Compare platforms by the work you need done—not by whether a vendor calls its product AI, low-code, or no-code. First identify whether you need to connect existing apps, build a business application, automate desktop work, create an AI model or agent, or combine several of those jobs. Then test each candidate against your integrations, human oversight, coding needs, governance, and operating requirements.
Start with the job, not the category label
These categories overlap. A workflow builder may connect business systems and include AI steps; an app platform may also provide automation; an agent-building tool may offer visual configuration alongside developer options. “Low-code” and “no-code” describe ways of building more than they identify a single type of product.
Microsoft Power Platform is one example of that overlap: its documentation covers agents, apps, automations, AI Builder, connectors, and administration within a platform family. That illustrates a product ecosystem, not a template for every vendor. Microsoft Power Platform documentation
- Workflow orchestration: Connect applications, move data, and run actions when events or conditions occur.
- Business app development: Build interfaces and applications for employees or customers.
- AI models or agents: Add model-driven processing or create systems that can interpret requests and take actions.
- Combined use: Choose a platform or connected set of tools if the requirement spans more than one job.
Write down the business task and expected outcome before comparing products. “Process incoming requests” is too broad; specify the source, destination, decision points, exceptions, and any approval required.

Separate AI that helps build from AI that runs
Ask where AI appears in the lifecycle. It may assist a person while they author a workflow, operate as a step inside a defined workflow, or act with more discretion as an agent. These are different capabilities with different oversight needs.
AI as an authoring assistant
Microsoft documents Copilot in Power Automate as natural-language assistance for creating flows. That helps with authoring; it does not by itself establish that the resulting automation can safely handle every exception or make autonomous business decisions. The documentation notes that some related capabilities may be in preview, so check their current release state, region, and administrative requirements before relying on them. AI as a workflow step
A workflow can call an AI capability for a bounded task, such as processing information, while the surrounding flow controls what happens next. Microsoft describes AI Builder as a way to use prebuilt or custom models in Power Apps and Power Automate. Treat the vendor’s “point-and-click” description as product positioning, not proof that a particular model will meet your accuracy or compliance needs. Overview of AI Builder
AI as an agent
An agent may interpret requests and select actions rather than follow only a fixed sequence. Decide which actions it may take, which decisions need human review, and how the team will handle incorrect or incomplete results. Microsoft’s comparison of tools for declarative agents distinguishes a pro-code toolkit, low-code Copilot Studio, and no-code Agent Builder; that spectrum applies to building declarative agents in Microsoft’s ecosystem, not to all platforms. Compare the capabilities your use case actually needs
Use this matrix to turn a shortlist into specific questions. Score candidates only on requirements relevant to your intended workflow; a platform should not earn credit for features your project does not use.
| Comparison area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Primary job | Are you connecting existing apps, building a business application, automating desktop work, creating an AI agent or model, or combining these? |
| AI role | Does AI help author the workflow, run as a step in a defined process, or make decisions as an agent? What needs human approval? |
| Integrations | Are the required apps and data sources supported by prebuilt connectors? Can the platform call the APIs or custom services you need? |
| Control and skills | Can business users configure the solution? At what point will formulas, scripts, API work, or developer involvement be necessary? |
| Governance | Can administrators manage environments, access, security, and deployments in a way that fits the organization? |
| Operations | How will the team monitor runs, handle errors, recover failed work, and maintain the solution? |
| Ecosystem fit | Does it fit the organization’s identity, data, applications, and administration practices? |
| Commercial terms | What do the current regional licensing rules, usage accounting, plan limits, and feature availability allow? |
Check integrations before you commit
List every application, data source, API, and service the workflow must touch. A large connector catalog matters less than support for the specific systems and operations you need. Confirm whether the connector supports the necessary actions, authentication method, data shape, and frequency for your scenario.

Distinguish a prebuilt connector from a custom integration. Microsoft’s connector documentation covers both prebuilt connectors and custom connectors for tailored scenarios. If a required integration is not ready-made, establish who will build and maintain the custom connector or API connection, and include that work in the comparison. Microsoft connectors overview

No-code can let business users configure a solution through a visual interface; low-code generally leaves room for more technical customization; pro-code offers developers deeper control. These are useful working distinctions, not universal boundaries. Salesforce, for example, describes low-code as allowing code for complex features and integrations while positioning no-code for simpler tools. That is one vendor’s framing, not an industry standard. Evaluate the handoff between makers and developers. A tool may be quick for a first version but require technical help for custom logic, integrations, or production changes. Conversely, a developer-oriented toolkit may provide control that a simple business-user workflow does not need. Ask vendors to show how a representative change would be made by the people who will own it.
Include governance and day-to-day operation
A working prototype is not enough. Establish who can create, approve, deploy, and administer solutions; how access and security are managed; and how environments and resources are controlled. Microsoft identifies environment, security, governance, resource, and settings administration as Power Platform capabilities, but the exact controls available to your organization depend on the shortlisted product and applicable licensing. Microsoft Power Platform documentation
Operational fit deserves a live demonstration. Have the vendor walk through your team’s likely failure and recovery cases: a connector outage, rejected or malformed input, a missing permission, or an AI result that needs review. Confirm how the team would detect the failure, identify its owner, correct it, and safely resume the work. There is not enough comparable evidence here to rank vendors on operations.
Run a focused evaluation before choosing
- Define one representative workflow. Document its trigger, inputs, systems, rules, exceptions, expected output, and approval points.
- Set must-haves. Identify required connectors, AI behavior, user roles, developer involvement, governance controls, and recovery needs.
- Ask each vendor to demonstrate the same scenario. Include a normal run and at least one realistic failure or exception, rather than accepting a feature tour.
- Record evidence against the matrix. Separate demonstrated capabilities from roadmap statements, assumptions, or features that require a particular plan or administrator setup.
- Verify current terms and availability. Check official licensing, usage limits, feature availability, security, and service documentation for your region and plan before purchase.
Do not declare a universal winner from category labels or vendor comparisons. For example, n8n positions its product around customizable workflow automation with AI, code, and custom logic, and Power Automate around low-code automation in the Microsoft ecosystem. That is useful context about vendor positioning, not an independent benchmark. n8n’s comparison with Power Automate
