency, event, and identity context. Include databases and object storage when they hold sensitive data, even if the platform treats them as posture-only assets.

What is the difference between CSPM and CWPP?

CSPM finds and prioritizes insecure cloud configuration, while CWPP protects workloads as they execute. A CSPM finding might report a public storage bucket or an overly permissive security group; a CWPP control might detect a malicious process, exploit, or suspicious network connection on a running host or container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capability CSPM CWPP
Primary moment Before deployment and during configuration drift After deployment while workloads execute
Typical evidence API configuration, policy state, compliance benchmark Process, file, network, kernel, image, and host behavior
Typical action Remediate configuration, open a ticket, or block an IaC change Kill a process, quarantine a host, block an exploit, or isolate a workload
Key limitation May not see an attack that uses an otherwise valid configuration May miss an exposure or risky permission that has not yet been exploited

Use both when the risk warrants it. A platform that scans images or configuration but has no live process and network visibility should not be scored as equivalent to one that can observe and contain a running threat.

How do you evaluate cloud runtime protection?

Runtime protection is the platform’s ability to detect, explain, and—where authorized—stop malicious or dangerous activity after deployment. Require evidence for VMs, containers, Kubernetes nodes and workloads, and serverless functions rather than accepting a generic “runtime” label.

Which runtime capabilities matter?

  • Behavioral detection: recognition of unusual processes, privilege changes, persistence, lateral movement, and suspicious cloud API use.
  • Exploit and malware detection: coverage for known vulnerabilities, exploit techniques, malicious files, and memory or process abuse.
  • Prevention and enforcement: policies that can block execution, deny an admission request, stop a process, or isolate a workload.
  • Host and network visibility: process trees, connections, DNS, file activity, identity, and relevant kernel events.
  • Response actions: containment, credential or token invalidation, host isolation, workload scaling or deletion, and guided remediation.
  • Contextual correlation: a path from the runtime alert to the vulnerable image, exposed service, excessive identity privilege, or misconfiguration that enabled it.
  • Noise controls: tuning by workload, namespace, identity, environment, and approved behavior without disabling meaningful detections.

OWASP identifies eBPF as a modern way to observe Linux-kernel activity for runtime protection. Ask whether eBPF or an equivalent sensor is used, which kernels and managed Kubernetes distributions are supported, and what events are unavailable when a sensor cannot be installed.

How should a runtime proof of concept be designed?

Use representative, disposable workloads and predefine success criteria. Do not rely on a vendor’s scripted demo or claim a detection rate without a documented test.

  1. Onboard a production-like cloud account in a read-only mode, then a separate test account where response actions are permitted.
  2. Deploy a privileged container, a container built from a deliberately vulnerable image, an exposed storage resource, and a serverless function with a vulnerable dependency.
  3. Generate benign simulations of suspicious process execution, privilege escalation, unexpected outbound traffic, and access to sensitive cloud APIs. Coordinate these tests with your security team so alerts are not mistaken for an incident.
  4. Record detection latency, evidence shown to the analyst, severity logic, identity and asset context, and the exact response action available.
  5. Repeat with normal application traffic and approved administrative activity to measure tuning effort and false-positive burden.
  6. Remove the test workloads and verify that the platform closes or retains findings according to your incident-retention policy.

Tenable’s 2025 Cloud Security Risk Report names a “toxic cloud trilogy”: 29% of organizations still face publicly exposed workloads that are critically vulnerable and highly privileged. Whether or not that statistic describes your environment, use the three conditions as a practical test case: exposure, exploitable weakness, and excessive privilege should appear together in one prioritized path when the platform supports that correlation.

How important is attack-path and context correlation?

Correlation determines whether analysts receive a list of isolated alerts or a defensible explanation of what an attacker can reach. The strongest implementations connect identity, exposure, vulnerability, configuration, data sensitivity, and runtime evidence into an attack path.

For each high-severity finding, ask the analyst to answer four questions without opening several unrelated consoles:

  • What asset is affected, in which account, region, cluster, namespace, or application?
  • Which identity or service account can reach it, and what permissions are actually usable?
  • Which vulnerability, public exposure, or configuration creates the path?
  • What is the shortest safe remediation or containment action, and what dependency could it break?

Score prioritization on explainability as well as accuracy. A mathematically sophisticated risk score that cannot show its contributing evidence is difficult to defend during an incident or audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which integrations should you test, and in what order?

Test integrations in operational order, beginning with the cloud control plane and ending with the systems that receive and act on findings. A connector that merely imports alerts is less useful than one that preserves asset and identity context and supports a controlled, bidirectional response.

Cloud accounts and APIs

Verify onboarding for each provider, account or subscription hierarchy, organization-level policies, private regions, and cross-account access. Record every permission requested, whether permissions are read-only or write-capable, how credentials rotate, and what happens when an API limit is reached. Measure the time from a cloud change to a finding and from a remediation to a cleared finding.

Identity and entitlement systems

Connect your identity provider and entitlement data so findings distinguish human users, workload identities, roles, and service accounts. Test dormant accounts, federated sessions, temporary credentials, and privilege changes. Confirm that exported findings retain the identity identifier and the cloud account in which it was used.

CI/CD, source control, and IaC

Run IaC, source, dependency, image, and registry scans in the same pipeline stages your developers use. Establish whether a policy can warn, fail a build, create a pull-request comment, or require an approval. Test suppression and expiration workflows so an exception cannot silently become permanent. Tenable emphasizes CI/CD integration and cross-layer correlation; validate the exact repositories, pipeline engines, and image registries you operate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kubernetes and registries

Test managed and self-managed clusters, admission control, namespace scoping, node sensors, and registry synchronization. Confirm whether the product can relate a running pod to its image digest, source repository, deployment manifest, service account, and discovered vulnerability. Check behavior during cluster upgrades and when a node is replaced.

SIEM, SOAR, ticketing, and chat

Measure event latency, field mapping, deduplication, rate limits, and the ability to update or close a finding from the receiving system. A useful integration carries the original asset, account, region, identity, severity rationale, and remediation link rather than a title and a numeric score. For SOAR, test approval gates and rollback for destructive actions.

Existing endpoint and network security

Determine whether cloud runtime alerts can be correlated with endpoint, network, vulnerability, and asset systems already used by your security operations center. Microsoft Defender for Cloud documents native CSPM for Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, threat protection across those platforms, and integration with the Defender XDR portal and Microsoft Security ecosystem. FortiCNAPP documents integration with Fortinet Security Fabric. These ecosystem advantages matter only if your teams already operate the relevant systems and the required plan includes the connectors.

How do the major platform approaches differ?

The following descriptions identify positioning and documented capabilities, not independent performance rankings. Feature availability, supported services, and packaging can change, so confirm the current plan matrix before signing a contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Documented emphasis Questions to verify
Microsoft Defender for Cloud CNAPP combining CSPM, CWPP, DevSecOps, multicloud coverage, and integration with the Defender ecosystem; Microsoft lists protection plans for servers, containers, resource management, App Service, and other workload types. Which protection plans are enabled for each subscription, how non-Microsoft clouds are billed, and which response actions appear in your Defender XDR workflow?
Tenable Cloud Security Exposure-path prioritization and correlation of configuration, identity, data, and runtime behavior across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud; strong emphasis on CI/CD and cross-layer context. Which cloud services, runtime sensors, pipeline systems, and attack-path views are included in the selected edition?
Elastic CSPM Agentless and agent-based posture monitoring for AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, with CIS-aligned evaluation and a documented 24-hour evaluation cycle. Is the posture cadence sufficient for your risk, and what additional Elastic components are needed for live workload detection and response?
FortiCNAPP Combines CSPM, KSPM, CIEM, CWPP, application and IaC security, runtime detection, compliance mapping, and Fortinet Security Fabric integration. Which modules and Fabric connectors are licensed, and how do sensors and response actions operate in non-Fortinet environments?

What weighted scorecard should you use?

Assign weights that reflect your environment instead of copying a generic analyst ranking. A company running thousands of containers may give runtime and Kubernetes more weight than a mostly serverless organization; a regulated business may give data residency and audit evidence greater weight.

Criterion Questions to answer Suggested evidence
Cloud and service coverage Which AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, SaaS, and managed services are supported? How quickly do new services appear? Signed service matrix, account inventory, and gap list
Workload coverage Are VMs, containers, Kubernetes nodes, serverless functions, databases, and storage protected? Successful onboarding and a workload-by-workload test
Runtime depth Is there live behavioral detection, prevention, response, eBPF or equivalent telemetry, and low-noise tuning? Detection timeline, process evidence, containment exercise
Context and prioritization Can identity, exposure, vulnerability, configuration, and runtime signals form an attack path? Analyst walkthrough of three realistic paths
Shift-left controls Does it scan IaC, code, images, registries, and CI/CD pipelines before deployment? Pipeline results, policy gates, exception expiration
Integration fit Does it connect to your clouds, identity provider, SIEM/SOAR, ticketing, registries, and existing security stack? Connector test, field mapping, latency, API-limit report
Operations What permissions, agents, sensors, data residency, APIs, and response workflows are required? Permission review, architecture diagram, operating runbook
Commercial fit Which features are included in the selected plan, and how is usage metered? Written quote, plan matrix, overage examples

Use a 0-to-5 score for each criterion, multiply by its weight, and keep a separate “disqualifier” list. An unsupported regulated region, inability to protect a critical workload, or an unacceptable write permission can outweigh a high composite score.

What are the hidden operational and commercial requirements?

Ask for the deployment and pricing details that are easy to miss in a feature demonstration.

  • Permissions: least-privilege roles, organization-level access, write actions, and credential rotation.
  • Agents and sensors: supported operating systems and kernels, managed-service limitations, upgrade process, and performance overhead.
  • Data handling: telemetry destinations, retention, encryption, tenant isolation, residency, and support access.
  • Scale: API quotas, event throughput, account limits, and behavior during cloud-provider outages.
  • Administration: role-based access, separation of duties, audit logs, policy inheritance, and multi-tenant management.
  • Evidence: export formats, immutable audit records, compliance mappings, and links from a finding to raw evidence.
  • Packaging: modules that are bundled, optional, metered by host, workload, resource, data volume, or event count, and any minimum commitments.

Require written confirmation of what is included in the selected plan. “Platform” branding often covers separately licensed CSPM, runtime, CI/CD, data, and response features.

What mistakes make cloud-platform comparisons unreliable?

Comparing check counts

Check counts reward breadth without measuring relevance, update speed, or remediation quality. Map each check to an asset and an action your team can take.

Equating posture scans with runtime security

A daily configuration evaluation cannot reveal every process, exploit, or credential-use event. Score its cadence and evidence separately from live detection.

Ignoring agentless blind spots

Agentless collection is fast and useful for APIs and images, but it may not see process behavior or kernel events. Ask what is unavailable without a sensor.

Accepting one-cloud demonstrations

Repeat the same test in every provider and region you operate. Differences in APIs, managed services, and identity models can change the result.

Overlooking exceptions

Temporary waivers are necessary during migrations, but they need owners, expiration dates, compensating controls, and audit history. Test whether the product enforces those fields.

How do you make the final buying decision?

Shortlist platforms that meet every hard requirement, then select the one with the highest weighted score and lowest operational friction. Document unresolved gaps and compensating controls instead of hiding them in an overall score.

  1. Define critical assets, cloud accounts, regions, workload types, regulatory obligations, and response authorities.
  2. Build a requirements matrix covering CSPM, CWPP, KSPM, CIEM, DSPM, vulnerability, code, IaC, detection, and response.
  3. Obtain current plan, service, region, integration, and metering documentation in writing.
  4. Run identical coverage, runtime, and integration tests with representative workloads.
  5. Score evidence, record failures and manual workarounds, and apply disqualifiers.
  6. Negotiate a pilot or phased rollout with success criteria, data-retention terms, support escalation, and a review date.
  7. Reassess quarterly as cloud services, platform modules, permissions, and workload architectures change.

The practical choice is the platform that gives your team trustworthy context and safe action across its real estate—not the platform with the most impressive acronym list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a small team use a CNAPP without a dedicated cloud-security engineer?

Yes, but only if ownership and defaults are explicit. Choose a platform with guided onboarding, policy templates, role-based workflows, and integrations that create actionable tickets; otherwise the volume of findings can exceed the team’s capacity.

How often should cloud-security platform coverage be revalidated?

Revalidate after each major cloud-provider launch, architecture change, or platform-plan change, and at least quarterly for stable environments. Keep a dated service and region inventory so a previously supported resource does not silently become an unmonitored exception.

Should runtime sensors be installed on every cloud workload?

Not necessarily. Prioritize internet-facing, privileged, sensitive-data, and high-change workloads, then document the blind spots for assets that remain agentless; the decision should follow threat and compliance requirements rather than a blanket deployment rule.

What evidence should a vendor provide during procurement?

Request a current feature and service matrix, permission list, data-flow diagram, API limits, supported-region list, response-action documentation, and a written description of how usage is metered. Ask that each item be tied to the exact edition and contract term you are considering.
