There is no single honest leaderboard of AI companies. A cloud platform, an advertising network, a chip designer, and a private model laboratory earn money from different parts of the AI stack and report different fiscal periods. The reliable approach is to normalize each period and currency, keep business archetypes in separate peer groups, and read a margin stack that includes gross margin, operating margin, segment profit, capital expenditure, depreciation, and cash generation. On that basis, Microsoft and NVIDIA show very different kinds of scale, AWS is more profitable than Amazon’s consolidated margin suggests, and Alphabet and Meta are funding AI infrastructure inside much larger advertising businesses. The guide below gives a repeatable way to make those comparisons without labeling all company revenue as AI revenue.
What is the right way to compare AI companies?
Start with a normalized comparison sheet, not a ranking of headline sales. For every company, record the fiscal year-end, reporting currency, accounting basis (GAAP or non-GAAP), consolidation level, and the business unit that actually captures AI economics. Then compare companies within similar archetypes and connect infrastructure spending to the revenue, profit, and cash it is meant to produce.
1. Normalize the reporting period and currency
Microsoft reports a fiscal year ending June 30, while Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon use calendar-year reporting and NVIDIA uses a different fiscal calendar. A 2025 figure therefore does not mean the same 12 months for every company. Put the period beside every number, convert currencies at a stated rate if necessary, and do not rank raw totals until the periods are aligned.
Keep the original currency in your working file even when you publish a converted view. A currency conversion can change apparent growth or margins when exchange rates move, and it should never conceal whether a figure is consolidated or segment-level.

2. Separate business archetypes
Use separate peer groups because the same AI demand flows through different economic models:
- Cloud and software platforms: sell compute, storage, hosted models, applications, and subscriptions. Their relevant measures include cloud segment revenue, gross margin, operating income, utilization, and data-center depreciation.
- Advertising platforms: use AI to improve targeting, recommendations, ranking, and creative tools. AI may raise ad revenue without appearing as a separately reported product line, so company-wide revenue is not AI revenue.
- Semiconductor suppliers: sell accelerators, networking, and systems to the companies building data centers. Product gross margin can be high even when the supplier does not own the downstream compute capacity.
- Private model companies: may sell API calls, subscriptions, and enterprise contracts while relying on external cloud capacity and funding. Public disclosure is usually less standardized than for listed companies.
3. Build a margin stack
Read margins from the most direct cost measure to the broadest one. Gross margin shows what remains after cost of revenue; operating margin includes research, sales, administration, and other operating costs; a segment operating margin can isolate a cloud unit inside a diversified company. These measures are not interchangeable.
- Calculate gross margin when revenue and cost of revenue are disclosed.
- Use consolidated operating margin to understand the whole company.
- Add AI-relevant segment operating income and revenue where the company reports them.
- Label non-GAAP figures separately from GAAP figures and do not mix them in one ranking.
4. Build an infrastructure-cost bridge
AI infrastructure is not one expense line. Track capital expenditure, depreciation, energy, servers, networking, data-center operations, and technology-infrastructure expense separately. Capex is a cash investment that becomes an asset; depreciation is the later accounting expense. A large capex year can therefore precede the full effect on operating profit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a filing does not identify AI-only assets, say so. Property and equipment spending may support search, social media, commerce, conventional cloud workloads, and AI at the same time. Do not present total capex as AI capex without an explicit company breakdown.
5. Connect spending to monetization
Compare infrastructure growth with revenue growth, segment profit, operating cash flow, and free cash flow. A business can report rising revenue while consuming more cash for capacity, or it can have strong current margins while depreciation from new facilities has not yet reached the income statement. The question is whether incremental infrastructure is producing durable demand and acceptable returns, not whether capex is large or small in isolation.
Which 2025 figures are actually comparable?
The table below keeps the reported periods and business levels visible. Calculated percentages are arithmetic from the stated figures and are rounded; they are not additional company-reported metrics.
| Company and period | Reported revenue | Gross measure | Operating measure | Infrastructure indicator | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft, fiscal year ended June 30, 2025 | $281.724 billion | $193.893 billion gross profit (about 68.8% of revenue); Microsoft Cloud gross margin 69% | $128.528 billion operating income (about 45.6% of revenue) | AI infrastructure affected Microsoft Cloud gross margin | Diversified software, cloud, and devices company; the cloud margin is a segment measure, not the whole-company margin |
| NVIDIA, fiscal 2025 non-calendar period | $130.5 billion | 75.0% gross margin | $81.5 billion operating income (about 62.5% of revenue) | Hardware and systems supplied to data-center builders; company-wide capex is not an equivalent measure of customer infrastructure | Semiconductor and accelerated-computing supplier; product economics differ from owning cloud capacity |
| Meta Platforms, 2025 annual period | $200.966 billion | Not stated in the supplied figures | $83.276 billion operating income (about 41.4% of revenue) | $72.22 billion capital expenditures (about 35.9% of revenue) | Advertising-led platform funding data centers and technical infrastructure for AI and other workloads |
| Alphabet, 2025 annual period | $402.836 billion | Not stated in the supplied figures | $129.039 billion operating income; 32% operating margin | $91.4 billion capital expenditures (about 22.7% of revenue) | Advertising, cloud, and other businesses; capex supports broad technical infrastructure, not an AI-only pool |
| Amazon, 2025 annual period | AWS sales: $128.7 billion | Not stated for AWS in the supplied figures | AWS operating income: $45.6 billion (about 35.4% of AWS sales); total Amazon operating margin: 11.2% | Company-wide capex allocation to AWS was not stated | AWS is a segment inside a retail, advertising, and cloud group, so total-company margin dilutes the cloud comparison |
These numbers illustrate why a single ranking fails. NVIDIA’s 75.0% product gross margin is compared with Microsoft’s 69% Microsoft Cloud gross margin only as an illustration of different layers; neither is a substitute for the other company’s operating margin. Amazon’s AWS result is a segment profit, while its 11.2% operating margin covers the entire company. Alphabet’s and Meta’s capex figures are company-wide investments that support more than AI.

Which company makes the most money from AI?
No public filing in this set reports a fully comparable, audited AI-revenue line for every company, so the answer depends on what you mean by makes the most money. NVIDIA reports the clearest direct exposure to AI infrastructure demand through accelerated-computing products, Microsoft and AWS monetize AI workloads inside cloud businesses, and Alphabet and Meta monetize AI-enhanced advertising and products. Their total revenue figures cannot be called AI revenue.
If you mean total company revenue
Alphabet’s reported 2025 revenue of $402.836 billion is the largest total in this group, followed by Microsoft at $281.724 billion, Meta at $200.966 billion, NVIDIA at $130.5 billion, and AWS at $128.7 billion as a segment. That ordering describes corporate scale, not AI-specific sales, and it mixes a consolidated company with a segment and different fiscal periods.
If you mean operating profit
Microsoft reported $128.528 billion of operating income, Alphabet $129.039 billion, Meta $83.276 billion, and NVIDIA $81.5 billion for their respective 2025 periods. AWS reported $45.6 billion of segment operating income. The near tie between Alphabet and Microsoft should not be interpreted as equal AI profitability: each includes large non-AI businesses and uses a different fiscal calendar.
If you mean direct AI infrastructure leverage
NVIDIA’s revenue and gross margin reflect selling chips and systems to many data-center operators. A cloud provider pays for those components, owns facilities, and later records depreciation, energy, and operating costs. The supplier can therefore show high product margins while the buyer carries the capital intensity. Compare the two as different positions in the value chain, not as identical businesses.

Use gross margin to study unit economics before overhead and operating margin to study the complete business after research, sales, and administration. Always attach the scope to the label: company, segment, product, GAAP, or adjusted.
Gross margin answers a narrow cost question
Gross margin is calculated as (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue. It captures direct delivery costs such as hardware, hosting, support, energy, and infrastructure depreciation when those items are classified in cost of revenue. NVIDIA’s 75.0% gross margin is a product-level indicator for a chip supplier. Microsoft’s reported $193.893 billion gross profit on $281.724 billion revenue implies about 68.8% company gross margin, while its Microsoft Cloud gross margin was 69%.
Microsoft said its Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage decreased to 69% because of scaling AI infrastructure, partly offset by efficiency gains in Azure. That statement is useful evidence that demand can grow while the cost of serving AI temporarily pressures gross margin.

Operating margin answers the whole-company question
Operating margin is operating income ÷ revenue. It includes research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative costs in addition to direct delivery costs. NVIDIA’s approximately 62.5% calculated operating margin and Microsoft’s approximately 45.6% calculated operating margin are not evidence that one cloud model is more efficient; NVIDIA’s business model and reported cost structure are different.

Segment margins answer the monetization question
A segment margin can reveal whether a cloud or infrastructure unit is profitable inside a diversified parent. AWS’s $45.6 billion operating income on $128.7 billion sales implies about 35.4% segment operating margin, while Amazon’s total-company operating margin was 11.2%. Use the segment figure to study AWS economics and the consolidated figure to study the company shareholders own. Do not substitute one for the other.
How much does AI infrastructure cost?
There is no universal per-company AI infrastructure price. The cost depends on accelerator purchases, servers, networking, buildings, electricity, cooling, staffing, leases, and the utilization of that capacity. Public filings usually expose pieces of the total rather than a complete AI-only bill.
Capital expenditure
Capex is the most visible forward-looking indicator because it shows cash committed to property and equipment. Alphabet reported $91.4 billion of 2025 capex, and Meta reported $72.22 billion. Relative to their reported revenue, those figures are approximately 22.7% and 35.9%, respectively. The ratios are useful intensity indicators, not proof that the entire amount funded AI.
Ask what the company includes in capex: land and buildings, servers, network equipment, leases, or only purchases. If the filing does not isolate AI assets, retain the broader label and explain the limitation.

Depreciation and operating infrastructure
New servers and data centers become depreciable assets. Depreciation can rise for years after a capex surge, even if the cash payment happened earlier. Energy, equipment, and network capacity are recurring operating costs, and higher utilization can improve economics while idle capacity weakens them. Track depreciation and technology-infrastructure expense alongside capex rather than treating capex as the entire cost.
Alphabet warned that depreciation, energy, equipment, and network-capacity costs would increase significantly as developing and serving AI offerings requires more compute power than historical consumer and enterprise offerings. That warning is a cost trajectory, not a promise of a specific future margin.

Capacity commitments and leases
Some AI companies reserve cloud capacity or sign long-term infrastructure agreements instead of buying all equipment themselves. These commitments can create future fixed costs and dependence on a supplier even when they do not appear in current capex. Read lease obligations, purchase commitments, and disclosed cloud contracts in the notes to the accounts.
How do I connect infrastructure spending to returns?
Use a bridge that starts with cash investment and ends with incremental monetization. A practical worksheet has these columns:
- Beginning capacity: prior-year property and equipment, data-center footprint, or disclosed accelerator capacity.
- New investment: capex, equipment purchases, leases, and capacity commitments, with the company’s definition.
- Operating burden: depreciation, energy, networking, maintenance, and technical-infrastructure expense.
- Monetization: AI-specific revenue if disclosed; otherwise cloud sales, segment sales, ad revenue, paid seats, API usage, or another clearly defined proxy.
- Cash outcome: operating cash flow minus capex, plus financing needs and any material changes in working capital.
Then calculate growth and intensity measures such as capex ÷ revenue, segment operating income ÷ segment revenue, and operating cash flow − capex. Compare the direction over several periods rather than treating one year as a return-on-investment study. A capex surge can be rational if demand and utilization catch up; it can destroy returns if capacity remains idle or pricing falls.
Worked interpretation of the 2025 examples
Meta’s $72.22 billion capex against $200.966 billion revenue signals greater capital intensity than Alphabet’s $91.4 billion against $402.836 billion revenue on a simple ratio. That does not establish that Meta’s AI projects are better or worse; Meta’s advertising, reality-labs, and general data-center needs are included. The ratio tells you where to investigate utilization, depreciation, and cash generation.
AWS’s $45.6 billion operating income on $128.7 billion sales shows substantial segment profit before considering how Amazon allocates corporate costs. Compare AWS with other cloud segments on the same basis, then compare Amazon’s 11.2% consolidated margin with other diversified retailers and advertisers. Mixing those levels would produce a misleading conclusion.

- Audited or filed: backed by a public financial statement with a defined period.
- Company-reported but unaudited: a management statement whose accounting scope is unclear.
- Reported by a counterparty or media source: useful context that may omit terms or offsetting costs.
- Analyst estimate: a model assumption, not a reported result.
Never infer profitability from a cloud contract. A contract can represent committed capacity, minimum spend, credits, revenue sharing, or a strategic investment; it does not reveal the lab’s gross margin or cash burn without the terms.
Compare funding dependence explicitly
For a private lab, add cash raised, debt, strategic investments, cloud-provider concentration, and contractual minimums to the worksheet. A model company that owns little infrastructure may show lower capex but higher supplier dependence and variable hosting costs. That is a different risk profile from a platform that finances its own data centers.
What mistakes make AI-company comparisons unreliable?
- Calling total revenue AI revenue: Do this only when a company reports an AI-specific line with a defined scope.
- Mixing fiscal years: Microsoft’s June 30 year is not directly aligned with calendar-year results from Alphabet, Meta, or Amazon, and NVIDIA uses another fiscal calendar.
- Comparing product gross margin with operating margin: NVIDIA’s product gross margin and a cloud segment’s operating margin answer different questions.
- Treating all capex as AI capex: Data centers and equipment also support search, social, commerce, and conventional cloud workloads.
- Ignoring depreciation timing: Cash capex arrives before the full income-statement burden.
- Mixing GAAP and adjusted figures: Stock compensation, amortization, restructuring, and other exclusions can materially change margins.
- Ranking a segment against a company: AWS sales and profit should be compared with cloud segments, not with Amazon’s consolidated revenue alone.
- Inferring private-lab profit from capacity deals: Commitments are not audited earnings.
- Using one-year snapshots: AI investment cycles and utilization changes require a multi-period trend.
What should a practical comparison template contain?
A spreadsheet or financial-data platform can reproduce the workflow if every cell carries its scope and date. Use one row per company-period and these columns:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Column | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Period | Fiscal year-end, duration, and reporting currency | Prevents false rankings caused by mismatched calendars |
| Business archetype | Cloud/software, advertising, semiconductor, or private model company | Defines the appropriate peer group |
| Revenue scope | Consolidated, segment, product, or AI-specific line | Stops a segment from being compared with a parent company |
| Gross margin | GAAP or non-GAAP, with cost-of-revenue definition | Shows direct delivery economics |
| Operating margin | Consolidated and relevant segment measures | Shows profitability after operating expenses |
| Capex | Total or AI-specific, with inclusion notes | Measures cash investment and capital intensity |
| Depreciation and infrastructure expense | Reported amount and classification | Captures the recurring cost of installed capacity |
| Cash generation | Operating cash flow, capex, and free cash flow definition | Tests whether growth is self-funded |
| Disclosure quality | Filed, company-reported, counterparty-reported, or estimated | Keeps uncertainty visible |
| Partner dependence | Key cloud, chip, or funding relationships | Highlights concentration and contractual risk |
Keep an assumptions tab for currency rates, rounding, segment reclassifications, and any allocation method. If a value is not stated, write “not stated” and preserve the source period instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
What is the bottom-line interpretation?
The most defensible comparison is layered: use revenue for scale, gross margin for direct economics, operating margin for the full business, segment profit for the AI-relevant unit, capex and depreciation for infrastructure intensity, and cash flow for funding capacity. In the 2025 examples, Microsoft and Alphabet show very large consolidated profits, NVIDIA shows supplier economics with a 75.0% gross margin, AWS shows a profitable cloud segment hidden inside a lower-margin parent, and Meta and Alphabet show how heavily established advertising platforms are investing in technical infrastructure. None of those observations alone identifies the most profitable AI company. The answer depends on the layer of the stack, the fiscal period, and the quality of the disclosure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare quarterly or annual AI-company results?
Use annual results for the main peer table because they reduce seasonality and one-time capacity timing. Add quarterly data only as a trend view, and align each company’s quarter-end dates before calculating growth or margins.
How should stock-based compensation affect an AI margin comparison?
Keep the GAAP result as the primary measure because stock compensation is a real cost to shareholders. You may show an adjusted margin separately, but identify every exclusion and never combine adjusted figures from one company with GAAP figures from another.
What does negative free cash flow mean for an AI infrastructure builder?
It can reflect deliberate expansion rather than an unprofitable product, especially when facilities and accelerators are purchased ahead of demand. Examine utilization, contracted revenue, liquidity, debt, and the expected depreciation burden before judging whether the spending is sustainable.
How can I tell whether a cloud segment is subsidizing AI usage?
Look for disclosures about free credits, internal usage, discounted commitments, and changes in segment gross margin. A rising user count or revenue figure does not prove that the workload covers its fully allocated compute, networking, and support costs.
