Compare AI infrastructure stocks with cloud software companies by what they sell and how they earn and spend cash—not by whether they use the word “AI.” Map each company’s revenue sources and customers, then compare demand, margins, infrastructure investment, depreciation, cash generation, and valuation using matching definitions and periods. A diversified company may combine both business models, so segment disclosures matter more than a single category label.
What counts as an AI infrastructure stock or a cloud software company?
These labels describe different parts of the technology value chain, but they are not mutually exclusive classifications. An infrastructure supplier may sell equipment, integrated systems, networking, software, and services. A cloud provider may sell computing capacity alongside software licenses and other services. Some large technology companies participate in both.
NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K describes a data-center platform spanning compute, networking, systems, software, and services, with customers that include cloud providers and AI model makers. Microsoft describes revenue from cloud solutions and software licensing. Those examples show why a company name or an “AI” label is not enough: identify the products, customers, and reporting segments behind the reported revenue.

An equipment sale may depend on a customer’s deployment schedule and capacity needs. A cloud service may be billed as customers consume capacity; software revenue may come from licenses or other arrangements. The filing’s own descriptions and accounting categories should determine how you classify a revenue stream, rather than assumptions about how frequently customers buy or renew.

Classify by revenue stream, not by headline identity
Use the narrowest useful reporting unit. If a company reports a relevant segment, start there; if it combines unlike activities, note that limitation instead of treating the segment as a pure-play business. Keep a simple revenue map with columns for product or service, customer type, reported segment, and the company’s description of how revenue is generated.
This distinction is important when comparing a supplier’s reported sales with a cloud provider’s reported cloud revenue. The figures may cover different products, customer groups, and stages of a customer’s spending. A supplier can sell to a cloud company, which then sells computing services to another customer. Those transactions are connected economically, but they are not the same revenue stream and should not be added together as if they represented one company’s sales.
Which comparison factors matter most?
A useful comparison moves from the source of revenue to the economics required to earn it. Work through demand exposure, margins, infrastructure spending, depreciation, and cash generation before attempting to compare valuation.
| Comparison area | What to examine | What the comparison can help you assess |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue model | Equipment, integrated systems, networking, cloud capacity, software licenses, subscriptions, or usage | What customer spending and deployment or usage behavior drives sales |
| Customers and demand | Disclosed end markets, customer concentration, segment growth, and contracts or remaining performance obligations where reported | Whether reported growth reflects broad demand or exposure to a narrower group of buyers or a particular buildout |
| Margins and mix | Relevant segment gross and operating margins, product mix, hosting, energy and support costs, inventory charges, and transition effects | How the business converts sales into profit and which costs or mix changes affect that conversion |
| Capital intensity | Capital expenditures, leased infrastructure, depreciation, data-center capacity, power, and networking needs | How much investment and ongoing expense may be required to support growth |
| Cash generation | Operating cash flow, capital spending, working capital, and the company’s free-cash-flow definition and reconciliation | How reported earnings relate to cash available after investment |
| Valuation | Same-date market capitalization or enterprise value, a consistently defined earnings or cash-flow measure, fiscal period, and growth assumptions | Whether a relative-price comparison uses a consistent date and denominator |
How should you compare customer demand and growth?
Compare demand measures that describe the same stage of the business, and state what each measure includes. Supplier shipments or segment revenue, cloud consumption, software licensing, and subscription or usage growth are not interchangeable indicators.
Start with the company’s stated reporting scope and period. A segment-growth figure answers a question about that segment’s recognized revenue; a customer-usage measure may describe activity rather than revenue; a contract or remaining-performance-obligation figure may reflect contracted amounts under the company’s own definition. Do not treat one measure as a substitute for another without checking how the company defines it.
Check concentration and the chain of spending
Look for disclosed customer concentration and end-market exposure. A supplier selling into a small number of large buyers can be exposed to those buyers’ purchasing plans even when the supplier’s reported revenue is growing quickly. A cloud provider can have a different mix of customers and services, but its infrastructure demand may still be connected to spending elsewhere in the technology chain.
When two companies appear to serve different categories, ask whether their demand depends on related budgets or buildout decisions. For example, a supplier may sell equipment to a cloud provider, while the cloud provider sells capacity that customers use for AI workloads. That relationship can create portfolio overlap: holdings in both companies may respond to some of the same underlying spending assumptions. This is an analytical consideration, not proof that their results will move together.

Separate current sales from evidence about future demand
Do not combine recognized revenue, customer usage, and contracted amounts into a single “AI demand” score. They answer different questions and may cover different periods. Record the metric name, the company’s definition, the reporting period, and whether it concerns realized sales, usage, or a future contractual obligation. If disclosures do not support a like-for-like comparison, explain the mismatch rather than implying a ranking.
Why are growth rates and margins not enough?
Revenue growth shows the pace of sales, but not the profit earned on each dollar or the investment required to support those sales. Compare growth with relevant segment margins, changes in product mix, and company-disclosed costs or one-time charges.
NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65% year over year. Its gross margin was 71.1% in fiscal 2026, compared with 75.0% in fiscal 2025. NVIDIA attributed the decline in part to a transition toward full-scale data-center solutions and a $4.5 billion charge associated with H20 inventory and purchase obligations. These are company-specific reported results and explanations; they should not be generalized to every infrastructure supplier.
The example illustrates why a high growth rate does not, on its own, establish that profitability improved. A shift in what the company sells can change margins, as can inventory exposure or product-transition costs. When examining another company, check whether its margin measure is gross or operating margin, whether it is company-wide or segment-specific, and whether the reporting period and accounting definition match the figure used for comparison.

Compare like with like
- Use gross margin against gross margin, and operating margin against operating margin.
- Keep segment margins separate from company-wide margins unless the comparison explicitly explains the difference in scope.
- Identify material mix changes, transition effects, and charges described by the company instead of treating a single year’s margin as a stable baseline.
- Record fiscal years and dates. Companies can have different fiscal calendars, so similarly named annual periods may not cover the same months.
Even matching labels do not guarantee that two figures are economically identical. Read the company’s definition and accompanying discussion, particularly when one firm reports a cloud-services margin and another reports a product or company-wide margin.
Do cloud software companies also have infrastructure costs?
Yes. A cloud or software business can require significant investment in data centers, servers, networks, and power. Software revenue does not eliminate the costs of delivering hosted services or expanding capacity.
Microsoft reported a Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage of 66% in fiscal 2026. The company cited AI infrastructure investment and growing AI usage as factors in the decrease, partly offset by efficiency gains. The figure is Microsoft’s reported cloud gross-margin measure for that fiscal year; it should not be treated as a universal margin for cloud software companies or directly equated with a differently defined margin at another company.

Alphabet’s 2025 annual report describes technical infrastructure investment that includes servers, network equipment, and data centers. Alphabet said it expected related depreciation, energy, equipment, and network-capacity costs to rise as AI services require more compute. That is management’s expectation in its annual report, not a realized statistic or a forecast that automatically applies to every cloud provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLook beyond the initial equipment purchase
Capital spending captures investment in assets, while depreciation recognizes the cost of those assets over time under accounting rules. These measures help answer different questions. A large infrastructure buildout can affect cash outflows when equipment and facilities are acquired, while depreciation affects reported expenses over the asset’s accounting life. Energy and network-capacity costs can also matter as services run and demand expands.
When comparing companies, read capital expenditures alongside depreciation and the company’s discussion of leased infrastructure, capacity, and operating costs. Do not assume that one year’s capital-spending figure captures the full economic cost of serving customers, or that depreciation and cash capital expenditures will match in a given period. The disclosures and definitions determine what can be compared.
How do you compare cash generation and capital intensity?
Begin with operating cash flow and capital spending for the same reporting period, then check how each company defines free cash flow. The purpose is to understand how much cash operations produce and how much is reinvested—not to rely on a label that may be calculated differently across companies.
- Choose the same period. Record the fiscal year or quarter for each measure and the dates it covers.
- Read the cash-flow reconciliation. Identify the company’s operating cash flow, capital-spending treatment, and any adjustments included in its stated free-cash-flow measure.
- Account for infrastructure commitments. Review disclosures about leased infrastructure and planned capacity where available, rather than relying only on cash purchases in one period.
- Check working capital. Changes in items such as receivables, inventory, or payables can affect operating cash flow, so note material movements described by the company.
- Interpret cash alongside growth. Consider whether cash generation is being supported by ongoing operations or affected by investment timing and working-capital changes.
A comparison is strongest when it shows the reported inputs and preserves each company’s definition. If one company’s free-cash-flow measure includes adjustments that another company excludes, disclose that rather than presenting the figures as directly equivalent. Capital intensity is not just a question of who spends more in a single year; it is also a question of what that spending supports and what costs recur as capacity is used.
How can you build a fair comparison step by step?
Use a repeatable worksheet so each conclusion can be traced to a filing and a consistent period. The sequence below prevents a category label, a growth headline, or a valuation multiple from doing more work than the underlying disclosures justify.
- Select the companies and the question. Decide whether you are comparing business models, operating performance, cash generation, or valuation. A broad category-level question does not establish which stock is more attractive.
- Map revenue sources and segments. Use each company’s annual report or filing to list products, services, relevant segments, and customer types. Mark diversified activities that prevent a clean pure-play comparison.
- Choose comparable periods. Record each fiscal year’s start and end dates. If the periods do not align, say so and avoid comparing them as though they covered identical market conditions.
- Capture demand evidence. Record segment revenue and growth alongside any disclosed usage, contracts, remaining performance obligations, end markets, or customer concentration. Keep unlike indicators in separate rows.
- Compare margins with their definitions. Note the margin type, reporting unit, period, and relevant mix changes or charges. Do not compare a cloud segment’s gross margin with a supplier’s operating margin as if they were the same measure.
- Assess investment and ongoing costs. Record capital spending, depreciation, infrastructure commitments where disclosed, and company commentary on energy, networking, or capacity needs.
- Reconcile cash measures. Compare operating cash flow and capital spending for the selected period; document each company’s free-cash-flow definition before using that term in a relative comparison.
- Add valuation last. Use synchronized market prices and a common valuation date, then calculate the same valuation measure from consistently defined financial periods or estimates. State the denominator and assumptions.
The resulting comparison should make uncertainty visible. If a company combines infrastructure and software revenue in a broad segment, do not invent a split. If no consistent customer metric is disclosed, compare only the available evidence and explain the limit. A transparent partial comparison is more useful than a precise-looking score built from mismatched measures.

What can filings tell you about risk and portfolio overlap?
Company disclosures can reveal business-specific exposures, but they do not establish a universal risk profile for every stock in a category. Use the filing’s own descriptions to identify what could interrupt revenue growth, squeeze margins, or raise the cost of supporting demand.
For an infrastructure supplier, relevant company-disclosed factors may include customer concentration, product transitions, inventory exposure, and supply or capacity conditions. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 margin discussion and H20-related charge provide an example of how transition and inventory issues can affect a particular company’s results. They do not show that all AI infrastructure providers will face the same charge or margin path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For cloud and software businesses, consider how investment in infrastructure interacts with reported margins and cash generation. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 cloud margin discussion connects AI infrastructure investment and growing AI usage with margin pressure, partly offset by efficiency gains. Alphabet’s expectation of rising infrastructure-related costs illustrates a management view about future compute requirements, not a guarantee of what will happen or when.
For a portfolio, distinguish category diversification from economic diversification. Two companies can sell different products yet depend on related customer budgets, shared suppliers, or the same expansion cycle. Review those connections in company disclosures and your own assumptions; the available examples do not quantify how strongly any two holdings are correlated.
Can you tell which category is cheaper or likely to outperform?
Not from business-model descriptions or operating figures alone. A relative valuation or performance conclusion needs a defined company set, synchronized prices, a common valuation date, and consistently defined financial measures and estimates.
Market capitalization and enterprise value are different measures, as are earnings and cash-flow denominators. Even when two companies report the same type of metric, fiscal periods, segment boundaries, and accounting treatment can differ. Any valuation comparison should specify the multiple, the market date, the period or estimate used in the denominator, and the assumptions behind growth expectations.
The company figures discussed above describe reported business results and management commentary; they do not establish which stock is cheaper at current prices or which category will outperform. Without a selected peer group and common valuation inputs, a category-wide “cheap” or “expensive” verdict would overstate what those facts support.

What should your final comparison conclude?
A useful conclusion should identify the business model differences that matter to the chosen companies, explain what demand evidence supports the comparison, and show how margins and investment affect cash generation. It should also separate company-reported results from management expectations and make period or definition mismatches explicit.
Keep the verdict bounded to the evidence. You can state that a supplier’s revenue grew rapidly in a particular fiscal year or that a cloud segment reported a particular gross margin, provided the company and period travel with the figure. You cannot infer a category-wide margin trajectory, a current valuation ranking, or future outperformance from those observations alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare AI infrastructure stocks with the whole cloud software sector or with individual companies?
Start with individual companies or clearly defined peer groups whose disclosures let you compare the same business question. A sector label can hide major differences in product mix, customer exposure, and reporting scope, so state how you selected peers before drawing conclusions.
How should I handle companies whose fiscal years do not end at the same time?
Write down the exact period covered by each annual result and identify any mismatch in the comparison. For closer timing, use comparable interim periods only when both companies report them and their definitions remain clear.
What does remaining performance obligation tell me about a cloud company?
It is a company-reported measure tied to its contracts and accounting definitions, not a direct substitute for recognized revenue or customer usage. Check the filing for what is included and when the company expects amounts to be recognized.
Can high AI-related revenue growth prove that a stock is a good investment?
No. Revenue growth is an operating result, while an investment conclusion also depends on profitability, cash needs, risks, the price paid, and future expectations. Those inputs need to be assessed for a specific company and valuation date.
