The most reliable way to compare AI stocks is to put each company on the same time period, accounting basis, business scope, and share-price date before ranking it. Start with total-company revenue and the relevant AI-related segment, then compare GAAP margins and their direction, and only then test whether the market price fairly reflects future growth and profitability. On the latest cited full-year figures, NVIDIA grew fastest and reported the highest gross margin, Microsoft generated the largest and most diversified revenue base, and AMD combined a smaller base with strong data-center growth. Those facts do not, by themselves, identify the best investment: valuation, concentration, capital needs, export restrictions, and the durability of AI demand can change the conclusion.
What is the right way to compare AI stocks?
Use a repeatable scorecard rather than a headline ranking. For every company, record the reporting period, revenue, year-over-year growth, AI-related revenue, gross margin, operating margin, net margin, free-cash-flow margin, and valuation multiples. Keep GAAP and adjusted figures in separate columns, use one price date for all shares, and label whether a number covers the entire company or only an AI-exposed segment.
This matters because “AI stock” describes very different businesses. A chip designer may sell most of its products into accelerated computing, while a cloud platform can grow AI workloads inside a much broader software and infrastructure operation. Comparing one company’s quarterly data-center result with another company’s full-year revenue, or comparing a GAAP margin with an adjusted margin, produces a ranking that looks precise but is not economically comparable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich companies and business scopes belong in the comparison?
Define the investable universe before collecting numbers. A practical starting set can include chip designers such as NVIDIA and AMD, cloud and software platforms such as Microsoft, and any other listed company whose filings identify material AI-related revenue. Then decide whether your question concerns the whole company or the AI-linked operation.

Total-company comparison
Use consolidated revenue, consolidated margins, and consolidated cash flow when deciding whether one stock is financially stronger as a complete business. This approach captures diversification, corporate overhead, non-AI products, and the cash required to fund the entire operation.
AI-segment comparison
Use the closest disclosed segment or product category when asking which business is gaining AI demand fastest. Segment labels are not interchangeable: NVIDIA’s data-center revenue, Microsoft Cloud revenue, and AMD’s data-center revenue include different products and services. Microsoft Cloud is a useful scale and cloud-growth proxy, not a pure measure of AI sales.
Write the scope in the worksheet
- Company and ticker.
- Fiscal year or trailing-twelve-month window.
- Currency and accounting standard.
- Consolidated or segment-level scope.
- GAAP or adjusted basis.
- Share-price timestamp and currency.
How do the latest official figures compare?
The following figures illustrate why period and business-mix labels must remain attached to every number. NVIDIA and Microsoft figures are fiscal 2026 results published in 2026. AMD’s annual figures cover fiscal 2025, while its separate Q2 fiscal 2026 figures are quarterly and should not be ranked directly against the annual results.
| Company and scope | Period | Revenue | Year-over-year growth | AI-related or cloud revenue | Profitability evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA, consolidated | FY2026 | $215.938 billion | 65% | Data-center revenue $193.7 billion, up 68% (about 89.7% of consolidated revenue, calculated) | 71.1% GAAP gross margin; $130.387 billion operating income (about 60.4% operating margin, calculated) |
| Microsoft, consolidated | FY2026 | $331.839 billion | 18% | Microsoft Cloud revenue $214.4 billion, up 27% (about 64.6% of consolidated revenue, calculated) | $155.237 billion operating income (about 46.8% operating margin, calculated) |
| AMD, consolidated | FY2025 | $34.6 billion | 34% | Data-center revenue $16.6 billion, up 32% (about 48.0% of consolidated revenue, calculated) | 50% gross margin |
| AMD, consolidated | Q2 FY2026 | $11.536 billion | 50% | Not stated in the cited quarterly figures | 54% GAAP gross margin |
Sources for the published figures are NVIDIA’s 2026 disclosures, Microsoft’s 2026 disclosures, and AMD’s 2026 filing covering fiscal 2025 and its Q2 fiscal 2026 report. The calculated percentages divide the cited segment or operating-income figure by the cited consolidated revenue and are rounded; they are not separately reported company measures.
NVIDIA’s chief executive Jensen Huang described the demand environment this way: “Computing demand is growing exponentially — the agentic AI inflection point has arrived.” Treat that statement as management’s outlook, not as a substitute for orders, revenue, margin, or cash-flow evidence.
How should you normalize revenue growth?
Growth is comparable only when the measurement windows and business definitions match. Use either the same fiscal-year length for every company or a trailing-twelve-month period ending on the same date. Never put a quarterly growth rate beside a full-year growth rate in one ranking without clearly separating them.
Step 1: Choose the period
- Pick a common fiscal year, or calculate trailing-twelve-month revenue for each company.
- Record each company’s fiscal year-end; fiscal calendars can end in different months.
- Use reported revenue from filings rather than mixing quarterly estimates with audited annual totals.
- Keep the comparison date visible so a later update does not silently change the time frame.
Step 2: Calculate the basic growth rate
Year-over-year growth is (current-period revenue ÷ prior-period revenue) − 1. Preserve the absolute revenue beside the percentage. A 65% increase on a very large base and a 65% increase on a small base create different economic outcomes, even though the percentages match.

Step 3: Add AI exposure without confusing it with total growth
Report the AI-related segment’s revenue and growth separately, then show its approximate share of consolidated revenue. In the cited figures, NVIDIA’s data-center business was about 89.7% of total revenue, Microsoft Cloud about 64.6%, and AMD’s data-center business about 48.0%. These shares are calculated proxies, not evidence that the remaining revenue has no AI content.
Step 4: Check the source of growth
- Separate volume, price, product mix, acquisitions, and currency effects when the filing provides them.
- Look for customer or end-market concentration; a single large deployment can make one period unusually strong.
- Compare backlog, remaining performance obligations, or order commentary only when the companies define those measures consistently.
- Distinguish demand recognized as revenue from demand management expects in future periods.
Which profitability measures matter most?
Use a layered view: gross margin shows product economics, operating margin shows the cost of running the business, net margin includes financing and tax effects, and free-cash-flow margin shows how much accounting profit becomes cash after investment. Compare both the level and the trend.
Gross margin
Gross margin is (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue. NVIDIA reported 71.1% GAAP gross margin for fiscal 2026, AMD reported 50% for fiscal 2025, and AMD reported 54% GAAP gross margin in Q2 fiscal 2026. Those AMD figures come from different periods, so the quarterly figure indicates recent conditions but cannot replace the annual comparison.
Operating margin
Operating margin is operating income divided by revenue. Using the cited consolidated figures, NVIDIA’s $130.387 billion operating income divided by $215.938 billion revenue is approximately 60.4%, while Microsoft’s $155.237 billion divided by $331.839 billion is approximately 46.8%. These are calculations from reported amounts; keep them labeled as such and verify rounding against the filing.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallNet margin and free-cash-flow margin
The cited figures do not provide a synchronized net-income or free-cash-flow table for all three companies. Calculate net margin from GAAP net income and free-cash-flow margin from operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, using the same period and statement definitions. Do not fill a missing value with an estimate or combine one company’s quarterly cash flow with another’s annual cash flow.
GAAP versus adjusted results
Build parallel columns rather than choosing whichever basis produces the better ranking. Stock compensation, acquisition accounting, investment cycles, inventory charges, and other adjustments can materially change reported comparisons. AMD disclosed inventory and related charges connected with export controls; keep those charges visible in GAAP results and explain any adjusted presentation separately. NVIDIA and Microsoft disclosures also show why adjustment reconciliations deserve review rather than being treated as automatically recurring or automatically irrelevant.
| Measure | Use it to answer | Required discipline |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP gross margin | How much remains after direct costs? | Use the same reporting period and include unusual inventory or supply charges. |
| GAAP operating margin | How efficiently does the complete business operate? | Include research, sales, administration, and stock compensation as reported. |
| Adjusted operating margin | What does management consider recurring operations? | Show the reconciliation and list every excluded item. |
| Free-cash-flow margin | How much cash remains after capital investment? | Use a consistent definition of capital expenditures and the same period. |
How do you compare valuation without misleading yourself?
Valuation is a separate, date-sensitive judgment. A high-growth company can deserve a higher multiple, but the premium must be tested against the durability of growth, margin quality, cash conversion, and risk. The cited material does not provide a synchronized price-date valuation table, so no current P/E or enterprise-value multiple should be presented as a definitive ranking without refreshing market data immediately before publication.

Use one price timestamp
Record the closing share price or other clearly defined price for every company at the same timestamp and market session. State the exchange, currency, and whether the price is adjusted for a split. A valuation snapshot can become stale quickly when prices or analyst estimates move.
Calculate the core multiples
| Metric | Formula | What it tests | Inputs to disclose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailing P/E | Share price ÷ trailing diluted GAAP EPS | Price paid for the last 12 months of earnings | Price date, diluted shares, trailing period, GAAP EPS |
| Forward P/E | Share price ÷ next-12-month consensus EPS | Price relative to expected earnings | Estimate provider, consensus date, estimate definition, share count |
| EV/sales | Enterprise value ÷ trailing or forward revenue | Value placed on each dollar of sales | Debt, cash, minority interest, preferred equity, revenue period |
| EV/EBIT | Enterprise value ÷ operating income | Value relative to operating profit | GAAP or adjusted EBIT, period, debt and cash date |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ market capitalization | Cash return implied by the current price | FCF definition, period, share price and diluted shares |
Enterprise value generally starts with equity market capitalization, adds debt, preferred equity, and minority interests when applicable, and subtracts cash and cash equivalents. State exactly which line items you include. Keep trailing and forward denominators in separate rows; mixing them creates an apparently cheap or expensive multiple that has no single meaning.
Interpret an expensive multiple
Ask what the price assumes. A premium may imply sustained high revenue growth, stable or expanding margins, large future cash flows, or a lower risk premium. Test those assumptions with a sensitivity table: show the multiple under slower growth, unchanged margins, and higher capital spending. The exercise is more informative than declaring a stock “overvalued” from a single P/E figure.
Interpret a low multiple
A low multiple can reflect temporary earnings pressure, cyclicality, customer concentration, export restrictions, balance-sheet risk, or a market expectation that growth will slow. Check whether the denominator is unusually high because of a one-time benefit, and whether cash flow supports reported earnings.
What does a complete comparison worksheet look like?
Build one row per company and one column per metric. The result should make missing information obvious rather than hiding it behind a score.

A practical interpretation of the cited companies
- NVIDIA: The cited set shows the fastest consolidated growth and the highest reported GAAP gross margin, with data-center revenue making up most of sales. The key test is whether accelerated-computing and AI growth, supply availability, customer spending, and margins remain durable enough to justify the market’s premium.
- Microsoft: Its larger, diversified revenue base and substantial operating income provide a different risk and return profile. Microsoft Cloud grew 27%, but that figure includes broad cloud services, so isolate the incremental AI contribution before attributing all cloud growth to AI.
- AMD: Its smaller revenue base grew 34% in fiscal 2025, data-center revenue grew 32%, and Q2 fiscal 2026 revenue grew 50% year over year. The annual and quarterly figures must remain separate, and the effect of export-control-related inventory charges must be considered when assessing margins.
What business risks can overturn a spreadsheet ranking?
Financial ratios describe the past and the market’s current expectations; operating risks determine whether those figures persist.
Customer concentration and hyperscaler spending
Large cloud customers can accelerate AI infrastructure purchases, but a pause, internal-chip initiative, budget shift, or inventory digestion can affect suppliers quickly. Review concentration disclosures, customer commitments, and management’s explanation of demand timing.
Supply constraints and capital intensity
Advanced chips and data-center systems depend on complex manufacturing, packaging, memory, networking, and power capacity. A company can report strong orders while constrained supply delays revenue or raises costs. Cloud platforms also require substantial data-center and equipment investment, which can depress free cash flow even when operating income is growing.
Export controls and regulatory exposure
Export restrictions can change the products a company may sell, the customers it may serve, and the inventory it can use. AMD’s disclosures identify export-control-related inventory and related charges; treat similar disclosures as a potential margin and demand risk rather than a footnote that can be ignored.
Durability of AI demand
Separate experimentation from production workloads. Look for evidence of paying usage, contract duration, renewal behavior, utilization, and customer return on investment. Management optimism can be useful context, but it should not replace reported revenue, margin, and cash-flow trends.
What are the most common comparison mistakes?
- Ranking mismatched periods: Do not rank AMD’s Q2 fiscal 2026 growth against NVIDIA’s or Microsoft’s full-year growth.
- Mixing GAAP and adjusted margins: Put each basis in its own column and explain every reconciliation.
- Calling cloud revenue AI revenue: Microsoft Cloud is broader than AI; describe it as a cloud-growth proxy.
- Using an undated multiple: A P/E without a price date, share count, and EPS convention cannot be reproduced.
- Ignoring the denominator: A forward multiple depends on whose estimates, which fiscal period, and what consensus date you use.
- Overlooking cash needs: Operating profit can rise while free cash flow falls because of data-center, equipment, or inventory investment.
- Treating one-time charges as either permanent or irrelevant: Show the charge, explain its cause, and test both reported and adjusted cases.
- Assuming segment growth equals shareholder returns: The stock’s return also depends on the valuation investors paid and how expectations change.
When should you refresh an AI-stock comparison?
Refresh the operating data after each company reports a new quarter or annual filing, and refresh valuation immediately before making a decision because prices and consensus estimates move independently of financial statements. Keep an archived version with its price timestamp so you can distinguish a business change from a multiple change.

How can you reach a defensible conclusion?
A defensible conclusion names the comparison basis first, then states what the evidence supports and what it does not. The cited figures support these limited observations: NVIDIA led the cited group in consolidated growth and reported gross margin; Microsoft had the largest consolidated revenue and operating income; AMD showed strong growth from a smaller base and a recent quarterly acceleration. None of those observations establishes the cheapest stock or the best future return because synchronized valuation data, cash-flow margins, and forward assumptions still need to be measured.
Use valuation as an expectation test, not as a replacement for operating analysis. If a premium multiple requires growth or margins that your downside case cannot sustain, the stock fails the test even if its historical results are excellent. If a low multiple reflects a temporary charge or an overreaction to a manageable risk, the opportunity may improve—but only after the filing evidence and cash requirements support that interpretation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare AI stocks by market capitalization alone?
No. Market capitalization measures the equity value investors assign, not the revenue, debt, cash, margins, or AI exposure supporting that value. Pair it with enterprise value and operating metrics so a heavily indebted or cash-rich company is not misread.
What should I do when two companies use different fiscal year-ends?
Use trailing-twelve-month results ending on a common calendar date, or build a bridge from each company’s latest quarters. Label the bridge clearly and avoid implying that fiscal-year numbers cover identical months.
How do stock splits affect P/E and per-share comparisons?
Use split-adjusted prices and split-adjusted diluted EPS from the same data source. A split changes the number of shares and price per share but does not, by itself, change market capitalization or enterprise value.
Is segment revenue more useful than total revenue for AI investing?
It is useful for measuring direct exposure, but segment boundaries differ and may include non-AI products. Use segment growth to identify exposure, then use consolidated cash flow and margins to judge what reaches shareholders.
Why can free cash flow fall while AI revenue rises?
Companies may be building data centers, buying equipment, increasing inventory, or paying suppliers ahead of demand. Revenue growth therefore needs a cash-investment context; inspect operating cash flow and capital expenditures for the same period.
